My Saudi Adventure by Emily
S
o why Saudi Arabia? That was the question on everyone’s lips when I told them I was going to throw in my “normal” life in Australia for a year in a far off country shrouded in exotic mystery and allure.
I had come to a time in my life where I needed to break free of the humdrum routine of the everyday and satisfy my craving for adventure and excitement. Flipping through a nursing careers magazine I came across the CCM Recruitment advertisement for contracts in Saudi Arabia. I called CCM and the recruitment officer gave me a complete and thorough overview of what to expect from my Middle Eastern sojourn, including details about the work involved, lifestyle, and cultural changes.
CCM’s continuous assistance with the application, medical, and visa processing enabled the process to be quick and hassle-free. So within three months I was waving goodbye to Oz and embarking on my Big Adventure. Almost three years later (and with no
plans to leave!) I can confidently affirm that my time here in the Middle East has been the most rewarding of my life. Not only are the financial benefits excellent, but career wise I have had opportunities to further my skills extensively by being involved in the health care of patients with rare and advanced diseases and morbidities rarely seen in Western society.
Being a member of a large ex-pat community here in Riyadh has permitted me to meet and mingle with people from all over the world and all walks of life. It isn’t unusual to be at one of the multitude of parties, balls, and functions that are held every weekend and be introduced to twenty different people, all different nationalities, from engineers to doctors, corporate managers to military personnel. Being literally in the ‘middle’, travel to Europe, Asia, and everywhere else from Saudi is easy and accessible. The social scene here is thriving, and I have been fortunate enough to make amazing lasting friends, whom I have travelled with and can share my experience with me. I came to Saudi Arabia knowing no-one and perhaps a little nervous of what lay beyond the horizon, but when I leave will take with me an irreplaceable experience, lasting friendships and a broader and wiser outlook on life and culture. 9

See the world from the Arabian Gulf An occasional contribution from Chris Kohleis, Recruitment Director of Promesse Hi everyone I’ve often said that working in the Arabian Gulf offers great opportunities to travel but some nurses have asked me why it’s so great. After all, wouldn’t the same apply if you worked in London for example? Both places are a lot closer to attractive holiday destinations in Europe than Australia or New Zealand. There’s a combination of reasons that so many nurses are able to have such great holidays while working in the Arabian Gulf states. The first is that when working in the Gulf you can retain around 80% of your salary after you’ve paid all your day-to-day expenses – there’s no tax and the hospitals provide for free most of your high expense items. You just can’t do that working either at home or in the UK or US. The money you retain is yours to dispose of as you please, to use for travelling, for some special purchases, for saving or any combination. In other words you can splurge out on a fabulous holiday and still have money left over. It’s great to have the funds to spare, but if you can’t get the time off, you still can’t go on that fabulous trip. In the Gulf, you’ll generally have around a hefty 7 weeks of annual leave per year. Also bear in mind that when you’re working, the shifts for most nurses are 12 hours which means you end up working about 7-8 days every fortnight. This means that you can take short breaks of 3-4 days without touching your annual holidays. You have to be sensible though – getting the days off you want obviously depends on your roster so you need to plan in advance. All the same, many of our nurses use this time to take regular short break holidays. I even went to the South of France for a long weekend. Flight times from Gulf locations to the Eastern Mediterranean are about 3-4 hours , Rome 4-5 hours, Paris & London about 7 hours, Nairobi 5 hours and Mumbai 3 hours. And short trips to holiday resorts such as to Jeddah for diving on the Red Sea are often only an hour away . The Gulf is a very competitive travel hub for connecting Europe, Africa and Asia and offers low cost fares and holiday packages in local currencies which are unaffected by exchange rate fluctuations – you are paid in the local currency and buy your travel in this currency. Finally the other interesting thing about working in the Gulf is that you will be working with a highly international workforce with colleagues from across the globe. Many of our nurses have developed life-long friendships with these nurses and joined them on their visits home – there’s nothing like a local to show you around. The breadth of your travel options is huge and where you go is only limited by your imagination. Most people have opportunities to travel like this only very few times in their life so it’s important to make the most of it. Regards and happy travelling

Providing solutions for Medical Evidence in the Life Insurance Industry Many people are familiar with Life Insurance, whether you have it yourself or you know other people who are currently or have been through the process of applying for or increasing their cover. However, not everyone is aware that most companies require medical investigations or reports as part of the application process, not just for claims. Depending on the type of cover, the company and the amount of insurance someone is applying for; the Insurer may request any or all of the following to assess an Applicant’s risk: • Paramedical Exams • Blood Tests • GP exams • Specialist Exams and Exercise Stress Tests • Chest X-rays and other imaging tests • Medical History Based Reports Results of these tests are compiled and returned to the Life Office for underwriting, where the Insurance
Company assesses the potential risk of covering clients. Understandably, this can be an arduous task for all parties. UHG provides innovative solutions to obtaining medical evidence in the most efficient way and improves the experience for both the applicants and the Insurers. To make it easier for the applicant, UHG have health professionals that go to visit applicants in their homes or workplaces to conduct medical investigations. UHG has consultants all over Australia that perform these medical services. In addition to providing a convenient service, UHG also provides a faster turnaround time for completing policies, quality review of all work that comes in and sophisticated technology that helps the Insurance Company and the Advisers monitor the progress of their case. STRESS and ANXIETY
The following extract was taken from the Ausmed Publication entitled “Counselling and Interviewing for Carers” written by Hugh Irons, Chapter 8, entitled ‘Stress and Anxiety’. Visit www.AusmedOnline.com for further readings and resources.
S
tress, anxiety, and agitation are closely related, but they are not the same thing. Stress is often discussed as if it were a disease to be avoided at all costs. However, some degree of ‘stress’ is inevitable in life. Anything that causes a change in a person’s daily routine (or 26
threatens to do so) can be described as ‘stressful’, and it could even be said that some degree of stress is ‘healthy’. However, reaction to stress varies significantly from one person to another, and what one person finds extremely stressful might be no problem at all to another person. If a person does feel particularly stressed, this can lead to anxiety and agitation.
Leisure and Lifestyle
Stress
Various things that cause stress are known as ‘stressors’. Stressors can include: Environmental factors, Lifestyle factors and Physical factors. If the reaction is short term, this is called an ‘acute stress reaction’. Such a reaction begins within hours and lasts for days (or perhaps weeks) after a traumatic event such as a car crash. Symptoms can include anxiety, temporary loss of memory surrounding the event, unwillingness to spend time with other people, and agitation. If the reaction lasts months (or perhaps years), ‘posttraumatic stress disorder’ (PTSD) might have developed. The stressor is usually a significant traumatic event such as military combat, severe physical assault, sexual assault, or witnessing a natural disaster. In addition to anxiety and agitation, the person can suffer from sleep disturbances, nightmares, and ‘flashbacks’ (vivid memories of the traumatic event). People suffering from PTSD often avoid people or situations that bring back memories of the event. PTSD can be an extremely disabling disorder that can ruin a person’s life. Professional psychological or psychiatric treatment is usually required.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a general feeling of uneasiness and concern as a result of a threat - real or imagined. Mild-to-moderate anxiety can be a normal response to a stressor, and the reaction can help a person deal with difficult situations. For example, a student preparing for an examination might be motivated to study and concentrate. However, severe anxiety can interfere with a person’s ability to cope with stressors. The person can develop intense feelings of discomfort, including physical symptoms (such as headache). These feelings can significantly restrict daily life. This is especially the case with severe, long-term (chronic) anxiety, which remains with a person for a long time. Such anxiety can have a profound and damaging effect on health, employment, and social functioning. Physical symptoms such as feeling tense, rapid heart beat, and general aches and pains can occur. Concentration deteriorates and the person can have difficulty in absorbing new information. A severely anxious person is focused completely on the threat or crisis at hand and can seem quite confused and disoriented.

A short drive from Riyadh, Old Dariyah is the ancestral home of the ruling family of Saudi Arabia. Although most of its mud buildings date to this century, Old Dariyah itself was inhabited as early as the 9th century CE. The old city also served as the capital of the first Saudi dynasty from 1744 to 1818. Significant old city structures include the Salwa Palace, Saad bin Saud Palace (above), the Turaif Bath House, and the Imam Mohammad bin Saud Mosque. It’s one more example of the many surprises Arabia has in store for the interested visitor. Today Saudi and the modern nations
of the region are building excellent modern healthcare systems, and they need the help of skilled, dedicated Western nurses to do it. At the right hospitals there are great opportunities for career advancement and continuing your education. You do need expert advice to make the most of the opportunities on offer - see the examples across the page. Because Promesse specialises exclusively in placements to the Arabian Gulf, we know what we’re talking about - and we’re free and friendly, so if you want the experience of
