Welcome to Issue 12 of the Nursing Post! We don’t have a usual winner for the cover competition this issue. The photo wasn’t submitted by a reader, but was originally used for an advert I was composing. While rummaging through some old artwork, I came across the photo and thought how good it would look on the cover! The people in the photo are from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
We are running the Queensland Government feature once again. So if you missed it the last issue, just check the middle pages for a special 4 page career feature which you can pull-out to keep as a handy directory. Watch this section in upcoming issues as we bring you more discounts and special offers! We are going to announce a new competition for signing up to receive our online edition. Details will be given in our next issue. Lets just say a $500 dollar gift is involved....so find out next issue when we reveal what it is. What’s nursing accommodation like in the Arabian Gulf? An occasional contribution from Chris Kohleis, Recruitment Director of Promesse Hi everyone, So many people ask me what the accommodation is like when you take a contract in the Gulf, I thought I would give some background about this issue. Clearly, it’s important - if you’re unhappy about where you’re living then it can colour your whole experience in a negative way. As you’d expect the quality of the accommodation varies tremendously depending on what hospital you work for. The style of living also varies depending whether you work in Saudi Arabia or one of the other Gulf States, such as the UAE or Qatar. In Saudi Arabia, you would live in a ‘compound’ - an enclosed area with controlled access which can form the basis for a friendly and cohesive expat community. In the UAE and Qatar, you don’t usually live in compounds. Some hospitals may still have their own accommodation, usually a leased apartment block while others provide you with an accommodation allowance and help you find a place of your own. Thus it is more like living in any other city, which means that you have to be a bit more self-reliant and motivated to establish your social network. Where the hospital provides a housing allowance the crucial issue is that this allowance is sufficient to secure you a comfortable abode. In Saudi, compounds can vary enormously in size from vast complexes the size of a whole suburb to smaller areas just encompassing a single apartment block. When I worked in Riyadh some years ago now, I lived in a small studio apartment adjacent to the hospital in Riyadh. Nowadays the quality of the accommodation has improved dramatically if you go to the right places. For example, the King Abdulaziz Medical City (“KAMC”) in Riyadh now houses its Western personnel in a 5-star luxurious compound, called Al Yamamah. Nurses at KAMC usually share a modern, spacious 2, 3 or 4 BR villa. The villas have high quality kitchens and lounges, all fully furnished and utilities including cable TV are provided free. Other free facilities include 3 outdoor swimming pools, one indoor pool, gym, sauna, spa, squash and volley ball courts. The compound also has restaurants, a hairdresser, gift shop and supermarket. It’s like living in a classy resort! This KAMC accommodation and associated facilities are undoubtedly the best on offer for Aust/NZ nurses in Saudi Arabia and our candidates really enjoy living there. After all, a safe, pleasant

experts on the gulf
A typical bedroom in an Al Yamamah villa in Riyadh
and very comfortable home environment can make your working life so much more enjoyable as well. The important things to ask about when considering your Saudi accommodation are the following • Quality of the housing itself • Level of services such as telecommunications • Arrangements for sharing the house • What other facilities are on offer? • Is there a curfew, i.e. can I come and go whatever the time? • Can I bring in visitors? (Some hospital compounds do not allow male visitors) Of course, I or my team can advise you about the quality of the accommodation at each of our hospitals- we’ve inspected them personally and in a number of cases stayed there ourselves. So if you’re at all concerned about this, please contact us. I think the important thing to remember is that nowadays you’d don’t have to live in poky housing with few amenities. Regards
Chris

Diabetes: Rapidly Becoming the World’s Most Prevalent Chronic Illness
E
very day 2751 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes. This number continues to grow as factors such as poor diet and physical inactivity plague modern day society. Many of us may already be aware of this alarming statistic as we regularly encounter patients with this illness in our clinical practice. What role do we as allied health professionals play in helping reduce the incidence of diabetes in our communities? Nurses and indeed all health professionals are powerful advocates for good health, nutrition and positive work life balance in our society. We play an integral role in educating patients about their ailments and more importantly the prevention of any reoccurrence. Is providing education the only answer? Or should we encourage national debate on health issues like this and many others, to help encourage change? Smoking, a more visible example of bad health practice
which results in disease, is regularly targeted by national anti-smoking adverts and campaigns. It is well known that this type of public awareness has a positive impact on take up rates of young (new) smokers, and encourages current smokers to quit. But what can be done to help facilitate a similar level of public attention on another one of Australia’s growing chronic illnesses? It is crucial that we continue to educate ourselves, so that we can arm the public with the best and most current knowledge available. There are many complications associated with diabetes such as cardiovascular and neurological changes. There are always new medications being developed which can help patients manage and control the various symptoms associated with this condition. Diabetes currently affects 246 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 380 million by 2025 2.

Beat the markets and learn from the best
T
Why should I consider becoming educated with The Sharemarket College? For the past 13 years, The
Sharemarket College has been at the forefront of financial market education. As a Registered Training Organisation, we have taken the steps to have our education curriculum accredited and registered
with the Department of Education, Training and the Arts. The Company also holds their own Australian Financial Services Licence No:331635. We have done this to ensure that you know we have passed stringent quality control tests and maintain an ongoing commitment to improvement of our systems and processes. Your money is important to you, so you should choose an organisation which has a history of quality and longevity.
Why can’t I learn by reading good trading books? Many traders start out by reading
books in an effort to trade and invest in the market. However, most books are designed to give you only enough information to get your attention, not necessarily to get the know-how. Our uniquely designed training courses give you the necessary education you need to perform like a professional. You will interact with professional traders who will work with you to comprehend and apply the information taught. Our Research Team will provide you with daily reports on the market and the stocks which are providing good opportunities, along with our method of selecting, managing and exiting a position. Sharemarket College will also provide you with extensive ongoing support throughout the program to assist in developing a trading methodology that suits your style to ensure you are consistently profitable – you cannot gain this support through books.
Do I need to know a lot about the market? Not at all. The Sharemarket College will
take you from the basics right through to advanced techniques, and all at your own pace. Some of our most successful members are those who started with no knowledge at all (people who have come from different backgrounds such as nurses, farmers, plumbers etc). The training program is designed to start as if you know nothing about the markets. However to be successful you must have a structured plan in place and that’s where we come in – we help you to structure your own personal plan to suit you. Many traders and investors don’t know where to start or how to apply the knowledge they may already have - and mistakes can be costly. Is Trading Risky? Like everything in life there is a degree of risk. Without the right education, discipline and mechanical approach to investing, most people fail, The Sharemarket College educates you in how to minimise risk. They teach you when to enter a position, when to take your profits, and more importantly, how to control the amount of risk you are prepared to take. Those with the right approach and education have a much greater chance of becoming a successful investor or trader. 25

he Australian Share Market has recently been affected by the contagion of volatility in equity markets around the world, caused by fear about Europe’s state of debt, and once again causing grief to investor’s portfolios, despite our strong economic position. With this recent volatility, it is a common theme to hear people say” I am not happy with what is happening to my savings – I wish that there was something that I could do about it!” Increasingly so, people are seeing the need to control their finances, or at least, have the knowledge to know how to do so. As the CEO of SMC, Graeme Rogers says’ It is very rewarding to see our members come into the College with a need to explore something outside of their job to secure a comfortable future, and developing the confidence to ‘have a go.’ They realise that, in the end, no-one else looks after their money the way that they do when they have the know how.’ Smart investing with knowledge, means that we don’t have to suffer the wild swings in the value of our portfolios – there are strategies and techniques which allow the active investor to lock in the profits made when markets suffer short term pullbacks. For a reasonable premium, one can hedge the portfolio in these times, and come out the other side with a much different outcome – ‘Over the long term, this may make a considerable difference to the investments you can use for retirement’ Mr Rogers says.

Accredited Qualifications in Dermal Therapy and Cosmetic Nursing Arrives in Queensland The Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science (AACDS) is pleased to announce its new partnership with GrayClay in QLD. Manish Shah from The Nursing Post talks to AACDS about this exciting new expansion and what it will mean to the cosmetic profession. delivering educational courses in medical aesthetics and cosmetic injectables since 2008, and are thoroughly pleased to increase our scope of training to include AACDS courses”. Jacqueline and Sue hold their student clinics at Dr John Flynns Cosmedic Medical Practice. Dr. Flynn MBBS, Dip RACOG, FRACGP, Dip.P.Derm (UK) FACCS, an educator himself to the medical profession, has been an inspirational supporter of GrayClay. The partnership will initially commence with GrayClay delivering the core practical competencies in the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing and the Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science. By February 2011, face-to-face theory classes will be delivered on campus. Local and international students are welcome. Dr Jayson Oates, Medical Director of AACDS states, “We have a big year of curriculum growth planned, which includes two new accredited qualifications – a postgraduate course specifically for doctors and a new Advanced Diploma which encompasses both nursing and dermal therapy units. This, combined with our expansion in Queensland means more well-trained nurses and therapists for cosmetic doctors to recruit.”

Those in the industry will be aware that AACDS has been delivering accredited qualifications in cosmetic nursing and dermal therapies for sometime now. Located in Perth, AACDS infiltrated through Australia and overseas via its online education program with practical training in dermal therapies and injectable procedures offered in WA, NSW and now QLD. Director of AACDS, April Jorgensen reports, “A large portion of our students come from Queensland, and therefore had to travel to Sydney to complete their practical training, also some students wish to study on-campus rather than online. What’s your Story
Going the Extra Mile by Jodie Chaplain
W
e work on an Oncology/ Haematology Ward, in a public hospital in Melbourne, and are lucky enough to get the privilege to help a patient and their family through what can be a very difficult time. Sometimes that even includes end of life care. Recently a patient was with us and her family kept a bedside vigil, as her life deteriorated and ended late one night. Her two daughters were by her side when she died. Making one of the hardest calls they have probably had to make, even though her death was inevitable, it is never easy. They called their brother, who then had to tell his father and her husband of many years that his wife was gone. The husband suffered a major stroke moments after he was told the news. The ANM in charge of the shift told the family to make sure that the son told the responding Ambulance Team what had just happened and to make sure that they bring him to the same hospital. The ANM then proceeded to call
down to the Emergency Department and notify them of what had happened. The nurse in charge of the ED organised it so the he had a nurse looking after him that would allow her to be out of the ED for a period of time. He was brought to the ED, had his full stroke work up and stabilised. He accompanied by his ED nurse was brought up to the Oncology/ Haematology ward where she was, their beds were put side by side and he held her hand as she had her last rights read by a priest. The family were able to be together in what was the hardest night of their lives. Tears rolling down the left side of his face that had not been affected by his stroke. He was given the time he needed to say goodbye to his wife, his partner, his best friend. None of this would have been possible if not for the quick thinking and team work through many departments that made it possible for such a unfortunate incident to be turned into a moment that he and his family will remember forever.
in 2002, Jodie worked at Box Hill Hospital when she did her grad year. Since July 2002, she has worked on the Oncology/Haematology ward where she is now a Clinical Nurse Specialist and loves her job! 36
