There are ancient markets (Souks) and other historical relics. The capital Riyadh rivals any modern city in the world in the splendour of its architecture and one of the fastest growing cities in the world! Jeddah, the

wealthiest city in the Middle East, on the coast of the Red Sea, has many exciting and wondrous sights–go scuba diving through red coral reefs, or try camel racing across the desert. The United Arab Emirates are modern and westernised. Dubai is known as the party capital of the Middle East, with Casinos, Nightclubs and a never-ending nightlife. Abu Dhabi offers a slightly slower pace of life but still provides excellent recreation and social facilities, and is rapidly expanding. The desert oasis of Al Ain also offers a unique opportunity to see and experience more of this part of the world. Journeys through time in Arabia. Hi everyone, Many of our nurses who are thinking about a contract in the Middle East often remark that they know very little about the Arabian peninsula except for the modern cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. So I thought I’d try to give you a flavour of some of the journeys of discovery into the heart of Arabia (now Saudi Arabia) so that you’ll be inspired to go and explore on your own. Actually in a broader sense, that’s what living and working in the Middle East is really all about. Bounded by the Red Sea in the west and the waters of the Gulf in the east, the Arabian peninsula consists mainly of Saudi Arabia with the smaller Gulf states of the UAE and Qatar on the Gulf coast and Oman and Yemen in the south facing the Indian Ocean. A huge waterless expanse of shifting sands called Rub-al-Khali or the Empty Quarter in the southern interior formed an effective barrier between most of these states. But the latest research suggests it wasn’t always so. Geological evidence suggests that as early as 5000 years go there were lakes in the Empty Quarter. Also, Saudi archaeologists are reclaiming from the sands a large city complex dating from that period - clearly impossible without abundant water. From an historical-political perspective, Arabia lies at the fault line between a succession of Western European empires and various Eastern empires based in Persia or beyond. For millennia, these two forces have contested for dominance over territory and for access to lucrative trade routes, such as for incense from Oman, the India trade and for spices from East Asia. For example, Octavius Caesar after defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra in Egypt, sent a Roman legion into Arabia to try to wrest control of the lucrative incense trade from the local Arabs. Aided by the Nabateans (of Petra fame), Aelius Gallus took his legion across the Red Sea to what is present day Saudi Arabia, crossed the mountains and headed south towards

Yemen. Unfortunately for Aelius, his force was decimated by thirst and disease before finding any frankincense and he was forced to return in failure to Alexandria. Jumping forward almost 2000 years, it is incredible how little Europeans knew about the interior of the Arabia peninsula until relatively recently - it had remained uncharted and inaccessible. Then, a succession of fascinating characters, mainly English explorers and adventurers, included some memorable women, opened the region to European eyes from 1862 onwards. For example, Lady Anne Blunt, who travelled widely in the region, purchased many Arab horses from the Bedu, and was instrumental in establishing Arabian bloodstock lines in the West. More recently, the accounts of Wilfred Thesiger’s crossings of the Empty Quarter in the 1950s in his book Arabian Sands make for inspired travel reading. The great thing is that a contract to work in Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states) offers you unique access to explore this fascinating land. There are lots of great places to see and experience but I won’t go on about them – that’s for you to discover for yourself, as I did. Perhaps you can rekindle some of the romance and adventure of travellers past like some of our other intrepid candidates – maybe even write a book about your travels. Regards and happy travelling

Bullying

in the Workplace W

Educational Courses, Conferences & Events

hat is bullying? The International Labour Organization defines bullying as “offensive behaviour through vindictive, cruel, malicious or humiliating attempts to undermine an individual or groups of employees” (ILO, 1998). It is a form of psychological violence. One would like to believe that bullying does not take place in the healthcare setting. In fact, bullying is “one of the fastest growing complaints of workplace violence (ILO, 1998)”. Bullying can come from many different sources, such as managers, patients, families, supervisors and colleagues. What are some of the ways in which bullying takes place? The following are several examples: Scenario 1: Your manager holds a meeting to which you were not notified or invited, although all of your colleagues knew. Scenario 2: Your supervisor loudly chastises you in front of a patient and their family members. Scenario 3: Your colleagues continually and subtly harass and

humiliate you in the form of offcolour remarks. Scenario 4: Your supervisor continuously schedules you for overtime on the weekends, although he/she does not expect the same from your colleagues. Scenario 5: A patient’s family member marches into the nurse’s station and calls you names, yelling and threatening you. Bullying in the workplace can have a major impact. Victims of bullying are likely to feel isolated, stressed, depressed and even fearful. They may use more sick time in an effort to avoid the stressful situation. On the whole, staff morale suffers, leading to resignations of victimized staff members and difficulty recruiting into open positions. Patient care may suffer as a result. These are but a few of the negative consequences that bullying can have. As nurses, we have a duty to respect each other and our workplace. This includes not only refraining from bullying behaviour, but reporting such behaviour when it is witnessed.

Mandatory Overtime

in Nursing O

ne of the most contentious issues surrounding the current nursing shortage in many countries is the issue of mandatory overtime, or the practice of forcing nurses to work beyond their scheduled hours as a response to a shortage of staff. As the nursing shortage has intensified globally, many nurses find themselves on the receiving end of mandatory overtime, and find themselves feeling resentful and frustrated. Do nurses have an ethical obligation to work overtime when there are chronic staffing shortages? Some say yes, citing the fact that patients are at risk when staffing levels fall below what is considered safe and acceptable, and that nurses are ethically (and morally) bound to care for their patients, even if it means they must work above and beyond their scheduled hours. Many nurses, not unsurprisingly,

disagree. They not only disagree with this practice because they resent being forced to work more than they want to- they also disagree because there are other important issues involved, the most important of which is patient safety. Fatigued nurses are tired nurses, and tired nurses are more likely to make errors. We are, after all, only human. The precise and exact nature of nursing demands alertness and attention to detail. These factors may be degraded by exhausted nurses working beyond their physical and mental capabilities. Despite issues of patient safety, many nurses worldwide find themselves working more than they should. As more nurses retire and the nursing shortage reaches critical numbers, this issue will continue to be a bone of contention for practicing nurses who wish to work the number of hours they were hired to work- and no more.

experts on the gulf

Finding your way around the Arabian Gulf takes a degree of ingenuity.

The astrolabe was used in ancient times to make astronomical measurements, typically of the altitudes of celestial bodies, and in navigation for calculating latitude. It consists of a disk with the edge marked in degrees and a pivoted pointer.

Early Arab navigators developed the astrolabe, an effective and beautiful instrument which enabled the user to ‘perform such diverse tasks as timekeeping at day and night, surveying, determining latitude, and casting horoscopes.’ One cast brass instrument like this one bears a maker’s stamp and date - Nastulus (Iraq) - 315, corresponding to 927CE - 139 years before the Norman invasion of Britain. If you want to work in Arabia today, you won’t need an astrolabe to find your perfect 44 job but you will need our navigational skills. We

specialise exclusively in Gulf healthcare placements and no-one knows the local health scene as intimately as we do. Our expert advice will help you to make the most of the opportunities on offer - see the examples across the page. And not only do we know what we’re talking about, our services are free, friendly and without obligation, so for the experience of a lifetime, call Christine Kohleis RN or Judit Barta.
