From the Editor... Welcome to Issue 16!

The winner of this issues cover competition was from an article we printed last year. The photo was submitted by the nurses at East Ward of Westmead Private Hospital. The photo was taken to celebrate the retirement of Elaine (far left on the picture) after 50 years of nursing. Elaine has many fond memories of nursing “too many to choose from” she says. One of the funniest things she recalls is as a young student nurse. “I was told by my tutor when I go into a male ward to take a spoon. I didn’t know what she meant but I soon learnt.” Look for upcoming issues of the Nursing Post when we partner with AusmedOnline and Ausmed Conferences to bring you an exciting and unique opportunity to earn Continuing Professional Development hours. Ausmed will be providing a short article followed by a quiz (visit Ausmed for answers) and by completing the quiz you will earn CPD hours as part of your planned learning activities (provided it is relevant to your context of practice). Under the new proposal by the NMBA, all nurses and midwives are required to participate in 20 hours of CPD annually and will be audited to ensure compliance (turn to page 24 to find out more about CPD). The Nursing post and Ausmed will be featuring several of these quizzes allowing readers to partially fulfil their mandatory CPD requirements. So keep a look out for future editions when we announce when the articles and quizzes are featured. And remember to sign up for our newsletter to be in the draw to win $500. The pay is terrible, but the rewards are indescribable! Volunteer to serve onboard the hospital ship Africa Mercy and your life will never be the same.

What We Do - Marthlyn’s Story Marthlyn Smith arrived with thousands of others at a screening day organised by Mercy Ships at the capital of Liberia, Monrovia. Her upper lip and part of her nose were missing as a result of a flesh eating bacterium called Noma. In a three step operation, surgeon Gary Parker restored her face to near normal appearance.

Step 1: Part of Marthlyn’s chin and bottom lip was sewn into the cavity under her nose and her tongue was sewn into the top of her mouth to create a new palate. Step 2: Her new upper lip was separated from the bottom lip and the bottom half of her tongue was cut away leaving her with a new palate

Step 3: Dr Parker tidied up his work

Marthlyn 6 months later

The saddest fact about healthcare in West Africa is that the medical conditions suffered there are relatively inexpensive to correct, but help is difficult to get. On board our Mercy Ship, volunteer doctors and nurses provide free medical care to the poorest of the poor, bringing renewed joy to thousands of patients each year. Mercy Ships currently has volunteer positions available for Ward and OR Nurses to circulate and scrub for our Field Service in Sierra Leone in 2011. Volunteer. Help us bring hope and healing to the world’s forgotten poor by joining us for as little as 2 weeks, or two years!

Life’s less complicated in Arabia. Hi everyone, One of the questions I am most often asked is what it is really like to live and work in the Gulf States such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar. While I could go on about a host of practical issues like the cost of living, social etiquette, business opening times, etc, I think that really doesn’t answer the question. Upon reflection, the overriding sense that I experienced when I worked in Saudi Arabia - and many of our candidates have reported the same feeling - is one of life being essentially uncomplicated and simple. This stems from the fact that, (if you go to the right hospitals), most of the day-to-day things you need to worry about back home are taken care of for you by the hospital. For example, fully furnished accommodation is provided so you don’t have to worry about rents, bonds, difficult landlords etc. Also, if anything breaks down in your accommodation the maintenance department will fix or replace it for you. Utilities, medical care and often medications are provided free. Uniforms are provided and can be laundered for you. Many nurses also hire house cleaners to do the housework and drivers to take them around. These types of services are really very inexpensive and you’re actually helping out some of the more lowly paid workers. You don’t spend hours commuting to work and you have plenty of time off. Apart from these things, there is a prevailing sense of calm, particularly in Saudi Arabia where the locals are extremely polite and hospitable. That’s not to say there aren’t some annoyances such as young hoons driving too fast, but overall there is a very enticing serenity. All of this means that you are freed from most of the irritating chores that seem to take up so much time back home. You can concentrate on the more enjoyable aspects of life - catch up with friends out

experts on the gulf 14

at restaurants, or have people over for dinner to try out your latest culinary extravaganza. Many people use their ample free time to take up a hobby very seriously whether it be art, photography, salsa dancing or triathlon training. Also it’s a great place to study because of the free time, good educational support from the hospital and lack of distractions. The other great pastime for our candidates is planning their holidays. With so much disposable income, (because you get to retain 80-85% of your salary to spend as you please), bags of holidays and colleagues and friends from across the globe, you can do some really memorable travelling. Of course, all this can be severely curtailed if you’ve got problems at work or your accommodation is below par. That’s where Promesse comes in – we pride ourselves on finding you a position well suited to your skills and experience so that you can excel at work and where the accommodation and benefits are first rate so you can be comfortable and relaxed in your new home. All in all, it can be a very pleasant uncomplicated lifestyle where you have the means and opportunity to fulfil your dreams. Our nurses who have had the best time are those who have grasped the opportunities with both hands to have an experience of a lifetime. Regards

What Does It Mean?

C

PD is the acronym for Continued Professional Development. Most states and territories in Australia are now part of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, introduced on July 1st, 2010.

“One of the changes proposed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) will be the requirement that all nurses and midwives are required to participate in 20 hours of CPD on an annual basis and annual auditing will be conducted to ensure compliance.”1 However, this number may fluctuate depending on an individuals qualifications and endorsements. It is recommended that nurses and midwives confirm their specific CPD requirement so as to competently meet their learning obligations. The CPD Registration Standard on the NMBA web site states that: “One hour of active learning will equal one hour of CPD”2. The Board also outlines that “The CPD must be relevant to the nurse or midwife’s context of practice”.

There are a variety of ways one can complete their learning obligations. Below, you will find a short, but in no way exhaustive list of potential examples of active learning:

1. Attending seminars or conferences. 2. Reading textbooks or journals. 3. Conducting or contributing to research. 4. Undertaking relevant online education. 5. Reflecting on feedback, ‘journaling’ and self-evaluation. 6. Working with a mentor to improve practice. Look out for upcoming issues of the Nursing Post as AusmedOnline and Ausmed Conferences provides a short article followed by a quiz (visit Ausmed for answers). By completing this feature you will earn CPD time as part of your planned learning activities (provided it is relevant to your context of practice).

The symposium organising committee cordially invites you to join us in the 2010 Queensland Statewide Trauma Symposium. The 2010 event will run over two days with the first day dedicated to pre-symposium workshops (limited places available), free papers and disaster response and the second day to trauma management and care. The Trauma Symposium is being promoted throughout Queensland to metropolitan and regional emergency physicians, surgeons, intensivists, nurses, paramedics, anaesthetists and others who work in the field of trauma. We are expecting more than 250 delegates. The sessions will be a combination of presentations and panel discussions of real situations that confront those who care for the trauma patient. Discussions will examine each phase of patient care from multidisciplinary and system perspectives and opportunity will be given for questions about various areas of interest explored during the two-day event. 28

About the conference

This conference is for all health workers who care for people with cancer or who are involved in the prevention, early detection of cancer and cancer screening. The conference attracts both specialist cancer nurses and nurses who care for people with cancer in hospitals and communities across Queensland. Although the conference is an initiative of the Oncology Nurses Group, the program is very relevant to all health professionals, highlighting the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in cancer care.

Conference sessions

The 33rd Annual Oncology Nurses Group Conference will feature an exciting educational program relevant to everyday clinical practice in regional and metropolitan settings including current trends in prevention and screening, diagnosis, treatment, psychosocial care, research and health education. It is specially designed for:

• Nurses with an interest in cancer care • Allied health professionals working in cancer care • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers working in cancer care

Why Aren’t More Men Entering Nursing? A

t the present time, many countries are in the midst of recession, with resultant high unemployment rates. At the same time, there is a critical worldwide shortage of nurses. Putting these two facts together, you might think that more men would choose to enter the nursing profession, given that jobs in many sectors are scarce and there is a shortage of nurses. Although the percentage of men in nursing has slowly increased over the past decade, men are still by far the minority in nursing. Estimates of the number of men in nursing range from 5 to 9% among most developed countries. Why is this? Some reasons cited are the image of nursing and gender bias.

The Perceived Image of Nursing as “Woman’s Work” Female nurses have been fighting this image for decades. It is even worse for men, who are often questioned when they voice a desire to enter nursing school, as if nursing is somehow beneath them and

30

their sexuality is suspect when they choose nursing as a career. Male nurses report that their male family members and peers are often unsupportive of their decision to enter nursing school.

Gender Bias

Male nurses are more likely to leave the profession of nursing than their female counterparts. This can be partially attributed to poorer acceptance of men by their female patients. Male student nurses also report less perceived support from their nursing instructors in areas of practice where male nurses seem to be less accepted, such as gynaecology and obstetrics. Whether this is a real phenomenon or imagined, we need to work on altering and enhancing the experience of men not only in nursing school but on the job. The current nursing shortage could be largely mitigated if more men were inspired to enter the profession, yet the seemingly unalterable image of nursing as a female-only career dissuades many from joining a profession that desperately needs them.

experts on the gulf

Find your niche in the Arabian Gulf

Just as the reefs of the Red Sea offer evolutionary niches for multitudinous forms of life, the Arabian Gulf’s healthcare infrastructure offers opportunities for every kind of nurse. One of the main advantages of a stint in the Gulf is that you can really develop your nursing skills, through top-notch training courses that are usually either free or heavily subsidised. You can also gain direct experience of clinical conditions more common there than at home - valuable expertise when44they do occur at home. The right hospitals are

highly focussed on continuing education and on career development. Because Promesse specialises exclusively in placements to the Arabian Gulf, we know what is on offer at particular hospitals, so we are best equipped to give you the expert advice you’ll need to make the most of the opportunities on offer - see the examples across the page. We really know what we’re talking about - and we’re free and friendly, so if you want the experience of a lifetime, call Christine Kohleis RN or Judit Barta for a chat.
