Welcome to Issue 20! The Pirates that won this issue’s front cover competition are the staff from the Cardiac Cath Lab at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. The photo was submitted by Margo Edmunds and here’s what she has to say. “We had a ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ in September and all dressed up accordingly. We also had a gold coin donation to raise funds for one of our hospital volunteers to take part in The Downs Syndrome World Championships in Taiwan. Our NUM Helen Gold is on the far left (with the black cap and sabre ). There were ‘Ahoy me hearrrties’ and ‘Aaarrrghs’ all day long - a great fun day at work!” Congratulations Margo and team for winning the front cover competition with such a fun photo! We would also like to applaud the work to raise money for your volunteer to compete in Taiwan. Well done! Make sure you check out page 16 to view our Feature Profile - Destination Victoria. Whats your Story?

What could I say to That!!

M

y story began many years ago when I was relieving as a nurse unit manager in a busy medical ward! (Aren’t they all!). I was asked by the director of nursing if I would take on a nursing student for a 2 week placement. She had failed her time management in her last placement and as she was due to graduate in three months she needed to spend more time in the ward situation. I agreed to this and welcomed her on board. After the initial orientation to the ward in the first morning, I thought it appropriate that she buddied with a senior nurse on the floor for the rest of the day. The next day I explained to her that she could manage one patient and this would increase to the usual 4 patients the following day. I explained to her the importance of medications, fluids, diet, general hygiene and what the next shift should expect from her care of that patient. I left her after introducing her to her patient and duly went about my day. I suggested that she speak to me if she had any questions at all. The morning went past at a rate of knots which was generally the case. The lunch breaks were all over and we were preparing

for the end of our shift. I had walked past the “said” gentleman patient several times and thought he looked a little dishevelled. Finally I decided to stop and chat to him. His “nurse”was no where to be seen. I asked him politely if anyone had helped him to shower and shave that morning to which he replied “No”. I set off to find the student nurse. She was chatting to another patient. I asked her politely if she had indeed helped her patient to have a shower and a shave. (ie the general hygiene needs we had spoken about) To my surprise she answered quite seriously that she would “just get to know him today, and that she would shower him tomorrow!!” Well what could I say to that!!!!!

ometimes the amount of continuing education courses we are expected to participate in can be overwhelming, time consuming and, let’s face it, downright boring!

From CPR to Fire Safety, Back Care and OH&S, nurses are expected to keep themselves current in many mandated courses required by employers. Many courses are updated yearly so nurses must sit through the same information year after year. An education specialist at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in the U.S. came up with an innovative and fun way to remind staff members of the importance of the environment in terms of patient safety. Cheryl Coleman set up a patient’s room with several environmental issues that could be a safety hazards (a spill on the floor, a sharps in the bed, tripping hazards…) and invited staff members to visit the room and identify as many things wrong in the room as they could. She rewarded the staff who identified

the most things wrong with I-pods. The point of the exercise was to introduce fun, a challenge and a relaxed atmosphere into teaching a very important lesson. Rather than use the traditional lecture format, she chose a method that more than 500 staff members enjoyed and will likely remember. Coleman spoke about “unintentional blindness” that occurs when we become so busy and focused on doing our jobs that we aren’t aware of hazards that are right before our eyes. Her creative program helped staff members to view their environment in a new light. Nurses who are involved in teaching other nurses can learn a lesson from Coleman on how to make learning relevant and fun. When we are engaged in learning, and when learning is enjoyable, the lessons we are taught are more likely to stay with us. Coleman’s exercise was cost-effective and reached a wide audience in a short time frame. Adding a reward to the learning process likely didn’t hurt either, as we all enjoy being awarded or recognized.

f you were to gather together a large group of nurses in a room and ask them why they decided to become a nurse, chances are you would receive the following answer: “because I wanted to help people”. Upon further examination, however, there would probably be many other reasons given for choosing nursing as a career. Among them: 1. Ability to travel: Nursing appeals to those people who love to travel. Opportunities abound to travel the world and work in an exciting variety of places. 2. Variety/Opportunity for advancement- many people think that nurses work only in hospitals, and although many of us do, there are a lot of other places to work in nursing. It is possible to become a nursing supervisor, a nursing administrator, a nursing educator, a nurse anaesthetist, a school nurse, a mental health nurse, a practice nurse, a cruise ship nurse,

a community health nurse...the possibilities are almost endless. Few careers offer such a wide variety of opportunities. 3. Recognition: Again, many would argue that nurses are under appreciated, but nursing is viewed by many lay persons as a “noble profession”. In certain quarters, there is a certain cache associated with the profession. 4. Desire to serve others: This is the most common reason given for wanting to join the nursing profession, as mentioned previously. Although it may be trite, nurses often feel compelled to serve their fellow human beings, and nursing is one method of achieving this goal. Your reason for wanting to become a nurse may have included one of these, or perhaps a combination of these. Whatever your reason(s), you can find fulfilment in one of the oldest professions, one that has grown and evolved to truly include something for everyone.

You can still find pearls in the Arabian Gulf

The Pearl Fountain in Doha pays tribute to the generations of pearl divers who first built the region’s wealth

Development continues at an impressive pace in the progressive nations of the Arabian Gulf, where global financial challenges have not yielded the outcomes predicted by economic critics. Commercial developments in the private sector continue to create some impressive feats of architecture. Governments too are still taking great strides, especially in the healthcare sector, where an increasingly prevalent Western lifestyle is fuelling the growth of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. All this creates more and more opportunities for40 Australian and New Zealander nurses to make

their invaluable and much-praised contribution to the ongoing welfare of the Gulf population. Promesse specialises exclusively in Gulf healthcare placements and no-one knows the local health scene as intimately as we do. Our expert advice will help you to make the most of the opportunities on offer - see the examples across the page. And not only do we know what we’re talking about, our services are free, friendly and without obligation, so for the experience of a lifetime, call Christine Kohleis RN.
