Welcome to Issue 4 of the Nursing Post! Our Congratulations firstly goes to Casey Millar and the wonderful staff from the surgical ward at Central Gippsland Health Service in Sale, Victoria for being our front cover photo winners for this issue! Here’s what Casey had to say about the photo : “My Name is Casey Millar and I work on the Surgical Ward at Central Gippsland Health Service in Sale, Victoria. Our hospital did a poster competition this year for international nurses day. There were some amazing posters, everyone went to a lot of effort and they were all displayed at the front reception where people could vote for the best one. Our ward was the winner! This is a photo of a few of my work mates with the poster that Deb Hogarty, an ANUM on our ward, made for us. It is drawn with charcoal and was an absolute hit. We now proudly display it in the hallway in our ward and would LOVE for it to be published on the front of the Nursing Post! (The Nurses in the photo are (from the left) Casey Millar, Karen Hughs, Julia Nobel, Amber Ronalds, Deb Hogarty, Marg Centra and Gary McMillan).”

Next Publication Details: Issue: 5 Date: 22 March | Material Deadline: 15 March The Nursing Post Pty Ltd - ABN: 28 105 044 282 PO BOX 6213, East Perth, WA, 6892 Ph: +(618) 9325 3917 | Fax: +(618) 9325 4037 E: admin@nursingpost.com.au W: www.nursingpost.com.au

I have rarely been bored, I have often been frustrated. I have cried a lot. And I have laughed a lot. I am constantly surrounded by challenges, experiencing and witnessing triumphs and heartache. Sometimes I forget why I’m a nurse. Sometimes I’m just too busy with so much to do and so little time. Work and life becomes demanding; days are too short for all my tasks and patient’s needs are put paramount, before hunger, thirst and toilet breaks. Sometimes I weaken because I’m human, and I am learning to forgive myself and search for the understanding, courage, strength, knowledge, skill and tenderness I know is in there somewhere so I can continue to face the day. My SDN and fellow workmates help me with this. Being a nurse I’ve begun to see life in a different light and not fret the small stuff as much. We see life beginand end. We see a newborn baby smile as we watch another soul slip away, ironically the two wards are located right next to each other and I have worked on both. We share the grief of our patients, be it the loss of life or a sense of loss following life changes. And as nurses we help others face fear and anxiety with kind words and a gentle touch. At the end of my workday when I have a moment of peace I can often reflect and I’m reminded why I’m a Nurse. It’s all because I care. It’s about knowing what it is to be human with all our faults and frailties, strengths and weaknesses. I never cease to be amazed at people’s capacity for love, courage,

M

y name is Natalie Jefferies and recently I completed my Graduate Nurse Program at St John of God Hospital (Subiaco) in Perth. I was asked to speak at our graduate ceremony where I shared my reflection on my first year as a registered nurse. I am supposed to be representing our graduate nurses and summing up the Graduate experience at St John of God Subiaco where we are lucky to have multiple options to work in many different specialties. So I thought I would share with you my reflection on this year, my first as a registered nurse, what I have experienced and learnt; and what nursing means to me. I did have to borrow some words and ideas from other nurses which resonated with me. Don’t worry I’ll try to be brief. When I commenced my grad program last year I was overwhelmed carrying the immense responsibility of becoming a registered nurse transitioning from student to RN. This past year 10

and endurance especially when times are tough. We get to see people at their worst-and at their best. Some bless you others curse you often as you’re jabbing them with an intramuscular injection or giving them an enema. We are privileged to step into people’s lives and make a difference. And receive satisfaction when someone recovers from an illness or an operation. As we care for our patients’ god’s healing touch is present and his love can be seen in the acts that we do through OUR Patience, Compassion, and Kindness. As nurses we are gifted with a

sympathetic ear and patience to listen. With lips that speak words of comfort to lift a soul in times of worry, when they’re frightened or they’re blue; and to bring cheer joy and laughter to our patients and colleagues’. Nurses have the strength of an oak, and the softness of a mothers’ love. And because they’re so special, I am proud to be one. And thank all the friends’ family and colleagues’ who have and continue to support me to develop into the best nurse or midwife I can be. I feel so lucky to have a job that is my vocation and that I get to do something I love every day.

Arab farmers developed the essentially modern system of agriculture which replaced the Roman export model in the 9th century AD. They built sophisticated irrigation systems, invented cash crops and rotation, and planted summer and winter crops and new crops like sugar cane, rice, citrus fruit, apricots, cotton, artichokes, aubergines and saffron. Today their descendants are building an excellent modern healthcare system, and they need the help of skilled, dedicated Western nurses to do it. At the right hospitals there are great

opportunities for career advancement and continuing your education. You do need expert advice to make the most of the opportunities on offer - see the examples across the page. Because Promesse specialises exclusively in placements to the Arabian Gulf, we know what we’re talking about - and we’re free and friendly, so if you want the experience of a lifetime, call Christine Kohleis RN or Judit Barta for an enlightening and informative chat.
