Healthy Outcomes Through People
The College of Nursing Nurse Leaders Scholarship CM Health is proud to have “Affiliate” status with the College of Nursing. Together with the College, the company have just launched a ground breaking program called the “Emerging Nurse Leaders Mentoring Program”. This will essentially see over 120 Nurses being supported by a full time Mentor assigned to them by the College to support their career growth and sector engagement as leaders amongst their peers. CM Health will support the program financially and also by utilising Chandler Macleod’s on-line competency mapping capability, to identify those candidates who best match the profile of a “Nurse Leader” as determined by Nursing’s luminaries. The goal of the program
is to retain and nurture some of the very best people in Nursing to create stronger leadership across the board in the future. Why Defence Health? CM Health knows the critical role that all Health professionals play within the Australian community at large. This is especially so in supporting the activities of those people who are literally willing to change and even sacrifice their lives protecting us, our culture and freedoms. CM Health understand the challenges that can exist in some areas of Health and that great professionals are sometimes not fully appreciated. This is not the case in the partnership that exists between Defence and CM Health! It is their goal to not
only provide good rates of pay but also a positive environment that is conducive to providing first rate Healthcare outcomes. CM Health appreciate and respect all their people and always work with the Defence facilities and commanders closely to support both the activities of their Healthcare team as well as those of the uniformed personnel. Hi everyone,
Where’s your place in the sun? a revelation - she had become a charming, worldly woman full of enthusiasm and warmth with a circle of friends that stretched across the globe and with travel stories from places we’d hardly heard of. I get a real kick when I see one of our nurses stride into our offices while on holidays, looking like a new person, refreshed and confident and often dripping in gold – what is it about nurses and gold from the Gulf’s souks?
Nurses often ask me why I am so enthusiastic about the Arabian Gulf. Well, that’s an easy one – I had such a fantastic time working there as a nurse that I want other nurses to have a similar experience. But to be less subjective, there are two main reasons. The incredible number and variety of opportunities means that we can find just about the perfect job for all our nurses. Secondly, it really can change your life. The demand for healthcare services in the Gulf is growing rapidly due to population growth, a more affluent population seeking better healthcare and increasing rates of ‘lifestyle’ diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Fortunately the Arabian Gulf states have the financial resources to invest in building and expanding their hospitals.
Working in Arabia is all about a chance to spread your wings while helping your finances and doing something really useful for people who really need your expertise. For many nurses this is a once-ina-lifetime opportunity and we’re proud to help nurses take up and savour that opportunity.
In Saudi Arabia, the rate of development of new hospitals is staggering- around 50 are currently on the go as well as major expansions of existing top class facilities. The scene there is so vibrant that I come back with renewed enthusiasm after every trip. Saudi Arabia generally develops and runs its own hospitals, the best of which are really world class institutions. On the other hand, the UAE has established operating partnerships with some of the world’s finest healthcare institutions. From the USA, Johns Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic and from Europe, Vienna Medical University each have contracts with key hospitals. While in smaller Qatar, plans are well developed for a fabulous new hospital complex that aims to meld the best US healthcare practice with home grown Qatari expertise. These different operating philosophies can provide invaluable experience with different nursing practice systems.
Working in the Gulf is not for everyone. It can be quite difficult at first; you need grit to see you through the early days of your placement. But many nurses grow to love it and to embrace the warm Arab hospitality. Nurses with an amazing variety of motivations and aspirations can and do have positively rewarding experiences there. So, my job can be stated quite simply – to find for each of our nurses, their particular place in the sun. All the best
Chris Christine Kohleis RN Managing Director Promesse (Contact: see inside back page)
A major impediment to further hospital growth in the Gulf is the availability of good nurses. This means there are loads of great opportunities (see inside back cover for examples.) As we all know, because the number of specialties and grades of jobs in nursing is so large, it’s often quite difficult to find a vacant position that matches your skills and experience, let alone your aspirations for promotion. But in the Gulf, finding your perfect job is so much more feasible. Many of our own nurses have done very well in terms of promotions and career development, at top rating hospitals offering world class nursing practice. It’s really gratifying for us to see our nurses developing their high level clinical or managerial skills, which benefits them over their entire career. But it’s not just about high flyers and great promotions. Many of the nurses that we are most proud of are those who have achieved some important personal goals or undergone a real personal transformation. For example, one of our younger nurses was quite shy, but had a great desire to travel. Seeing her after her Gulf experience was

My Middle East Adventure by Zoe
Hi, my name is Zoe and I moved to Saudi Arabia last year. I am an emergency trauma nurse who always wanted to travel overseas and experience nursing in a foreign country. I enquired through CCM and attended an information day which provided me with all the resources I needed to make my decision! Travelling to the Middle East with the help of CCM has been one of the most amazing things I’ve done in my life. I received so much help, support and guidance; everything was outlined and prearranged for me such as accommodation, free flights and airport pickups. All of this has definitely contributed to my time so far being drama free and positive! Once I got here though, it was a huge shock to the system and I heard a lot of other people’s experiences, some good and some not so good.
I took in everything I was told but decided I was definitely going to make this my journey based on my own experiences. I really believe that to survive anything, anywhere, you have to be a person who is able to think outside the box, can cope with change and definitely embrace culture rather than scrutinise it. I’m taking the best out of every situation and I’m not just coping, I’m having a fabulous time. I have made so many friends and the social scene is huge. I barely have a minute to myself; there are compound events and embassy functions weekly. I’m doing more than I would ever imagine doing back home.
There are so many benefits of travelling to Saudi Arabia; Financial, Vacations (it is so easy to travel), the Cultural Experience-something I won’t ever experience anywhere else in the world, the new Friendships and living the Expat Life. Nursing here is so different and everyday is challenging, rewarding, sometimes frustrating but at the end of it I just think ‘WOW’ I’m on the other-side of the world. I hope this has helped anyone interested in travelling to the Middle East. I am so grateful I had the help of CCM. This is so far the most amazing, challenging, eye opening adventure of my life and it’s only the beginning.....the world is at my fingertips! 9

Opportunities for Australian nurses in the USA
Neil Fredericks explores options for working in the USA with Thomas Simon from Euromedstaff
T
he situation for international nurses interested to work in the United States certainly has changed over the last few years. The downturn of the economic situation in the United States has motivated many nurses educated in the US to return to the workforce, thereby reducing the need of many hospitals to rely on foreign educated nurses. Immigrant visas for nurses with BSN degrees which were readily available until 2007 now require long wait times. However, as the economy improves more and more hospitals in the US will once again face staffing shortages. Qualified Australian nurses interested to work in the States have access to E-3 visas created specifically for professionals from Australia interested to work in the US in a ‘specialty occupation’. In this article we are going to explain the potential advantages of working as a nurse in the United States as well as the process to obtain a state nursing license. The process is similar in most states. According to Thomas Simon, president of the Austin, Texas based recruiting firm European Medical Staffing, working in the United States can be a big boost to the career of an international nurse. Unlike in Australia and many other countries around the world, nurses in the United States have a much higher level of decision making authority – and responsibility – over patient care. Nurses in the United States are not simply assistants of physicians but play a much more
vital role in the healthcare system. This allows nurses in the United States to advance and take their practice to levels not achievable for their counterparts in other Western countries. CNN/Money recently proclaimed that some specialty nurses can actually earn more than family doctors. Nurses from Australia interested to work in the United States need a Bachelor of Nursing degree which is part of the requirements to qualify for the E-3 visa. Nurses with 5 years or more prior experience in adult critical care and ICU/NICU have the best chances of finding employment in the States. Australian nurses need to obtain a state nursing license in the US state in which they will be employed. This requires a rather simple and straight forward step-by step process which includes the evaluation of the Australian nursing education as well as the NCLEXRN nursing exam. The entire process should take between 6 and 12 months. Since 2005, European Medical Staffing has developed a system of international nurse recruitment that has proven very successful in Europe and is now being offered to nursing professionals in Australia. Says Simon: “A cornerstone of our business is to give nurses straight forward information so they can make an informed decision if a career in the United States is the right move for them. This article is meant to be the first step in this process.” Simon stresses the
importance of working for a reputable US hospital which has a program in place to properly train and integrate Australian nurses into the US healthcare system as well as opportunities for continuous education. Otherwise, international nurses may never enjoy the full potential a nursing career in the United States has to offer. European Medical Staffing places nurses in reputable US hospitals that recognize that integrating international nurses into their hospital system is as important for them as it is for the foreign educated nurse. Nurses will be employed by the hospital and enjoy all benefits such as health insurance the hospital offers to all its employees. Nurses will not sign a contract until they agree to work in a specific US hospital. European Medical Staffing reimburses Australian nurses US$1,500 for the initial expenses to obtain a Texas nursing license after they have been placed in a US hospital. Looking towards the future, the recent passing of the healthcare reform bill in the United States certainly has eliminated some of the uncertainty about the future of healthcare in the US. While some US health care facilities had to cut staff or saw a decrease in patients due to a lack of medical insurance coverage the reforms put into place will hopefully help reverse this trend. This should translate into greater employment opportunities for well qualified, Australian educated nurses who choose to continue and advance their careers in the States.

Midwifery a destiny since high school emotional it would be, and I knew at that moment that I was going to be a midwife.” Rochelle began her formal education at Central TAFE in Mount Lawley training as an Enrolled Nurse, and in 2007, came to work at St John of God Hospital Murdoch. “I gained so much experience from all the caregivers at Murdoch, while continuing to study. I eventually graduated as a Registered Nurse from Edith Cowan University in 2008 – but I wasn’t finished yet!” she said. Rochelle enrolled in the St John of God Hospital Murdoch and ECU postgraduate midwifery course in 2009, and regards the experience as her toughest challenge. “The course was really demanding, but with the support of St Mary’s Ward caregivers, (Midwifery Program Coordinator) Sue Bradshaw and all the midwives on St Marys, I made it through,” she said. Rochelle was one of 5 graduates from the Post Graduate Diploma in Midwifery and one of 36 graduates from a range of post-graduate nursing courses who were recognised at the ceremony. Since opening in 1994, the hospital has broadened and strengthened its education and training opportunities to a level which now includes partnerships with a diverse number of educational institutes including national and international organisations; comprehensive graduate and post-graduate programs; over 40 hospital based courses and study days; and more than thirty self-directed learning packages.

n early exposure to midwifery while still a high school student, set St John of God Hospital Murdoch Registered Nurse Rochelle Whipp on a journey which recently resulted in being formally recognised as a Registered Midwife.
Rochelle was recognised as part of St John of God Hospital Murdoch’s 2009 Graduate Nurse and Graduate Midwife Certificate Presentation ceremony. Rochelle said a ‘structured workbase learning program’ at high school allowed her to go into the workforce and experience potential careers first-hand. “I chose midwifery and once a week plus two weeks full-time, I went to Woodside Maternity Hospital and observed midwives at work,” she said. “I loved it so much, I stayed there for two years. I remember the first time I witnessed a birth – I had no idea how 16

A New Qualification for Nurses in
Cosmetic Medicine and Dermal Therapies
EDUCATIONAL COURSES, CONFERENCES & EVENTS
Australia’s leading educators in dermal therapies have now expanded to offer Australia’s first postgraduate qualification in Cosmetic Nursing. Manish Shah from the Nursing Post talks to the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science about this much needed and highly sought after qualification. The Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science (AACDS) has been delivering education in the field of cosmetic medicine and dermal therapies to nurses and beauty therapists since 2004. The college and its qualifications have gained significant recognition from the key societies/ organisations in cosmetic medicine and beauty.
Course Content and Duration
After conducting a comprehensive industry consultation, AACDS selected specific units from the Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science and developed new units to make up the six core units in the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing. The following core units cover the key performance areas for Nurses working within the cosmetic medical practice and/or day hospital:
Originally, nurses undertook the same course as the beauty therapists, being the Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science. Nurses enrolling in the course, in particular RNs, often achieved recognition of prior learning for core units such as human biology and psychology. This, plus industry feedback, lead AACDS to develop and accredit a new course specifically for Registered and Enrolled Nurses.
Principles of Cosmetic Nursing
- This unit is specifically developed for Nurses as an introduction to the their role in cosmetic medicine, especially in a day hospital and theatre environment. Lectures focus on the roles and responsibilities of the practice nurse, skin science, pre and post-operative care, theatre dynamics, infection control, day hospital accreditation standards and advanced resuscitation. This unit also provides foundation knowledge for students wishing to complete practical competencies in injectable procedures.
The Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing is a government-accredited course, which focuses on the role of the RN and EN within a cosmetic medical practice and/or day hospital. AACDS Medical Director, Dr Jayson Oates reports, “Although Nurses have the foundation skills as a health care professional, they lack the specific skills and knowledge to apply to the field of cosmetic medicine and surgery”. I’ve found that in-office training requires considerable time and resources. The main goal of the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing is to provide cosmetic physicians and cosmetic/plastic surgeons with qualified, trained and work-ready staff. As regulatory requirements become more stringent and consumers more aware, a formal graduate certificate in cosmetic nursing is highly sought after both by Nurses and their employers. Dr Sharon Phillipson says, As president of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Medicine, I look forward to informing our members of the availability and benefits of this course and it’s graduates.
Cosmetic Science Surgical and Non-Surgical
Essential for the Nurse wishing 26
to work in a cosmetic medical practice, this unit provides an in-depth knowledge of each cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedure. Lectures examine the indications, techniques, complications and recovery involved in common cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures and will also discuss the analysis of facial and body assessment. Lectures are presented by Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons and incorporate DVD presentations of live surgery.
Dermal Science Theory
Dermal Science Theory provides comprehensive learning in relation to the most commonly performed dermal therapies. This unit is comprised of 2 modules;
Module 1: Epidermal Resurfacing Techniques covers chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, skin needling, litigation and insurance issues and written/ photo documentation.
The learning in Dermal Science Theory is further reinforced with a DVD pack demonstrating skills development in all dermal therapies.
Dermal Science Practical
Dermal Science Practical is a hands-on unit in which students transfer their theoretical knowledge into clinical practice. Comprised of three competency units, student achieve competency through performing a required number of treatments (case studies) in the 3 grades of microdermabrasion, AHA peels, Jessner’s Peels, superficial TCA peels, IPL photo rejuvenation and IPL permanent hair reduction. These competencies ensure
to the medispa concept Manage a Practice and Ensure Team Effectiveness. Students will be able to apply these skills to the management and administration of a cosmetic medical practice, beauty salon, day spa or the establishment of their own clinic.
Cosmeceutical Science (Elective unit)
Introduction to Injectables (Optional unit for RNs only)
Cosmeceutical science will significantly enhance the Nurse’s knowledge of overthe-counter cosmeceuticals and prescription pharmaceuticals used in dermatology. This knowledge is beneficial in order to effectively treat common skin concerns and complement cosmetic surgery and/or dermal therapy procedures.
This optional unit will provide Doctors and RNs with an opportunity to learn the theoretical and hands-on skills required to inject BOTOX( and dermal fillers within the appropriate doctor supervised setting. The two-day training course is conducted and sponsored by industry leaders Allergan. Students will be required to perform BOTOX( and JUVERDERM( injections to obtain an internationally recognised industry certificate.
This unit provides an evidence-based approach to specific cosmeceutical ingredients as opposed to branded formulas.
The course runs for a sixmonth period on a full-time basis or twelve months on a part-time basis. Course coordinator April Jorgensen comments, “We’ve found the course duration allows us to deliver a comprehensive and relevant curriculum whilst providing a realistic timeframe and study schedule for most Nurses”.
Flexible Online Training
AACDS specialises in online education for all their qualifications. As a postgraduate course, all students are either working, raising a family or both. Therefore, course delivery must be highly flexible. All theoretical units are delivered via online audio and visual lectures, with the practical units available as a 10 to 14-day block (depending on past experience), which is delivered in Perth or Sydney.
In addition to convenient online lectures, students can nominate the number of units they wish to study per 16-week semester. Busy Mums and/or those working full-time can chose to study only 1 or 2 units per semester. Whereas, those more eager to complete their studies in a shortest timeframe, can study up to 5 units concurrently.
Practice Management and Administration (Elective unit) Managerial and administration skills are an important asset to have in any small business environment and is a skill highly sought after by potential employers.
If you more information on the courses in this article, please contact the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science on (08) 9382 4788 or visit: www.aacds.edu.au
This unit cluster is comprised of two competency units, which have been customised 27
EDUCATIONAL COURSES, CONFERENCES & EVENTS
Module 2: Light-Based Therapies - focused on the clinical practice of IPL, though lecture topics also encompass laser, radiofrequency, infrared and LED technology. In addition to the essential underpinning knowledge of laser and light physics, this module includes an IPL/ Laser Safety Officers Certificate approved by QLD Radiation Health and the Radiological Council of WA.
students develop a high standard of technique whilst maintaining a strong focus on hygiene and safety. All practical workshops take place with only two students per trainer/assessor, ensuring a quality-learning environment and exclusivity to equipment.

INVITATION FROM THE CONFERENCE CONVENOR and high quality of papers submitted, as well as the posters presented. We are conducting workshops encompassing various aspects of Perioperative Nursing and will be holding sessions for Special Interest Groups. This will enable you to have the opportunity to network with colleagues having similar interests. The investiture of Fellows will precede the prestigious Judith Cornell Oration on the Thursday afternoon. The Orator is a Perioperative Nurse who has made an outstanding contribution to Perioperative Nursing in Australia.
The theme for the ACORN 2010 Conference is “Westward Bound - Building a Strong Future”, reflecting on the host State of Western Australia which is the backbone of our pastoral, mining and industrial industries. Without these industries, we have no future. Without challenging the boundaries of Perioperative Nursing, we have no future. It is important that Perioperative Nurses identify, develop and extend their knowledge bases and expand their social networks. Attendance at this Conference is certain to achieve this!
Following these proceedings, there will be the official opening of the Trade Exhibition and Cocktail Party. Our Medical Industry Partners have supported our Conference and for this we are extremely grateful. We have over 120 stands, so please take time to visit the Exhibition and explore new technologies. Whilst it is not all work, there will be the opportunity to play! Come and join us at the Dinner to be held in the Ballroom. The theme of the Dinner is “Jewels of the West.” We encourage you to come dressed for an evening of fun! During the Dinner we will be presenting the Excellence in Perioperative Nursing Award. Once the official proceedings of the evening are completed, this will give our delegates the chance to party in the Wild, Wild West!
Keynote Speakers include Professor Mary Chiarella (Chair of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council and Professor of Nursing, University of Sydney), Professor Bruce Barraclough (President of the International Society for Quality in Health Care and Chair of the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission) and Dr Charlie Teo (Neurosurgeon, philanthropist and Director of the Centre of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery). We are fortunate to have these keynote speakers who will provide us with a depth of knowledge and experience.
I look forward to meeting you at the 14th National ACORN Conference.
I am sure there will be something of interest for all Perioperative Nurses whether beginning Practitioners or advanced. I am extremely pleased with the large number

experts on the gulf
Arabia rocks.
The mysterious Nabataeans were among the first known inhabitants of key parts of Arabia. A strong Arab tribe famed for its trading empire, it became an ally of imperial Rome before gradually submerging in the burgeoning Arab culture. The Nabataeans built these impressive tombs at Mada’in Saleh in Saudi Arabia, as well as their capital city of Petra in Jordan. Today their building tradition lives on in the form of an excellent modern healthcare system, and skilled, dedicated Western nurses are needed to help develop it further.
At the right hospitals there are great opportunities for career advancement and continuing your education. You do need expert advice to make the most of the opportunities on offer - see the examples across the page. Because Promesse specialises exclusively in placements to the Arabian Gulf, we know what we’re talking about - and we’re free and friendly, so if you want the experience of a lifetime, call Christine Kohleis RN or Judit Barta for an enlightening and informative chat.
