Social life in Arabia An occasional contribution from Chris Kohleis, Managing Director of Promesse Hi everyone, Most people considering a stint in the Arabian Gulf ask about the social life they can expect. The answer is - it depends. The social scene is different in different places and so it is important to consider where to work from the point of finding a social scene that suits you. If you went to work in Riyadh, in the centre of Saudi Arabia, you might think your activities would be limited. After all, you’d be in the middle if the desert and there are supposed to be lots of restrictions in Saudi. In reality, Riyadh has an extremely vibrant expat social life with a continuous stream of social events and get-togethers, from functions at the various embassies - Australian, Irish, British, American etc - to an array of activities organised by hospital recreation departments: sporting events - quad biking, hash harriers, embassy balls, salsa dancing classes, day spas, short trips away or simply dining out at the huge variety of restaurants. Living in ‘compounds’ in Saudi results in a more cohesive social network than you might experience when living by yourself in any city. Furthermore you will meet people from all over the world, which can be a very stimulating and rewarding experience in itself. Some places have more organised activities than others and some offer particular attractions - Jeddah on the Red Sea coast of Saudi offers easy access to the some of the best diving in the world. In the UAE, life in centres such as Abu Dhabi or Al Ain can be very pleasant indeed. Abu Dhabi, the modern capital located on a island adjacent to the coast, offers a lifestyle similar to any modern city but with an exotic Arabian flavour. Life in the UAE requires more effort to establish social networks than in Saudi. Wherever you go, you have plenty of free time and it’s all your own - you don’t have to commute, queue to pay bills or even go shopping. You can spend it on short trips within Arabia or abroad, or you can pursue your interests seriously with like-minded people. Some of our nurses have become accomplished photographers and artists.

If you’d like to know more about the social scene at different places, give me a call (telephone nos below) and I’ll be happy to chat to you. Regards

Chris

In the end, it all depends on what you are comfortable with. We’ve sent thousands of nurses ahead of you and with our informed advice they have had great experiences at locations right across the Gulf.

experts on the gulf

From my point of view, apart from doing well at work and earning a high disposable income, it’s always great if our nurses embrace the other elements that are on offer in Arabia. Whether it be exploring Red Sea reefs, pursuing a passion for photography or taking really fabulous holidays, doing these things with friends makes them so much more enjoyable. Great friendships are the legacy of many a Gulf experience.

Live-in care also provides comfort and reassurance for anyone who suffers from degenerative illnesses such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or dementia. Nicola Warner, Managing Director, Christies Care said; “Our clients are looking to maintain their dignity at home and live-in care helps them achieve this. We provide trained and compassionate care assistants who live-in with our clients round the clock, providing all the care and support they need.” As a live-in care assistant you would provide companionship for your client and manage housekeeping duties such as cooking and cleaning For those clients who have more complex needs our care assistants work alongside community nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure the client has the right level of support to remain living at home, independently and safely.

Community Article The theme for International Nurses Day in 2010 is “Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Chronic Care” With International Nurses Day being an occasion to discover about the vocation of nurses and their workplaces, a lot of hospitals, day centres, wards, etc organise open days, coffee mornings, finance raising actions and generally utilise the day for health care promotions and to raise the profile of the vocation. Nurses globally are occupied in pioneering performances on an everyday basis ensuing in important developments in the physical conditions of patients, populations and health systems. Their aids have been a basic foundation of development for health care organizations around the globe. They toil in all kind of locations and in the service of an extensive district of patients, families, neighbourhoods and health care workers. Fresh answers by nurses also stand for a very important constituent in hard works to deal with present global health confrontations such as the augmentation in non-communicable diseases, more composite infectious and rising illness aging populations, insufficient resources and labour force scarcity. Thus every year, on the 12th of May, nurses observe nursing day and elevate the profile of their vocation in a diversity of customs and proceedings. Few can say they are unaffected by the hard work and devotion of nurses in Australia and all through the world. It is also a day for nurses globally to commemorate their line of work and join to take delight in their jobs and demonstrate the humanity and the importance of their vocation.

The Origins and History of Nurses Day devotion and tuition of fellow nurses. The International Council For Nurses (ICN) in America commenced the happenings in 1965, although it was not formally known by the US Government until 1974. In 1999 nurses and public sector workers union UNISON called for a operation to alter the date and get rid of the past significance of Florence Nightingale from Nurses Week for the reason that they believed that she no longer mirrors present day nursing because of her class and communal milieu. They considered that she was not in observance with the multicultural character of present nursing.

Even though a National Nurses’ Day was first planned in 1953, it was not, until 1974 that the things actually worked out, when the International Council of Nurses publicly proclaimed May 12 as International Nurse Day.

Unison recommended the day be observed on 21 May which was the birthday of Elizabeth Fry. She was a 19th century reformer who established the Institution of Nursing Sisters quite a few years before Florence Nightingale set up her own nursing team. She went on to perk up the life of the psychologically ill and made many improvements in hospitals. However the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) differed with this movement and were backed by a lot of more nurses who believed that Florence Nightingale was a significant creator of contemporary nursing and must truly be kept in mind and celebrated on International Nurses Day.

After that in 1982 President Ronald Reagan signed a public statement that recognized a countrywide day of adherence for nurses on May 6, however this was later on extended to a week long commemoration to take in May 12. In 1997 the American Nurses Association elected May 8 as National Student Nurses’ Day. The reason that Nurses Day is observed on the 12th May every year is for the reason that this is the birth date of Florence Nightingale. She made many improvements to nursing and health care and radically cut the death rate amid soldiers in the Crimean War as a consequence of her hard work, 18

EDUCATIONAL COURSES, CONFERENCES & EVENTS

Simulation Education at ECU New Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Simulation Edith Cowan University understands that the healthcare industry is ever-changing and constantly evolving. In line with this, we’ve responded to the many industries that are now using simulation in their curriculum development with the introduction of a new Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Simulation course.

Such simulations are particularly important for the clinical setting with a pathway specific to clinical teaching and learning. Industry has identified the need for a program to educate the educators to enable them to plan, implement, facilitate and evaluate simulated based learning programs aligned to curriculum outcomes. Few industries however, have the background knowledge to develop, implement and facilitate simulation learning programs effectively so as to ensure the curriculum outcomes are met.

A well designed simulation simplifies a real world system while heightening awareness of the complexity of that system. Students can participate in the simplified system and learn how the real system operates without spending the days, weeks, or years it would take to undergo this experience in the real world.

This is the first such qualification offered in Western Australia specifically addressing the needs of health professionals in the clinical or actual experiential setting.
