New app finds doctors

Finding a doctor is now even easier! Gone are the days of searching for contact numbers and storing doctors’ details in an address book, thanks to a new smartphone app developed by St John of God Health Care – providing information at the touch of a fingertip, 24 hours a day. With more than 16,000 medical, health and fitness apps now available, St John of God Health Care is pleased to launch its own specialised app – a „Find a Doctor‟ search application that can be downloaded to iPhone or android phones free of charge. The innovative new app allows users to quickly and easily obtain contact details of any accredited specialist across the organisation‟s hospitals in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Furthermore, users can search for a doctor by name, specialty or location, and an additional favourites function allows customers to save the details of preferred doctors for easy future access. St John of God Health Care‟s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Michael Stanford, said it was the organisation‟s commitment to innovation that led to the development of the app and consideration had already been given to other app concepts. “In the last few years, we have had increasing requests from patients to provide contact details of doctors, as many patients now like to choose their preferred specialist. This was a key driver for the creation of the „Find a Doctor‟ search which is available on our website home page. We then replicated this useful feature as an app to further improve efficiency and save time for our customers, by providing information at the touch of their fingertips,” Dr Stanford said. “We constantly review the ways and means in which we provide our customers, and the community in general, with information. Our website, social media including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, brochures and now the addition of the app ensures we are meeting the varying needs of our customers.” The app can be downloaded for free at any time from the AppStore via iTunes or the Android Market by searching „SJGHC Find a Doctor‟. Concentration on FIFO misses the point The current spate of media interest in the effects of fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) and drive-in/drive-out (DIDO) and the House of Representative’s Standing Committee’s inquiry into FIFO workforce practices are heartening but are missing the wider point, according to Dr Jennifer Bowers, Chief Executive Officer of the Australasian Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health. “The fact is that FIFO and DIDO are just two stressors among many that have negative impacts on the mental health of mining and remote construction workers. There are plenty of others,” said Dr Bowers. “Long days, harsh environments, extreme weather, alien living conditions and dangerous work-sites where a momentary lapse in concentration can result in injury or death – all these can and do contribute to mental disorders such as destructive thinking, depression, anxiety disorder and acute stress disorder. And in turn, these are all implicated in things like alcohol and substance misuse, workplace bullying and interpersonal conflict,” she said. Dr Bowers said that great attention is now paid to physical health and safety in the mining and remote construction sector yet, sadly, the attention paid to mental health is either non-existent or perfunctory. “This lack of real focus on mental health is dangerous and expensive in terms of lost productivity and reduced profit. A worker with a mental health issue is known to be 41% more likely to have an accident. It’s high time Boards and senior managers took mental health as seriously as physical health and safety.” “A half-day PowerPoint workshop on depression and a box of brochures dumped in a canteen or a crib room do not constitute an integrated, sustainable, whole-of-business mental health strategy,” she said.
