1. Demand!

With current hospital projects close to completion, extra beds being added with the addition of an ageing population, more nurses are required to maintain patient-to-nurse ratios. If you prefer continued learning and professional development for nurses and midwives, then WA is really the place for you.

Celebrating WA’s Longest Serving Nurses

One veteran nurse, Lindsay Briggs, who worked for Kaleeya Hospital, stated that the nursing profession had changed “tremendously” within her 54 years of experience. She was also the very first nurse to fly with the Royal Flying Doctor Service back in sixties.

Ms Briggs said that “technology has made a huge difference, and nursing is more mentally stimulating than in the past. Nurses now are more technologists then old-style nurses.

According to the longest serving nurses in Western Australian history, nurses deserve more recognition as being one of the hardest professions to work for in the health system.

A breakfast to be held at the Burswood Entertainment Complex will be honouring over 90 nurses and midwives who have donated their services for over half a century or more. These nurses have set the standard and also contributed to shaping the field of nursing today, Health Department director-general Kim Snowball stated.

“The Western Australian health system is very fortunate to have quality, experienced staff that are supporting the growth and development of the next generation of nurses and midwives,”Mr Snowball said.

“I don’t like the training being uni-based; I think it should be hospital-based to get the practical experience.”

Ms Briggs also reflected over her time spent at the Royal Flying Doctors, “I loved it, it was great fun and I’m very fond of the people up there. We used to do weekly clinics in the Kimberley. On the weekends we would take the plane to Broome and camp on Cable Beach.”

Another veteran ward nurse of 52 years, Deidre Scadding who won the Nurses Excellence Award in 2003, stated that it was always going to be a hard and strenuous job caring for the sick in hospitals today, which still comes with no gratitude or recognition.

Ms Scadding also believes that the essentials of nursing practice have changed significantly due to technological advancements as she reflected on her 24 years working at Fremantle Hospital.

“Back in the day, we didn’t have pumps to do the IV fluids, you had to count the drips and make sure it was the right number per minute, but the basics of nursing care have never gone away. Nurses need to have empathy, compassion, and a desire to help people.”

Artist’s Impressions: Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency entrance

The new flagship healthcare facility currently being built in Perth, Western Australia, is said to become the leading facility in Australia. The Fiona Stanley Hospital, named after Australian of The Year and well renowned Professor Fiona Stanley, is expected to open in May 2014, with positive reports stating that this huge project is on top their time and budget goals.

The new tertiary hospital will be located in Perth’s southern metropolitan area of Murdoch, and will provide health facilities and services to local communities within the area, as well as to the rest of the state.

“The hospital is changing so rapidly as construction moves ahead and it is great to compare the artist’s impressions with reality and see how far the project has come,” stated WA’s

Premier Colin Barnett, who also agreed that it was exciting and very promising to see that the new public hospital is keeping to its’ budget and timing deadlines.

Health Minister Kim Hames stated that approximately 83% of the patient rooms in the main hospital are going to be single rooms. This will allow for successful infection control, fewer patient transfers, as well as improved patient privacy.

The $2 billion hospital is set to be the leader in clinical care, research and education, as well as utilizing the latest innovative design, scientific, technological and medical developments.

The project began in 2004, when the State Government set out to improve the health system for Western Australia as part of an initiative to support the state in regards to meeting the demands of the growing population. Now that has become a total reality with the State Governments all committing to the most ambitious and extensive health reform project ever undertaken in Western Australia.

Leading Facility for WA “State-of-the-art technology will be integrated into every level of the hospital and the landscape design includes a wide range of outdoor gardens and parks for all to use,” Dr Hames said.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon stated that, “the new Rehabilitation Centre will give

patients and their families’ access to world class rehabilitation services and is part of the Gillard Government’s commitment to providing more beds and better services locally.”

“The Commonwealth Government has invested $255.7 million for the new 140-bed centre which will provide specialist high level services for patients including those with serious injuries including: acquired brain injury, spinal, trauma and complex pain as well as neurologicalconditions such as motor neurone disease.”

Western Australia is expected to receive a beneficial $1.8 billion funding in growth from 2014 till 2015. Special Minister for State and Member of Brand, Gary Gray, stated that the rewards that the local community and economy of WA will reap are extremely beneficial.

“The West Australian Government’s decision to sign onto national health reform now means the Gillard Government can start to deliver even more health reform benefits to WA,” Minister Gray said.

“Whether it be more GPs or specialists, or more funding for hospitals, it is clear the Gillard Government is helping to build a modern health system that will provide better health care for West Australians,” Ms Parke stated.

And not to mention the number of employment opportunities the new hospital will attract. Due to the number of specialty facilities and superior technologies being implemented into the new hospital, multiple specialist doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals will be required to effectively run the hospital and look after the large number of patients this new facility can accommodate.

The Fiona Stanley hospital will include a variety of features and services such as: - 783 beds including 140 beds in the State rehabilitation service - 6,300 rooms in 150,000 sqm of floor space over five main buildings – this is equivalent to four city blocks - Emergency care unit, including a major trauma centre - A wide range of cancer services including radiotherapy treatment facilities, medical oncology and haematology - An extensive range of surgical and acute medical services, including Paediatrics - State Burns and Rehabilitation services - Obstetrics and neonatology services - A world-class medical research facility to be built in conjunction with universities and the Western Australian Institute of Medical Research - Pathology, Bio-medical engineering and cell tissue manufacturing facilities - A Mental Health unit with Mother & Baby unit - Renal transplantation and Dialysis services - The latest medical imaging centre that will help to create fast and accurate information for clinicians

t shouldn’t surprise you to learn that researchers estimate that most people spend almost 80% of their day communicating (Thomas 2007).

What may be surprising is that nearly half—45%—of that time is listening.

While you may concentrate on time you spend speaking to others, how much effort do you give to the five or six hours every day that you spend listening to your patients, co-workers, family and friends? Are you one of those who mentally “check out” when others are speaking to you?

If you are guilty of letting your mind, and actions, wander to other things when you should be listening, you are putting yourself in greater risk of conflict. According to the University of Colorado Conflict Research Consortium (2008), poor listening skills are at the root of many workplace conflicts. But for a nurse, communications with patients and co-workers is a key aspect of providing good nursing care. It is important that nurses use , rather than task-centred, communication.

Listening is a key component of patient centred communication. In a busy hospital setting, a nurse may be the only person who takes the time to listen to their patient to try to understand his problems and concerns.

Although many believe that listening is an automatic act, good listening skills are only acquired after study a practice. In fact, a great deal of study has been done on different listening styles and patterns. One of 36

the more effective styles of listening is active listening. A nurse who is an active listener uses techniques that engage the patient in order to improve mutual understanding.

This involves focusing on the speaker, asking questions, validating what is said and allow time to process the information (Orcajada & Lourdes 2005). Active listening can help make patients, who can feel isolated and invisible amidst a constant stream of unfamiliar people, procedures and equipment, retain their sense of self (Klagsbrun 2003). To become a better active listener, follow these steps.

1) Concentrate on what is being said.

This means that you give your patient your full attention. Don’t interrupt. And don’t try to multitask by reading the chart, adjusting the bed or checking the area.

There is only one exception to this rule (It is explained in tip #3).

2) Take notes while your patient is talking. This is the exception to the “no multitasking” rule. But only write what you are hearing. Ask your patient to pause and let you write, if needed. Then refer back to your notes as you proceed to the next two steps.

3) Paraphrase the message to make sure you understand the point your patient is trying to make. For instance, if your patient has been talking about the number of medicines that he is taking, you can paraphrase that back as, “You are concerned how the drugs interact with each other. Is that correct?

4) Ask for clarification. Patients who are nervous and fearful may give you information that doesn’t seem to relate to their illnesses or even the concern they are trying to voice. Or they may not understand what has been told to them prior to your conversation. Take the time to untangle the information to make sure you understand what they are trying to convey.

Then summarize in your words. If your perception is incorrect, ask questions until you are on the same page as your patient.

Listening is an art, not a science that must be learned and practiced. But in the end, it can reduce on the job conflict and improve patient care.
