NEVER
TOO
LATE
by Christopher Nikolic
M
y name is Christopher Nikolic and I was a mature aged nursing student. I would like to share a little story with you as I feel very proud of my achievements so far.
I
am a sole parent having raised 8 children (yes 8), on my own for almost 12 years. I do not get respite other than going away a night or two every week for work commitments. 20
Early days were difficult to say the least. However, in 1999 I started my nursing career as an AIN while studying my Cert 4 in Aged Care and Assistant Nurse. At the time I had all 8 children at home and I worked for a community nursing agency between the hours of 9 and 2, so I could take kids to day care, school and then pick them up. Following this I continued to pursue my nursing career by enrolling into TAFE and completing my Diploma of Nursing in 2006. By the end of that year I realized I had found what I wanted to do career wise. In 2007 I commenced my Bachelor of Nursing at USQ. My children have been very supportive throughout this journey and by this stage I had only 3 kids at home as the older 5 have flown the nest. At the beginning of my university career I was afraid of what to expect. However, I soon developed skills, which I thought I couldn’t attain, I am now able to use a computer more accurately, developed the ability and skills to apply myself in a manner which yields positive results, and most importantly for me, confidence. My studies has given me knowledge
and new skills and I am ready to apply these new skills without negative thought. I didn’t realize that I needed to fine tune my academic writing skills for each specific assignment and subject but this course has helped me to understand the similarities in academic writing. I didn’t know how to do a thesis before but I have the opportunity to develop these skills. This course has given me knowledge and new skills, which I thought never existed and now I am able to apply all my past learning skills and techniques in the hospital setting with ease. It is possible for any sole parent to achieve anything they wish and I hope I can inspire others to pursue their goals and dreams. I was registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (AHPRA) on the 15th December 2010 and I’m now starting my career as a Registered Nurse! I have been accepted at USQ to complete my Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice, Rural and Remote, and I plan to complete all my studies with a Masters of Nursing. 21

Five steps for Improving
SELF-CONFIDENCE You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
- Dr Seuss
This sums up the value of self-confidence, at least according to that great philosopher, Dr Seuss. The truth is that many of us are our own worst enemy when it comes to achieving success. It’s not that the lack of skills that stands in the way, but rather a lack of confidence in skills. People who are self-confident share certain personality traits, including: • A feeling of worthiness and approval. They don’t depend upon affirmation from others, but approve of themselves. • Knowledge of what they want out of all aspects of their life, from relationships to their work life. • Acknowledge their own strengths and weaknesses, building on the strengths and accepting weaknesses as part of who they are. • Are good in relationships of all kinds. Self-confidence makes people relaxed and comfortable in many settings. The ability to voice their opinion while accepting a different point of view from others. • Most importantly, people who are self-confident believe in their ability to achieve their goals. But they are realistic about their abilities, and as such have realistic expectations of themselves. 30
Self-confidence is an acquired characteristic. While it can be nurtured in childhood, all is not lost for those adults who suffer from a lack of self-esteem. According to psychologist, author and academic Dr Thomas G. Stevens: “Self-confidence has to be worked on and is not necessarily true in all aspects of a person’s personality. A stage performer may exude all the confidence of a star performer while on stage but may not be confident to be a guest speaker in a symposium on American history. One cannot be self-confident without adequate preparation, practice or experience.” In his book, “You Can Choose to Be Happy”, Dr Stevens describes steps you can take to build confidence at any age. Here are five. 1. DON’T CONCENTRATE ON NEGATIVES. You can find something positive in most situations. Just because you didn’t reach a goal in the past doesn’t mean you are unable to succeed or that you didn’t accomplish something along the way. Making an effort is valuable in itself, whether or not you achieve the desired level of success. Thomas Alva Edison, who invented the light bulb, and the phonograph, had more than 1000 patents on equipment and processes that were not considered successful. He made this famous comment on failure, “I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” If your goal is to learn or grow, you can never fail
2. VISUALISE SUCCESS. Visualising helps you to develop a road map to success. Use mental imagery to practice meeting people, performing a difficult task, or to learn a new skill. Many successful athletes use visual imagery to perfect their skills. In fact, in an experiment, Australian students who used mental imagery to practice shooting baskets did as well as those who practiced in the gym.
It will help you gain confidence on several counts. In the first place, it will put to rest your doubts over your ability in one area. Then you will have the relief of knowing it is done. And you will prove to yourself that fears and doubts you had were self-made, like the monster in the closet!

4. SET REALISTIC GOALS. Many of us jeopardise our own success by setting unrealistic goals. Set goals that are within your capabilities.

5. COMPLETE A TASK THAT YOU HAVE BEEN DREADING OR AVOIDING. There is no relief like that of finishing something that has been nagging at you for a long time.

3. BE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT YOURSELF THAN ABOUT HOW YOU IMPRESS OTHERS. Depending upon approval from others is a sure sign of a lack of self-confidence. When you think about your actions or accomplishments, measure them only in terms of your own satisfaction. You can value other people’s input. Just don’t let it define you.
