Critical Thinking Skills Critical thinking is a vital part of nursing care, particularly as the profession becomes ever-more complex and accountable. Critical thinking encourages us to use reflection and intellectual reasoning to make relevant, focussed and creative decisions in our practice. Nurses who employ critical thinking are continually questioning actions and analysing outcomes rather than practising their craft by rote.
An article by Lunney (2003) discusses seven cognitive skills of critical thinkers in nursing. These were originally described by Scheffer and Rubenfeld (2000) after studying the opinions of a number of nurses who had written about critical thinking topics. These seven cognitive skills are identified as: 1. Analysing - i.e. breaking down a situation into its parts in order to determine possible meanings.
2. Applying standards - the nurse selects specific standards that he/she believes fits a particular situation, and then considers how these standards can be applied and whether they are applicable to the situation. 24
3. Discriminating - in discrimination, the nurse considers how a situation is similar to, or different from, other similar situations faced in the past. 4. Information seeking - this is used to decide whether further information is needed and where further information can be obtained, as well as the practice of obtaining needed information.
6. Predicting - In this step, the nurse anticipates different outcomes that may arise from using data in different ways and considers diagnoses in relation to interventions. 7. Transforming knowledge - the nurse uses knowledge gained from past experiences and adapts that

How do I become an aged care nurse?
Aged Care What does an aged care nurse do?
Aged care nurses are responsible for taking care of the ageing population of the community, from over 65 years of age and older. This includes assistance with dayto-day activities, health promotion, pain management, wound care, palliative care and family education. As an aged care nurse, you need to have well developed diagnosis, assessment, treatment and evaluation skills, specifically for your elderly patients, as well as have the appropriate knowledge and skills necessary within your chosen area of practice. Here are a few fields of aged care nursing that might interest you: Acute Care: Within this field of practice, you are responsible for liaising closely with community nurses and other health care professionals to better develop an appropriate plan of care for the patients within hospitals, for when they return to their homes. Community care: You will find many great opportunities to work independently, or in partnerships with families, other healthcare providers or small multidisciplinary teams. You may be required to visit patients within their home residences, or community centres where they may be based. Residency Care: This is where the most current and innovative nursing homes provide their patients with good quality of life and health. This is specifically for the elderly unable to care for themselves on a daily basis. Rehabilitation: This is for nurses who are interested in looking after patients with a variety of physical health problems, ranging from strokes, amputations or severe fractures, to serious surgical recoveries, debilitation of complex health issues and acute medical episodes. An aged care nurse must also have excellent communication skills as they will be required to communicate to their elderly patients, 28

Online professional learning available at nurses’ fingertips HEALnet (Health Education And Learning Network) is an Australian internet-based online learning package for the nursing profession. The package offers short, accessible online learning sessions that keep nurses up to date with specific medical practices and, consequently, up to date with their professional development requirements. Karyn O’Reilly, Head Teacher, Nursing at Coffs Harbour Education Campus, who has led a team from North Coast TAFE that developed the package, says that she is delighted to see the offering steadily becoming more popular. “Having been a busy, time-poor nurse, and nursing educator, I know what it is like to keep up with professional education requirements,” says Ms O’Reilly. “I believe that HEALnet is the ideal solution - for many reasons. Each unit takes only around 60 minutes, it fulfils continuing education requirements, it delivers the most up-to-date information in nursing procedures and theory and you don’t have to spend time going to a classroom. Being online, it fits around each
individual’s schedule,” says Ms O’Reilly. The HEALnet program is available via the HEALnet website www.healnet.edu.au and features a range of innovative online learning approaches. “For example, after reading a professional written article, you can test your knowledge with an online quiz, which might include click-anddrag tests,” says Ms O’Reilly. “You can also get immediate results, and opportunities to re-do the evaluation.” 52 units are now available, with many more coming online in the future. One unit is free so you can trial HEALnet. Annual subscriptions are available for an introductory price for individuals at $160 (Normally $260), which can be paid online by the student giving them unlimited access to all units, vodcasts, presentations, the journal club and the Joanna Briggs Institute. Midwifery What does a midwife do?
Midwives take care of mothers before, during and after a baby is born. They help in the assistance of normal births, as well as being able to recognize and give emergency medical assistance with any problems that may arise until a doctor is present. Midwives are trained to recognize abnormal factors, as well as apply preventative measures in the baby and mother throughout their entire pregnancy and birthing experience. They also provide support, education and safety advice for mothers, as well as assisting in caring for the newborn infant after birth.
How do I become a midwife?
You must be a registered nurse to be able to qualify for entry to a midwifery education program in Australia. What does a Mental Health nurse do? Mental Health nurses monitor the biological dimensions of mental illness of their patients through medication administration, behavioural observations and interpretation. They must protect the patients’ rights and support their families and carers in line with current trends and reforms. There’s a variety of sub-specialties within mental health nursing, which include; community based rehabilitation, adolescent mental health, alcohol and drug abuse, as well as psycho-geriatrics. All mental health nurses do work with a variety of patients suffering from different illnesses. However, particular hospitals or health facilities may run specialized programs to focus on particular illness groups, such as; bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, eating disorders, personality problems, traumatic reactions as well as patients with multiple diagnoses, such as mental and physical illnesses. A mental health nurse needs to have good communication, listening and interpreting skills, to be able to understand a patient’s condition and to be able to recognize what it is they are not saying, as well as what they are.

Once you have all the above criteria, you can qualify to study to become a nurse practitioner at universities that offer this course as a post graduate master’s degree.
The clinical areas where nurse practitioners can practice are many and varied. You may prefer to practice in mental health, community health, rural and remote areas, neonatal, cardiac and cardiology, endocrine, paediatrics, the emergency department, chronic pain management and midwifery, just to name a few. Nurse practitioners already practice at an advanced level, and it is one of the highest qualifications you can have as a registered nurse.

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse by qualification. A nurse practitioner must provide innovative and flexible knowledge and skills to produce flexible health care delivery that complements other health care providers. COSMETIC SURGERY in demand as Australians go on

The latest non-surgical procedures, laser and botox treatments are steadily growing in demand, as heard at a global conference in Hobart. It seems that Australians can’t get enough of cosmetic surgery treatments, as we are now splurging about $1 billion alone, with this figure expected to grow with the continuing popularity of cosmetic surgery. The primary clientele for the surgeries includes the baby boomer generation, who are willing to do what it takes to reverse the ageing process, according to the Australian College of Cosmetic Surgeons, Dr Russell Knudsen.
Dr Knudsen believes that “they’re affluent, they’re educated and they’re living
longer than ever”
The most popular surgeries include breast augmentation and liposuctions, but Dr Knudsen is saying that it’s the non-surgical treatments that can be performed in a lunch hour are really flourishing. “Less invasive techniques have taken an increasingly prominent role in managing cosmetic surgical outcomes. In fact, there’s an enormous amount of work being done now in the face using fillers which used to be performed as surgical techniques,” he said. A customer undergoing a Fraxel treatment on her face is baby boomer Helen Brown. 36
The transport worker was keen on this treatment for the fact that it’s a non-surgical procedure that involves laser resurfacing, which also comes with the benefit of having a shorter recovery time, one of the main attractions for Ms Brown.
“I’ve got a pretty high up job and I like to keep as young as I can. I’m on the go all the time and it’s important for me not to look my age to keep up with everyone else in
the industry”
“Obviously it’s a little bit more painful than the hairdresser, but it’s quick and there’s hardly any down time. It just feels a bit like sunburn.” Meanwhile, new mother Emma Walters is also about to complete laser surgery to reduce skin discolouration on her face. “During any big hormonal fluctuations, like during pregnancy, I get the big brown patches on my skin. I’m quite lucky it’s just sort of on my cheeks but some ladies get it all over their faces. But, I’m really looking forward to getting rid of it. Ms Walters is an example that it’s not all about turning back time; cosmetic surgery has a variety of different purposes, all for different people.

The Vocational Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Nursing is a governmentaccredited course, which provides Nurses with the knowledge and hands-on skills to work within a cosmetic medical practice performing cosmetic nursing, dermal therapies and injectables procedures. The qualification is delivered through the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science (AACDS), which have been delivering education in the field of cosmetic medicine since 2004. The college and its qualifications have gained significant recognition from the key societies/organisations in cosmetic medicine. AACDS Medical Director, Dr Jayson Oates reports, “Although Nurses have the foundation skills as a health care

Postgraduate and Continuing Education Scholarships available to Aged care nurses Aged care nurses now have the opportunity to apply for one of the 130 scholarships for a postgraduate or continuing education within their field, on offer by the Federal Government. The Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, announced that this new round of scholarships will allow aged care nurses and health professionals to develop the critical skills required, which will include professional development to the value of $30,000 Mr Butler stated that “Eligible study areas include clinical gerontology, behavioural management, dementia care, wound care, continence care, palliative care, infection control and leadership and management. Registered nurses can apply for scholarships of up to $15,000 a year for two years for postgraduate studies. Enrolled and registered nurses may receive continuing education scholarships of up to $3,000 to attend conferences, $5,000 for short courses or workshops and up to $6,000 over two years for re-entry courses.”
These scholarships became available through the Australian Government’s $232 million ‘Supporting Professional Aged Care Workforce Program’. “These scholarships encourage aged care nurses to extend their skills so they can improve the clinical care they provide, or to further their career paths in aged care. Having access to further training and career advancement makes aged care a better career option and makes it easier to attract and keep quality staff, which in turn means better care for our increasing population of older Australians,” Mr Butler stated. Mr Butler also added that a crucial element of the Gillard Government’s farreaching reforms to the health system was to actually support the health and aged care workforce. “Last month, all states and territories agreed to join the national reform partnership. These reforms will build on our current strengths and reshape the system to better meet the needs of patients and health care in the 21st century.”
