Notre Dame’s Exercise Physiology students provided health and physical rehabilitation to community groups in Cambodia as part of a significant practical experience.

The University of Notre Dame Australia Cambodian experience provides invaluable learning opportunities Providing health and physical rehabilitation to community groups in Cambodia was a remarkable opportunity for Exercise Physiology students at The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus as they gained significant practical experience as part of their course of study.

Students studying in the School of Health Sciences offered their skills and expertise to community groups including the Angkor Association for the Disabled, the Cambodian Diabetes Association and the Physical Rehabilitation Centre, and to more than 200 children at Choun Loung Primary School.

At these centres, students provided landmine amputees, 6

Polio victims, children with Cerebral Palsy, club foot and other congenital limb defects, and Type 2 diabetes patients with exercise prescription and additional support required for successful rehabilitation.

Exercise Physiology lecturer at Notre Dame’s Fremantle Campus, Tanya Blee, said students had daily hands-on experience through exercise assessment and individual exercise rehabilitation in all centres, as well as the opportunity to train up a person at each centre to continue applying their work.

“To gain accreditation in Exercise Physiology the students need to be exposed to and gain experience in a number of different pathologies such as cardiac, metabolic,

respiratory and neurological conditions,” Ms Blee said.

“Cambodia is a fragile country slowly repairing itself after many years of war. Land mines are still being cleared and, consequently, there are still a large number of explosion victims and the country’s health care system is either nonexistent or extremely expensive.

“Volunteering our services to those less fortunate whilst practising our skills, experiencing a new culture and making a positive difference in someone’s life is an invaluable and amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Graduate Diploma of Exercise Science student, Ryan Gaias, said the highlight of the Cambodia immersion was working with people who appreciated his time and knowledge.

“My overall experience was amazing – a good mix of learning, self-development and pleasure. It is the best practicum placement I have done and could possibly do,” Mr Gaias said.

“One of the main things I took from the trip to Cambodia was that we generally live above our means as part of a Western society. It made me appreciate the life I have in Australia, although at the same time, feeling like I could be living ‘simpler’ – slowing down, absorbing more information and enjoying life’s experiences on a greater level.”

Ms Blee hopes to offer this one-of-a-kind practical opportunity to Health Sciences students each year.

“Working with these types of patients is within our scope of practice as Exercise Physiologists. Given that these patients had very little or no exercise rehabilitation, it highlights how effective exercise rehabilitation can be,” Ms Blee said.

“This experience has helped the students grow in so many ways. They have grown professionally in terms of their ability to think logically and adapt to situations where they have little or no equipment or facilities.

“Each student has also grown personally, knowing that they have made such a positive difference in so many people’s lives. Above all, they have learnt empathy, patience, humility and gratitude.”

Her teams are supported by the organisations’ network of approximately 130 employees, with an estimated 70 people providing front line, primary health care service.

Salaries are also a factor in the shortage of candidate supply. While various other sectors across Australia use salary to attract staff, public sector employers are unable to do so. The exception has been for experienced Clinical/ Facility Managers and Directors of Nursing, where salaries have increased marginally across the metropolitan areas and higher in rural areas to attract quality candidates.

Another challenge comes from an internal battle for staff within the sector itself. Private healthcare providers are starting to increase the salaries they offer and consequently are attracting top talent away from the public arena where salary is tied to awards. We expect the headhunting of government-employed aged care professionals to continue until wage parity is achieved.

According to the 2013 Hays Salary Guide, a Registered Nurse (Division 1) typically earns between $50,00085,000 in Sydney, Canberra and Perth, $56,000-74,000 in Darwin, $60,000-85,000 in Melbourne, $55,00075,000 in Brisbane and $49,000-65,000 in Hobart ¹.

A RN Nurse-in-Charge typically earns $60,000-90,000 in Sydney, Canberra and Perth, $77,000-95,000 in Darwin, $70,000-90,000 in Melbourne and Brisbane and $55,000-75,000 in Hobart.

A Clinical Care Coordinator typically earns between $70,000-95,000 in Sydney, Canberra and Perth, $95,000-100,000 in Darwin, $85,000-95,000 in Melbourne, $76,000-85,000 in Brisbane and $65,00080,000 in Hobart.

Meanwhile, a Care Manager/DDON typically earns between $75,000-110,000 in Sydney, Canberra and Perth, $110,000-125,000 in Darwin, $95,000-110,000 in Melbourne, $93,000-100,000 in Brisbane and $85,000-95,000 in Hobart.

While the local registration process required to bring in overseas medical professionals is difficult to navigate, it is helping alleviate the domestic shortage of skills in the aged care sector. We expect this trend of recruiting from overseas to continue.

NAHRLS was established by the Australian Government to support nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in rural and remote Australia to take leave from their work for up to 14 days. The service is focused on supporting health professionals by administering an uncomplicated start-to-finish locum placement service with no fees or charges.

NAHRLS was established by the Commonwealth Government to support rural and remote health services by providing locum support at a subsidised cost. The objective of the subsidised program is to help alleviate the pressures of staff shortages due to short term leave requests.
