We detected several problems in Gierstädt as well as also several potentials. Gierstädt is connected with its agriculture but there is a certain lack of attractiveness in the city. We also perceived a lack of public space which did not allow people to come together to interact. The difference in scale at the entrances to the city is also a problem caused by the fields. In addition, we face a lack of means of transport other than the car which is also too present and dangerous given its proximity to the pedestrian. Eight objectives shape the future vision of Gierstädt that can also apply to the greater Fahner Höhe region in the Gotha district. The first four have a physical nature that apply directly to our design schemes. We sought to promote attractiveness to make the areas more friendly and accessible. The city can become more accessible with reaffirmed public spaces, plus more physical connections, laying groundwork for the region. Our objective of a balanced scale promotes cooperation of the industrial and residential

areas in the context of Gierstädt’s agriculture fruit businesses. Our other four objectives apply to the social programs, such as how we could engage industry so that residents and visitors have insight to the lifeblood of the city. Cultural tourism focuses on the visitors to the area, from nearby and far away. Objectives for sustainability place with identity both regard the longevity of Gierstädt, to give the city and the region a place in the rapidly changing world.

We have thought of several possible urban and landscape arrangements to ensure this safety, offer new forms of mobility while having an attractive aspect that will lead locals, tourists, etc. to the various other programs in the city. These programs describe the response to the problems faced in the city combined with the objectives to combat them.

With these 8 programmed objectives we developed 5 distinct programs that incorporate our visions of Gierstädt. Safety and Mobility relates to transformation of more accessible and connected roads and paths from Gierstädt within itself and to other areas. Our greenhouse program is a novel proposition for a year round agrobusiness development at the connection of the self picking fruit orchards and green classroom. The public square is an additive program at the existing welcoming point of the city, with

a focus on pedestrian space and a new bus stop. the community street program ties together the residential and industrial areas allowing for flow and connection between a previously divided city. Finally, the Fahner Höhe access point is the connection to the forest and provides a place of rest and infrastructure for future planning.

TARGET GROUPS

INNER COUNTRY TOURISTS

FAMILIES / CHILDREN

CULTURAL TOURISTS

HIKING-ACTIVE ORIENTED TOURISTS

CYCLING ORIENTED TOURISTS

We focused the visions for each program on four related target groups. They were families, children, cultural tourists, hiking-active oriented tourists and cycling tourists.

The idea of our first program which we called “Safety and Mobility” is to connect Gierstädt to the Fahner Höhe area. Our goal is to promote the attractiveness of the city, while allowing new methods of mobility and ensuring pedestrian safety.

PRESENTATION JUNE 3RD - ALICE IRIZARRY, NURSULTAN TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, HILDEGARDE ALLAIN - NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA

On the existing axes between the towns of Fahner Höhe, we are adding a cycle path, which allows locals, tourists, etc. to go from one town to another, to visit, without necessarily using the car. Also, on the main roads inside the cities that you see in red, we add a pedestrian part. This pedestrian path in Gierstädt is punctuated by several of the other projects we have worked on and which locals, tourists and anyone taking this path can access.

Several sections possible for safety and mobility ALICE IRIZARRY, NURSULTAN TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, HILDEGARDE ALLAIN - NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA

We thought of several possible urban and landscape arrangements to ensure this safety, offer new forms of mobility while having an attractive aspect that will lead locals, tourists, etc. to the various other programs in the city.

The community street program seeks to engage with and balance the scale between industry and residential lands and it becomes a place with identity for the city in a publicly attractive way.

The transformation occurs along the southern edge of the existing road, where there is a gap of public land that we see becoming part of the city’s resources. The land is now part of the resident’s gardens, and in our vision this strip is an opportunity for new developments of community gardens or continuations of property into publicly accessible spaces shared between neighbors.

We see the program working to divest movement solely from East and West, and engaging with North and South movement for the industrial land and the residential plots to mix. Someone walking to work, walking through the city, just visiting, has a chance to stop and experience these gardens.

There is diversity in the spaces of the thin plots, some are 5 meters wide and some up to 10 meters. In these visions we see different opportunities for what can be developed by the residents of Gierstädt.

Community Street Vision - SMALL

ALICE IRIZARRY, NURSULTAN TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, HILDEGARDE ALLAIN - NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA

Here is the small version where there is not as much space to modify, and for example might hold only planters.

Community Street Vision - MEDIUM

ALICE IRIZARRY, NURSULTAN TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, HILDEGARDE ALLAIN - NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA

In a more medium-sized plot the space is wider, with enough space for a wooden pergola that could provide space for hanging plants and shade.

Community Street Vision - LARGE

ALICE IRIZARRY, NURSULTAN TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, HILDEGARDE ALLAIN - NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA

In larger plots, there is enough space for the possibility of adding an entire building. This would work in the future to change the orientation of the plots to face the industry on the North side and keep more garden space facing the South.

Vision 2: Tourism Infrastructure

Vision 1: Tourism Infrastructure

We have also thought about other potential tourist infrastructures linked to this community garden, in particular for visitors without permanent residence.

Vision 2 - Bicycle parking for cyclists participating in the cycling program in Fahner Höhe ALICE IRIZARRY, NURSULTAN TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, HILDEGARDE ALLAIN - NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA

In this existing parking space, we give the possibility to cyclists to park their bicycles, which encourages the use of this new means of transport, to use the car less, to participate in bicycle tourism programs, and also allows a better accessibility, particularly to the community street.

The greenhouse program can cover four of our objectives, sustainability, balanced scale, engaging industry and cultural tourism. In sustainability we see the independent agro-economy action possible, which can support the local economy. Moreover, the greenhouse system can be used throughout the whole year without issues with seasons like winter or any cold summer-spring seasons. For balanced scale and through engaging industry, we consider it as making agro-area more complete, by letting the

fruit companies foster personal relationships with the families in the city. Finally with cultural tourism we feel that the program can support existing local tourism with annual events like the fruit festival.

In that plan you can see clearly how the greenhouses can be settled, around the Observation tower, we used empty spaces for them.

In the slide, we can see how it can look, from perspective of the view towards new greenhouses, on the plan on right side, we see the parking lot for coming tourists for any reasons like the fruit festival. So the city will not be used as a parking lot, but be multipurpose.

Here we have perspective view of greenhouses around the observation tower. And this is a closer look to greenhouses, on plan it is clear that we make it as not a huge program, by surrounding and locating in a small empty area. Moreover, observation tower, already exist as part of tourism, so during the festival they can use it, by pushing agro-tourism and spreading accessible industry to surrounding areas.

We worked on a new public square whose objective is to generate a sense of community, encourage people to gather and thereby promote the attractiveness of the city. It is also connected to the community street, safety and mobility parts of the program which locals and tourists can access by passing through this new place.

Visions of Gierstädt with Resilient Identity for a Connected Fahner Höhe Area ― Alice IRIZARRY, Nursultan TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, Hildegarde ALLAIN NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA ― Bauhaus Summaery 2021

This public square acts as a new central point in the city. It is located at the intersection of the main road, the residential southern part of Gierstädt and the industrial northern part. By placing it in this place which is visible from several axes, we would like to rescale the outskirts of the city which are quite disproportionated.

Perspective of the rest area on the new public square ALICE IRIZARRY, NURSULTAN TYNCHTYKBEK UULU, HILDEGARDE ALLAIN - NEW APPROACHES FOR A SMARTER AND HEALTHIER THURINGIA

We have created a completely pedestrian area, where the pedestrian can feel comfortable chatting without necessarily looking around, going to eat in the rest area in front of the hotel which could take place.

And then to encourage and improve flows, mobility and make this place a central point, we thought of a bus station to welcome tourists, locals, etc. and which includes a kiosk, toilets, and sitting area.

And so we redesigned the path of the bus entering the pedestrian area rather than keeping the existing road. The priority is now the pedestrian, and no longer the car.

The objectives such as safety and mobility, cultural tourism, promoting attractiveness and place with identity, are addressed by applying program of Fahner Höhe access point. In physical connection we connect the whole area with a Gierstädt, as you can see in the plan, bonding the the industrial and residential borders at the edge of the community street program.

For cultural tourism, we plan for people who are visitors to the area, which involves planning tourism infrastructure like a resting area and information boards. For place with identity, we see the improvement of the area which attracts tourists, moreover it gives a sense of purpose to the area.

Fahner Höhe access point is located at the end of the existing road from the community street, connecting to the rest of the city. The access point has two main features located on this path, and they are resources for the residents and visitors of the city. One spot has a rest area next to the beginning of the hiking trails in the Fahner Höhe forest.

Here we have vision sketch for tourism infrastructure facilities at the rest area. It is an example which is a welcoming and preparing place for tourists for their activity, such as information boards where tourists can see the routes and plan their trip. This program is at the end of the forest and the city, and continues the circle of connection in the region.

In conclusion these five programs, promoting our eight developed objectives, work together to provide small changes to the city that work to change its future. Each program is a condition of the city’s small size, meaning it has opportunity to be adapted to other cities in the region.
