2013 CAADRIA PROCEEDINGS 2013 - OPEN SYSTEMS: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 18TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER-AIDED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN RESEARCH IN ASIA Editors: Rudi Stouffs, Patrick Janssen, Stanislav Roudavski, And Bige Tunçer Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-988-19026-4-1 Contemporary challenges require inclusively integrated approaches to designing. Constrained by established modes of practice, such integration is impossible without a radical commitment to openness. In response to this need, the 18th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2013) brought together contributions that engage with open systems in all aspects of architectural and urban design: open with respect to the scale of the design objectives and the context, from a building component within a building system to a neighbourhood or city within its urban and rural context; open with respect to the domains being considered, from planning to sustainable performance of a building or city; open with respect to the collaboration of disciplines and participants, from adhoc brainstorming to a rigorous process of consultation and feedback; open with respect to design methods and techniques, from physical modelling to digital prototyping; open with respect to design models and representations being adopted, from a parametric exploration to an ontological delineation considering Building Information Modelling, Built Environment Modelling or City Information Modelling; open with respect to the tools and applications being adopted, despite interoperability issues, from modelling to simulation and assessment; open with respect to the learning approach being adopted, from informal interaction and sharing to formal design education; open with respect to the open source approach being adopted in research and development, in order to gather community involvement and use. The conference was held 15-18 May 2013 at the Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment, at National University of Singapore.By focusing on the theme of Open Systems, CAADRIA 2013 aimed to explore all these aspects and more, and raise awareness to the need of breaching disciplinary boundaries and reaching creative communities at all levels of expertise, by pooling resources, knowledge and practices, and integrating them through the adoption of open systems.

2013 HOME + BOUND: NARRATIVES OF DOMESTICITY IN SINGAPORE AND BEYOND Authors: Lilian Chee, Dawn Xin Yi Lim, Kenneth Qibao Koh, Hui Lian Lee, Jolene Wen Hui Lee, Melany Sun-Min Park and Mien Huei Yong Editors: Lilian Chee and Melany Sun-Min Park Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-07-4122-8 LIST PRICE SGD$25 HOME + BOUND: Narratives of Domesticity in Singapore and Beyond is the latest and inaugural volume in the Architectural Research Monograph series published by the Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture, National University of Singapore in January 2013. The essays engage with the notion of domesticity set within the geographical bounds of Southeast Asia — more specifically, Singapore and Malaysia. Theoretical frameworks, including those of Michel Foucault, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Derrida and Anthony Vidler, are surveyed against local sites interwoven with varying scales, tropes, (mis)conceptions and antinomies of domesticity: a Chinese cemetery, Singapore’s public Housing Development Board flats, the older Singapore Improvement Trust flats, its National Day Parade sites, a haunted house, a rural kampong (village), some national monuments, and a Straits Chinese patriarch’s mansion in Penang. What does it mean to be ‘at home’ in a context where land and space are both limited and contentious? The ideals of stability attached to conceptions of ‘being at home’ were retrogressive and antithetical to being ‘modern’ — a fixation in Singapore and Southeast Asia’s post-war milieux which continues to thrive under presuppositions of change and subsequent adaptations. The authors thus collectively front home as a destabilised ideology and a constantly evolving physical construct. This volume does not privilege the distinction between loss and recuperation of domestic sites and ideologies, or the ensuing difficulties of their reconciliation. Rather, it highlights the inseparable conditions between the recovery of domestic ideals and the agents who formulate such ideals. Please add US$15 for Surface Postage for Overseas Orders. 2011 HISTORIC MALACCA POST CARDS Editor : Wong Yunn Chii Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-11-0094-9 List Price: US$25/SG$30 Old photographs tell many private and secret stories. Old photographs in the form of picture postcards, in particular, are a public exposition of things, people, sights seen by travellers along the way, that momentarily captured their private attention. This is an exhibition of more than hundred postcard views of Malacca between 1900 -1950 seen through the eyes of colonial travellers. Organized along four broad topographical themes: Sea, Life of Town, Country-Side and Town Center—most, if not all are of sights, places and practices that have since changed or have disappeared altogether. What was seen and experienced? What was represented? What was valued? There is no nostalgic value in re-visiting these visual records, for those “old Malacca(s)” have surely passed. Rather, its value is to encourage us to reconnect to and to critically reflect upon the qualities of these past(s) that made Malacca unique in the eyes of the early travellers. And then, perhaps ask: “How pertinent are these qualities today?” and “What have we gained and lost through time?” Only then, can the past authentically mean anything at all to us. 2018 MANAGING CHANGE Editors: Johannes Widodo and Nikhil Joshi Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 3-7688-11-981-978 List Price: US$34/SGD$45 Part 1 of this volume consists of five chapters that examine broader issues of conservation principles and approaches in historic cities of Asia. The contributions discuss various perspectives ranging from critiques of current conservation policies regarding local heritage conservation to recent trends of rapid and unplanned development of historic quarters in Asian cities. The case studies in Part 2 of this volume contextualise current debates on the role of community engagement to conserve historic urban quarters and examine diverse contexts across Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Philippines. All five chapters are about real-world projects where the authors were actively involved in various roles – as facilitators, professional advisers, community leaders and coordinators, and activists. While some chapters present critical review and commentary; others provide lived experience of working with communities in preserving their local heritage. It is often seen that participatory community approaches employed by concerned authorities for heritage conservation projects based on recommendations by experts do not always aid local communities due to lack of heritage awareness and limited application of community engagement exercises. Hence, in most heritage development projects, there remains a significant divide between the authorities responsible for policy planning and the actual users of the heritage. Why does local heritage matter to communities? The contributions explored the fundamental reasons for this question and argued that heritage mean more than just mere identity, continuity and accumulated layers of memories. The heritage is also a tool for the community coming together as one and its revitalisation, economic growth, and sustainability. The notion of heritage is not mainly about the past instead it matters to the people of the present and how they anticipate their future. It is inevitable for historic Asian cities to evolve. Moreover, for their sustainable development, it is pivotal to keep a balance between development and heritage conservation. Please ADD US$15 for Surface Postage for Overseas Orders. 2016 PEOPLE+PLACES: EXPLORING THE LIVING HERITAGE OF SONGKHLA OLD TOWN Editors: Johannes Widodo, Nikhil Joshi, et al. Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-11-0727-6 List Price: US$20/SGD$25 People + places: Exploring the living heritage of Songkhla old town, edited by Johannes Widodo, Nikhil Joshi, et al. The ‘living’ heritage is closely associated with a community. To manage this dynamic heritage, it is not only necessary to look beyond the established heritage frameworks developed by experts, but also to empower communities so that they can maintain and even enhance their ‘own’ heritage. The innovative process of community mapping is one such way that makes peoples’ culture more apparent for it to be maintained and even further developed. The living heritage maintains the continuity of community connections; hence, it should continue to evolve in the form of tangible and intangible cultural expressions of a community to remain meaningful for the present and future generations. “People + places” is a fully illustrated book that offers participatory ways in the form of community mapping for exploring the relationship between the people and places of the Songkhla Old Town. This book analyses and summarises the social, cultural and economic assets directly related to of the old town as identified with the assistance of the locals. “People + places” also contains a detailed metric survey of two historic buildings in Songkhla old town – Railway station and a historic shophouse to raise public awareness and appreciation of Songkhla’s rich and varied built heritage. “People + places” is an essential book for community architects and architects, city planners, urban designers, heritage groups, and anyone else concerned with public engagement in cultural heritage management. SG3 – DECODING SUSTAINABLE URBANISM , CASE STUDY, SINGAPORE Authors: Nirmal Kishnani and Asma Khawatmi Editors: Deepshi Bhogal and Mayank Kaushal Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-09-9078-7 List Price: SG$25 (Also available at Basheer Graphic Books) There is growing consensus that sustainability, as an imperative, compels us to rethink what we design. How this in turn affects process and approach, the question of how we design, remains unclear. This is true in education as it is in practice. Educators struggle to reconcile the dissonance between conventions of pedagogy and emerging tools and metrics of sustainability; practitioners fall back on industry checklists for green building certification. It does not help that ‘sustainability’ is hard to pin down. The people-profit-planet principle-useful as classroom rhetoric – sheds no light on process. We are left with elemental knowledge, without tactical knowhow. This book presents the work of students and their teachers across three studios of the Master of Science, Integrated Sustainable Design (MSc ISD) programme at the School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. The pages ahead are organised according to the stages of the studio process, prefaced by a discussion on why Dr. Nirmal Kishnani – who taught all three studios – offers an educator’s perspective, asking what the outcome says about the teaching of sustainable design. Asma Khawatmi – who co-taught the first studio, and helped frame a direction that was applied to all three – examines when and how principles known to urban designers in practice are adapted to emerging imperatives of sustainability. Deepshi Bhogal and Mayank Kaushal were both students of the programme, and are now successful practitioners in Singapore with a deep interest in sustainability. In the epilogue, they reflect on how their time in the studio shaped later decisions at the practitioner’s drawing board. Please ADD US$15 for Surface Postage for Overseas Orders. Rapid technological, economic, social and cultural changes are transforming the idea of “Asian space.” With the shift to a global economy and an urban population explosion, Asian cities have become a mainstay of progress, national pride, identity, and positioning on the global stage. The extraordinary pace and intensity of the changes have created a situation unique in the history of urban development. Despite the immense diversity of Asian countries, “Asia-ness” is often treated as a distinctive quality that has emerged from unique recent circumstances affecting Asian urbanizations as a whole. In Future Asian Space, 15 authors explore broad concepts relating to the creation and re-creation of “Asian space” and contemporary Asian identity, and their examination of different sites and research approaches highlights the difficulty of pinpointing what Asia-ness is, or might become. Appropriate design and planning of cities is a critical element in building a sustainable future and coping with environmental, social and cultural problems. Future Asian Space is designed to stimulate interests and engagement in discussions of the Asian city, and its trajectories in architecture and urbanism, but the authors’ conclusions will intrigue anyone interested in the future of cities and urban life in Asia. 2011 FÈS REBORN: PROJECT ON AN ANCIENT CITY Editor: Florian Schaetz et al. Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-08-8797-1 Fes is magnificent. Fes is conservation. Fes is reborn. Massive walls shimmer golden in the evening light. We enter a maze of narrow sand-colored alleys with an aura of spices, chorus of prayers and hidden mysteries. Founded in the 9th century, the Medina of Fes was the capital of Morocco and it is still considered by many to be the intellectual and cultural heart of the kingdom. As a car-free living museum with immense architectural and historic treasures, the city is faced with deterioration and abandonment. Will conservation enhance a cultural dialogue and foster socioeconomic cohesion towards a sustainable redevelopment? Fes Reborn is an architectural journey that reflects upon one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Islamic World. Studies, essays and interviews are presented with analytical graphics, data, drawings and photo journals. The complexity of a medieval urban form and its relevance in the modern world is unraveled. This book offers designers, researchers and travelers an insight into conservation, tourism, art and the community of Fes. Selected design proposals create a dialogue between cultural authenticity, craftsmanship and sustainable technologies. Following conservation guidelines, these projects offer provocative new ideas for a careful revitalization and rehabilitation of the Medina.

2011 SPECULATIONS Editor: Bobby Wong Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-08-9457-3 Speculations is a chronicle of design projects done by 13 NUS Department of Architecture Year 4 students over the course of Semester 2 2010/2011, under the instruction of A/P Bobby Wong. The projects reflect a two-pronged (macro and micro) investigation. The macro response comprises of masterplans, involving the projection of societal and contextual conditions upon which architecture is contingent. On the micro level, students elaborate on these reactions into individual projects, detailed with technical imagination, addressing sociopolitical premises and realism. The intention is to transcend beyond the mere search for expression, to confront directly items and concepts upon which this language is conceived.

2010 MEETING IN MALACCA. AN EXPERIENTIAL GUIDEBOOK Editor: Johannes Widodo Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-08-6014-1 List Price: SG$15 Up close, Malacca is, for all intent and purposes, a visually legible town. We can obtain a cursory understanding of its many beginnings through discernible traces: natural and man-made, old and recent. Such as its shophouse precincts, narrow streets, town square, hills and a river. Also visible are clear and imminent forces dangerously transforming these legacies faster than any efforts to fully understand them. The sources of these threats are several folds, among these – the gradual emptying of the town’s population for the sprawling terrace-housing estates, the depletion and attrition of the town’s old urban building stocks, and careless conservation processes. Our architecture year 1 students’ Malacca field trip and workshop studies are underpinned by the above urgencies. With NUS’ Tun Tan Cheng Lock Center for Asian Architectural and Urban Heritage (@ 54-56 Heeren Street) providing the staging platform for the learning process, the students venture out on their day’s search. And their findings are recorded in this book. Please ADD US$15 for Surface Postage for Overseas Orders. To purchase, please email akisec@nus.edu.sg with the NAME and TITLE of the publication.

2009 WATER MARGINS: 01 Editor: Hee Limin, Low Boon Liang, Heng Chye Kiang, Ooi Giok Ling, Erwing Viray and Han Meyer Publisher: Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA), Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore ISSN: 978-981-08-2694-9 List Price: US$53/S$75 Local waterfronts have acquired increasing relevance to the economic development of cities, and in turn afforded themselves as key nodes in globalization processes and tourism development. A crucial aspect of the competitive repositioning of Asian cities in the global arena is the capacity of post-industrial waterfronts for urban and environmental regeneration. As these cities shift from industrial to service economies, the quality of their urban spaces become increasingly important. The visibility of waterfront areas and its access to other parts of the city become assets to the redevelopment of these places. As such, waterfront developments have attracted the attention of different bodies interested in varying aspects of such development. The book discusses the driving forces and the resulting urban transformation of the urban waterfront spaces of selected Asian cities, within their economic, political, social and cultural milieu. Changes in public-policy governing land-use on the waterfront have allowed for the new spatial configurations, including the changing roles of actors and agencies in the transformations of waterfronts. Another focus would be the nature of public involvement and resultant benefit from these development and changes. The overall changing spatial relationship of the waterfront with the city is the main emphasis of the study. New spatialities generated by the redevelopment of the waterfronts have the potential to create new meanings for the urban spaces of the city. The book covers the findings of the research that compares waterfront developments in Yokohama (MM21), Seoul (Han River) and Singapore (Marina Bay and Singapore River) and situates these within the milieu of global urban waterfront transformations.
