Constructing an Urban Tarzan

When 25-year-old Ryan Quah was studying for a Diploma in Sustainable Urban Design and Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he aspired to be an architect to improve the physical building environment and people's quality of life.

With a design concept that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical, and encourages coexistence with nature, NUS Master of Architecture student Ryan Quah Kun Hao was awarded the Gold Award in the Architecture Category of the 2022 Nippon Paint Asia Young Designer Awards.

The 25-year-old Ryan Quah has been curious about architectural design and the stories behind it since he was a child. While studying for the Diploma in Sustainable Urban Design and Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he aspired to become an architect and improve the physical built environment to enhance people's quality of life.

This aspiration led him to enroll in the Architecture program at the National University of Singapore. Ryan has completed his undergraduate studies and is currently pursuing his Master's degree, set to graduate next year.

Since starting his architectural education, he has received commendations and awards for his design projects. Last year, he participated in the Nippon Paint Asia Young Designer Awards and was awarded the Gold Prize in the Architecture category for his design project titled "Urban Tarzan." The results were announced in February this year.

Ryan Quah, a Master student in Architecture at the National University of Singapore, proposed to integrate steel, timber with flowers and plants through the concept of architectural design, encouraging people to establish a harmonious relationship wit h nature. The competition theme was "Converge: Pushing the Reset Button," encouraging participants to conceptualize how design works could help people better cope with life after the COVID -19 pandemic.

Recalling the period during the pandemic, Ryan noticed that many people sought solace in nature and outdoor. He decided to integrate the lush park landscape from the ground level into a tower design, creating a vertical green space.

According to his concept, the typology of tower design could be constructed in left-over ground spaces and be replicated at different locations, making it suitable for land -scarce Singapore.

"In the age of climate change and land scarcity, Urban Tarzan provides an alternate solution that brings nature even closer to home. It does not only seek to create additional green spaces, but to develop an ecological and circular system between the users, site, species and climate."

Being an architect is a challenging job, but what attracts him the most is the emphasis on problem -solving and collaboration. "For me, I find great satisfaction in seeking creative and productive solutions to complex problems, and architecture provides the perfect platform for this pursuit."
