Is it possible to automate your home simply with an array an array of of internet internet of of things devices? Trevor Crighton speaks to experts speaks to experts
ome automation H systems may seem costly – but there are a number of costeffective systems on the market that do the basics well. It’s also possible to create something approaching the effect of a home automation system using a set of connected devices. But does that give you bang for your buck?

COST-EFFECTIVE CONNECTED HOME
Mobile in Africa distributes an array of Xiaomi connected products, which can be centralised with its Smart Hub or controlled via its Mi Home app.
Some of the devices that can be connected to almost mimic aspects of a home automation system include the Mi 360° Home Security Camera 2K Pro, the Mi Motion Sensor (which can detect movement and sound an alarm), Mi Wireless Switch (to control household appliances), Mi Smart Air Fryer and Mi Window and Door Sensor.
“Our Mi Smart Hub allows all your connected smart devices to be controlled from a common touchpoint,” says Sashan Lalbiharry, Mobile in Africa e-commerce manager. “The Smart Hub acts as a central location for the management of your smart devices, providing total control of all connected devices.”
Installing fully automated home and security systems can cost you thousands, he says – and in most cases require professionals or very tech-savvy individuals to install and set up. “In many cases your home may need to be fully rewired or require some sort of additional wiring,” says Lalbiharry.

IOT AND AUTOMATION GO HAND IN HAND
Elan Systems sales and product manager Ian le Grange says the company’s systems can communicate with certain internet of things (IoT) devices to form a network of smart devices, in addition to the hi-tech functions offered by the automation system.
“You can connect devices that communicate via Z-Wave to the system – we have lighting control products from Aon Labs that you can connect to lamps and things to allow you to operate them remotely, and others that can be built into an IoT organism that monitors water leaks, senses doors and windows being opened and monitors light and humidity levels,” he says.
That said, Le Grange says a well-designed automation system should disappear into the background and monitor and control all these aspects as an integration.
“IoT devices are a complementary set of components – an extension of the organism – but they still need to integrate seamlessly, otherwise you’re just juggling more applications,” he says.
CHOOSE WISELY
Cinema Architects’ Schalk Burger cautions against unlicensed (uncertified) products, mostly sold via the internet, that don’t necessarily have any level of security and are a big risk in and around your home, creating loopholes for potential hackers.
“Thus, when you are shopping for devices, make sure they have good security features. Some applications (apps) collect data from the way you use them without your knowledge. You can deny them certain permissions if you turn off features, for example, Bluetooth connectivity and location data.”
The biggest advantage of home automation is that it enables devices to interact with each other in your home or remotely over long distances via the internet. “But this can also be used to work against your cybersecurity,” he warns.
To further minimise your risk, it is advisable to de-link redundant or broken devices from the rest of the system before you remove it, he says. This will avoid hackers using it as a backdoor into your system in the future.
You also need to remove all the smart home applications from your old smartphone when you get a new one to avoid a similar situation. If you stay with the major certified brands, you will not be at risk. If you come across an unfamiliar brand, it will be worth your while to look for reviews in reputable publications.
Real home automation doesn’t necessarily mean that when you retrofit a house it needs to be rewired. “There are lots of affordable, well-secured, and licensed wireless products available that can protect your space if it is planned, set up and configured correctly.
“My advice is if you do not have the necessary home automation experience, rather approach a good, qualified systems integrator (CEDIA-accredited) for help instead reality and it of putting yourself at risk. Cybercrime can happen in your home,” he adds. Q is a Cinema Architects
