Letter From The
I want to start off my letter by thanking everybody who took part in our Summer Expo that took place on June 13 at Ruth Eckerd Hall. I was proud of the event, as it was the first expo that NuYou Magazine has ever hosted. My staff did an outstanding job and we all learned a lot! The Margarete Heye Great Room is a beautiful facility and worked out perfect for our event. The fashion shows were huge hits with Zakai and Punk Rock Betty putting on fantastic shows! We had interesting seminars, a decent crowd turnout and all-in-all the event was a success. We have all ready started making plans for our Winter Expo that will take place on Sunday, December 5, 2011 once again at Ruth Eckerd Hall. If you are interested in becoming a vendor or sponsor, please give us a call at 813-814-1505. So far, summer here in Tampa Bay has been hot, hot, hot! As a matter of fact, parts our area set records for the warmest June ever recorded. Hopefully you (and your family) have taken all the precautions needed for fighting the summer elements. Make sure you are well hydrated (drink plenty of water), put on sun block, dress in lightweight clothing and pay attention to your body. If you are outside and you start feeling dizzy, light-headed or sick to your stomach ... do the right thing .... sit down and cool off! The month of July looks to be just as hot, so take care of yourself! Let’s hope our Tampa Bay Rays can start playing baseball the same way they played the first month of the season. At press time, the team has dropped out of first place and trail the New York Yankees by three games. The strange thing is their road record is an outstanding 24-12 but their record at Tropicana Field is a dismal 20-19. This team is loaded with young talent and it would be a shame if they can’t start winning home games. Come on guys just tap your cleats together and repeat after me ... “There’s no place like home ... there’s no place like home!” I hope everybody has a funfilled and safe 4th of July holiday .... Happy Birthday America!

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SURVIVE A TOXIC SUMMER?
CONTAMINATED WINDS & RAIN FROM THE GULF WILL REACH THE ENTIRE GULF COAST Dr. Cass Ingram, author of “Natural Cures for Health Disasters” and “The Miracle of Wild Oregano,” reviews strategies for protecting yourself against chemical toxins in the air, food and water caused by the Gulf oil catastrophe. Whether we live right on the coastline or many miles away, the Gulf oil disaster is going to affect our lives and our health. “When you dump millions of gallons of highly toxic chemical dispersants on millions of gallons of highly toxic crude oil, you produce a toxic soup that evaporates and begins an airborne journey hundreds and even thousands of miles across the continent,” says Dr. Cass Ingram, author of “Natural Cures for Health Disasters”, “The Miracle of Wild Oregano” and more than a dozen other books on the healing and detoxifying properties of wild plants. Dr. Ingram says toxic chemicals traveling inland include volatile organic compounds like benzene, methyl chloride and hydrogen sulfide. Also in the airborne mix are the evaporated gasses from BP’s oil dispersant, Corexit 9500, which has been banned in Europe as a cancer causing agent. “Corexit 9500 is readily absorbed by clouds and released as toxic rain, which then falls on crops, water reservoirs, animals and people, leaving behind carcinogens on everything it touches,” says Dr. Ingram. “Corexit9500 is already causing destruction of plants and crops in some Gulf states.” Dr. Ingram says with hurricane season coming up, there is concern that the winds will carry these deadly chemicals north and spread over much of the United States. Even states not in the direct path of toxic winds or rains from the Gulf could experience health concerns by importing and consuming meats, fruits and vegetables raised in states where Gulf contaminants are likely to settle. Dr. Ingram says common sense recommendations for dealing with toxins emanating from the Gulf include physically removing yourself from contaminated areas, avoiding food grown in contaminated areas, drinking purified water and using indoor air purification systems. If exposed, Dr. Ingram says you can help your body neutralize and eliminate toxins with an array of wild fruits, wild
herbs, wild spices and their extracts as follows: 1. To protect the lungs and respiratory passages: . foods high in tannic acid such as cranberries, red grapes and blueberries . pectin-rich fruit because pectin binds noxious compounds, rendering them non-toxic: apples, pears, tomatoes . vitamin C-rich fruit: citrus, especially lemons, papaya and strawberries; vitamin C binds and detoxifies noxious chemicals and is used up as the result of exposure to toxins . activated charcoal (a supplement) 2. Daily use of medicinal spices and herbs: . wild oregano oil, as sublingual drops . wild oregano juice . wild-source vitamin C (from camu camu and acerola) . total body purging agent made for detoxification containing wild greens, berries and plant oils for purging noxious substances through the liver, intestines and kidneys. (wild berries and greens protect the body from poisons) 3. Daily use of powerful protective and detoxification teas: . chaga tea (a potent growth on birch tree; a tea of this stabilizes the body against toxicity) . wild oregano and/or sage tea . spicy teas: ginger, cloves, cinnamon sticks.

nuYou Legal Eagle LEGAL WRANGLING OVER HEALTH CARE Jeffrey “Jack” Gordon On March 23rd,The Health Care bill became law. President Barak Obama signed the bill in the East Room, before a crowd that included all 219 House members who voted for final passage of the bill. The law expands health insurance coverage for 32 million Americans, in part by preventing insurance companies from denying coverage to people who are sick or have pre-existing conditions. The law provides subsidies for some Americans to purchase insurance. Minutes after Obama spoke, Republican attorneys general from 13 states filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn aspects of the health care law, including the requirement that all Americans buy health insurance or face financial penalties. Since then, the lawsuit has grown, as seven other states, as well as the National Federation of Independent Business (NIFB), have joined in the suit against the healthcare reform bill. This makes a total of 20 states which are opposing the massive reform law, all but one of which are Republican in their leaning: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Washington. The lead plaintiff for the suit is Attorney General Bill McCollum of Florida. The AG’s suit challenges the law’s constitutionality. The primary argument, and the central focus of the debate, will be whether the Commerce Clause of the Constitution grants Congress the power to pass a law which is so broad and sweeping in its scope of intrusion into personal affairs. As the details of the lawsuit emerge, legal experts are split in their opinions as to whether the suit will ever reach Supreme Court, and whether it will succeed or not. Lawyers who are in favor of the new health care law argue that the law is constitutional because the Commerce Clause grants Congress the power to regulate activities which, in their “aggregate” (or accumulated effect) will affect interstate commerce. These experts contend that if people do not obtain coverage, it will inevitably affect the price of health insurance for citizens throughout the U.S, and thus should be covered by the Commerce Clause. Those who are opposed to the law, such as McCollum, will
be arguing that the mandatory insurance clauses of the law Jeffrey “Jack” Gordon is a Board are unconstitutional Certified Civil Trial Lawyer practicing simply because in the areas of Medical Malpractice, what Congress Personal Injury and Wrongful Death. is attempting to He is rated “AV Preeminent” by regulate is not an Martindale-Hubbell. “activity” at all in the He can be reached by e-mail at: legal sense of the Jack@ManeyGordon.com. term, and thus is not in the stream of commerce. In the text of the Florida lawsuit, McCollum and others point out that in effect, people will be subjected to penalty not according to any action they take, but rather for their “inactivity”. This is because the law proposes to mandate additional taxation for businesses and citizens who do not purchase health insurance premiums. The argument is based on the premise that the federal government is overstepping its boundaries by getting into people’s personal freedoms thus having no limits to what they can mandate Americans to do. The National Federation of Independent Business also joined the parade stating that it will directly affect small business that are required to pay for insurance or pay a penalty. The suit represents only one means by which Republicans are still attempting to thwart the massive health care bill. The states are also worried about the extent to which the statute imposes a financial burden on resources and personnel. “It has never been held that the Commerce Clause [of the Constitution] ... can be used to require citizens to buy goods and services,” the suit says. “To depart from that history to permit the national government to require the purchase of goods and services would deprive the Commerce Clause of any effective limits.”.... With that said, the fact still remains that 49 million people in the United States are without basic health care coverage and these figures have been growing each year. Medical costs are the second largest reason for personal bankruptcy, second only to job loss itself and nearly 20,000 of our citizens die each year of conditions that were left untreated due to lack of access to health care. In what is still the world’s wealthiest economy, that is nothing short of criminal.

How to find the right cosmetic procedure by the right professional In this day and age when looking good is so important, there are many cosmetic procedures, products and professionals to choose from. However, making the right choice can be very confusing, the information misleading and the price deceptive.

7 STEPS TO CERTAINTY:
Here are helpful hints to steer you in the right direction: 1. Know what you want! Be clear about what you don’t like. The more specific you are – the easier it is to know what changes can be made because general statements like “I look old”, “I am not happy with my appearance” or “make me look beautiful” are not helpful. Think: skin color, shadow, texture, wrinkles, frown line, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, sagginess, fullness, lack of fullness, too much, too little, cellulite, looseness, curvy. Talk to friends, family or research on the internet to discover what your concerns can be.
2 3
2. Know why you want it! This is perhaps one of the most important realizations that you must have for yourself. To help you understand why you want something, it is helpful to know what it will actually do for you personally. This might include enhancing your self esteem, personal confidence or simply correct something you do not like. In my experience – people that are happier with themselves are also healthier. Making cosmetic changes can be very beneficial to your lifestyle.
4
3. Know how to get it! Often there are various solutions to everyone’s needs. It is important to know that different options provide different results, carry different risks and require different levels of expertise. Unfortunately many centers will not properly educate you about this and only provide limited options. Find the people that will honestly share with you all the information so that you can get what you want at the price you can afford. For example – there are many different ways to shape your body. Find a surgeon that has all the different options at their disposal including: nutritional coaching, radiofrequency technology, endermologie, body shaping tecniques, detox, lymphatic drainage, and surgical expertise by a board certified plastic surgeon to perform, liposuction, ultrasonic liposution, laser lipo (like smart lipo) or the ability to remove loose skin. Centers with limited facilities will not necessarily deliver your best choice. Another example is breast augmentation: some centers will only provide you with one choice or surgical approach. Understand that breast augmentation can be done through the armpit, nipple area, under the breast or the belly button, above the muscle, under the muscle with saline or silicone implants. Know all your choices.

4. Determine who should help you! Proper licensing and experience is critical to help you get the results that you want. With this economy, many people are providing cosmetic or plastic surgery services that do not have the proper credentials and charging ridiculously low prices to lure you in. The cosmetic industry has two standards – qualifications and price. All the best provide quality results and charge the same. If you price shop to get services that change your body – you run the risk of getting a poor result which ultimately disfigures you or costs you more in the end. Do yourself a favor – go to a licensed aesthetician for your facial needs. Go to a board certified plastic surgeon for all your botox, Restylane, Juvederm, laser, liposuction and other plastic surgery needs. There are too many non qualified individuals advertising on bill boards or by other aggressive means, falsely advertising their credentials or pretending to be plastic surgeons, who then perform these services with terrible results that can not be fixed! Go to www.plasticsurgery.org to find out who is qualified
5 6 7
5. Will the person deliver the results! Besides having the right qualifications and training, can they indeed deliver the result that you want? Get references and ask to talk to their patients. 6. Professional integrity Are you comfortable with the professionalism as well as their personality. The right person will treat you the right way – what is your overall experience, what is the staff like, what is the inside of the office like, does it all make sense to you all? These experiences will reflect towards your final result. 7. Intuition Never disregard what the sixth sense tells you and never rush into anything. Don’t make your cosmetic experience into an emergency.

HEALTHY TIPS! Boston University researchers found that adults who used ibuprofen regularly for five years reduced their risk of suffering Alzheimers by 40%. Ibuprofen reduces the brain inflammation that may lead to the condition. There is also research that shows Ibuprofen can combat Parkinson’s disease as well.
When you are doing laundry and have a lot of wrinkleprone garments try this trick ... wash the cloths in warm water and rinse in cold water. Then toss them in the dryer with a clean, dry towel. They will come out crease-free and you won’t need your iron!
Here’s a news flash! A study done by European researchers found that obese women had more trouble finding a sex partner than their normal weight counterparts! Wow ... what a shock! The obese ladies were also found to be four times as likely to have an unplanned pregnancy. Experts also found that fat men have a higher rate of erectile dysfunction. Obese people are also at a higher risk for diabetes, depression and urinary stress incontinence.
Disney and Pixar Movies have created another masterpiece! Toy Story 3 is spectacular! It doesn’t matter how old you are, this movie is funny, exciting and worthy of an Oscar nomination! New characters like “Lotso the big teddy bear” and “Ken the Doll” fit in perfectly with Woody, Buzz and the rest of the toy group. The 3-D effects were fantastic (they even had special kid-size glasses) and even if you don’t have kids .... it’s worth taking the time to see! Here’s a tidbit that I know will make your mouth water .... If you enjoy one square of dark chocolate two or three times a week you can lower your risk of heart disease by 33%. The study was done by the Journal of Nutrition and almost sounds too good to be true!
Here’s a tip you won’t see everyday .... if you want to remove underarm stains on your favorite white shirt dissolve 8 to 10 aspirin in one cup of warm water, then soak the underarm area of the shirt in it. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then launder the shirt as usual. The stain will disappear! According to a poll from the Pew Research Center For The People and The Press/Smithsonian Magazine, 41% of people polled believe that Jesus Christ will return to earth by the year 2050. 71 percent believe that cancer will be cured by 2050 and 68 percent predict a World War by the same date.
The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry says that having one or two cups of green tea every day will almost completely protect your eyes from macular degeneration and glaucoma. Green tea is full of lutein and vitamins C and E. These antioxidants are absorbed by your eye’s lens and retina and help fight the diseases.

A PERMANENT SOLUTION-
FOR MANY QUESTIONS
Clearwater, Florida – Permanent hair removal is one of the fastest growing procedures in the aesthetic world today. The thought of never having to purchase razors again or the promise of gaining an additional twenty minutes in the shower appeals to many people. The problem with these scenarios is the confusion which surrounds the varied prices to the ever evolving information surrounding different providers of hair removal. “Clinics are jumping on permanent hair removal because it is so popular,” says Nancy Neal, Founder and CEO of 1-800-Laser Hair. “Consumers are asking questions faster than they are getting answers. We want to make sure that our clients feel comfortable. We try to provide answers to all questions before they can ask them.” Neal says, “Prices tend to vary between providers for many reasons, including geographic area, amount of hair to be removed, time that goes into the procedure, and which body part you want to have done. We offer payment plans, and we often will offer package discounts.” Another question includes the difference between a “true” laser and an IPL device. While both devices are light based, IPL uses a pulsed light that doesn’t have same the power or precision of a laser. Generally, providers will use an IPL device for multiple services, including photo facials, skin pigmentation, and age spots. Hair removal works best with a more powerful laser. “The best thing to do is give us a call to schedule a complementary consultation”, Neal says. “We love to answer your questions.”
Dear Mariah,
ASK
I really want fuller lips. I love the full look, but have seen people that look ridiculous. How do I find the right doctor and what do I ask for. Please help! Paula
Dear Paula, Pucker up Paula its time to get that look you want! When it comes to fillers I always suggest starting with Restalyne. It lasts the shortest amount of time, if you are unhappy with your look you are not stuck with it for more than 6 months. If you do like the look that you get I suggest moving to a more permanent filler such as Perlane, Artefil, or Radiesse. Fillers will range around 500-1,200 per treatment and will vary as to how much is used to achieve the look you want. If you find that you are in love with the look and do not want the pain and expense of updating your fillers once a year there are also permanent solutions called the eptfe implants.
These are amazing and permanent. These are implants that are placed in the lips or nasal labial folds (laugh lines). They are priced at 12-1500 per implant, so you would be looking at around 3,000. It is made of Gor-tex (technically: expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)) This product is officially called GORE S.A.M. (GORE Subcutaneous Augmentation Material), this soft tissue augmentation implant is manufactured by Gore Advanced Technologies Worldwide. The surgery is done under local anesthesia and normally requires about 3-5 days of soft foods for recovery. As always there are risks, but those should be discussed with your doctor. As for finding the right Doctor ask your friends and co-workers that is a great way to find happy patients and Great Docs. I would always suggest a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and for goodness sake do not go to a station at the mall or in the back of a salon. This is your face please leave it in the hands of the best. Good luck! Mariah Fox Patient Advocate, nuYou Magazine

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR!
by Debi Cianci
How to chill for the long hot summer and still look great…… These are just a couple of tips for the girl that gets a little puffy. Stash your skin care products in the fridge .... this makes all your products feel energizing and refreshing on your face. I store, eye creams, eye pads and some of my more creamer lip sticks in the refrigerator. It feels great on your face! Also stock up on products that contain mint or menthol as they also make your skin feel instantly frosty and tingly. If you put it on your eyes, skin or lips, the feeling will hit you like a blast of A/C! Another “cool down” idea comes from misting your face with a green tea and ice water spray. Make Burt’s Beeswax Lip Balm sure you use a “mister bottle” not a $3.00 regular spray bottle. Using a natural burtsbees.com brewed green tea will help repair sun damage as tea is a good source of antioxidants. During the summer months, make sure you use some type of lip balm. This tip is for everyone … including children. Our lips are very sensitive and need protection. All women carry make IcyBag Insulated Cosmetic Bag up in their purses. Make up starts $17.99 melting down in hot temperatures, www.blind9golf.com so try using an insulated cosmetic bag. They make them in all sizes. Put your coolant case in the freezer it will stay cool up top five hours. Check out www.cool-itcaddy. com. Some heat proof make up is waterproof liners, smudgeproof mascara and waterproof Smash Box Bionic Mascara eye shadows. Try “Smashbox
$19.00
Jet Set” products. For blushes and bronzers use mineral make up. For your lips, always use a lip liner as this will help stop your lips from cracking and bleeding, plus you can make your lips look plumper. Bobbi Brown and Stila Lip Glaze have great looks. Also remember to wear your sunglasses, your eyes need all the protection they can get plus they have some good looking glasses to wear. Now let’s talk about your hair. We spend all kinds of money on color, hi-lites and haircuts. During the summer, we need to protect our hair. I know lots of men and women do not like to wear a hat but it will help so you don’t get so brassy. Also use a color extend sun protectors, shampooconditioner and solor sun screens with SPF12, by Redkin. It really works! This product has UV filters for your scalp and hair. Also Hair Detailers has a product with UV filters and strengthens the hair; you can use this on dry or wet hair. I know we always talk about how to get the frizzies out of our hair by using serums and curling creams, the heavier the hair the softer it looks. Women with straight, flat hair have problems with the humidly too as they can look like drowned rats .… not a pretty site! Make sure to get a product that is body boosting, is a thickening cream but does not weigh your hair down. Most hair salons and stores carry numerous products that fit this description. For women with thin, no body type hair, a textured perm is the way to go. Remember during these long, hot summer days, keep protecting your skin and hair. Enjoy the summer and our beautiful Tampa Bay area. Later, Debi

DRESS TO LOSE... 10 POUNDS THAT IS! Match your separates.
Sport the right jacket.
“Lose” five pounds by matching your pants or skirt, stockings and shoes. You’ll seem 10 pounds lighter if they’re all black! Is the one-color thing too tame for your taste? Slip on a pair of bright shoes to shake things up.
Jackets that are hip-length with tailored lines will look sleek; ones that are too baggy or that pull are figure-flattery disasters. Tapered jackets will always whittle your waist.
Choose shapely skirts.
Remember the number one secret of slim dressing: proportion.
The tailored cut of a pencil skirt (we love that it’s not skintight through the hips) makes all bodies look sleek.
Full, round shapes on top and bottom will make you look… full and round. So always accentuate your smallest part by pairing your more generously cut pieces with a snugger mate. Balance a wide leg pants with a fitted shirt, a miniskirt with a longer top, etc.
Slip on a long cardigan.
Waist-length cardigans tend to shorten your body while long, hip-grazing versions make torsos seem long.
Dress up jeans with heels (& tuck in your shirt).
Pick your prints wisely.
Ever wonder why you see this look again and again on celebs, in ads, in magazines? Because, done right, it makes every woman look longer and leaner. Most flattering: straight-leg or boot-cut jeans that sit on your hips (as opposed to at your waist or below your hipbone) and cover your instep when you’re in heels.
Prints aren’t as slimming as solid colors, but you can make them work for you by playing up their camouflaging features. If you’re bigger on the bottom, try pairing a printed A-line dress with a pair of black tights. The golden rule of prints: The smaller the print, the smaller you look. 1

had fantastic looking clothing that was modeled by exotic male and female models. Mix in twenty-two vendors and you can see the Expo was entertaining and a lot of fun! Here are a few photos of the Expo. If you want to see more photographs and a video recap, go to our website at www. nuyoumagazine.com. I would like to thank the staff at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Dawn Martin, Dino Vegas, John Barone, Lenny Mumbles and Mariah Fox for all their input and help. BATHING SUIT SEASON ‘’Check catalogues such as JC Penney, Sears and Spiegel. Follow the ordering instructions on how to measure yourself for correct sizing. These diagrams will show you where to place the measuring tape. Have someone else measure you to get an accurate measure.” Modeling At Any Age Ro Martinez (Seaside Publishing, Copyright 2008) Warmer months mean more time spent outdoors enjoying the longer days. With higher temperatures we shed layers of clothing. We are fortunate here in Florida because of comfortable conditions most of the year. Other parts of the country can’t say the same. When we think of bathing suit season, we conjure up images of warm summer months. I personally wear a bathing suit from May to September, although the beaches are filled at other times of the year with tourists enjoying an escape from areas that have colder climates. Locals have a need for bathing suits too at other times of the year, such as when they choose to go to the gym or pool, on a cruise, or on vacation in exotic destinations. Some live in their suits doing yard work, jogging, biking and enjoying their favorite outdoor activities. Their suits will have to do double duty as workout gear and swimsuits. The less athletic types may look forward to soaking in their hot tubs at the end of a long day. Regardless of our body type, we all need a properly fitting swimsuit. This does not have to be an impossible task if we know our body type. Instead of giving the standard body types such as apple, pear or hourglass shape, I am providing a different breakdown; the young athletic fit or thin body, mature body, and plus-size body.
By Ro Martinez
Young Fit Body or Thin Body – Those fortunate few who have a very fit physique or are naturally thin can choose to wear almost any type of swimwear. They don’t have to worry about camouflaging figure flaws so they can wear a suit that covers less and shows more of the body they may have worked hard to build. Women can choose a two piece halter, strapless or string bikini and men can wear a Speedo or trunks of their choosing. Mature Body – As we age what happens to our body is something we want to keep under wraps. Fuller hips and thighs, a fuller middle, cellulite or flabby skin makes us want to run from the fitting room and not look back. A good fitting suit and cover-up will give you the confidence to spend the day on the beach. A tankini is a more conservative two piece that covers the midsection. For those with a long torso, it is more comfortable. Choose a conservative bottom or boy shorts for the most coverage. A skirted bottom or sarong are stylish options. For men, loose fitting trunks with a cotton or linen button down shirt are good options. Plus-Size Body – This body type is the most difficult to fit because the larger the size the more difficult it is to be in proportion, so we may get a suit that fits our upper part but not the lower half of your body. This can lead to frustration when looking for a swimsuit. The size clothing we wear can be a guide but we should adjust up or down as needed. Too many people hold on to a number not recognizing that the size may vary by manufacturer or style. A one-piece skirted suit is a good choice because it covers hip and thighs with a flirty skirt, allowing you to go from the grocery store to the beach. The sun dress look comes in a variety of styles such as spaghetti straps, strapless or tank top. Plus-size men can follow the same recommendation as for the mature body. Care – Because it can be so difficult to find a proper fitting swimsuit, you’ll want
to protect your investment once you find a favorite. During the bathing suit season spent on the boat, at the beach, or in the pool, suits take a beating. Make them last by hand washing after each use. Stuffing your wet suit in a bag and leaving it for hours can cause it to mold, stain, or the molded cups (on some women’s suits) to become disfigured. The chlorine or salt water when not properly rinsed out is not good for the life of the suit. Use cold water and a gentle detergent (Woolite is safe on most fabrics), avoid wringing, and hang to dry. The heat from a dryer may cause your suit to lose its shape or damage it so it only lasts one season. Caring for your suit need not be difficult. Here are some easy to follow care instructions from Kay Dean, eHow Contributing Writer (www.ehow.com): 1. Step 1 Check the care label of your bathing suit before laundering. Make sure to find out what type of material the bathing suit is made of; spandex and lycra hold their shape longer, polyester can last under heat a little longer and chlorine-resistant fabrics are safer, the only ones which can tolerate pool water better. Also check to see if your bathing suit has any special care instructions. Certain bathing suits have attached decorations that need to be removed before laundering. 2. Step 2 Hand-wash your bathing suit. Fill the sink with cold water and add a small amount of mild liquid fabric detergent. Never use any other liquid soap on your bathing suit--the chemicals can adversely affect the content or dyes of the fabric. Swish the water with your hand to mix in the detergent. 3. Step 3 Turn the bathing suit inside out. Submerse it in the soapy water allow it to sit for several minutes. Squeeze the material to make sure all of the bathing suit gets soapy water; don’t rub the material together. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and gently squeeze to remove excess water. Do not place the bathing suit in a towel to wring out excess water.

4. Step 4 Dry the bathing suit flat unless the care label indicates it can be drip-dried. Lay it on a large towel or on a mesh drying screen. Replace the towel if it becomes wet. This will prevent mildew. Keep the bathing suit out of sunlight, as that will cause the bathing suit to fade. Allow it to dry for 24 hours in order for the suit to completely regain its shape.
sports are but a few things that require durable water wear. Equally important are its looks, because who wouldn’t like to look their best while walking the beach with that special someone? Having such a versatile bathing suit allows me comfort and freedom during all of my seaside endeavors. “ Derek Perryman
5. Step 5 Fold and put your bathing suit away only when it is completely dry. Don’t wear your bathing suit when it’s still wet; wearing even a damp bathing suit can cause the material to lose its shape.
“It is difficult to find a cute bathing suit that is flattering and that offers the support I need it to. If I do find a suit that is attractive and hides my figure flaws, it is either cheaply made and doesn’t hold up, or it is way too expensive! I’ve also had the problem many times where I find a suit that claims to be my size and when I get it on it is cut way too small and uncomfortable in a few places, but the next size up is way too droopy.” Molly Stiglitz
Following my advice will make finding a proper fitting suit a breeze and a day spent enjoying water related activities seem like a vacation. Flaunt your body or your bathing suit but don’t allow an improper fitting suit or a lack of one to prevent you from enjoying all that Florida has to offer. What some of my models friends are saying about their favorite bathing suit: “Make sure that after you swim you rinse your bathing suit off to help maintain it.” Gianna Borst “When vacationing at a resort I have a different style, but I like to play rough in the pool with the kids and need to make sure when they tug on me that my suit stays put. Sporty styles that function well and provide coverage work for me. Different suits cover different needs.” Kimberle Coy “What do I look for in a bathing suit? Ideally a bathing suit must fit my lifestyle, which can pose quite a challenge. Running, biking and water

Ask...CHEF ALFIE chefalfie@tampabay.rr.com
NuYou is proud to introduce you to Chef Alfie who has been a chef in the Tampa Bay area for numerous years. His monthly column will be interesting, informative and full of cooking ideas, shopping tips, food tid-bits and other culinary advice.
So you want to talk Sausage! I have been asked: “Chef Alfie, can you explain the differences with all the sausages I can buy.” There are literally too many varieties to go through all, but I will tackle some of our favorites. *Sweet or Hot Italian Sausage: Course ground pork flavored with garlic, fennel or anise seed. Hot sausage flavored with red pepper. Must be cooked fully and is awesome on the grill or slowly cooked with onions, garlic, tomatoes and cubanella peppers for “Sausage and Peppers” an Italian tradition. *Andouille Sausage: A smoky, spicy sausage made from pork, garlic and smoked over pecan wood and sugar cane. Traditionally used in Cajun Cooking for dishes like Jambalaya and Gumbo. This sausage is great on the grill, broiled in the oven served with stone ground mustard or served cold with cheese and crackers. *Bratwurst: A traditional German Sausage made from pork and veal seasoned with ginger, nutmeg, coriander or caraway. This is a staple of our friends from the upper Mid-west. Served grilled or sautéed on flat steel. A must at a Green Bay Packer game!!! *Bangers: Claimed by both the Irish and English, this sausage is white in appearance and are made from pork, breadcrumbs and water. Seasoned with sage, ginger, mace or allspice. They “Bang” open during cooking. Boil first and slice lengthwise to limit this “Bang”. Served with mashed

potatoes. *Chorizo: Mexican Chorizo is made from pork, chile peppers, garlic and a variety of seasonings. Used in tacos, burritos, enchiladas and is served for breakfast--Chorizo con huevos (eggs and chorizo) or served for lunch or dinner with refried beans. *Kielbasa: (sausage in Polish) or Polish Smoked Sausage, are the same and there are many different types with many different spice combinations. The ones we find in the markets are usually made from pork, salt, pepper, sugar, garlic and marjoram. Great with mustard, served grilled, broiled, boiled, or cooked slowly with sauerkraut and served on a Kaiser bun. These are just a few of many sausages that are available to us. Salami, bologna, pepperoni and others are all considered sausage. Try them all. They all have their own unique flavors and can be utilized in many dishes from breakfast to dinner. Restaurant Review:
JACKSON STREET BISTRO Jackson Street Bistro is a treat for the hardworking business men and women in downtown Tampa, or visitors to our fabulous Aquarium or Tampa’s Art Museums. Located in the SunTrust Bank building on the corner of Florida Avenue and Jackson Street, the entrance to the building is glamorous with revolving doors and an eccentric centerpiece statue of an explorer in a rainbow array of colors. Upon entering Jackson Street Bistro, one is greeted by restful, toned-down music, pleasant staff and a great view of the surrounding downtown area. With its high vaulted ceilings and all around sophisticated atmosphere it creates a feeling of the high life, yet the food is delectably simple and moderately priced. There is even an outside courtyard to enjoy the temperate Florida weather, or to stage a private gathering. Let’s start with breakfast, which is served from 7:00 to 10:30am. All the basics are served, along with Eggs Benedict and a “Design Your Own Omelet”, homemade muffins and quiche. Offerings of fresh fruit, yogurt, sliced tomatoes, cottage cheese, egg whites or egg beaters & whole grain breads are offered for the health-conscious. Gourmet Barnie’s coffees and China Mist tea selections are brewing. What a way to start the day! My companion & I came for lunch. Specifically, I came for the salad known as the “International”, recommended by my cousin who works at a prestigious law firm downtown. And it lived up to my expectations! The International consists of fresh perfectly made hummus, ricotta cheese, sliced avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, cucumbers, black olives and grilled pita priced at $9.95. Savannah chose the triple decker Classic Club sandwich priced at $8.95, made with turkey, ham, cheddar & swiss, bacon, lettuce & tomatoes. She gobbled it up. We had raspberry iced tea for our beverage which our waitress, Caitlyn, kindly kept refilled. The place was really humming through lunch and there are 2 separate dining rooms, plus that great long counter where you can eat in peace if you’re alone. Catering is available daily & nightly 7 days a week. Online and fax ordering, along with take-out, plus limited area delivery. Other offerings in the salad line make it extremely hard to choose---the Seattle Chef has turkey breast, cheddar, walnuts, raisins, eggs and tomatoes, the Bistro Cobb has grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, feta cheese, tomatoes, sprouts & egg dressed with a mango chardonnay dressing, the Cashew Poppy Chicken salad consists of grilled chicken breast, fresh seasonal fruit & veggies over a mix of greens & tortilla chips, topped with cashews and poppy seed dressing. Of course, the classic Greek salad, Spinach salad, Chicken salad, and House salad with a cup of the soup du jour are on the menu. The sandwiches offered are outstanding and include a Muffalata, Pressed Cuban, BLT, Pastrami, Roast Beef Melt, & Filet of Fish. Then there’s the wraps that are so popular: Roasted Turkey, Grilled Spicy Chicken plus a Veggie Pita. I told you it was hard to decide! And don’t forget the Bistro Burgers: Black Angus Beef, Turkey or Veggie. And the Soups!! Jackson St. Bistro has Daily Specials like Taco Salad (yum!) and Fish Friday, plus Weekly Specials like Salad Nicoise (how continental!), Fried Shrimp Wrap, Brioche Turkey Burger with bacon, brie cheese, fresh spinach & tomatoes. How cool is that? All in all, a divine dining experience and it was JUST LUNCH!

FEATURE RECIPE By Tracy Allen
Simply YUMMY! This recipe came from my newest food idol Jamie Oliver. So easy and pretty darn healthy with all real ingredients. No sauce packets or boxes here! You can use this crumble on a lot of different meats like most any white fish or even pork. You can grill it, bake it or pan fry; I chose baking. Anytime I can bake over fry, I bake. To see more whole ingredient recipes from Jamie go to www.JaimeOliver.com. While you’re there sign the Food Revolution petition to get healthier foods in our schools. Kudos go to Jamie for getting flavored milk banned in the D.C. elementary schools. Florida is also considering removing flavored milk as well. Go Jamie go!

Like Fried Chicken Without the FRIED!
CRUNCHY GARLIC CHICKEN Prep time: 10 mins. Cook Time: 15 mins Serves 2
Pour the crumbs on to a plate, sprinkle the flour on to a second plate. Crack the egg into a small bowl and beat with a fork .
• 2 skinless chicken breast fillets
Lightly score the underside of the chicken breasts and place each piece between plastic wrap. Bash each a few times with the bottom of a pan until the breasts flatten out a bit. This tenderizes the meat.
• 1 clove of garlic • 1 lemon • 6-10 saltine crackers (whole wheat preferred) • 2 tablespoons butter • 4 sprigs of fresh Italian parsley • sea salt • freshly ground black pepper • 3 TBS whole wheat flour • 1 large egg • olive oil (only if pan frying) Directions: Peel the garlic and zest the lemon. Crumble your crackers into the smallest pieces possible (or use a food processor) mix with the butter, garlic, parsley sprigs, lemon zest and a pinch of salt and pepper.
Dip the chicken into the flour until both sides are completely coated, then dip into the egg and finally into the flavored crumbs. Push the crumbs on to the chicken breasts so they stick – you want the meat to be totally coated. If baking, preheat your oven to its highest temperature (475˚), place your chicken on a sheet pan and cook for 15 minutes. If frying, put a frying pan on a medium heat, add a few good lugs of olive oil and cook the chicken breasts for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, until cooked through, golden and crisp.
quick TIP
SWITCH IT UP
If you aren’t using a food processor to combine the crumble mixture, spices and butter then you might need to add a few more crackers. The crumbles will be a bit chunkier and not as fine, but I liked it that way.

CINNAMON AND YOUR HEALTH by Art Koch
Now, I am not a doctor, I don’t play one on TV and I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! But I am someone who is very interested in finding ways to improve my health when it comes to food. Whether it’s through genes or luck, or a combination of both, I have been fortunate to be able to eat most anything and maintain my weight within 10-15 pounds of my normal weight from the time I left the Air Force at age 22 many, many years ago. Still, in my later years I have tried to be more self conscious about carbs, sodium, salt, cholesterol, etc. by eating and cooking better. About a year ago I read an article about a product that intrigued me and decided to give it a try and glad I did. That product was cinnamon! I was amazed about what I found out about this spice and the fact that it’s not just something to use for cakes, pies, cookies and other sweet treats. It has many healthful values and benefits most which I did not know and I am sure a lot of other people are not aware of either. So here’s a little background about this spice that offers not only a great taste to various foods but also a very good addition for your good health in many areas. Cinnamon is a small tree that grows basically in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Brazil, Viet Nam and Egypt. It is one of the oldest spices known to man and is mentioned in the Bible. In ancient Egypt is was used for medication and beverage flavoring but also as an embalming agent. It was so important that this spice was considered more valuable than gold. The Chinese got hold of it and around 2700 B.C. began using it as a botanical medicine. Midevial Europe was next and because of it’s demand began to be traded regularly between the Near East and Europe. There are basically four kinds of cinnamon, but the two most popular are Ceylon and Cassia cinnamon. Ceylon is the more expensive kind that you will find in specialty food stores, upscale food boutiques and has a sweeter taste. Cassia is darker in color, not as sweet a taste and can be found in just about any name supermarket around the country. It is the most common one used by the general
public. The Chinese have, for years, used cinnamon as a remedy for colds, nausea, diarrhea, menstrual periods and even flatulence and with excellent results, They also see it increase energy, vitality, circulation and is used in the digestion of fruits and dairy products. Both types have the same benefits from a health standpoint. So what are those health benefits and we can gain from using cinnamon on a daily basis? Studies have shown that cinnamon can have a positive effect on blood sugar. In a study done in 2003, sixty people with Type 2 diabetes took 1, 3, 6 grams of cinnamon in pill form daily, which was equal to a quarter of one teaspoon. After 40 days, all 3 amounts of cinnamon reduced fasting blood glucose by 18 to 29%, triglycerides by 23 to 30%, LDL cholesterol by 7 to 27% and total cholesterol by 12 to 26%. In a study done by researchers at the Department of Agriculture, cinnamon was shown to reduce the prolifer or lymphoma cancer cells. It has also been shown to improve brain function in many areas and also can provide an anti- clotting effect in the blood. In a study at Copenhagen University, patients were given a ½ teaspoon of cinnamon prior to their breakfast. After one week they felt significant relief from arthritis and within one month could move without pain. These are just some of the benefits this spice can give us. I can tell you from personal experience that I have been using it daily on a variety of things for almost a year and my blood sugar and cholesterol levels have dropped significantly and never been better and I also feel better physically. I use only a half teaspoon each day sprinkled on a variety of things and I am enjoying the benefits of this great tasting and healthful spice. I use it on burgers, steaks on the grill, chicken, spaghetti sauce and just about anything else. It definitely gives foods a new, different and exciting taste, but most importantly, it is a very healthful spice to add to your daily food intake. As they say, “try it, you’ll like it.” you will enjoy the health benefits cinnamon can provide. Here’s to your good health!

THE CHEROKEE TRAIL OF TEARS 1838-1839
CREATIVE MOTIVATION THROUGH TRIBULATION By Rev Col AnneMarie Dyer From the broad valleys and rolling hills to the rugged mountains deep in the heart of Northwest Georgia, the Native Americans had for 80 centuries called Western Georgia their home. The Aboriginal Archaic Indians lived here before 6200 B.C. The Cherokee were the last great cultural development in Northwest Georgia, before they were forced west by the encroachment of European settlers. Between 1790 and 1830 the population of Georgia increased six-fold. The western push of the settlers created a problem. The Cherokee nation continued in their enchanted land until 1828. It was then that the rumored gold was discovered in the North Georgia Mountains. In Georgia the Cherokee desperately tried to hold onto their “Enchanted Land.” Their fight was valiant and was not with bow and arrow. They used printing press and a government to keep Georgia and the U.S. from taking their homeland. Under orders from President Jackson, in May 1838 the U.S. Army began enforcement of the Indian Removal Act which forced removal of Native American throughout the U.S. Around 3,000 Cherokees were rounded up in the summer of 1838 and loaded onto boats that traveled the Tennessee, Ohio, Mississippi, and Arkansas Rivers into Indian Territory. Many were held in prison camps awaiting their fate. In the winter of 1838-39, 14,000 were marched 1,200 miles through Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas into rugged Indian Territory. An estimated 4,000 died from hunger, exposure and disease. Today the land route taken by the Cherokee is known as the Trail of Tears or, as the direct translation from Cherokee, “The Trail Where They Cried.” (“ Nunna daul Tsuny”). The Chieftain Trail is a unique combination of sites throughout our region that highlights the history of these First Americans. Nowhere else has so much of our Native American heritage been preserved than here in Northwest Georgia, what the Cherokee
called, “The Enchanted Land.” The Mothers of the Cherokee grieved so much that the Chief prayed for a sign to lift the Mother’s spirits. From that day forward, a beautiful new flower, a rose, grew wherever a mother’s tear fell to the ground. The rose is white, for the mother’s tear, a gold center, for the gold taken from the Cherokee lands and 7 leaves on each stem that represent the seven Cherokee clans that made the journey. To this day, the Cherokee Rose prospers along the route of the “Trail of Tears”. The Cherokee Rose is now the official flower of the State of Georgia. With love and devotion the Cherokee continued to provide the inspiration and motivation that kept them going on in this life. Life was a long spiritual quest and being in nature gave them the sense of serenity and strength. Since the Native American “religion” is based on a relationship with the earth and all living things. They received the power of the Great Spirit through fasting, chanting and vision quests. It’s how they felt inside, how their hearts connected and how they lived. A part of their prayer circle in the tipi, they usually prayed while smoking tobacco rolled in corn shucks, with the belief that smoke carries our prayer up to the Creator. They did not spend their Sunday morning in a religious situation, they spent each day in acknowledgment that every day was a holy day, a sacred day. They asked for strength to walk worthily each day so that when they lay down at night they would not be ashamed. That’s called walking the spirit road. It’s not
just following a religion, but following the Universal Being of All Creation, of All Wisdom. We know that there are many kinds of death. It isn’t necessary to leave the physical body in order to let a part of you die that doesn’t serve you any longer. When you allow that to happen, you can be reborn into a new and better life. Their vision quest was perhaps a form of spiritual rebirth. Coping with suffering gives meaning to life- it is what gives us our strength. So in the darkest moments of your own life, never lose sight of the fact that the sun is going to shine through to a great day, a great life. Whatever your potential is, you can reach. When our struggles cause us to think we cannot go on, realize that it is merely a turning point in our life. All power is available to us. I consider all difficulties as a challenge and this motivates me to go on. I become strengthened. There are many spiritual paths but only One Spirit. Sometimes faith becomes like a little candle instead of a bonfire and the winds come and almost blow it out, but it’s still flickering on. As long as it’s still burning, it has the potential of carrying forth the realization of our hopes and dreams. For love is synonymous with the word forgive, they go hand in hand. Remember you can’t tie and cat’s tail and a dog’s tail together and drape them over a clothesline- you’ll have unity but you won’t have harmony. Harmony is a tolerance, a forgiving, a blending- subtle, soft and very strong. In order to live in harmony, the common denominator that binds is “loving on another”. These Indians did not wait for crises to be able to truly manifest their love for one another, they had unconditional love. Learn to motivate yourself by using life’s difficulties and let your every step be as a prayer. Namaste’ Rev Col AnneMarie Dyer colonelwhy@ij.net 727-403-3023 if you have any questions or suggestions.

Horoscopes PISCES - Feb.19-Mar. 20 You’re not in the mood to turn down that extra helping or dessert-so you can swap the heavy cream for trail mix and fresh fruit. Work on your inner well-being and emotional stability—it’s as important as your physical fitness now. Release your grip and surrender a situation to divine forces. It’s time to say goodbye to something you’ve outgrown. You can’t heal this one by trying to force things to go your way. If you feel any aches or pains, they may be connected to your mental or emotional state, so deal with everything on a holistic level.
CANCER - June 22-July 22 A power struggle could erupt in your sphere, upsetting your equilibrium. Stand up for yourself. Wait until your stormy emotions pass, you’ll know just what to say. Step into a leadership role, but instead of getting involved, create distractions. Set up a volleyball net, create a mix of music that will satisfy a variety of tastes, make meals that people can participate in. The less “sit around and talk” time, the better, as conversations are apt to get heated.
SCORPIO - Oct. 24-Nov. 21 A hands-on approach is called for in order to get an aspect of your life back on track. If someone has been taking advantage of your generosity and kindness, it’s time to set up some clear boundaries. Don’t let your temper get involved. You might have sent out a message that everything was cool, only to realize that you needed more space, autonomy and freedom. You get swept up in the urge to merge only to discover how strong your need for alone time can be.
LEO - July 23-Aug. 22 Give yourself over to those escapist tendencies. You aren’t doing anyone any good by hovering about, waiting for progress to emerge, micromanaging people, or distracting yourself with busy work. Your productivity will increase exponentially after you’ve given yourself a break. Connect to new people, places, learning experiences, and tribes that speak your language. As your interests shift, your circle of friends will naturally widen. Don’t allow their smallmindedness to restrict your growth.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov. 22-Dec. 21 You may have become overly consumed with your ambitions. Hard as it may be to step away from your computer, take recess breaks, where you leave all your gadgets behind and step out for some fresh air and relaxation. Yes, that includes your cell phone. People zap your imaginative energy The point of the exercise is to connect to your inner voice. Get into that meditative state, so you can connect to the creative force within.
VIRGO - Aug. 23-Sept. 22 The spirit of competition is afoot, but monitor yourself carefully. You could ignite a full-on rivalry if you forget that it’s all just a game. Friends and coworkers are ALREADY a twinge jealous of you. Getting carried away with trying to prove yourself only makes them feel more insecure. Expand the radius of your spotlight to include other people’s accomplishments.
CAPRICORN - Dec. 22-Jan. 19 What matters is your own confidence level with your decisions. Do you feel that you’re on a positive, productive, self-loving path? If so, keep on keeping on. The naysayers are likely to come around in time. If you know in your heart of hearts that you’re playing with fire, take a time out. It can be hard to extricate yourself from charismatic people, but it’s important to look at the whole picture.
TAURUS - Apr. 20-May 20 Stress levels rise, setting off the alarm bells. You want to run away, escape the pressure, blow off steam, but don’t let your destructive tendencies take hold. Deepen your connection to the mystical healing forces of the universe. Explore guided meditations, energy healings, acupuncture, and craniosacral massage. Unite your mind and body. Become intimately acquainted with those little voices in your head, even if you don’t like what they are saying.
AQUARIUS - Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Your tendency to weigh the pros and cons of a situation could spiral into full-on obsessing. The culprit underneath all this? Debilitating perfectionism. Those little voices in your head are having a shouting match, pull back and observe your own mind. Freewriting in your journal can be downright enlightening. Scrawl out your fears on one page and reality on another. You’ll see that the two worlds don’t quite match up-very liberating!
GEMINI - May 21-June 21 If you’ve been splurging beyond your means on bottles of wine and appetizers, it’s time to draw the line for yourself. Your friends might actually be feeling the pinch, but no one wants to admit it. What ARE the things you’d be saving for? There’s no better time to explore investment clubs, financial support groups, and other gatherings that could inspire and help you in your path to accruing (and holding on to) true wealth.
LIBRA - Sept. 23-Oct. 23 You’ve been feeling extra ambitious lately, but in the process may be neglecting affairs of the heart. When you start trying to keep up with the Joneses, you lose the best parts of yourself. You’re the zodiac’s “peace, love, and harmony” sign, so it’s important to remain open-hearted in all that you do. Don’t treat people poorly, use them for your own gain, or step on their backs to climb the ladder of success. Get a bit more emotionally invested in your co-workers.
ARIES - Mar. 21 – Apr. 19 Find an outlet to release your rage. A vigorous workout, belting out karaoke at your favorite dive bar, even squeezing a stress ball throughout the day. All the same, this may be a signal that you need to work a bit more independently. People will be happy to help if you delegate responsibility, before you completely overload your circuits.
