Blue Ridge Opportunities looks to expand community outreach By Kim Walter

A

s Blue Ridge Opportunities continues to expand its client base and number of services, one if its top priorities is being a true part of the Front Royal and Warren County community. Blue Ridge Opportunities, a nonprofit corporation, strives to build foundations on which individuals with disabilities can achieve success. Staff provides job skills assessment, training and placement, day support and community integration for individuals with a variety of needs. Founded in September 1989 as the Warren County Workshop, the organization combined efforts with the Northwestern Workshop in Winchester, now known as NW Works of Winchester, the Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Northwestern Community Services Board, local community organizations and individuals who had the vision to meet such a need in the area. In 1992, it was incorporated independently as a private nonprofit. A renewed vision came in August 2007, when the name was changed to Blue Ridge Opportunities.

The Town of Front Royal has recently noticed the organization and its value, and employs clients to help maintain the cleanliness of streets and horticulture.

“That’s been a great partnership, because our folks have their shirts on while they’re out in the community, and suddenly other people and businesses start to catch on,” Pantano said. “I think people are starting to realize that if they need some basic things done, we can help.
