NVSU suspends 42nd Intrams due to ‘Lawin,’ resumes Friday Jakee Mar M. Mangaccat Nueva Vizcaya State University – Bayombong officially opened its 42nd Intramural Meet on October 19 at NV Sports Complex, but had to suspend the games later within the same day due to Super Typhoon ‘Lawin.’ The sports event kicked off with a parade graced by the different units composed of team-ups of the university’s colleges; headed by their unit managers, they paraded downtown Bayombong. Unit I Red Dragons, composed of the College of Human Ecology (CHE) and College of Engineering (CE), is headed by Prof. Carlouie Belonio while the Unit II Raging Bulls, consists of the College of Forestry (CF), the College of Agriculture (CAg), and the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), is headed by Dr. Rafael Luis Morillo. Meanwhile, the College of Teacher Education (CTED) teamed up with the Laboratory High School make up Unit III Blue Marlins that is led by Mr. Benjie Calaramo; and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and College of Business and Economics (CBE) comprise Unit IV Sting-

ers that is managed by Mr. Christopher Gurat.
To stand in for Bayombong Mayor Ralph Lantion as the event’s keynote speaker, Municipal Administrator James Baluyan encouraged everyone to promote active lifestyle through sports. He also emphasized that sports should not be about winning.
Immediately after the opening rites, the games were started. Due to the weather advisory from PAGASA that the province will experience Typhoon Signal No. 3, however, the Intramural Meet was suspended following the order of President Andres Z. Taguiam through Dr. Loreta Vivian R. Galima, campus administrator. All on-going games were suspended. In another advisory on October 20, the president ordered the resumption of the Intramurals today, October 21. Meanwhile, the rest of the games and activities will be held either on Saturday (October 22) or Monday (October 24). VC

WINNING MOMENT. CAS-CBE Stingers rule the floor with their groovy moves, jaw-dropping stunts, and unshakable confidence to secure the title for the Cheers, Dance, and Yells Competition of the 42nd Intramurals at NV Sports Complex, October 18 Photo by Billy Joe Peralta

“Super blessed po kami dahil nanalo kami this year. Intramurals Suspension, what about it? Shortly after the 42nd Intramural Meet of the university officially began, all games were suspended due to the announcement from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAGASA) that Nueva Vizcaya will be affected by super typhoon “Lawin.” All of us might be wondering now, what’s the plan? One thing is certain, the Intramural Meet must now push through even if it would mean reporting on a weekend (Saturday).

The suspension of the Intramurals proved to be a sound decision. PAGASA initially advised that the province is under storm signal number 2. Later within the day, the agency escalated the signal to number 3. As pushing through with the event that day may compromise the safety of students and university personnel, alike, it was necessary to suspend the games. The suspension, however, may inevitably affect pre-scheduled activities such as the MidTerm exams next week and the Regional Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) which is due to be hosted by our university the week after next. Given these, there are very few options on when the event may be moved. Now that ‘Lawin’ is almost out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), University President Dr. Andres Z. Taguiam through Campus Administrator Dr. Vivian R. Galima already ordered for the Intramurals to resume today, October 21. However, one day surely won’t be enough to finish all the lined-up events especially that Prof. Mary Jane Cacacho, overall coordinator, has announced that all unfinished games will be reverted to zero in accordance with game rules. The other events may then be conducted either this Saturday or on Monday next week. One cannot deny that the academics of students are now gravely affected with class suspensions for various reasons. Scheduling it on Monday, October 24, may rob teachers of last-minute lectures and discussions before they administer the MidTerm exams later that week. As such, the best option is to sacrifice one Saturday to finish all the Intrams events. Such would also give time for students, along with student-athletes, to review for the upcoming examinations. Finishing the event as planned may no longer be possible, but finishing it without adjusting other school activities is definitely possible with a little sacrifice from us. Meantime, let us forget our “Thank God It’s Friday” tagline. The suspension may have messed up our schedule but making adjustments could put things back in order.VC
