Editor’s Note: Every drop of sweat has paid off. Every hour of sleep and vacation sacrificed was worth it. All the ink drained out of pens made sense. The wait is over. Thanks for reading this far. What you have in your hands did not turn into what your eyes can see now, in just a snap of a finger -- like magic. It was not made overnight, but from countless of overtime (not to mention, overnight) sessions with fellow student-writers. They are students, just like you, but they choose to spend nights and weekends in school, do not mind sleeping on sheets of Manila paper, and love -- and will always love -- writing and expressing their thoughts. (Thanks to Kuryer pips and Mam Knowie! :D) As another decade unfolds for Varsity Courier and this university, get to know our new president, Dr. Andres Z. Taguiam, with his vision to transform the university through leadership with integrity. We have also featured the best among Novo Vizcayanos, including Hillarie Parungao, and Jimboy Martin, and how they made it to the top despite life’s challenges. In this issue, we also have inspiring insights and narratives of our very own student leaders, athletes, and other campus personalities. Of course, this will never be possible without ‘our’ coffee maker and “five star” accommodations. Thanks to everyone who helped Kuryer, especially to God who did great things for us; without Him, we could not have made it this far. Happy reading! Donna Mae B. Torrecampo Editor-in-Chief

Varsity Courier: a decade of excellence and integrity amidst hurdles and challenges
Editorial
I
t was in the year 2005 when Varsity Courier started serving the studentry as the official publication of the university — not merely listening to the battle cries of students but becoming one with them in such issues. Studentissues can be multifarious and multifaceted -- issues about fellow students, the university administration, and the community as well. However, VC has been dormant for some time -- just like any other organization, except that our dormancy was always confronted, questioned, and criticized. We would usually be interrogated in public fora and conventions on various aspects, specifically on delayed publication/circulation of our issues. This we cannot really deny; although, we definitely can explain why and how these problem arises. Don’t get us wrong. We appreciate that the NVSU community is critical about these things. Being critical is something we would appreciate to see in you. We acknowledge your right to know where your 70-peso college organ fee goes. Nevertheless, we appeal that you let us explain matters from start to finish to also provide some context, especially to the lower years who may not even know that our student publication exists. For those who have never heard the name, Varsity Courier is the official student publication of the university. It is our duty to produce at least one issue per semester. And our fund primarily comes from the P70 that you pay for the college organ. Also, we may source out funds through income-generating activities, advertisements, and solicitations. The student publication of academic institutions has at least two main functions – first, to provide an avenue for students to voice out their concerns to higher authorities and second, is to raise the awareness, and consequently, the participation of students on issues, not only within the university but also in the larger world. Within the past ten years of VC (aside from the Vizcaya Tech years), challenges and criticisms have become a norm; these are no longer new to us. When we committed ourselves to the publication, we (or at least some of us) knew that we have to hurdle a lot of bumps, or even crush boulders, along the way.
Being a student means a hard time. And being a student and a staff of the school publication at the same time means being selfless. Sacrifice may be a big word for others, but it is a word that we encounter on a daily basis. The published issues that come out, to begin with, are products of hours of brainstorming and conceptualizing, and days of writing and revising (and revising some more). And that is just the writing part. Our editors and moderator edit our articles, give out points for improvement, and return our articles for more revising. The process is just half-way through. Our layout artists spend sleepless nights, endure irritated eyes (from computer radiation), and even sore, calloused fingers just to make our issues visually-appealing. Once done, some of our members spend time at publishing hous es proofing copies before it is mass produced. And then, we rest? NO! Even at intervals when we are not working on issues, tasks are still aplenty. Preparing and signing resolutions, making liq-
uidation reports (which only sounded simple but is actually meticulous as hell) among other reports, canvassing and purchasing supplies, and the list goes on. The fact that members come and go as students graduate, screening and training new members make it more difficult to continue the momentum in a publication. Much time and discipline is needed to maintain productive and effective publication so we sacrifice our weekends, our holidays, and even our semestral breaks. But, not a lot of people are aware of these. While we owe every student an explanation for matters concerning the student publication, we hope that it must be done with due respect and knowledge of our context. our and w e e m uphold t i nu e
People may question reliability, credibility, integrity. But to these firmly declare: we work for reliability, we body credibility, and we integrity. And we will concarrying these ideals as we continue aiming for excellence.#

o you remember the time when you were still a kid that you never wanted to sleep or even take a nap? Or those times when you just play all day not worrying about the time and days that pass by, as if you have all the time in the world (which basically is true at that stage).
Much of this are experienced even until college. Sometimes, you’ll ask yourself if you truly belong in your peer. Some choose to be motivated by these and push their limit to excel, but most of the time, these are the reasons why students choose to be contagious and remain mediocre.
Childhood sure is great! I always wanted to go back to those times but that can never happen. Anyway, life is challenging but it is (or will be) all worth it.
Because I spend almost all my life in school, I was molded in school and for school. As school pay attention to the “big” names who excel in academics or other fields, those who do not excel are neglected. I have not felt anything wrong about this, not until I felt left out myself. It was then that I realized – school can be unfair. As early as preschool, school has given so much weight to academic performance. We had section A or star sections to classify students based on “intelligence”. And at the end of each quarter or grading period, top performers are recognized. This kind of privileging is not limited to academics as they extend to the kids’ social life. In making friends, kids are likely to choose the “popular ones.”
As an achiever, I have been intoxicated with recognition that I have become insincere with the things I do – I do good hoping that I will be praised for it. This has also pushed me to wear masks to please people. I even learned to hide my feelings and fooled even myself. Until one day, I began asking myself, “ano bang ipinaglalaban ko?” I realized, that living my life trying to please everyone and trying to be Miss Perfect is boring. Ironically, I have stopped living and growing. As I mature and become independent, I learned (and I still continue learning) how to deal with failures. Before, failing means a hard time – fixing yourself and starting over. I have realized that it is part of learning. There’s this question that hit me: When is the “right time” to fail? When you’re in your 30s? 40s? 50s? Now, ask yourself, too.
Let’s face it. We are growing up. As we are getting older, we face more and more responsibilities. Sometimes, I try to escape problems and tasks by spending more time in bed, sleeping. Life has been so demanding and stressful for me, especially in school. Somehow, I know that some of you feel the same. For those who cannot relate, good for you! I am not against schooling. In the first place, I am still a student. My parents have always encouraged me to excel in my academics and all my life, I have been trying to do just that. But while growing up, I realized some things about school.
From my simple fear of getting a grade of 75 or tres, it has developed into my fear of ‘life’.
Grades and rankings have always been treated a big deal, as if they can measure who you are. You can always have the cleanest transcript – it is a plus factor – but, it would be more important to know how these grades translate to your attitude towards life. I salute those without singko and tres, but I also admire those who failed a lot yet were able to stand and continue trying. It is hard to maintain grades and miss out having fun (I mean, clean fun, of course); just for academics, but it is harder to move forward when the crowd is holding you back. I used to be grade-conscious. Every now and now, I still get stressed when I do not get good grades. There is still a part of me that is afraid to fail. I am still afraid to be rejected. In my opinion, this fear has been the worst thing school has taught me.
Failing, in general, does not mean we are also a failure. It actually means we have more opportunities to grow and learn. Those who do not fail are, of course, those who do not try, in the first place. We should take these failures as a chance to make ourselves better, accept our mistakes, and learn from them. But this is not to say that we will take things for granted; instead, we should give our best shot in everything that we do. I am not saying these to fill your minds with negativities about school. All I am saying is that schooling is not everything. It does make us a better person, but it does not measure our whole being. We need to get a degree for our future, but how much we have learned cannot fully be accounted for by our grades. In the end, it is not our IQ that will matter, it is our Emotional Quotient (EQ)! How we deal with the bigger issues in life, how we withstand bigger challenges, how we handle the bigger world. After all, exchange of ideas, human contact, and finding our purpose, is what life really is.
Feeling mo ba nag-iisa ka? Walang kakampi? Walang karamay? Inside out Talking It Over Jakee Mar M.Mangaccat| Associate Editor

he prospect of the strict implementation of wearing uniforms has caused annoying implications to students, leading some to wonder how come did they come up with that idea. The very desire to make the school worthy of its epithet as a “premier university” is often described as ironic for the general public doesn’t comply with the enactment, to some degree. In its bid to make an impression that NVSU is a university of substance, the administration has looked at various factors that affect our university’s image. And the students definitely play a part in the creation of this image – students’ achievements, for one, affect this academe’s tomorrow. It was in 2012 when the university administration put into force the implementation of wearing uniforms in their objective to strengthen campus security. With exception to students who entered the university in 2012, everyone is obliged to purchase university uniforms – an expenditure that some may find impractical or even unnecessary. In addition, colleges prescribe other uniforms – for their laboratory classes, practice teaching subjects, and physical education, among others. Aside from all these, organizations may also require their members to have their official shirt. It has been a common sight on campus that students who are not in their proper uniforms are compelled to go home to change.
Greetings of Excellence and peace!
At the outset, many students opposed the policy saying, “public school lang naman ito!” And these sentiments of students emerge every now and then. Appalling, it truly is. And as a student, I have been reprimanded one time when... The guard confiscated my ID card and... There have been some students who complain, not because of the uniform policy, per se, but because of the seeming disparity in its implementation. Complaints spring from the students’ experiences that some of the guards are not consistent in the rules that they uphold. For instance, some students who are not in their proper uniform are allowed to enter
while others are not. There are students who can’t help but shout out to security guards not with they are banned but the way they treat other people. I mean, those girls who wear above-the-knee dresses. There’s a sense of disparity going on. NVSU is a state university which envisions to provide affordable yet quality education. NVSU students are state scholars. On the part of the security guards, with all due respect sirs, we recognize your job as much as you give us the services that we deserve. However, desist from making fool out of students who feel pity for themselves for such an illicit conduct. Take fully accountable of your job to make the best of your professional ethics at hand. Wearing uniforms has nothing to do with the fundamental nature of education itself. If only they could get it: how important it is to us, in our studies and heart’s content. Whatever a proposal can be made, as long as it’s for the benefit of other people, then so be it. Because no amount of money could ever taint the ideals and real nature of learning. In hindsight, wearing uniforms is not the real deal; so, focus more on other pressing issues concerning the students themselves. After all, more often than not, NVSU upholds freedom and equality at best and always inside out.
An Open Letter
A big yet exciting and challenging responsibility was entrusted to me by the NVSU studentry. Serving as the voice of 11,000 students as president of the Northern Campus Student Supreme Council (NCSSC), president of the University Supreme Student Council (USSC), and one of the members of the NVSU-Board of Regents. It is indeed a big responsibility for I, together with the council, serves as the mediator between the students and the faculty and staff of the university. The council serves as the main forum for the articulation of ideals and sentiments of the students. The council assists the university administration in instilling discipline among students. The council partners with administration in the realization of a progressive Filipino society by promoting virtues of honesty, loyalty, obedience, dedication for work and study, cooperation, equality and fairness among the NVSU students. Lastly, I also represent the studentry in various fora related to students’ welfare, youth activities, and development programs. As a leader, you must be what they usually say “the

In 1 Peter 5:3, the Bible states that leaders should become “examples to the flock” (KJV). To me, this means that to be a leader is to be a good example. Dr. Florentina S. To my fellow students, our dear faculty members, and our university officials and staff: with these humble accomplishments, we would like to ac-

To NVSU, “Grace be unto you, and peace, from God Our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ” (KJV) -- Ephesians 1:2
To my fellow student leaders, let me leave these words with you: Serving is never a sacrifice, it is a privilege.” “If you quit, no more day will be your day.” “Don’t stop when you are tired, stop when you are done.”
We look forward to another six months (the remaining months of our term) of more fruitful, more productive, and better services to students.

asyadong ka na kasing sikat! Masyado kang masaya!
Sabi nga ni James Pratt, isang matagaumpay na entrepreneur ng Millionare’s Network, “We are quick to CRITICIZE but slow to RECOGNIZE.” If I can’t have it, neither can you!”

At… Tada! Holy sibuyas! Anong napala ng mga Pinoy? Kaginhawaan ba? Tila l-umevel up pa ang anomalya. So ano, impeach ulet? Pagkatapos ni Arroyo, si PNoy naman. Impeach ulet?
Maging mapanuri! Mapagmatyag! Matang... may sore eyes.

Lando’s fury shakes NV Nap Gerald G. Tolentino News from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) on October 20 reports that Nueva Vizcaya has recorded an initial damage of more than P183 million in agriculture and infrastructure due to typhoon ‘Lando’ and has declared two casualties. Six-year old Renay Tullao of Barangay Villaluz, Bambang went missing while another unidentified trailer truck helper died in Tactac, Santa Fe during the course of the typhoon. Due to the heavy downpour, several landslides blocked the Maharlika Highway, particularly in some parts of Tactac, Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya and Caranglan, Nueva Ecija. For several hours, trucks and heavy equipment tried to clear the road as commuters going in and out of the province were stuck in an unmoving traffic. Reports calculate that more than 1,300 families and more than 7,000 individuals were affected in Nueva Vizcaya alone. Meanwhile, the typhoon’s damage to infrastructure was estimated to amount to more than P68 million and more than P114 million in agriculture. On October 21, members of the Provincial Board signed a resolution declaring the province under state of calamity due to the extent of damage caused by typhoon ‘Lando’. #

In a study conducted by Jobstreet in 2010, one of the country’s job-seeking site, results show that as much as 75% of employers reject job applicants who have poor English proficiency. (for quotes/ sidebar) To equip engineering students with the necessary skills in their future jobs, the College of Engineering (CE) has started implementing an “EnglishSpeaking” Policy (ESP) on July 2015. “I was bothered by the news,” remarks Engr. Jessie P. So ano ‘yung pwede nating gawin para matulungan yung mga estudyante? To practice English… Kaya with the [help of] faculty members, we started implementing the policy,” explains Engr. Salas, NVSU’s Vice President for Research, Extension, and Business for Development (VPREBD). When asked about their leadership priorities, de los Reyes expressed his plan to prioritize guidance and counselling services and sports programs. Part of his vision was for NVSU to establish College of Law and College of Medicine in the future and he intended to start working on these plans during his term if he is elected as president. Also, he hoped to encourage both campuses to pursue qualitative researches and work towards becoming a researchoriented university.
On the other hand, Salas wanted to clearly define the university’s vision of becoming a premiere university. For her, to attain this goal means focusing on student welfare. As such, there is a need to condu c t capability-

El Niño:
Ang Matinding Daluyong
M

Disaster Preparedness Reonel M. Gallardo
Y
early, our country is being affected by num- bers of different climate occurrences and calamities which are truly destructive. Considering our geographical location, with the Pacific Ocean in the East, the Philippines is lying on a disaster-prone area. We are located along, what is dubbed, the Pacific Ring of Fire that makes us at risk of encountering earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A report published on Inquirer Global Nation (World Disaster Report, 2012) declares the Philippines the third most disaster-prone country in the world because of its high exposure to natural calamities. It has been noted in the past years that the country has been experiencing stronger typhoons. These tropical cyclones that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and often make a landfall, damage properties, displace families, and even claim lives of Filipinos. Remember super typhoon Yolanda which hit the Visayan region April last year? This historical typhoon stirred the government, stakeholders, private sectors, and
even the private citizens of the country to do serious actions. These rapid changes that we are experiencing from nature demands our attention. Finding climate justice is an important issue these days – people should get involved in putting in place policies and plans to alleviate the harmful effects of climate change. In 2010, Republic Act No. 10121, also known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Act of 2010, was signed by the president having the mandate to strengthen disaster management in the Philippines being a country prone to natural hazards. T h e develop roll out enable ment, the units, and
DRRM aims to a framework and resources that will the national governlocal government other stakeholders to
build communities that can survive disasters. Section 6 of R.A 10121 specifies how the DRRM could help us prepare for disasters. For one, the council is set to “establish a national early warning and emergency alert system to provide accurate and timely advice to national or local emergency response organizations and to the general public through diverse mass media to include digital and analog broadcast, cable, satellite television and radio, wireless communications, and landline communications” (paragraph E). Also, DRRM is expected to “develop appropriate risk transfer mechanisms that shall guarantee social and economic protection and increase resiliency in the face of disaster” (paragraph F).

Disaster Preparedness The signing of R.A. 10121 is intended to help empower the different sectors of the community to help us prepare for these catastrophic happenings and to be resilient to these challenging scenarios. We need to remember, however, that efforts are also expected of us. We must make awareness of disaster and its impact to people our primary concern. We should educate ourselves of the effects of these disastrous changes on climate. We should learn how to prepare for natural disasters. We should lend a hand in educating other people. And finally, we should take part in carrying out government policies and plans that, in the first place, is meant to safeguard our welfare. We cannot control nature. We cannot avoid typhoons and other natural disasters, but we definitely can prepare for these instances to minimize damages and casualties that these may bring.#
“Sometimes in order to convince the decisionmakers and even the people to do things right away is, you have to show: How many people will die, how many buildings will suffer, how many millions of pesos would you need to rehabilitate or replace this? You need damage or impact figures, rather than the threat.” -PhilVolcs Sec.Renato Solidum
Tips:
1. Bear in mind that disasters can happen anytime. Be mentally and emotionally ready. 2. Avoid panicking. People normally get scared during a survival scenario, but preparing before an emergency helps. 3. Create a survival plan for your family that considers each member’s physical condition, medical issues, mobility challenges, and other special cases. 5. Keep your survival plan simple and practical. 4. Train yourself and your family members on survival through activities like camping outdoors. 6. Know what disasters are likely to occur in your place. 7. Create emergency kits for your family which should contain mobile emergency supplies. 8. Physically prepare and practice your preparedness plan. 9. Be sure to keep track of expiration dates of your emergency supplies. 10. Spread facts, not fear. Share survival training and knowledge with your neighbors. While it is important to always be prepared, it should not lead to fear and paranoia. We should still be able to live our lives to the fullest.# Adapted from: “10 Survival Tips for Disaster Preparedness.” (27 December 2009). Newsweek.

(1st princess), Mia Allyson Howell (2nd princess), Ma. Vanessa Wright (3rd princess) and Emmy Mary Tiglao (4th princess). ALDUB, Kilig to the Bones! Sunshine N. Puguon
ALDUB you! Pabebe wave pa more! MAINEnamahal kita! MaALDEN kita! MaiDen heaven talaga!

Katunayan, binansagan ito bilang “Love Team of the Year” (kinabog lahat ng love teams!).

The Smile of Success. Jeremy Dasalla (5th from the left) was awarded as this year’s Oustanding Student of the year together with his co-competitors Krichelle Maureen Gaerlan and Kelvin Fred Tamiao (3rd and 4th from left) East Tssp
One-to-one:
Agri’s JEM is 2015 MOSL
“I represented not only myself but also my organization. Maybe the judges saw what is in my heart through my eyes, my words that are being translated into actions, and the love I have for the studentry…,” reasoned Jeremy V. Dasalla, a third year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student when asked about being awarded Most Outstanding Student Leader of the Year. Born on September 6, 1993, “Jem,” as he is fondly called, was raised by his farmer-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jenelyn Dasalla at Buliwao, Quezon, Nueva Vizcaya. Multi-talented Jem excels not only in music but also in academics. He has graduated with honors at Aldersgate College - Elementary School and Aldersgate College - Science High School. At an early age, his leadership potentials has already been evident. His passion to serve his schoolmates continued until he entered college. At the moment, he is the incumbent NCSSC Vice President. Get to know Jem, one of NVSU’s gem in this exclusive interview with Varsity Courier. VC: Why did you choose to study here at NVSU? JEM: I chose NVSU because I believe that SUCs have low or affordable tuition fee, yet (they) provide quality education that enables students to become competitive. VC: Why did you choose to take Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA)? What is your ultimate ambition? JEM: I chose BSA because I know how farmers are being treated by the society, and I know how hard it is to work just to feed the nation – these were some of the reasons that motivated me to take up BSA. I would also want to go back to the field after graduation to educate people from the agricultural sector and somehow help uplift their way of living…
Krichelle Maureen C. Gaerlan
My only dream is to touch, influence, inspire, and change other people.
VC: Can you give us a sample question thrown by the judges? What was you answer?
VC: What made you decide to be a student-leader and join various organizations?
JEM: “Do you have to die a bit to let others shine?”-Question from Ms. Apriliza Sagadraca.
JEM: I joined organizations because I believe in their advocacies – to be the change, to transform others, and to promote the welfare and well-being of students and the youth.
Opo. Kailangan.
VC: What have you learned about joining organizations? JEM: Putting one’s self last and putting others first…. Being in a certain organization, the most important things are to influence, inspire, and change other people. VC: What are the challenges that you have encountered as a student-leader? JEM: My time for my studies, friends, and family were decreased. But eventually, I learned to adjust and just enjoy what I am doing. VC: Who were your peers during the search for 2015 MOSL? Is there someone you already expected to win the award during the screening? JEM: When I saw Ms. Krichelle Maureen Gaerlan and Mr. Kelvin Fred Tamiao, both from the College of Engineering, I already expected that one of them will be the winner, but I just told myself that an award will not and will never define me as a student-leader. VC: How did you find the screening? JEM: The screening was like conducting an inoculating experiment. You will never know if your experiment is successful or contaminated. I felt very nervous….
21
VC: What were your achievements? What do you think is your greatest contribution as a leader here in NVSU? JEM: I actually do not have lots of achievements. Ito lang, the simple things like attending SO (student organization) meetings and supporting college and University activities; attending local (universitywide), provincial, regional, and national seminars like NCSSC-SO Echo Seminar, Citrus Dekat Festival Tourism Convention, Seminars on Financial Health, Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines, Regional Youth Hours, and YMCA National Congress. My greatest contribution as a student leader here in NVSU are providing quality and just service to the studentry regarding the issues involving student rights and welfare. VC: What motivates you to continue leading the studentry? JEM: When my simple hello/hi paints a meaningful smile on the face of every student. VC: What did you feel upon receiving the award? JEM: Of course, I felt very honored. It was the first in the history of our college and the university that a student leader from CA [College of Agriculture] will bag such prestigious award. It was very sweet [the award], because it is the best medicine to cure
VOLUME X NUMBER 1 the bitterness I received throughout my term as an SC President. VC: How prepared are you as a candidate for Top Outstanding Student of the Philippines? What are your plans? JEM: As of now, I cannot rate how prepared I am for the TOSP because I still have three sems remaining, but the Office of the Student Affairs and Services and I are preparing for that upcoming tough battle. And I am really working hard to reach TOSP. VC: What’s the greatest challenge for being a leader? JEM: When you receive or hear negative criticisms. But, I tell you, if you’re able to turn the greatest challenge into positive, it could be your greatest motivation. VC: Tell us something about your other (i.e., lessserious) side. Sport/ Past-time activities hobbies or games?

JEM: To my fellow NVSU students, do not be afraid to voice out and reach out to us, your NCSSC Officers. Because we are not just officers, we are just like you, too. Let me also remind you that you do not have to be an officer to do the things we, your officers, are doing. For as long as you have the willingness and goodness in you, you can be a change. long-running New York Times and Business Week bestseller that has been translated into 24 languages, a Whole New Mind: Moving from Information Age to Conceptual Age has challenged and changed the thoughts and ways of thinking of today’s generation. This influential book was written by Daniel H. Pink is also the host and co-executive producer of National Geographic Channel’s TV show, Crowd Control, which explores and evaluates human behavior through fun social experiments.
Our brain is said to be comprised of two hemispheres: the left that controls the right side of our body and the right that controls the left side. While the left hemisphere is said to be sequential as it specializes in text and in handling logic; in contrast, the right hemisphere is simultaneous as it specializes in context and in handling knowledge about the world. Although these two hemispheres work together, Pink aimed to introduce the right-directed thinking to the readers.
Evolved from an era of great farmers, nation builders, and industrial workers to an era of professionals, after the age of information workers, what comes next? Pink asserts in his book that parents, who encourage their children to pursue “left-brain dominance” professions like lawyers, accountants, doctors, and engineers, among others, have got it all wrong. According to Pink, the future belongs per-

PRETTY GIRLS
Number one internationally bestselling author Karin Slaughter returns with a sophisticated and chilling psychological thriller of dangerous secrets, cold vengeance, and unexpected absolution, in which two estranged sisters must come together to find truth about two harrowing tragedies, twenty years apart, that devastate their lives. Sisters. Strangers. Survivors. More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. RED QUEEN This infographic supports and defines the six essential right-brain aptitudes in a corresponding book review of Daniel Pink’s “A Whole New Mind: Information age to Conceptual age” Infographics by Emaree B. Valenzuela
This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
the Conceptual Age (arts and humanities) is when you’re happy with what you’re doing and you’re making money out of it. competence, more on silent knowledge than technical manuals, and more on fashioning big picture than sweating on details. That is why high technology is no longer enough. People need to increase welldeveloped modern abilities with aptitudes that are high concept and high touch. High concept involves the capacity to detect patterns and opportunities. High touch is the ability to empathize with others to understand details of human interaction. Pink does multiple researches and observations to come up with his book that outlines the six fundamental human abilities that are essential for professional success and personal fulfillment: not just function but also design, not just argument but also story, not just focus but also symphony, not just logic but also empathy, not just seriousness but play, and not just accumulation but also meaning. In the past age, right-brain skills have been disdained and oppressed by the left side. People think that if they enhance their logic, language, speech and analyzing skills, and ended up to be high-salary professional, they are successful. The real success in
We have different thoughts and ideas on how to reach success as we admire stories and biographies of successful people, read inspirational books, and also strive to obtain a good degree in school. Pink’s book inspired a lot readers and many of them are businessmen from the 20th century and now adapting to the 21st. The book A Whole New Mind is recommended for teenagers and young adults (including university students such as us) since we are approaching the conceptual age. Aside from reading books such as this, I also encourage youngsters to explore thoughts, phrases, books, and also inspirational videos and documentaries. Also, take note of this excerpt quoted by one of the most versatile, prolific and great designer-Karim Rashid, here are some points: “Never say ‘I could have done that “because you didn’t”, “Consume experiences not things”, “Normal is not good”, and “Here and now is all we got”.#
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart…
LITTLE BLACK LIES
In such a small community as the Falkland Islands, a missing child is unheard of. In such a dangerous landscape it can only be a terrible tragedy, surely... When another child goes missing, and then a third, it’s no longer possible to believe that their deaths were accidental, and the villagers must admit that there is a murderer among them. Even Catrin Quinn, a damaged woman living a reclusive life after the accidental deaths of her own two sons a few years ago, gets involved in the searches and the speculation. And suddenly, in this wild and beautiful place that generations have called home, no one feels safe and the hysteria begins to rise. But three islanders—Catrin, her childhood best friend, Rachel, and her ex-lover Callum—are hiding terrible secrets. And they have two things in common: all three of them are grieving, and none of them trust anyone, not even themselves. In Little Black Lies, her most shocking and engaging suspense novel to date, Sharon Bolton will keep the reader guessing until the very last page.

ave you tried creating rhythm using cups? Mixing music to create mash-ups? Stunned with the vocal chords of the Bella’s? Startled with the Treble Makers dance moves? Can’t get over with the Das Sound Machine extreme performance?Experienced last song syndrome (LSS) with the soundtracks of Pitch Perfect? In 2012, the pop-pumped musical comedy Pitch Perfect gained the admiration of audiences and gave Pitch Perfect its sleeper status with a $115,350,426 million worldwide theatrical take in the same year and $68,315 in the Philippines. After the release of Pitch Perfect: The Quest of Acapella Glory, more or less three years in the making, Pitch Perfect sequel was first released last May 15 in USA and grossed $286,654,198 million worldwide, and $4,644,512 in the Philippines, surpassing the original movie’s total gross in just five days and deliberate as the highest-grossing musical comedy of all time! Acamazing right? Pitch Perfect talks about a freshman student, Beca Mitchell who loves making mash-ups and wants to be a music producer. Reluctantly, she become a member of the all-female acappella group Barden Bella’s where she met Patricia “Fat Amy”, a hugely comical woman whom she considers her best friend. Pitch Perfect divulges a standard plot but makes use of superb melodious performances throughout even before the International Championship of Col-
legiate A Cappella. Moreover, the romance between Jesse Swanson, Beca’slove interest and affiliate of the Treblemakers, Bella’s main rival was accentuated in the movie. Also, the jovial, persistent and attentiongrabbing quirks of Fat Amy made each scene more interesting among the viewers. On the other side, Pitch Perfect 2 deals with a more full-fledged plot considering Bella’s new competitor, the Das Sound Machine (DSM), the group who performs with an astonishing precision but who also has humungous regard for their own talents. In the second pat of the movie, Fat Amy and Bumper, former Treblemakers frontrunner acted major romantic scenes humorously. Meanwhile, freshman Emily Junk, an aspiring songwriter joined the Bellas after singing her own rendition of “Flashlight” which later on, became the winning piece in the ICCA’s.The story also deals with redemption -- Fat Amy’s wardrobe malfunction during their performance for the US President’s birthday led to the embarrassment of the whole group. However, this did not stop the Bellas from their aim to win the 2015 World Championship of A Cappella, despite being earlier banned from competing in the ICCA’s. There have been bad reviews on the sequel, pointing out that Becca’s role was noticeably sidelined. Also, the Treblemakers are said to be more appealing than the DSM. The movie also mentioned that other countries from all over the world admire Filipino singers. In terms of the music played, songs picked in the original movie are popular songs released in 2012 which includes Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars, Titanium by David Guetta, Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus and Price tag by Jessie J. Such tracks are buoyant and energy-filled. The sequel, meanwhile, includes Thong Song, Baby Got Back and Bootylicious which are more of rock, jazz, and medley. ith combined creative thinking, experiment, and confidence, people come up with avantgarde styles from head to toe that surely make heads turn. We can actually observe that fashion, although it appears to be recurring, it has also been continuously evolving. One of the most accessible sources of information these days are social networking sites as people get to share photos, videos, and links. And with the wide range of audience that social networking sites can reach, famous personalities and celebrities, alike, have influenced more and more up-and-coming fashionistas to get updated with the current fashion trends. For an instant fashionista you, we have rounded up some fashion must-haves:
Jogger Pants More and more teenagers (and some adults) are getting hooked on this “hottest trend in bottoms” as SportsOneSource analyst Matt Powell has revealed. With the comfortable features of sweatpants and the stylishness of jeans, jogger pants prove to be apt in showing off your expensive, limited edition basketball shoes and stylish sneakers. According to Google Trends, jogger pants has started to become increasingly searched in 2013 and has reached a peak around the end of 2014.
Choker Necklace Fashion trends are cyclical – just like this choker (necklace) which has truly dominated the 90s, and has made a comeback in the fashion industry today. As early as 1530s, choker necklaces have been used with former Queen of England, Anne Boleyn’s famous “B” necklace symbolizing wealth and rebellion. Today, plastic tattoo choker, the weirdest but most loved in the 90s, has remained pretty much as appealing in the eyes of the people as before.
Crop top This minimalistic attire which began in the 1940s regains its popularity from time to time. The crop top, or midriff to some, is designed to accentuate a woman’s hourglass shape. Crop top matched with high-rise skirt is nothing short of perfect. For those who do not have model-like figures, nothing to worry. An article from The Guardian dis-

Considered one of the trendiest hairstyles of 2015, undercut is mostly sported by men in the past. Although, various undercut styles for women are now ever-present. Celebrities like Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, and just recently, the UP Pep Squad, dared to have their temples shaved for this cool look. Aside from its stylishness, undercut is also advisable to those who are annoyed of their thick hair on summer days. A word of caution, though – managing this type of hairstyle can get be a bit of a challenge once the hair on the shaved part starts growing. So there goes five of the hottest trends of 2015! But, while we are updating you on fashion, we always feel that more than your physical appearance, it is also important to reflect on how you look from inside.

The Bulls committed numerous early errors on the first quarter that paved the way for the Red Dragons to gain a point, 1-0. After a lukewarm first quarter, however, the vengeful Bulls became vehement in the remaining quarters of the game. They scored two goals to snatch the game from the Dragons and secure the championship title.

In an interview with Player-of-the-game Ariel Dingcog, he stressed the need for athletes to veer away and never get involved with vices. Prior to the match, the Bulls had already won against the Stingers in Game 2 with a 2-point advantage, and against the Dragons in Game 3 with a 6-point margin.#

Domingo, Retward Gandeza, Danilo Macaraeg, Jr., at Elmer Bungubung. Joel B. Manangan. #
Blue Marlins...from page 30 “Kung gusto nilang maglaro, paghirapan nila. “Importante iyong teamwork tapos yung setplay. Kailangan din yung puso,” dagdag pa niya.
“Patience, sportsmanship, and good training for the athletes… and self-discipline.
32
Aliac and Temblor and also their setter, si Nadia, kung wala yun, walang communication sa loob. Sila ang key to success to this game. #

Gone Jevelyn L. Justo I want to be with you again. If only I will be given the chance to turn back the time, I will do it with my all heart. I want to go back to the time when we were just ten years old. Back when we mind no one else but each other. If only I could turn all our memories into reality. I want you to come back to me… into my arms. You were such a sweet little boy back then. Remember those times when you didn’t want me to play with others? You only wanted me to play with you. Remember those times when you taught me how to play board games? Afraid that I might have an asthma attack, you didn’t want me to play tiring games like “touch the body” and “langit lupa.” That is why you taught me how to play jackstones and snake ‘n ladders. You were such a protective friend. Remember those fights we had because I was stubborn and I insisted on playing langit lupa with our classmates? You scolded me and threatened never to talk to me again unless I promise that I will stop playing and follow what you say. But, I was just too hardheaded and proud to stop playing -- I wanted to prove to you that I can take care of myself. If only I could take back those times, I would gladly follow everything you say.
frown on your face as you try your best to keep the hoop from falling made me admire you even more. You were so frustrated that time, but you did your best… And that’s all that matters to me. We were still young then but I knew early on that you occupy a special place in my life and in my heart. That was why I was so devastated when one day, you started avoiding me. I was badly hurt and I could not help but ask God why things have to change. My hurt turned into anger and I also started to turn away from you even on occasions when we had a chance to talk. I remember one time, I saw your mom and your little brother. Your mom waved at me and your little brother ran up to me and gave me a warm hug as he muttered the word, “Ate.” I hugged your brother back but immediately, I bid them goodbye and ran away before they see the tears that started trailing down my eyes. I missed you that much. We went to the same school but we pretended not to know each other. It had been a burden for our friends to see us like that. They wanted to help us patch thing up, but my pride got in the way. I could not bear the thought that you left me hanging.
Life went on for both of us. But I would usually steal glances at you from afar. Those alone has filled my longing to get back to the way we used to
be… back when we were just ten. It was my birthday. I was silently hoping that you will remember and greet me. I waited but until the last minute of my birthday but I got no text message, no email, no call -- nothing from you. I cried my heart out that night. I was very disappointed. Not with you but with myself. I was stupid to even expect that you will remember my special day. In between hushed sobs, I recounted our memories together. I entered our class room with bulging eyes and gloomy face, the next morning. My classmates kept asking me why, but all they got were blank stares and deep breaths from me. As I reached my seat, I ducked my head on the arm chair. I feel so low, and the pain felt like someone had ripped my heart out from my body. I was hurt, and I didn’t even know why. Perhaps, I was just overreacting. But the pain was just too real. When I passed by your class room, I saw you and you smiled at me. I did not know how to react but I chose to look away and continue walking. Suddenly, I heard someone singing a birthday song and there you were with a big grin as you handed me a cute keychain. Finally, you came up to me and said “happy birthday.” As you handed me the keychain, you were apologizing. I couldn’t help but cry out of happiness. I didn’t need any explanation or reflection what happened between us. Just you and your hugs were enough. That day was my happiest. I thought we can be together again. I didn’t know that it would be the last time I will ever see you smile at me. If only I knew that something bad would happen that day, I would never have let you go from my hug.
You were such a determined person (and in a cute way). Remember the time when I taught you how to dance with the hula hoop? I know pretty well that you can’t sway your hips and you have poor body coordination. Even if I would like to laugh at you that time, I couldn’t. Seeing that serious
I know I can never have you back again and there’s nothing I can do about it. Even so, I am happy and proud that, for once in my life, I had a special person like you in my life. I thank God for you. I am really blessed that I had you in my life and that forever you will remain in my heart. Words are not enough to express how grateful I am. Thank you for being with me for almost half of my life and for taking good care of me even when fate brought us apart. Now, we are taking the same path but in different ways. I admit I still miss you but I know I will never see your smile and laughing eyes again. Little things – almost everything – remind me of you. And I can’t help but cry. These simple things mean so much to me because they take me back to those times when we were together. Acceptance is still difficult for me. I still can’t accept that you are now permanently GONE.

Maingay, siksikan, at singitan‌ parang pila kapag enrollment.
“I love you Ms. Pastillas!
Aminin!

Maraming ganyan ayaw pumasok dahil bitin daw bakasyon. Ano to? “Elmo! Elmo! I never thought my life would change So far away from what my mind displays As a voice whispers on my ears Don’t blame yourself and stop feeling guilty
A forbidden pleasure On my blood it runs
Mga bata’y pinapabayaan
Pain and anger ruined my life
Tinatapon kung saan saan
Mga insektong dumadapo’t sumisilong
When would it end I ask
Mga krimeng lumalaganap
Daanan ng bagyo’t tapunan ang lilim
Tao’y nadadamay at nagdudusa sa hirap
Pinipitas, nilalaro’t tinatapon lang din
Kailan kaya natin makakamit
Minsan siya’y binigyan ng halaga
Hustisyang dapat ipahigpit
Niregalo’t inialay sa iba
Hanggang kailan mangangarap
Kapintasa’y ginuhit at ipininta
Mga taong patuloy na naghihirap
Pinuno ng kulay at ginawang obra
It is not me but God should judge--
Nasa’n ang daang matuwid
Sa mundong kanyang pinagmulan
I forgive you my father.
Kung bawat padyak, maraming balakid
Siya’y pinamulat ng katotohanan
Nasa’n ang pinangakong pag-unlad
Hamak niyang buhay ay may hangganan
Kung protesta’t digmaa’y laganap
Uusbong, lalago’t malalanta sa lupang tinubuan.
Bulong sa hangi’y, liryo ng pagkaalipin
Everyday I weep at night As I reminisce the past I bend my knee and prayed to God Forgive this sin that hurts me a lot
Out of this world Still, he who made me live

Nakakabaliw yun ah!
Learn to manage your stress. Inhaleexhale. Kalma lang, nang di ka mukhang haggard. (At sorry pala. Baka di mo alam ang HOTS, ‘yun yung Higher Order Thinking Skills. Medyo Educ jargon kasi. )

Maging responsable sa paggamit ng allowance. Dapat marunong kang magtipid kasi maraming modules at maraming tukso. Baka iba iniisip mo, pagkain ang ibig kong sabihin. #FoodsPaMore. Just go with the flow para iwas-singko.
Don’t be afraid. Just fight for what is right.

(Hugot pa more -EIC :D). Wait! Ang OA naman yata noon. What I mean is, magdala ka ng extra ballpen para maka-graduate ka.
#10 nog ng kilay. (Literally, HAHAHA. JOKE!) I mean, babanatan And lastly, matuto kang magbanat ng buto at magsu-
