From your editor...
Hello New York District! I am Holy Cheong and I will be serving as your 2012-2013 District Bulletin Editor. A main part of my job is to create a newsletter that is informative and appealing to my readers. This is the first seasonal issue of The Empire Key. On the cover of this issue, I included group pictures of different divisions. This was one of my ideas to make the newsletter more relevant because after all, this is for you guys. In this first issue, you will find important information that all clubs must know. I hope to communicate with members through my newsletters as well as publicize the achievements of the mighty New York district. With that said, here’s to another great service year! Yours in the Spirit of Service, Holy Jia-ai Cheong New York District Bulletin Editor holycheong.editor@nydkc.org
Greetings
From your governor...
Hello Mighty New York District! My name is Daniel Ivan Lin and I am your newly elected District Governor for the 2012-2013 service year. With new leadership comes change and with change comes a new perspective. This leadership comes from caring, which I believe is the most important of the four Key Club core values. We are a family, not only because we care about our homes, schools, and communities, but because we care for each other; hence caring is our way of life. At this year’s Leadership Training Conference, I promised you that I would do whatever it takes to bring this district to greater heights. I told you that I was confident that I would be able to keep this promise, but the word I used the most was trust. Thank you for trusting me. As promised, I will make sure that our district becomes more efficient, productive, innovative, and communicative. And I hope you can see the work that has already been done to make sure that this promise will be kept. This epic year is off to a good start and I am extremely excited for what this new service year has to offer. I hope that you are excited too. Let us continue to serve those around us and together we will make Key Club a household name. Thank you all so much! Stay strong, Mighty New York District! Yours in the spirit of service, Daniel Ivan Lin New York District Governor daniellin.gov@nydkc.org
Greetings

From your treasurer...
Hello Mighty New York District! I am Annie Porfido and I am your District Treasurer for the 2012-2013 service year. I am extremely excited to be on the District Board and to be able to serve the New York District Key Club. The school year is coming to an end but that does not mean Key Club is ending. There is always time to serve the community and hold more fundraising events! If you have difficulty thinking of fundraising ideas, refer to the district website or Key Club international website. Also on the district website is the fundraising report form (FRF) which must be filled out after every fundraising event and sent to me. I will then be able to add the fundraiser onto our District Totals and it will count towards the New York district. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns! I look forward to working with everyone.
Yours in the spirit of service, Annie Porfido New York District Treasurer annieporfido.treas@nydkc.org

From your executive assistant...
Hello Mighty New York District! Let me begin by telling you a little bit about myself. I am currently a junior and I attend the High School for Math, Science, and Engineering at the City College of New York. I have devoted myself to my home club ever since freshman year, and I couldn't be more ecstatic to move a step up and commit myself to the great New York District Key Club. Mother Teresa once said, "Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier." I think that's kind of what Key Club's mission is. Spreading service everywhere we go. Letting no one ever come to us without leaving happier. It's funny, because most of the time, I'm the one leaving happier. Service is rewarding. It helps others as well as make you feel good. If Key Club stands for caring as a way of life, how could you NOT join it? This year, I plan on doing exactly what every other Key Clubber does: providing service. As one of the Executive Assistants, I will do my best to work diligently with Emily and Governor Daniel in hopes of making a smooth and successful Key Club year! Using my qualifications such as organization, communication, and creativity skills, I will serve as the District Governor's right hand and be always willing and enthusiastic in helping him with anything he needs. Yours in the spirit of service, Tina Lee New York District Executive Assistant tinalee.ea@nydkc.org

Spring Board Meeting We, the newly elected 2012-2013 District Board had our first Board Meeting at the YMCA Greenkill camp. During the three days, we participated in teambuilding and bonding activities which included possible real life scenarios that needed teamwork to overcome. At night we stayed up doing work till the morning, roasted marshmallows on tree branches, and played icebreaker games in the rain. This was an incredible experience but where there was fun, there was business. At this board meeting we discussed and finalized important topics such as committees, district goals, projects, and of course, newsletters. Our District Secretary Amber Lee took minutes of our meeting which can be found here: Minutes

Service Spotlights Toddler Olympics Bayside High School Key Club and Queens College Circle K in New York raised over $350 and increased awareness for the Eliminate Project by hosting the first ever Toddler Olympics on May 6th, 2012. Children from ages 2 to 6 could run through various obstacle courses (with the mother's help) or go to the activities table & get tattoos, coloring pages, or pictures with Bayside's mascot. Following the obstacle courses, families went to the auditorium for an award ceremony and an Eliminate Project presentation. SLP subcommittee members Erika Lim, Key Club International, and Rickie Santer, Circle K International, spoke about Kiwanis' worldwide campaign to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus by 2015 and showed two clips about the project. Then, every participant was given a medal and a goodie bag, which not only included treats but an Eliminate Pocket Guide! The purpose of this event wasn't just to fundraise money for the Eliminate Project but to raise awareness to the community and bring mothers and children one step closer while having fun at the same time! Erika Lim, President of Bayside High School Key Club Division 8 Memorial Day Parade Baldwin Key Club was invited to accompany the Memorial Day parade to distribute flags and programs. We met at 8:30 AM wearing Key Club shirts, ready for action. Next, we crossed the street en masse to find the flags. Each of the elementary school principals had flags; we were to use the extra. We tracked down each of the principals and introduced ourselves while picking up other Key Clubbers along the way. At 9:35 AM, I began a final run down of each of the schools. The parade was scheduled to begin at ten, so I wanted to obtain all of the flags and bring them across the street to Kiwanis because we planned to march and distribute simultaneously. Just as we got our first box of flags, I received a call from the other side of the street. The parade was starting fifteen minutes ahead of schedule. We adjusted our hand positions on the flags, got ready, and took off at a dead run. On the other side, we met up with our Kiwanis, other Key Clubbers and a member from Circle K. We quickly loaded the trunk with programs and flags, falling into step behind the car. We walked along the route behind the car, giving out flags and programs to everyone. When we ran out, we took more out of the trunk, and when those ran out, we marched all in a row down to the end of the route. With no rain, it was a great experience. Kyle Seipp, President of Baldwin Key Club Division 7
March of Dimes Edward R. Murrow’s key club attended the March of Dimes walk in Manhattan. We met up at the Coney Island train station and took the train as a group to the starting point of the walk. The walk took two and a half hours to complete but time flew by because we had such a good time meeting other people from other schools. During the walk, we proudly displayed our new banner made by fellow key clubbers. When we reached the finish line we felt a refreshing feeling of success. We had made a difference. We saw other key clubs at the finish line and this gave me a strong sense of pride as a key clubber. Iris Li, Edward R. Murrow High School Division 9 Puppetry Arts Festival The Puppetry Arts Festival was a recurring festival to raise money for the organization to continue. It was held on June 2, 2012 in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This event included activities such as puppet shows and sing-alongs. Each activity costed $2 and all the money was donated to future performers and programs that will keep the organization going. In this event, the lack of volunteers gave us a variety of jobs. One station was the cookie decorating station; the sugar cookies were donated by a kind bakery nearby. We made cool designs with vanilla/chocolate frosting on the cookies. The children then decorated them by using candies such as jelly beans and gummy bears. Their prize was to enjoy the treat they had made. Even Darth Vader and his crew came to support this event and played a game of golf! At the Bounce House, many children jumped in there and had so much fun that they didn’t want to come out. At the end of the day, the volunteers had to have some fun as well... so we bounced in the bounce house for five minutes. A lot of the food was left over. Large bags of popcorn were left over and Tim jokingly said “Bring it to the movies tonight”. As tempting as the offer sounded, we didn’t take it but settled with the cookies we made. At the end of this long and sunny day, we had to clean up. It was quite a workout to lift all the tables, chairs, and closing the tents. Helen Ho from my club said, “It was crazy fun, but I almost died from the heat.” Nabil Faizullah also commented, “This festival took me by surprise. I never realized how much fun it would be. Even though I was exhausted in the end, it was an enriching experience!” Despite the dreary, wet morning to the extremely hot weather in the afternoon where we all tanned, it was a pleasant event to see all the children smile as they walked the streets of the festival. Katie Xue and Christine Lim, Bronx Science Key Club Division 11
Governor’s Project Hello Mighty New York District, Each year, the District Governor designates what is known as the Governor’s Project, an area or category of service outreach that he or she chooses to focus on for the service year. This year’s Governor’s Project is called “Keys to Accessibility,” which aims to help the elderly and those with disabilities, two extremely important components of our society. The goal for this year’s Governor’s Project is 5,000 service hours and what better than to be able to celebrate this achievement than at the 65 th Annual Leadership Training Conference in 2013. Work hard and be creative, but most importantly have fun. I look forward to hearing about your service projects throughout this year. For more information about “Keys to Accessibility,” please visit the district website at www.nydkc.org. Thank you so much!

International Projects and Programs To all members of the mighty New York District Key Club, The International Projects Committee for the 2012 – 2013 service year is up and running. The three district projects for this year are March of Dimes, UNICEF, and The Children’s Miracle Network. This year the district is striving for bigger and better things, therefore each key clubber must put both feet forward in conducting as much service towards these charities as possible to not only meet, but to surpass the district goals. March of Dimes is an amazing organization that has a mission of preventing premature birth, birth defects, infant mortality and improving the overall health of all babies. Composed of many volunteers, researchers, educators, outreach workers, and advocates, they who work together to carry out their mission of March of Dimes through community services, education, advocacy, and research to save babies’ lives. The district goal for March of Dimes is $15,000 as well as 15,000 service hours UNICEF is an international organization that is even mandated by the United Nations to advocate for the protection of Children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. This includes child survival and development, providing basic education with gender equality, providing treatment to HIV/AIDS infected children, and to better a policy of advocacy and partnership. The entirety of this organization is based on good practices and developing a relationship not only with the people they are helping but also the volunteers and donors. The district goal for UNICEF is $50,000 as well as 25,000 service hours The Children’s Miracle Network is a international organization with an outstanding mission. Their goal is to actively supply and improve the health care for millions of young individuals much like yourselves, all around the world. By generating funds and awareness, the Children’s Miracle Network is now in over 170 hospitals nationwide. In generating not only hours of service but also donations you are impacting young lives who are battling every type of childhood illness and injury by giving them health and happiness. The district goal for the Children’s Miracle Network is $15,000 as well as 10,000 service hours. For all three of the above charities it is up to the mighty key clubbers of the New York District to come forth and provide as much service as possible. The service ideas are endless! Yours in the Sprit of Service, Alexandria Mandriota Lieutenant Governor of Division 3 International Projects and Programs Committee Chair
International Convention New York District attended the 2012 International Convention (ICON)! This year ICON was held at the Walt Disney World Hilton Resort in Orlando, Florida. The trip was from July 1—July 8. Key Clubbers from all over got to enjoy the Disney experience and meet other members! In addition to the fun, there were four days of the convention where sixty-four members represented the New York District. Each year, Key Clubbers from around the world join together to celebrate not only the merits of this great organization, but to celebrate the love and happiness shared by the most important people in it - the members. This year close to two thousand Key Clubbers joined together to bond with one another, share service ideas, fundraise, and have an experience of a lifetime. Many members came knowing only those from their district and left with friends from districts all across the North American continent. Key Clubbers sat through caucuses as they focused on selecting those candidates they believed were the most capable of serving on the international board, danced and donated for The Eliminate Project, and sat through hours of modest debating at House of Delegates. Little did some members know of the experience they would have at this great celebration of the world's largest and best high school service organization. Thus, this year's International Convention in the beautiful city of Orlando was nothing short of magical and definitely one that will never be forgotten. See you next year in our nation's capital, Washington D.C.!
At the International Convention, key clubbers got to partake in the voting of the International Board. Each International Trustee is assigned districts. Our trustee is Cecelia Ferguson from the Florida district and our sister districts are Capital and Ohio.
Daniel Ivan Lin New York District Governor
Congratulations to Jack Vielhauer, from Ogdensburg Free Academy, representing the New York District in his successful run for International Trustee. Dear New York District Key Clubbers, I would like to take the time to thank you so much for the encouragement and support that you had given me to run for Key Club International Trustee for the 2012-2013 service year. I am humbled and gracious for being able to represent such an amazing district on the International level. As you have recently heard, I was elected to serve as International Trustee, but I am not losing sight of what the club level means to me. My goals are here to include you and make your experience even more exciting! I hope to increase communication among clubs, divisions, districts and overall International. I plan to create educational resources for clubs, divisions and districts as a whole to help guide them as they begin the new service year with the positions they had been elected or appointed to. I want the club levels to be on the same level as the international level. Everyone in Key Club is a leader, and they can't show leadership without knowledge. Everyday, no matter your position in Key Club, you are a leader! I would also like to take the time to thank Mrs. Frank, Mr. Reagan, Ms. Reed, all NYDKC Administrators, and my family for everything thing they have done for me, they are truly the main reasons why I am where I am today! And again I want to thank you, New York District Key Clubbers, for believing in me! Remember: We are DELTA, we are the change in the world! Jack Vielhauer International Trustee
