A Word from Your Editor Greetings New York District! I had an amazing time at ICON and absolutely loved meeting all of you guys!! Now it’s time to gear up for a new school year and LTC which is closer than you think. As editor, I am responsible for grading Lieutenant Governor Newsletters, keeping a newsletter log, and creating what you are currently reading, the Empire Key (distributed every two months)! I would love it if club editors contacted me with any questions they might have about graphic standards or anything at all. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Governor’s Update Hello NYDKC! I hope you are reading this newsletter in good health and spirit; and why wouldn’t you? It’s summer! I believe that summer is one of the most critical times of the year for Key Club. It gives us the opportunity to plan for the upcoming year and potentially participate in some fun summer service or fundraising events with your club or division. Since the last edition of the Empire Key, the New York District has attending Key Club International Convention in Atlanta, GA, held our Summer Board Meeting, worked with District Committees on resource development, and been assigned our new International Trustee. I would like to quickly welcome Key Club International Trustee JoJo Saunders, who hails from Washington state in the Pacific Northwest District of Key Club, to our New York District family. JoJo is an incredibly dedicated and talented Key Clubber who will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to us this year. We also said goodbye and thanks to Anastasia Slepukhova, who served our District as our International Trustee for the 2015-2016 service year. Anastasia went above and beyond her duty to help make our year run more smoothly, and she is an amazing friend to so many members of our District, whom she went out of her way to befriend and interact with like few other Trustees have done. At ICON, our three candidates for office were absolutely incredible. While the cards didn’t necessarily fall perfectly for all of them, I am incredibly proud of all of them. Clifford Young ran an inspiring campaign for International President (IP), and although he was not elected IP, he was elected to a second term as an International Trustee. Daniel Suh was absolutely amazing and has been elected to serve Key Club as a Trustee as well. Gisselle Rodriguez-Benitez ran an awesome campaign for Trustee and, although she came up a little bit short, has agreed to serve the New York District as our Division Liaison, reaching out to our vacant Divisions this year. 6

…Governor’s Update cont. On to District news, we are working very hard to make the summer productive and useful. Come September, we will have a lot of exciting things in store for our District, including plans for District-wide fundraisers, new resources, and hopefully a completed New York District Key Club App. If you have any questions throughout the year or would like to suggest any improvements for our year, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I love hearing from Key Clubbers from all corners of New York, and it inspires me each time I get to interact with another Key Clubber who dedicates so much to serve his/her home, school, and community. I can’t wait to see many of you during Fall Rally season. Enjoy all that you have planned for the rest of the summer, and happy Key Clubbing! Yours in Service, Matt Garber District Governor

Executive Assistant’s Update Hi New York District Beavers! I hope everyone's summer was a lot of fun with service! Remember to report all of your fun activities and events. The last few months I have been helping your Lieutenant Governor's with divisional planning, events, and other projects. They have been working hard and can't wait for September to see club events pick up. I saw their excitement to help you at International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. They attended workshops, bonded with each other all while growing as a Key Clubber. To end the last few months, I had the opportunity to attend Kamp Kiwanis as a Counselor-in- Training. Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at providing fun, physical exercise and adventure. It strives to afford opportunities to participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play. The program at Kamp Kiwanis is designed to mainstream all children, including up to 20 each session with special needs. It is non-competitive with emphasis on group and team building. No activity is forced, but all are encouraged. I loved seeing all the kids grow to find themselves and each other. It was an amazing experience and at the end of the week was hard to leave. If you ever need anything always feel free to reach out to me at (717) 8565417! Yours in service and passion, Alexis Warren Executive Assistant Contact me at: alexiswarren.ea@nydkc.org

Executive Assistant’s Update Hey Fellow New York District Key Clubbers, It’s been a great experience being a part of the board! So far, I have created on Fall Rally Meeting guide which will help the Lieutenant Governors plan their fall rallies. I have created the second guide which will be sent out after Matt and I confirm the fall rally dates. I have also been working with Webmaster Kevin on the app. I have made an outline of our app which will allow for Kevin to code the app. I have also been working with Kevin on LTC awards. We have been trying to digitalize the awards to make it easier for members to apply. The district board has many great plans for this upcoming service year and we are all looking forward to serving all of you. Secretary’s Update Hello New York District Key Club! Firstly, I hope you are doing well. School is finally out and you probably have many summer engagements to tend to, but remember to stay active within your club and division! Attending events and meetings are both very important, and the Key Club spirit of service should be strong all year round. Summer means that your club members will have more time to spend with Key Club, so keep service ideas fresh and creative: hold fundraisers through a lemonade stand, barbeque, or sports tournament. That said, the popularity of summer events means that form submission matters even more than usual. We definitely don’t want to miss out on documenting the awesome service hours performed, so make sure that your club secretary is staying on top of those forms. Be sure to fill the MRF and ERF out completely and carefully: if you misspell an email or school name, your LTG may not receive a confirmation email and the risk of your submission going undocumented results. The ERF in particular is extremely important at this time and should be top priority for your club if your club hasn’t submitted it yet. It is due on September 30, but I need the submission as soon as possible since I am currently compiling the District Directory, a directory of all the clubs in the New York district. Onto what I’ve been up to: ICON was such an awesome experience and I had a great time meeting those of you who attended. We had so much fun and I’m so grateful to have heard so many inspiring words at the convention. After attending the city Divisional Training Conference, I also have distributed a Secretary’s Workshop to all of the Lt.Gs, which I encourage you to check out if you are a current or aspiring Club Secretary.

…Secretary’s Update cont. Since it’s summer, creation of the New York District App (a huge part of my platform while running for District Secretary) is underway, and it will have a Secretary’s Section where the Club Secretary can directly fill out the MRF and ERF on their phones. I believe that this will make things much more efficient for secretaries, so please look forward to it. Happy Key Clubbing!

Treasurer’s Update Hello New York District Key Clubbers! I hope all of you are having an amazing summer! For those of you who don’t know, my name is Cynthia Jiang and I am your New York District Treasurer for the 2016-2017 service year! As many of you know, we are continuing FRFs that no longer require you to submit formal proofs. Instead, the process is much more convenient, providing your Club Advisor, Lieutenant Governor, and Club Treasurer with an e-mail confirmation. With that said, I want to encourage all clubs to fill out the FRF as soon as an event has taken place. If you ever need a charity to fundraise for, feel free to check out our Governor’s Project - Voices for the Blind - and our new District Project - Icing Smiles. We also have our Kiwanis Charities - Kamp Kiwanis, Kamp Pediatric Trauma Center, and Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation. Submissions in the summer are less frequent so take this time to double check that all your paperwork is up to date. Feel free to reach out to me to see which fundraisers your club has submitted an FRF for. As many of you know, once the school year begins, clubs will be working to submit club dues. It is never too early to start collecting dues! Start promoting Key Club in the summer and encouraging non-club members to come to summer events to get a sense of what it is like to be a part of Key Club. I will be releasing a tutorial video in the beginning of the school year to guide clubs on how to submit dues online. In addition, I will be reaching out to club treasurers, once all the ERFs have been submitted, to make sure they understand what the process is like so that they can better assist their home clubs.

Webmaster’s Update Hey New York District Key Clubbers, I hope y’all are having a great summer! As you all may know, the 2016 Key Club International Convention has elapsed and our new international board has been elected. At the convention, I’ve met Key Clubbers from all around the world. It was amazing to see Key Clubbers from each district express their Key Club pride and culture through the props they wore and their energetic personalities. Attending this convention was a life changing experience and I would highly encourage y’all to go next year! Over the past two weeks, I have been working on the New York District Website and have improved it in different ways. Ranging from organizing the website to adding new content. The website should be well updated and you should easily be able draw new information from it! Right now, I am redesigning the Leadership Training Conference page and creating an Awards page for the district website. The LTC page would most likely come out the first week of August! So be on the lookout for a new LTC page at nydkc.org. Also if you have any suggestions for the district website, please leave a comment in the textbox on the website. Another thing I would like to point out about the New York District Website is that there’s a service spotlight page where I post up spotlights of recent events that Key Clubbers have attended. This is a great way to promote others to do service and you’ll never know, someone might recognize you and call you out! If you have a service spotlight that you would like to have on the website, please email me a blurb of the event and a photo at kevinyin.tech@nydkc.org!

…Webmaster’s Update cont. For the New York District Application, I have started working on app and I will continue to do so. I’m currently trying to find a way to incorporate the MRF and the ERF to the app so that secretaries and treasurers would have an easier way to access these forms on their phone. Hopefully the app will be released early September. If not, I’ll do my best to have the app released as soon as possible! Hope everyone continues to have a great summer! A Word from Your Int’l Trustee Hello Key Clubbers! My name is JoJo Saunders, and I’m honored to be serving the New York, Nebraska-Iowa, and California-Nevada- Hawaii KIWIN’S Districts this year as an International Trustee. A little bit about myself, I come from the Pacific Northwest District, where I served as District Editor last year. Graphic Design, Photography, and Videography are some of my biggest hobbies, and I was elated to be able to serve the organization I love by doing some of the things I love as well. Besides that I’m a huge coffee addict, with a place for Avatar: The Last Airbender in my heart. As a trustee, my job consists of providing assistance to the governors and the board that I serve, while acting as a liaison from the international level to the district level. The international board focuses on tackling on issues that our entire organization faces, interpreting the Guidebook, and informing districts about how the International level is performing. My goals as a trustee focus on helping streamline resources Key Club provides, in order to ensure that members can access resources that they need faster, while also working with the districts I’d be assigned too to develop stronger sister district connections. These goals are meant to help ease the process for members in terms of educating Key Clubbers, while also encouraging different districts to learn from each other and collaborate with one another. Of course, I am always here for any of you that need me! If you have any questions about international or just want to talk, feel free to contact me! Preferred Charities Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has raised more than $5 billion— most of it $1 at a time—for 170 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada, which, in turn, use the money where it’s needed the most. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment, and pay for uncompensated care, all to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. Our mission: We increase funds and awareness for local children’s hospitals. Our vision: Together we save kids’ lives. Right now there’s a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital working to save the lives of kids in your community. In fact, 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute — that's one child every second. Some are battling cancer. Some are suffering from a traumatic injury. Others require constant care because they were born too early, or with a genetic disease. Regardless of why the kids are there, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals always have their doors open.

March of Dimes President Franklin Roosevelt's personal struggle with polio led him to create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at a time when polio was on the rise. Better known as the March of Dimes, the foundation established a polio patient aid program and funded research for vaccines developed by Jonas Salk, MD and Albert Sabin, MD. These vaccines effectively ended epidemic polio in the United States. Its original mission accomplished, the foundation turned its focus to preventing birth defects and infant mortality. The March of Dimes has led the way to discover the genetic causes of birth defects, to promote newborn screening, and to educate medical professionals and the public about best practices for healthy pregnancy. We have supported research for surfactant therapy to treat respiratory distress and helped initiate the system of regional neonatal intensive care for premature and sick babies. Our recent Folic Acid Campaign achieved a dramatic reduction in the incidence of neural tube defects, birth defects of the brain and spine.

UNICEF For 15 years, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were a guiding force on many issues affecting the lives of children, young people and their families. Over this time, tremendous progress was made in reducing preventable child deaths, getting more children into schools (including both girls and boys), reducing extreme poverty and in ensuring more people have access to safe water and nutritious food. However, progress has been uneven and many of the most pressing issues for the world -including addressing inequalities, promoting inclusive economic growth, protecting children from violence and combating climate change -- were not adequately covered in the MDGs. 18

District Project Icing Smiles Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. We understand that the simple things, like a birthday cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness. Our goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time.

Memories have magical powers. Long after the cake is gone, the memories linger – memories of the kindness of a stranger, of the art of the design, of the sweet smells of a special treat, of the smiles and laughs, of a normal childhood experience so often stolen from these children. These memories are why we say, “It is so much more than a cake.”

Governor’s Project Voices for the Blind Voices for the Blind is all about empowering blind and visually impaired children. It is meant to promote education, leadership, and confidence, with the goal of allowing more and more blind children to take an active and integrated role in society. Camp Abilities are summer camps for blind children that focus on adapted sports, interaction, and confidence building. Started in Brockport, NY, the number of individually run camps has expanded to four camps in New York and 26 camps in six different nations in total. 19

Eliminate Project UNICEF and its partners have combated maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) across the globe through education, outreach, and mass immunization drives. In addition to delivering tetanus vaccines to even the remotest areas by any means necessary — including on horseback and even on foot — UNICEF has trained traditional midwives and birth attendants in safe birthing practices and distributed safe birthing kits. To help stem the tide of MNT, UNICEF has also supported prenatal care and a wide range of other maternal and newborn health services. Since 1999, UNICEF and its partners have immunized nearly 100 million women with two or more doses of the vaccine and eliminated the disease in 39 countries. Countries that have recently validated the elimination of MNT include Sierra Leone, Gabon, Laos and Madagascar. MNT still remains a deadly threat in 20 countries.

Thirst Project

We are the Key Club International Service Partner. Our mission is simple: Build a socially-conscious generation of young people who END the global water crisis. We do this by educating students about it and activating them to rock the clean water cause & build real water projects all over the world. Why Water? Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than AIDS, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis. By providing a community with safe drinking water, disease rates can drop by up to 88% virtually overnight! Child mortality rates can drop up to 90%- overnight! Clean water also plays an incredibly critical role in effectively treating and managing HIV/AIDS in rural communities. Swaziland, for example, has the single-highest-density population of HIV/AIDS in the world. For a person with HIV/AIDS, even if you have access to medical treatment or antiretroviral medication, but are still forced to drink dirty water from contaminated sources, the diseases in the water you drink will actually kill you faster than AIDS itself. 20

The coed camp accepts children ages 8 through 14; younger and older ages are considered with special approval. The camp has a capacity of 130 campers with 20 special needs campers per week. The staff/camper ratio is one to eight. Lower ratios are provided when needed. The camp is basically handicapped accessible.

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center The New York District of Kiwanis’s Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center program provides lifesaving training, equipment, and education to prevent pediatric trauma. Every year, more children die from unintentional injuries than all childhood diseases combined. Trauma claims the lives of 25,000 children each year. Another 120,000 youngsters are permanently disabled. It doesn't have to be that way. With proper, prompt care, about 25 percent of the deaths and disabilities could be prevented or reduced. Saving children's lives requires equipment and training as is provided by Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Centers. KPTC works with, and trains, prehospital care providers such as paramedics and emergency medical technicians for pediatric emergency care. Additionally, KPTC offers safety programs to prevent accidents before they happen. It has centers on Long Island, in Albany, and in Buffalo.

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease The Lyme disease problem was brought to Kiwanis' attention during 2000-01 when New Founon

York District Gov. John Gridley vowed to do something to help children afflicted with this terrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately, many insurance companies don’t pay for the treatment, which is extremely expensive. Our support is funded through donations from Kiwanis Clubs and individuals and channeled into the Pediatric Lyme Disease Fund. Just this winter, KPLD provided a grant of over $20,000 to one young New Yorker afflicted by the disease. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by the deer tick. It is a scary possibility to consider for New York State residents who enjoy spending time outside during the summer months. Lyme disease may affect the brain in many ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue. 21

Youth Opportunities Fund What is it? The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through gifts to the G. Harold Martin Fellowships. YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world.

What you need to know: 

YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members.

There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST.

Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. There is one funding cycle for YOF grants per year. Applications received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST are reviewed by the Key Club International YOF committee at their November meeting. Funding notifications are mailed no later than January first each year.

Applicants must use the current YOF grant application. Previous years' applications will not be accepted.

Guidelines for filing the application are also listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies.

ICON 2016 My first ever International Convention was about a month ago. I cannot believe the number of connections I made. From international officers to first timers like me, everyone was so friendly and welcoming! ICON was a time where I was surrounded by like-minded peers who truly believed in the purpose of Key Club--- helping others. It was a great opportunity to meet Key Clubbers from all over the world and make new friends you’ll have for a lifetime! At the closing ceremony there were many tears as everyone said goodbye to their new friends. The Conference opened up a whole new side of Key Club I didn’t even know could exist. I really hope I will be able to attend next year and you should too!

Last but not least, a thank you to a special group from the Kiwanis Family… the North Shore Key Club and parents Tracy Mastakouris and Anna Sharkey, who made the 400 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that were at all rest stops.” Julia Salat North Shore High School Advisor “The North Shore Builders finishes another year of service 2016. “Hand & Hand” with the NS Key Club, they have won accolades as a distinguished club in New York State for their service to the community. Pictured are club members at the end of the year celebration, and the officers who were presented with certificates for outstanding service. Key Clubbers James Mastakouris and Robert Sharkey were also on hand for this presentation. They also spoke to the eighth graders and encouraged them to join Key Club in September. The North Shore Kiwanis Club is the sponsor of this dynamic club and is very proud of their fine accomplishments.” Julia Salat NorthShore High School Advisor 25
