A word from your Bulletin Editor Hello NYDKC! I hope you are all enjoying this year’s holiday season! Even without the snow and cold weather, this time of the year is an extremely busy one for Key Club. There are so many possible service events; from holding Thanksgiving food drives to supporting Toys 4 Tots, Key Clubbers do it all. I was so inspired and moved by the amazing service spotlights many of you submitted. It is because of Key Clubbers like you that so many people are able to enjoy their holidays. This issue of the Empire Key focuses a lot about all of your efforts during the holiday season, so take a minute to read through the wonderful actions of your peers, and feel proud of all that you have accomplished this year. Governor’s Update Hello New York District Key Clubbers! I hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas and are having a great holiday break! The amazing fundraising and service activities that you have participated in during the holdiays was incredible, and it makes me feel so humbled to serve as your Governor. I truly wanted to thank you for all that you have done so far, and it excites me to think of what the future holds in the remainder of this service year! Speaking of the remainder of the service year, what better way to celebrate all of your hard work than the Leadership Training Conference? For those of you who do not know, the Leadership Training Conference is March 18th-20th, 2016 at the Desmond Hotel in Albany. This is an event in which 800 Key Clubbers from all over the state gather to celebrate this past service year’s achievements, attend informative workshops about different charities and officer positions, elect the 2016-2017 New York District Board, and meet Key Clubbers from across the state. If this sounds like an amazing experience to you, then check out the LTC page on www.nydkc.org where you can find registration, award information, the elections packet, and the LTG promotional video! Regarding dues, keep in mind that your club can continue to submit dues as you gain more members so that the New York District can properly track how many members we have. Governor’s Project Update Hello New York District Key Clubbers! This year, New York District Key Club has partnered with a nonprofit organization called The Giving Circle for my Governor’s Project “Hunger”. The Giving Circle is based out of Saratoga, New York and works to combat hunger, the water crisis, and provide education as well as disaster relief both nationally and internationally. New York District Key Club has decided to partner with this organization to raise $10,000 for a farm in Uganda that will be named “The New York District Key Club Farm.” This farm will feed the children who live in the local orphanage and attend the school, in addition to all of the inhabitants of the town. It will also provide jobs for the members of the community to sell the goods in the local market. I spoke with the founder of The Giving Circle, Mark Bertrand, and he said that this farm is a matter of life or death for the people living in this community. We are not only saving the lives of people that currently live there, but we are impacting generations of individuals. Kids that used to have to stay home from school to work for food will now be able to gain an education and achieve their career aspirations, which will impact their future family and so on. I don’t know about you, but I feel incredibly excited and empowered that we have the opportunity to make this kind of impact. That being said, I hope that you will join the New York District in taking advantage of this opportunity by participating in the District Wide T-Shirt Fundraiser. A word from your International Trustee Happy winter New York Key Clubbers! Wow! As we welcome a New Year, we have the opportunity to challenge ourselves wit h New Year’s resolutions! I know mine will entail the spending more time at the gym, doing more hands-on service and trying to cut down on Cranberry Ginger Ale (I seriously cannot get enough of this stuff!) This is also a great time for your clubs and officers to evaluate the performance of your clubs and make some New Year’s resolutions. Goal setting is an important skill that distinguishes high performing clubs and makes the most successful leaders. With a good few months left under your terms, make sure to make the most out of them and use this time to make any necessary changes that are hindering your clubs from reach their full potential. After you sit down with your officers and create those goals, be sure to share them with your club, Faculty Advisor, Kiwanis Club and your school! Sharing a goal with others is one of the best ways to motivate yourself and make yourself accountable for achieving it (You can even share your goals for the new year with me!) Another important topic I want to discuss this month is the upcoming officer elections. Leaders help other leads grow, so if you know an underclassman that has the potential for leadership but is lacking the confidence; give them the gentle push they need. My Division’s Lt.Governor provided me with the encouragement to run for an office my freshman year, and although I lost, it was the best decisions I made in my high school career as it got me more involved in Key Club. However, if you have been exposed to Key Club and already have a potential position in mind for what you want to run for, I encourage you to take a step back and think just once more. Ask yourself these questions: Why am I running? Do I have a vision and a strong work ethic that will bring up my club/division/district next year? Will this position challenge and grow me as a leader? Do I have the time to commit to this position and excel to its highest expectations? Have I observed and talked to someone who currently holds the position I want to run for? Do my parents/school/club support me? I don’t expect you to have a “Yes” for each of these questions, but as long as you have taken them into consideration before you run for office, you should be set! Know that the outcomes of the elections don’t determine the kind of servant leader you are or your competency as a person. I have lost three elections within my time in Key Club, and with every loss came an abundance of new knowledge about myself, that looking back now makes me the kind of servant leader that I am. It’s okay to loose and its okay to win! Finally, I want to wish everyone an extraordinary holiday season! You have all been working so hard the past few months in serving your communities, be sure to take some time during this winter break to relax and reflect on an amazing journey you have been a part of thus far as a servant leader in this awesome organization we call Key Club. Secretary’s Update Hello New York District Key Club! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and a relaxing break! In the month of November I was able to complete the District Directory. This directory, containing the information that is submitted through Election Report Forms, is sent out to the District Board and Adult Committee. By compiling this directory, I can ensure that the members of the district board are able to contact the board members of each club. The directory contains the information from all Election Report Forms submitted on or before the September 27th deadline. Additionally, I will be putting out addendums containing the information from the late Election Report Form submissions. Currently, 134 clubs have submitted their Election Report Forms. If your club has not submitted its ERF yet, please do so as soon as possible. Even though the deadline for submission has passed, the new submissions will be compiled and sent out to the District Board Members in an addendum, as stated above. In regards to Monthly Report Forms, we have 116 September submissions, 108 October submissions, and 90 November submissions. MRFs are due on the tenth of every month, so please do your best to submit your forms on time! I am proud to say that out of the District service hour goal of 90,000 hours, our district has already served for 59,246.68 hours. This total, which does not include service hours from December, currently leaves us a little more than 30,000 hours short of our goal. I truly believe that 90,000 hours can be reached and exceeded by Leadership Training Conference. In order to make this a reality, make sure you report all your events and service hours accurately on the Monthly Report Form! Treasurer’s Update Hey Mighty New York District! I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday! We are almost halfway done with this schools year and we are three-quarters of the way done with this service year. I would first like to thank you all for your amazing work this year. There are two things I want to talk about: FRFs and dues. There are less than three months left until LTC, which means there are less than three months to reach our fundraising goal. Right now, we are at around $60,000 and our fundraising goal is $100,000. If there are any fundraisers your club did after our past LTC (March 2015), please fill out an FRF at this time. While choosing a charity to support, please consider choosing one of our district-supported charities. For more information on these charities, you may contact your lieutenant governor or me. We will be able to tell you which charity has the least amount raised. Additionally, if you need a few fundraising ideas, I will be happy to share those as well. I am proud of all you hard work so far in planning, and running these fundraisers. Many of you have already submitted dues. As most of you know, the dues deadline was November 30th, 2015. For the clubs that did not submit dues yet, your club’s status is delinquent. Dues must be paid annually and they are used to provide resources and support to our clubs. Dues were $13 this year - $6 for New York District and $7 for Key Club International. If your club received more members after you have submitted your initial dues, feel free to print out a new invoice and pay amount your club owes for the new members. I should have contacted your club if your club has not paid dues yet. If you are one of these clubs, please do so as soon as possible. If you are one of the schools that sent out dues before November 1st, you will receive an early bird patch for your club banner. Since this service year is coming to an end, underclassman may want to start thinking of running for a board position. Being a board member in the past was one of the best experiences of my life and I encourage all of you to take up the opportunity and run for a position. Executive Assistant’s Update Hello New York District Key Club! It has been a very busy end of the year at New York District Key Club. For anyone reading this who doesn’t already know, my name is Matt Garber, and I am the District Executive Assistant for the 2015-2016 service year, meaning I have the pleasure of working with and overseeing all of our Lieutenant Governors and District Committees. First off, I spent much of the last two months working on the Pen Pal program that Governor Hanna Nichols had the idea to implement. Almost a hundred Key Clubbers from around New York. Participants were paired based on their positions, ages, locations, and answers to the questions on the signup form, among a couple other pieces of information. I sent out the pairings midDecember, and so far the response has been pretty positive. Looking forward, the next few weeks and months will be spent preparing for LTC, not just for me, but for the whole board. We will be working tirelessly as a team to make this year’s conference the best possible experience for the whole district. Other than LTC preparations, most of my work will be helping our Governor with whatever she needs (as an Executive Assistant can be expected to do). I hope that everyone reading this great issue of the Empire Key, compiled by our amazing Editor, Angelica Mehta, has had an incredible holiday season and takes on the New Year with an increased inspiration for service in the incredible form that Key Club provides. The great work that Key Clubbers from my school, my home division, our great district, and Key Clubs around the world is truly inspiring and impactful for all those who experience it from all perspectives, and for that I thank you. Webmaster’s Update Hello Mighty New York District Beavers! I hope that you are doing well this winter and that you have been able to meet many new Key Clubbers this service year. These past two months have been quite the ride for me, but Key Club has constantly been there to pick me up and remind me that every day is a fresh start. Remember to check out the website; it’s a place full of resources for Key Clubbers. You can find all the Governor’s videos, Empire Key newsletters, LTC information, fundraising goals, and more. The suggestion box on the bottom is always open so you can suggest improvements. You should especially be frequenting the LTC page (www.nydkc.org/leadership-training-conference) to register for LTC. Common FAQS, elections materials, and more are all listed there for you to look through. Make sure that your club officers show the LTC vide (pinned on the website) if they haven’t already! As a side job to being District Webmaster, I also lead the District Public Relations Committee as chair. This winter, we are planning to release a resource to the district with tips for promotions and relations. It’ll include promoting on social media, keeping in touch with Kiwanians and your advisors, making posters, and more. Look forward to it! Anyways, for me, it’s all about getting ready for LTC now. The next step in my role as District Webmaster is to make sure that nothing goes wrong during the actual event, and to prepare fully for everything tech-related beforehand. It’s really been quite the adventure this year, and it’s unfortunate that the end of this service year has come so quickly. I hope to fulfill your expectations for a smoothly run LTC, and I promise you it’ll be great!

Conference/Special Projects Chair’s Update Hello NYDKC, The Leadership Training Conference (LTC) is held at the Desmond Hotel in Albany on March 18th-20th. Just to highlight some of the great things that we have done in the past at LTC, we have held Playfair, and event where all of the attendees come together to play the group ice breaker activities in order to bond with one another! Many say that this is their favorite part of the weekend. Another thing that happens is Penny Wars, which is a battle between groups of divisions to see who can donate the most pennies over the course of the weekend. Start saving up now! Also, one of the major parts of the weekend includes workshops, which are hosted by the Lieutenant Governors and District Board members. Some workshops include officer-training workshops (i.e. Secretary, Treasurer, etc.), workshops about college and Circle K opportunities, Service Project workshops, and fun, interactive workshops such as Improv Acting! I hope you all can find workshops that teach you valuable information and skills! Awards are an important recognition that any club can apply for! There are awards for Outstanding and Distinguished Key Clubbers and Board Members, awards for specific service projects and much more! As Governor Hanna mentioned in her update, the New York District would like to concentrate its efforts towards the Governor’s Project in an organization called the Giving Circle. Of course you may still support any type of hunger related organization, but this is the organization Hanna would like us to really focus on. If the New York District can raise $10,000 for the Giving circle, we will be able to purchase a farm in Uganda and have it named the “New York District Key Club Farm”. This roughly equates to each club raising $50, an easily manageable goal! 16

THE THIRST PROJECT

On November 3rd, the Voorheesville Key Club held a school-wide assembly for the Thirst Project, the world’s leading youth water activism organization. Road Warriors Maddy and Jay educated students of the world’s water crisis, which affects over 600 million people, and what the Thirst Project is doing to help in Swaziland, Africa. The Thirst Project committed in 2012 to provide all of Swaziland with clean water by 2022, and have already done much to accomplish this goal, with the help of students across the United States. After the Thirst Project presentation was finished, Voorheesville students heard from Mr. Wayne LaChappelle, the Town of New Scotland’s Commissioner of Public Works. He explained how often we waste water, and how many local people don’t have fresh, clean water to use. By providing specific statistics, Mr. LaChappelle was able to connect the water crisis to recent, local cases and provide insight on how to use water conservatively. The Eliminate Project Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces with The Eliminate Project in order to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. 60,000 infants, and many women as well, lose their lives to this disease every year. For only $1.80, a mother can receive three doses of immunization to protect herself and her future children from this deadly disease. Together, our goal is to raise $110 million for the Eliminate Project by the newly extended deadline of 2016. As of June 11th, 2015 Kiwanisfamily SLP have raised $4,604,749, which has saved over 3,350 lives. The New York District has raised $1978.79 thus far in our 2015-2016 service year! Internationally, through Trick or Treat for UNICEF, we have broken our record for the most money raised through this event, with an amazing sum of $635k. Kamp Kiwanis “Kamp Kiwanis is a program located in Taberg, New York, which provides children aged 8 to 14 (including those with special needs) with a unique camping experience. Kamp Kiwanis allows children to just be themselves, no matter what their situation, and encourages them to participate in team building exercises and activities, including boating, sports, and campfires. Kamp Kiwanis costs nothing for the children that attend. Through donations, the Kamp sponsors adults and children, allowing them to experience the program regardless of their financial position.� Visit www.kampkiwanis.org for more information!

District Charities cont. Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center “The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center is designed to help treat and protect children. It is a Kiwanis-Hospital association that was created in order to provide the funds and staff necessary to create a trauma center with extensive medical assistance and safety. Kiwanis helps to provide treatment as to meet the needs of families with children suffering from trauma (e.g., transportation). Trauma takes the lives of 25,000 children each year and leaves another 120,000 children permanently disabled. An estimated 25% of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented with proper and prompt care. Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation “Lyme Disease was brought to Kiwanis’ attention during 2000-01 New York District Kiwanis Governor John Gridley vowed to do something to help children afflicted with this terrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria, which are usually transmitted by the deer tick. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression, and marked fatigue. The spirochete which causes Lyme Disease can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial skin infection. The majority of people who are treated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long-term problems. Major Emphasis March of Dimes: “The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes was founded by our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the fight against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many grassroots volunteers. For decades, Key Club has partnered with the March of Dimers to give every baby a healthy start. Key Club members raise thousands of dollars annually through various programs, including collecting change, holding dances, and taking part in March of Dimes’ signature event, March for Babies.” So far, NYDKC has raised $923.90 for March of Dimes! WARM BEGINNINGS The 2015-2016 Kiwanis First Lady’s Project In keeping with our Governor’s Project “We Take Care of Our Own”, 2015-2016 First Lady, Helene Irvine has chosen a project near and dear to her heart. As a registered nurse, Helene sees firsthand many newborn babies leaving the hospital to go home with very little in the way of supplies & layette items. Our challenge this year is to donate basic items for newborns and new mothers who are in need. Let’s plan a fun event - a Baby Shower—yes, men invited. We can help a newborn start out his or her life in style. Suggestions are: T-shirts, receiving blankets, hats, socks, bibs, pajamas, buntings, onesies, pacifiers, baby bottles, sweaters, etc. Choose a newborn nursery in your local hospital, or to an organization in your own community that assists new mothers with their babies. A small gesture will be so important in the life of a child.

On October 17th, a handful of Averill Park Key Clubbers participated in Kiwanis’ annual “Trash Busters”. Kiwanians and Key Clubbers walked up and down some of the roads around Averill Park and picked up the trash that littered the town. Without their hard work, this trash would’ve eventually damaged the plants and animals in the town. Thanks Averill Park Kiwanis Family! Averill Park Key Club Division 17
I had the privilege of attending the Huntington Kiwanis Clubs annual “Holiday Project” this past Saturday. The community had identified 55 needy elementary students who were bussed to the Sears store on Jericho Turnpike. Three high school Key Clubs, Half Hallows Hill East and West, and Huntington, each sent 50 Key Clubbers to help the little ones shop for their Christmas needs. The needs were all clothing and shoes, no toys. Each elementary student was assigned 2-3 Key Clubbers to help him or her do their shopping. The Kiwanis club provided each elementary student with a $150 gift card. So around 8:30am 200 Key Clubbers and elementary students started their shopping. I was impressed to see the interaction between the Key Clubbers and students, with the Key Clubbers having to fit the clothes and shoes. The students did come up with a list of needs and the sizes that were needed to make it a little easier. At about 10:30 they were bussed to one of the High Schools where the Key Clubbers boxed, wrapped, and labeled the presents they had just bought. This was quite a sight with many Key Clubbers learning how to wrap for the first time. Once this was completed there was a pizza party for all and the presents were given to the organization that identified the kids. They in turn gave them to their parents for Christmas. Among all the service projects Shaker High School Key Club participates in each year, Equinox is arguably my favorite. About 100 of our members come together with other community organizations to package Thanksgiving dinners for local families struggling with poverty or homelessness. This year, Key Clubbers helped slice hundreds of pies and fill thousands of boxes with food. In total, 9469 dinners were delivered to families across the Capital Region on Thanksgiving. Equinox is one of my favorite service projects because it is hands-on, interactive, and a ton of fun. It clearly demonstrates the positive impact Key Clubbers, and volunteers in general, make on the community. When we work together, it is kind of amazing what we are capable of. The North Shore Kiwanis Club and the North Shore Key Club join hands and party hard with the St. Christopher residents. Kiwanian Santa Gary Craner and his Key Club elf Alexis Lovaglio were on hand to make the party a HO HO HO success as they give out gifts to all the children. Kiwanis President Roger Hill and Key Club President Elias Mastakouris share the spotlight with the Key Clubbers as they truly make a difference to some very special children in need. K-Kids is a student-led community service club for elementary students that teaches members the value of helping others through participation in community service projects and club activities.
Nearly 40, 000 middle and junior high students in 1,300 clubs in 18 nations contribute service to school and community while developing leadership and people skills. Builders Club members implement practical service-learning principals as they focus on supporting organizations that focus on the needs of children.
Aktion Club members in more than 200 clubs in seven nations allow adults living with disabilities to develop initiative and leadership skills through hands-on service. These adults return to the community the benefits, help, and caring they have received.
Circle K International (CKI) is the premiere university service organization in the world sponsored by Kiwanis International. With clubs on more than 550 campuses globally, programming is based upon the tenets of service, leadership, and fellowship.
