Hey Division 21 Elephants!

Welcome back to the second newsletter-for the month of May! I hope most of your AP exams have been over by now-and you have had some time to relax and take part in some Key Club events/meetings in the meantime. May and June are busy, but we got this! Keep making fundraisers, hosting service projects and more! If your new executive board has been elected, hit the ground to get running by planning a meeting before the end of the school year to ensure a successful service year! I know many clubs have probably ended meetings by now, but please do continue planning to maybe do some summer events. Community service does not stop in the summer! I have been trying to get more information on individual clubs so if you are able to, please contact me ASAP to get in touch!! If it is easier, my phone number is 315-880-5957.

Also clubs, please make sure to submit Election Report Forms and Monthly Report Forms! I have not gotten much submitted from you guys. And that's it for my May greeting!

Greetings!

Every year, the NYDKC members (Key Club members) chooses a district wide project to support. The voting had ended on May 15th, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital had the most votes- making it our District Project!

St. Jude’s goal is to advance cures and prevent pediatric catastrophic diseases through extensive research and affordable treatment. They offer medical treatment free of charge at times when healthcare is often inaccessible. They are well known for their assistance to children with cancer. No child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation

DISTRICT ENDORSED PROJECTS

The Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation is an organization that helps those who suffer from Lyme Disease, focusing on children who are impacted. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria that is usually transmitted by the deer tick. Medical treatment for children is very expensive, and this support organization is funded through donations from Kiwanis Clubs and individuals. They are also connected with the Pediatric Lyme Disease Fund, so they can take in as much donations to help children with the disease. The foundation currently has 27 active grants for children with Lyme Disease! And as of May 2014, the foundation had paid $269,000 for pediatric treatment!

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center

The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center is a clinic located in Long Island, New York that is dedicated to serving unique care for children in extreme situations (e.g. trauma injuries).

Trauma takes the lives of 25,000 children each year and leaves another 120,000 children permanently disabled. And an estimated 25% of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented with proper and prompt care. Kiwanis helps to provide treatment as to meet the needs of families with children suffering from trauma (e.g., transportation). It also serves a number of other functions, such as outreach to parents and educational programs. It is a Kiwanis-Hospital association that was created in order to provide the funds and staff necessary to create a trauma center with extensive medical assistance and safety.

Kiwanis needs Key Club’s help to reduce the number of lives cut short! Please consider supporting this charity also!!

Key Club Members promoted a school wide food drive, in which people/students donated food items such as pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter and jam!

"FM Key Club hosted a food drive for a couple weeks in which we collected specific food items requested by our local FM Food Pantry, including spaghetti, pasta sauce, raspberry preserves, peach preserves, and peanut butter. Members brought in hundreds of cans, especially thanks to a friendly competition set up by Key Club advisor Bradley Delans between his three Honors Precalculus classes. After collecting these items, members of our Key Club stayed after school to help sort, count, and package cans. This year's officers, and our three new incoming officers for next year, will be delivering the items to the Food Pantry after school on Wednesday, May 31st. This event was such a wonderful final project of the year because I saw such a huge effort from each of our members that resulted in a hugely successful food drive for a really important service in our community. Every day is a chance to change the world, and we in FM Key Club did our part this monthl The FM Food Pantry is a local food pantry that helps provide food items to those in need, within our community. Many people volunteer or donate food items there to benefit our community."

DIVISION 8!

Bayside High School Key Club: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Parade- 05/21/2023

“On May 21st, many Key Club members (and our district governor!) participated in the AAPI Parade held by the Better Chinatown organization! We had many opportunities to volunteer such as by helping with the dragon dancing or dressing in costumes like Elmo or a giant panda. Other volunteers performed small tasks like making Chinese flags that volunteers and viewers got to keep after. Everything was done to support the Asian community in light of AAPI Heritage Month. The parade began around 6th Avenue and 44th Street, then ended around 57th Street where everyone began hiking back to regroup. Besides volunteering, Key Club members also enjoyed shows. Before the parade began, event organizers from Better Chinatown were introducing many influential members of the AAPI community including Queens Congresswoman Grace Meng and ambassadors from the Philippines, Indonesia, China, and Bangladesh. The organizers also played classic Chinese songs—it was super nostalgic from just being there! it was It was definitely tiring across the board but the enthusiasm from the event organizers masked the laborious nature of the work; many people were worn out after runni dragon. If I learned anything from the parade, it’s that everyone will d back next year!”

DIVISIONALMEETINGRECAP

On Thursday, June 8th, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, I had held my first divisional meeting! Our Kiwanis Committee Representative, presidents from 4 clubs- Liverpool, Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-Dewitt and Nottingham and a club treasurer was able to attend the meeting. I was able to teach them more about Key Club in general, give district updates and reminders regarding filling out forms such as the MRF, ERF and FRF. I had also invited former LTG Yanisa Chai to give a little speech about the importance of Key Club! Each president of a club was able to give a little summary on what their club has done during the year. Near the end, we completed an online service project with Free Rice, and played some games like Skribbl.io to get to know each other better. In the meeting, everyone was able to share their goals for the service year!
