이자 한미 우호 관계의 요람이었
던 주미대한제국공사관이 미국에
서 그 역사적 가치를 공식 인정받
을 것으로 전망된다.
미국 국립공원관리청(NPS)은
7일 워싱턴DC의 주미대한제국공
사관을 국립사적지 (NRHP·National Register of Historic Places)로 지정하는 방
안에 대해 의견을 수렴한다고 관
보를 통해 밝혔다.

지난달 25일 공청회를 개최한 결 과 공사관을 국립사적지로 추천
가입할 자격도 얻는다.

공사관이 한국이 미국에 설치한
첫 상시 외교 공관으로 한국의 근
대국가 설립 노력과 관련돼 의미
가 크다고 설명했다.
또 건물 원형이 잘 보존됐다면 서 국가유산청이 2015년부터 3년
간 진행된 대규모 복원 공사를 통 해 공사관 운영 당시의 역사적 모 습과 분위기를 되살렸다고 평가 했다.
국립공원관리청은 지정 여부 를 현재 심사하고 있으며 오는 22 일까지 의견을 수렴할 예정이다.
국립사적지로 지정되면 미국 정부가 그 역사적 가치를 공식적 으로 인정한다는 의미가 있다. 또

대뉴욕지구 경기여고 동창회 산하, 경운장학회는 4월 27일 오후 1시
맨해튼에 있는 코리아 소사이어티(The Korea Society)에서‘한국전쟁 (The Korean War)’을 주제로 제14회 영어웅변대회를 화상 및 대면 하
이브리드(hybrid)로 개최했다.
참가 대상은 미 전역에 거주하는 9학년부터 12학년의 한국계와 비한
국계 고등학생이다.
이 대회에 참가한 학생들은 이미 올해 2월‘한국전쟁(The Korean
War)’을 주제로 영어 글자수 1,400자 내, 웅변길이는 4-6분의 원고를
작성하여 경운장학회로 보내, 경운장학회가 원고 심사를 하여 결선 진 출자 15명의 선정을 마쳤다. 결선 진출자들은 장학회가 진행하는 스피치 워크샵을 통해 스피치 코칭을 받은 후, 4월 27일 본선에서 경합했다. 이들 15명 중 거주지에 따 라 11명은 직접 대회장에서 대면으로, 3명은 virtual로, 1명은 recording 으로 결선을 치렀다. 특히 올해는 15명의 결선 진출자 중 4명이 비한국계 학생이었고, 대 상 등 입싱자 중에도 비 한국계 학생들이 많았다. 경운장학회는 그동안 2011년~2021년 대회 입상자들의 원고를 모아
‘Teens Speak’라는 단행본을 내어 미 전국 고등학교와 각 도서관에 배 부 했는데, 2022~2031년 대회 입상작도 단행본으로 출판할 예정 이다.

After winning World War II, the USSR and the United States rose as major world powers.
The USSR emerged from the war with a significant loss of life, increased industrialization, and control of territory in Eastern Europe, while the US had an improved economy, fewer casualties than Russia, and atomic bombs.
The United States viewedcommunism as a twisted ideology that limited freedom. To prevent post-war devastated nations from “falling” to Soviet-backed communism, they implemented “containment,” meaning they would intervene in other countries' affairs to keep communism and socialism at bay. This policy helped resist those ideologies on a global scale.
The tension between the powers of the United States and the USSR resulted in the Cold War.
The Cold War was a state of heightened tension and hostility between the world’s two major superpowers without direct military confrontation. Ideological rivalries between Western countries and the Soviet bloc led to political instability in Asian countries.
One country in which the US aided in fighting against communism was Korea. After World War II, Korea was split along the 38th parallel line of latitude. North Korean troops stormed over the 38th parallel
on June 25, 1950. American President Harry Truman ordered American troops into Korea, motivated to stop the North’s spread of communism into the South. By the end of July 1950, the North Korean troops pushed forward but they were later pushed back over the 38th parallel. The Korean War ended on July 27, 1953. The Armistice Agreement was signed which temporarily ended all fighting. A permanent peace treaty was never actually signed.
It is estimated that about 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in the war. The US was successful in containing communism during this proxy war but it ended in a stalemate meaning North and South Korea remained divided. Until this day, Korea is divided.
The Korean War is often known as the “Forgotten War.”
There was a lack of attention paid to this war compared to
other wars including the World Wars and the Vietnam War.
Due to this, its veterans often feel neglected, misunderstood, and forgotten. (4) However, the war caused devastation and people’s lives and property were destroyed.

The population of South Korea declined by about two million people but there was an additional influx of nearly 650,000 North Korean refugees. 290,000 South Koreans migrated to North Korea by force and by choice. Mortality figures are incomplete as many were missing, kidnapped, or captured in addition to the prisoners of war and underreported war deaths.
The Korean War caused significant “unforgettable” social and economic impacts.
Historically, remarriage was rare among Korean women. The women whose husbands died or were separated were forced to

The Korean War was one of the world’s most destructive wars, relative to its population.

For example, in 1991, The US finally awarded a former soldier, Hunter, full disability pay for his severe post-traumatic stress disorder. Global and personal lessons can be learned from the events of the Korean War. Intervention may be necessary to prevent further escalation and prolonged tension can lead to those escalations, which can lead to unintended aftereffects. Intervening during episodes of tension can help prevent these issues. Outside pressures and influences, like those seen in the years before the Korean War, are often detrimental. Such things can be seen on the world stage in the many acts of aggression and retaliation often due to power struggles or fear of others.
This can be extrapolated to personal circumstances in social settings, school settings, and in the workplace. As a member of Boy Scouts, I have taken on leadership roles including leading events and organizing team-building activities. Though not on the scale of those involved in the Korean War, lessons can be learned on how to lead others. Conflict can lead to hurt feelings and retaliation. This can lead to sabotage including deconstructing projects or misleading others. What seems insignificant to some, can be monumental to others. When those conflicts are ignored, they are often not forgotten by those affected. This can affect personal self-worth as well as group dynamics. Never let conflicts be overlooked, never let them be forgotten.
