The Russian Stravinsky
A Philharmonic Festival Conducted By Valery Gergiev “You cannot imagine how happy I am today,” said Igor Stravinsky when he touched Russian soil after 50 years in exile. “I have spoken Russian all my life, I think in Russian, my manner of speaking is Russian,” he said. “Maybe you cannot see it in my music at once, but it underlies it.” Hear for yourself as the New York Philharmonic and one of the most electrifying Russian maestros of our time reveal the Russian pulse inside the many masterpieces by Stravinsky.
Additional concerts, lectures, symposia, and much more to be announced. Visit nyphil.org for complete details.

György Ligeti’s only opera, Le Grand Macabre, concerns itself with nothing less than the end of the world. This surreal and darkly whimsical work is staged by Director Douglas Fitch, whose unique vision combines miniature landscapes, live animation, choreographed cameramen, and a large projection screen. Ligeti’s brilliant, delightful score ranges from interludes for automobile horns and doorbells to vocal flights of breathtaking coloratura. An endearing satire of sublime music, this fantastical piece has grown in artistic recognition to become the most performed contemporary opera. The New York Times revered Le Grand Macabre as “the biggest achievement of one of the greatest composers of our time.”
