Mahler’s New York One of the most beloved and revered composers, Gustav Mahler took the subway to work at the New York Philharmonic, where he served as the tenth Music Director between 1909 and 1911. This season, the Philharmonic invites New Yorkers to get acquainted with their fellow straphanger through Mahler’s New York, featuring his first two symphonies, the one-night-only Mahler Grooves concert, a walking tour of Mahler’s New York, and more. nyphil.org/mahlerny
Project 19 19 Commissions Celebrating the Centennial of the 19th Amendment One hundred years after American women gained the right to vote, the Philharmonic celebrates the 19th Amendment by commissioning 19 new works by women. The multi-season Project 19 launches in February 2020 with a three-week festival featuring three World Premieres plus collaborations with MetLiveArts, the Academy of American Poets, The Juilliard School, and other partners. Bluebeard’s Castle A woman wanders a forest at night desperately searching for her lover. Newlyweds Duke Bluebeard and Judith arrive at the Duke’s dark castle, each of its seven rooms more shocking than the last. The Philharmonic presents a staged production of two psychological, Expressionist one-act operas by Schoenberg (1909) and Bartók (1911). Music Director Jaap van Zweden conducts and 2018 Birgit Nilsson Prize winner Nina Stemme stars in the US Stage Premiere of this bold double-bill directed and designed by Bengt Gomér. This event will be complemented by our Sound ON series, returning this year. nyphil.org/bluebeard
Hotspots Festival The final three weeks of the season shine a light on three hotspots of classical music innovation. Berlin: where the bohemian and underground thrive. Reykjavík: where Europe’s tectonic plate meets North America’s, where Björk and Sufjan Stevens cross paths with Nico Muhly and Bryce Dessner. New York City: where leading artists from around the globe convene. The festival features World Premieres by Berlinbased Olga Neuwirth; Nico Muhly, co-founder of Reykjavík’s Bedroom Community collective; and Sarah Kirkland Snider, co-founder of the Brooklynbased New Amsterdam Records. It wouldn’t be a new-music festival without Sound ON and Nightcap, featuring the composers of these three World Premieres. It all culminates in a season finale not to be missed. nyphil.org/hotspots

YOUNG PEOPLE’S ™ CONCERTS Bring a special young person in your life to the New York Philharmonic, and we’ll help nurture a lifelong love of music and concert-going. Made famous by Leonard Bernstein, this beloved Saturday afternoon series will highlight music by women composers and premieres by students in our Very Young Composers program. All Young People’s Concerts are preceded by YPC Overtures at 12:45pm, where children can meet Philharmonic musicians, try out instruments, and listen to music by Very Young Composers. Support for Young People’s Concerts is provided by The Theodore H. Barth Foundation and The Brodsky Family Foundation. Major support for Very Young Composers is provided by Susan and Elihu Rose.
“A Composer’s Toolkit
“Music as a Change Agent
Like all builders, composers use special tools to capture their unique musical sounds and ideas. Audiences will explore how tradition and new concepts, from grand musical statements to atmospheric sounds, create a timeless art form. Featuring music by Beethoven and one of our own Very Young Composers! Jaap van Zweden conducts.
What are ways in which music can spark dialogue and enact change? Drawing on centuries of repertoire, this program will highlight composers whose works both reect and contribute to larger social issues.
