A SEASON OF BRILLIANT NIGHTS

The New York Philharmonic's 2014–15 season features more than 100 extraordinary evenings (and matinees) of the best music-making you’ll hear anywhere. Here are a few highlights:

ONLY SUBSCRIBERS CAN RESERVE THEIR SEATS NOW FOR THESE SPECIAL EVENTS. THE ART OF THE SCORE: Film Week at the Philharmonic Alec Baldwin, Artistic Advisor

La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema

YO-YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE

The Oscar-winning actress (La Vie en Rose, Midnight in Paris, Rust and Bone) stars in the U.S. Premiere of a new, fully staged production of Honegger’s dramatic masterpiece. Alan Gilbert conducts, June 10—13.

The Silk Road Ensemble and Yo-Yo Ma celebrate their 15th anniversary season by joining the New York Philharmonic for a special collaboration. Integrating musical traditions and instruments from around the world into the fabric of the symphony orchestra, the two ensembles make cross-cultural connections and showcase virtuoso performers in new world classical music.

PREMIERES

“One of the most fabulous violinists of our time ... a truly great artist” (Le Figaro) performs Brahms, Barber, Bach, and the U.S. Premiere of a new concerto for Violin and Oboe by French composer Thierry Escaich.

As the orchestra that premiered his New World Symphony, the Philharmonic has long held a close relationship with Dvorˇák, who lived in New York for three years. We celebrate this legacy December 4–13 with conductor Christoph von Dohnányi, and with performances of Dvorˇák’s chamber music masterpieces in our Saturday Matinee Concerts.

Christopher Rouse completes his tenure as The Marie-Josée Kravis Composerin-Residence with Thunderstuck, a new orchestral work to be premiered in October; the Philharmonic also performs the New York Premiere of his Flute Concerto and Iscariot. This season includes premieres of Philharmonic commissions from John Adams, Unsuk Chin, Thierry Escaich, and Peter Eötvös as well as the U.S. Premiere of a new work from Thomas Adès.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS

® Saturdays at 2:00pm

SUPER SONIC MUSIC BOX

Imagine a music box that plays something different every time you open it – a doorway into sounds you’ve never imagined and melodies you’ll never forget. Imagine the orchestra itself as a chameleon of infinite colors, a composer as a wizard transforming the sounds around us, and yourself as the greatest transformer of all, making meaning of everything you hear. Discover the super sounding music box that is the New York Philharmonic. November 15, 2014 MELODY TRANSFORMED What happens when a beautiful melody is transported to a new setting? How does its meaning change? And what is a melody anyway? Investigate one of the most mysterious but essential aspects of music in works of Debussy, Prokofiev, and others. January 24, 2015 ORCHESTRA TRANSFORMED The sounds that a symphony orchestra can produce are almost limitless, as varied as the personalities of composers who create for it. Survey the remarkable range of sonorities produced by different combinations of instruments in music by Handel, Chen Qigang, Shostakovich, and others. February 21, 2015 STORY TRANSFORMED Can music tell an actual story? Or does each listener hear their own story? Explore the world of meanings suggested in music by composers from very different cultures. May 9, 2015 DANCE TRANSFORMED The waltz craze swept Europe in the 19th century, and that beautiful music has been reinterpreted by composers ever since. Trace the evolution of this most charming music in works by Johann Strauss II, Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, and Christopher Rouse.

Each Young People’s Concert is preceded at 12:45pm by Kidzone Live! – an interactive music fair where kids can try out instruments, play musical games, and preview the theme of the day’s concert. Bring your child to join the fun! Young People’s Concerts are hosted by Theodore Wiprud, Vice President, Education. MetLife Foundation is the lead corporate underwriter for the New York Philharmonic's Education Programs. Additional support from The Theodore H. Barth Foundation.

YOUR VERY NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC Just as the city itself attracts talent from all over the globe, so too does the New York Philharmonic; 106 of the world’s finest musicians united by an uncommon love of music, led by a conductor who inspires them to play as one. It is the people and their great talents that make this New York’s Philharmonic. We invite you to learn more about them. To hear their stories and share their inspiration, learn more, view videos, and meet the people who are the New York Philharmonic, visit nyphil.org/about.

“When I was about four, a little girl I knew played ‘Twinkle, Twinkle’ on the violin. Immediately I wanted to play the violin, too…. I eventually gave up the violin — I liked the viola sound better.” — Vivek Kamath, who has performed at the Marlboro, Ravinia, Sarasota, Blossom, and Bowdoin festivals and with the Philharmonic Ensembles, also enjoys playing tennis, studying wildlife, and dining out.

I started playing it at eight.” — Joseph Alessi, whose father was a professional trumpet player, and mother a singer in the Metropolitan Opera chorus, and whose 1999 recording of George Crumb’s Star-Child won a Grammy.
