La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema

YO-YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE

The Oscar-winning actress (La Vie en Rose, Midnight in Paris, Rust and Bone) stars in the U.S. Premiere of a new, fully staged production of Honegger’s dramatic masterpiece. Alan Gilbert conducts, June 10—13.

The Silk Road Ensemble and Yo-Yo Ma celebrate their 15th anniversary season by joining the New York Philharmonic for a special collaboration. Integrating musical traditions and instruments from around the world into the fabric of the symphony orchestra, the two ensembles make cross-cultural connections and showcase virtuoso performers in new world classical music.

“One of the most fabulous violinists of our time ... a truly great artist” (Le Figaro) performs Brahms, Barber, Bach, and the U.S. Premiere of a new concerto for Violin and Oboe by French composer Thierry Escaich.

As the orchestra that premiered his New World Symphony, the Philharmonic has long held a close relationship with Dvorˇák, who lived in New York for three years. We celebrate this legacy December 4–13 with conductor Christoph von Dohnányi, and with performances of Dvorˇák’s chamber music masterpieces in our Saturday Matinee Concerts.

Christopher Rouse completes his tenure as The Marie-Josée Kravis Composerin-Residence with Thunderstuck, a new orchestral work to be premiered in October; the Philharmonic also performs the New York Premiere of his Flute Concerto and Iscariot. This season includes premieres of Philharmonic commissions from John Adams, Unsuk Chin, Thierry Escaich, and Peter Eötvös as well as the U.S. Premiere of a new work from Thomas Adès.

When Maria was a little girl and heard her family listening to the soundtrack of Bernstein’s West Side Story, the song “Maria” came on and she ran around looking for who was calling her name. In addition to now being a member of the Philharmonic, she performs contemporary music with groups such as Music Mobile and the Guild of Composers, has toured Europe with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, and is a member of the cello quartet CELLO.
