Embracing Beauty – Suppliers’ Day 2021 Susanna Fernandes, 2021 NYSCC Chair

elcome back to New York! After almost two years, I am so excited to see and welcome NYSCC members, fellow chemists, product development teams, and suppliers to the main event for innovations in ingredients and formulations. The 42nd Annual NYSCC Suppliers’ Day will take place in-person on November 10th-11th at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The Suppliers’ Day team has been working hard and pushing forward to produce a safe event chock-full of innovation, education, business-building, and fun. The show’s theme is “Embracing Beauty,” celebrating all that we create including the latest ingredients and formulations impacting product development, the roles and influence of our members, and the growth and success of cosmetic science. Suppliers’ Day will also focus on overcoming challenges and formulating for inclusivity and diversity, while inspiring unique and novel beauty and personal care products. Please look inside this special Cosmetiscope issue for information on all the educational programs being offered, supported by our association and media partners, including new content focused on Indie 360°, Back to Powerful Beauty, Conscious Inclusion, and Clean and Natural Beauty Panel. The show also offers its core programs with relevant and important content added including Fragrance: The Invisible Art, Discover Sustainability, Digital Age of Beauty, World of Chemistry, IBA Regulatory and Compliance Update, and the SCC pre-event CEP Courses. The show floor Presentation Theater also returns with two days of innovations from the exhibit floor and is open to all attendees. The NYSCC continues its nurturing of the next generation of chemists with the expansion of our Future Chemists Workshop, Mentorship Breakfast Mixer and Information Session, University Row, and the SCC and NYSCC Co-sponsored Career Fair. After the first day of the show, spend your night at our Education and Awards Night ceremony at HK Hall. The winner of the CEW Supplier’s Beauty Creators Award will be announced and scholarships will be presented along with dinner and Broadway style entertainment. With curated educational programs, hundreds of exhibitors, networking opportunities (including a member/guest breakfast), and enhanced experiential learning (including the new Indie Brand Pavilion), there is something for everyone at Suppliers’ Day. All registered attendees for NYSCC Suppliers’ Day will automatically be registered for our virtual day, which kicks off on November 12th and features more suppliers that were not able to attend the New York event along with the unique learning programs. We hope you have a positive and energized experience and enjoy all that “Embracing Beauty” has to offer! On behalf of the NYSCC Board and Executive Committee we sincerely thank you for your constant support and understanding as we navigated the twists and turns of this pandemic and look forward to welcoming you safely back to the beauty capital, New York City! P.S. If you would like to expand your knowledge of naturally derived ingredients, check out our November 17th virtual program on “New Green Emollients for Personal Care Applications” and stay tuned for our December plans including our activities at the 75th Annual SCC Scientific Meeting and Showcase.

NYSCC Focuses on the Future Formulation Expert!

W

hile providing education and engagement for our members and the cosmetic chemistry community at large is paramount to our mission, equally important is engaging and empowering those who will be the future force of the industry. The 2021 NYSCC Suppliers’ Day event will be the epicenter for these next generation leaders with programs designed that allow them to envision their future. Here’s an overview of what’s planned:

Future Chemists Workshop (FCW)

A staple at Suppliers’ Day in New York City, the FCW provides an interactive learning and challenge based environment for university students and leaders of tomorrow. Our goal is to host and instruct approximately 50 university students from chapters across the U.S. in a safe and compliant real-life lab experience. This is scheduled to take place on Day 1 of Suppliers’ Day – November 10, 2021.

Mentor-Mentee Icebreaker and Mixer

This event brings students from the FCW, as well as NYSCC student members, together with seasoned industry professionals to highlight and reinforce the professional development programs offered at Suppliers’ Day and throughout the year by the NYSCC. The committee spearheading this program will also introduce the sophisticated database which will match mentors and mentees while fostering interaction through fun, thoughtprovoking icebreakers. This is scheduled to take place over breakfast on Day 1 of Suppliers’ Day – November 10, 2021.

SCC Career Day

NYSCC Suppliers’ Day will join forces with National SCC to complete this trifecta of offerings. Details are still being finalized, but topping off the activities for junior members of the SCC at large will be an opportunity to meet significant stakeholders of the cosmetics and personal care industry who will come together to share information on what the industry needs from its future workforce. During the event, information will also be presented by academia and corporate professionals providing attendees with vital information on how to take the next step in their cosmetic science career.

T

Call for Papers

he Cosmetiscope editorial committee invites all interested parties to submit feature technical articles for publication in the NYSCC monthly newsletter. Authors of feature articles are eligible to win the prestigous NYSCC Literature Award ($1,000) for the best front-page article published during the calendar year. Writing an article for your peers is a very rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, and will ensure your place in NYSCC history. You may choose whatever topic you feel would be interesting to fellow colleagues in our industry. We also welcome any other types of commentaries or articles that may be published in the Career Corner, Technical Tidbit section, or as a Letter to the Editor. NYSCC Education and Awards Night Ceremony

Celebrating Back to New York City and CEW Supplier’s Beauty Creators Award Winner

T

November 10th, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. HK Hall, 605 W 48th Street, New York, NY

he NYSCC is thrilled to come back to the NEW NORMAL, celebrating its return to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center this year for Suppliers’ Day 2021. The theme of Suppliers’ Day this year is “Embracing Beauty,” and the New York Chapter will be granting various universities and educational institutions multiple scholarships and awards to commend their efforts on advancing cosmetic science education in preparation of our next generation of cosmetic scientists. A highlight of this ceremony will be the announcement of this year’s winner of the CEW Supplier’s Beauty Creators Award. This year, we are also pleased to announce a very special scholarship program in honor of our past chapter secretary, Roumelia Alina. This new award has been created to honor the virtues that Roumelia Alina displayed as a part of the cosmetic industry, her professional journey, her contributions to the society, and how she embraced inclusion and diversity. The evening starts with a cocktail reception to reconnect and network with industry colleagues. A six-course banquet style dinner follows along with the start of the awards program including the presentation to the scholarship recipients. This fun and inspiring evening will also include an announcement of the newly elected Chapter leaders to the NYSCC Board of Directors. A very special Broadway type production to celebrate the NYSCC’s comeback to New York City will also be part of the entertainment. • For inquiries, please contact awards@nyscc.org. • Tickets are limited and priced at $150.00 for a full access pass including dinner. • Attire: black tie optional.

New Green Emollients for Personal Care Applications By Alexandra Pavanelli – Oxiteno

November 17, 2021 • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

T

Sponsored by: he market for cosmetics and personal care products based on natural derived ingredients is growing very fast since consumers are increasingly aware about the role and responsibility of each individual in promoting sustainability and environmental protection. In addition, although not always true, consumers associate “natural” and “green” ingredients with mildness, well being, and health. Therefore, the development of ingredients derived from renewable raw materials as an alternative to those of petrochemical origin is an important goal for the ingredients’ industry to be competitive in this new market scenario.
