Letter from the Chair

2023: The Year in

Review

…Stacey House

ear Fellow NYSCC Members, it has been an absolute pleasure to serve our Chapter this past year as the Chair. As I reflect on our events and meetings, the passion and commitment from every person that contributed to make the NYSCC shine is appreciated. In addition to record attendance at every event, we created opportunities to strengthen our industry from high school students through to our emeritus members. As a chapter we truly represent the advancement of science across a wide range of topics and categories. This is reflected in the content of our monthly events, Suppliers’ Day, program speakers, scholarship and grant program, college tours, mentorship, digital advocacy, and blogs. The NYSCC can inspire future generations alongside industry experts. Simply put, we deliver educational networking events. Looking at the accomplishments this year, we had many record-breaking events with Suppliers’ Day surpassing pre-COVID attendance, partnering with CEW and WWD, and integrating the fundamental contribution from our industries’ scientists, engineers, and marketers. Our fireside chats, IBA, and CACPA co-sponsored events enabled us to raise the bar collaboratively with our important partners and continue to make it exciting! When I was elected for this role two years ago, I shared how I could not wait to finally become a NYSCC member over 20+ years ago. Since then, we have evolved by opening our doors and encouraging student involvement earlier in their careers, which is an opportunity I had always wanted. It is with the utmost gratitude to be able to serve the chapter that has taught me so much and helped me confirm my passion for this industry. It is only fitting that we end the year with the Awards Event on December 12, 2023, and provide scholarships to inspire and support many more. I would like to thank my Executive Board (Amber Evans, Giorgio Dell’Aqua, Luciana Coutinho, and Alex Blakeman), Cathy and Lexi Piterski for their program support, Giorgino Macalino and his team for planning the best special events, the Suppliers’ Day management team (Jane McDermott, Erin Layton, Annie Scully, and Elizabeth Tracey), Roger McMullen for his dedication as the Editor of Cosmetiscope, Toussaint Jordan and Danusia Wnek for supporting our Scholarships and Grants program, Hani Fares and our Scientific Committee, Ava Atri and Mary Fenderlandar for their work on the Mentorship Program, Amy Marshall on By-Laws, Maria Sousa for supporting Social Media, our finance team (Catalina Wiatroski and Kristine Van Iderstine), Thomas Drwiega, James Runkle, Susanna Fernandes, and Mohammed Abdulla. Thanks to your amazing work and dedication the NYSCC made a huge impact in 2023. I am grateful to all of you! Truly, thank you! As I look to next year and taking on the role of Board Advisor, I wish the upcoming NYSCC Board all the best. I will be here to support you and watch you succeed. Congratulations Amber Evans, John Carola, Mythili Nori, and Diane Dabkowski! Wishing you all a Healthy, Happy Holiday and 2024! With gratitude and best regards, Stacey House

Letter from the 2024 Chair 2023: The Year in

…Amber Evans

t is with great appreciation and honor that I write this letter to the NYSCC membership. As the incoming Chair, I am following in the footsteps of an incredible executive board that has taken this chapter to new heights, which are so nicely detailed in the pages of this issue of Cosmetiscope. I look forward to leading us into an impactful future, and I thank everyone who entrusted me with this opportunity to serve as the Chair. With 2024 on the horizon, I am excited for the industry’s future. Our role as scientists, chemists, marketers, and mentors is more important than ever. This was evident at the recent CEW Beauty Awards with many of the category winners being science-driven with innovative ingredients at the forefront of their success. I am eager to detail all that we have in store for the Chapter, after the new year. As a primer, our foundation will be built on leveraging inspiration from all sources to influence innovation in our industry. This will be woven into all our programming and will be prominent in the halls of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center during our dominant industry event, Suppliers’ Day, in May. The NYSCC will continue to foster relationships outside our chapter with the spirit of collaboration in full force as we move into 2024. We will expand beyond the chemist community and highlight the full spectrum of product and brand success—marketing, sales, regulatory, packaging, and more. Together we play an integral role in what the consumer wants and expects from beauty and personal care products. Further, we will continue to increase our outreach efforts as we elevate the Chapter’s role as a key resource for students, professionals, and communities. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to this year’s Chair, Stacey House, who has been such an inspiration and a strong voice and leader for the Chapter. Her support as Advisor next year will be beneficial. I look forward to working with Stacey, board members John Carola, Mythili Nori, Diane Dabkowski, and Alex Blakeman, as well as our Chapter’s many devoted committee members and collaborators, to deliver on my vision and continue this Chapter’s strong legacy of advancing cosmetic science. May the magic of this season fill you with joy and peace. I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

rimalHyal™ Hydra[+] by Givaudan Active Beauty was announced the winner of the prestigious CEW Beauty Awards on November 7th at the Hilton Midtown during CEW’s 30th Beauty Awards Luncheon. This special award category for “Supplier’s: Ingredients and Formulation” is sponsored by the NYSCC and recognizes the role that ingredients, formulation, and new technology plays in successful beauty and personal care product launches. Givaudan was one of eight finalists that were selected from more than three dozen submissions that were reviewed and voted upon by a curated panel of judges that included leading beauty and personal care brands including members of the NYSCC Scientific Advisory Committee. The judges were: Toussaint Jordan, Brand Manager, Product Marketing, Edgewell; Eileen Kim, Head of U.S. Innovation and Research, Chanel; Ron Robinson, Founder/CEO, BeautyStat.com; Mike Wong, Chief Science Officer, Orveon; and Tao Zheng, Executive Director, Advanced Technologies – SPF and Makeup Innovation, The Estée Lauder Companies.
