Welcome

73rd Annual PostGraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology december 13 -17, 2019 Marriott Marquis NyC

dear Colleagues: For 73 years the PostGraduate Assembly (PGA), the annual meeting of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, has been a focal point for innovation and change in the medical specialty of anesthesiology. The PGA is currently one of the largest annual gatherings for anesthesiologists worldwide, and a premier international meeting, as more than 30 percent of attendees travel from outside the United States. We encourage participants to share experiences with fellow practitioners and scientists in the heart of New York City. Our objective is to provide an opportunity to interact with other clinicians for the benefit of your patients, your practice, your graduate medical education program and your research. Through your feedback and other sources, we identify knowledge and practice gaps within our specialty and address them through a variety of teaching techniques. We hope you find a teaching method suitable to your learning style, and welcome your suggestions for improvement. Teaching formats include lectures, interactive workshops, mini workshops, problem-based learning discussions, focus sessions and poster presentations. Scientific Panels address knowledge and practice gaps chosen from a broad range of topics relevant to the clinician. The sessions include interactive discussions, during which the panel addresses audience questions and comments. Focus Sessions give in-depth coverage of more specific topics and pro/con debates on controversial issues that are of interest to select audiences. Workshops, Mini Workshops and the Thoracic Symposium are close contact sessions with expert instructors. They are an opportunity to seek out in-depth information regarding a clinical competence. Problem-based Learning discussions (PBLDs) are small group case discussions with experienced clinicians. The goal of the PBLDs is to explore a specific clinical problem and learn through close interaction between the moderator and the participants. This year, for the first time we will offer Engaging with the Experts sessions. These sessions are designed to be topic-specific exchanges between expert panelists and audience members who are encouraged to interact and offer their own questions and insights to the topics at hand. The resident research Contest affords young investigators an opportunity to present their work to their peers at a major international forum. Scientific Exhibits, Poster Presentations and Medically Challenging Case reports allow attendees to discuss the latest scientific progress in the specialty of anesthesiology and review interesting cases. Technical Exhibits enable attendees to assess available drugs, devices, equipment and services from a multitude of vendors. Hospital Visits take place on Thursday, one day prior to the start of the PGA. Arrangements are made with area hospitals and medical schools to provide attendees with the opportunity to observe the facilities and equipment of major institutions in New York City. Social Events allow you and your guests the chance to cap off intense days of learning with memorable evenings filled with Broadway shows, tours, the opera, and the endless exciting restaurants of New York City. The bright lights of Broadway beckon you. Take advantage of everything “the city that never sleeps” has to offer during our 73rd Annual meeting!

NySSA & PGA History The first PostGraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology (PGA) was launched in December 1945, in New York City. Originally envisioned as a biennial meeting, aimed at assisting physicians returning from serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, the second PGA was held in 1947. By 1948, a venue was needed for the annual meeting of the New York State section of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Thus, the next PGA took place that year. The third PGA also included a panel chaired by two Harvard surgeons, illustrating a commitment to utilize the best experts, regardless of their specialty. The panel’s prominence within the PGA program also demonstrated the importance of pain management to anesthesiology, even in the late 1940s. Beginning in 1950, the PGA became an annual event. In 1963, the meeting moved to a larger venue which allowed for the expansion of the program. In the 1980s, the PGA continued to grow and new innovations such as mini-workshops were introduced. Focus sessions, problem-based learning discussions, and hands-on workshops were added in the 1990s to keep the PGA on the cutting-edge of anesthesiology. What began in 1945 as an effort to provide continuing education to local physicians, has since evolved into an international meeting of historic proportions.
