The bedroom communities surrounding the island of Manhattan have provided a vital function for commuters for decades. Typically within walking distance of transportation hubs serving the city, the best bedroom communities serve as a haven for workers and their families who want to live apart from the busy metropolis, but remain close enough to access it quickly and easily.

Bedroom Communities Located on the New Haven line of MetroNorth Railroad, which runs along the Long Island Sound, Pelham is the oldest town in Westchester — and offers one of the easiest commutes to Grand CentralTerminal. Renowned as the first suburb north of New York City, Pelham is directly north of the Bronx, and has long been home to commuters in search of a safe suburban lifestyle within easy striking distance of the city. “To us, Pelham is the ultimate bedroom community,” said Holly Mellstrom, associate broker with McClellan Sotheby’s International Realty. “It is the closest Westchester suburb to Metro-North, and is only 29 minutes to Grand Central Terminal. It is ideal for people who are a little leery about the isolation of the suburbs.”
