his past weekend the

much anticipated film Think Like A Man hit the theaters, which is a film loosely based on the New York Time's Best Selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man by media mogul Steve Harvey. The book is pretty much a self help relationship book which helps women to attain more success in their love lives. Now I must admit, I had my apprehensions about the film as well as the book. I just felt that as a young adult pursuing a life of purity I would be unable to take any of the advice that Steve was offering because in my opinion, encouraging a woman to think like a man goes against the biblical precepts of marriage and male-female relationships; however, the movie and the book both looked like they were extremely entertaining.

Steve Harvey and Tim Story are geniuses. I would recommend everyone to see this film, married, single, engaged, divorced. I would say that this is the best film that I have seen since For Colored Girls. By Jazmine Rogers

George Zimmerman Makes Bail..... No More Left to Say By Dr. Teresa Taylor Williams

George Zimmerman was released on $150,000 bail this past Sunday. There is nothing further to say about who George Zimmerman is other than he took the life of Trayvon Martin by shooting him and fatally wounding him. George Zimmerman in his own words, now repeated multiple times on TV, in his call to the police intimated that Trayvon Martin was walking suspiciously and lingering around inside the gated community where Zimmerman does "citizen's patrol." So many frightening things have come to mind in the wake of this tragedy. Once again, we who are of a "threatening" color in this country to those who are ignorant, presumptuous and racist, still garner up the archaic stereotypes of their dysfunctional upbringings. Those who are closet racists, or even those who loudly proclaim and support gun laws that will surely backfire on blacks and Hispanics who fall victim to misguided gunfire, are not ashamed of their views. In fact, Police Chief Sanford, recently attempted to resign from his position behind the Trayvon tragedy, but his resignation was rejected. Entertainer Bill Cosby made a statement which focused on the gun laws and how the laws in this country allow average citizens to carry arms in the wake of Trayvon's death. Florida being one of those states. Zimmerman's defense is that he felt his life was in danger during his physical altercation with Trayvon and hence the use of deadly force by firing his pistol. But I too ask the same question? Who was George Zimmerman in this country to be allowed to carry a concealed weapon. Was he a retired police officer who legally has the right to have his off-duty revolver on his or her person? Was George Zimmerman trained and licensed as a security guard by a reputable security company and therefore employed to protect a gated community? Or was George Zimmerman a "wannabe cop," a rogue individual with vigilante tendencies whose failed attempts to join the real police department failed? Well, according to some sources the last would probably describe George Zimmerman best. There

is a Sylvester Stallone movie, Judge Dredd, in which he plays a law enforcement officer in the next millennium. Sylverster Stallone had one line which was made famous because it was all encompassing of who he became when he put his uniform on and had the weapon on his hip. "I am the law!" were the words that

I yelled out of my car window as he walked towards me from the train station loudly and frantically, 'take that hood off, you don't want to get shot!' brought criminals to their knees, panicked in fear of feeling his wrath and all and all meant he was almighty and all powerful. Guns in the hands of the timid or the weak minded or the vigilantly or the citizen who feels he is trained because he has a gun license mounted on the wall can kill--mistakenly as in the case of Zimmerman.

community streets you better have a good reason for being there. In my gated community the most that will happen is a phone call to the front gate will be made. The security representative at the front gate will ask for a description--NOT LEAVE THE BOOTH--and call the "real" Police. It is still beyond comprehension that a young man was shot for walking through the gated community and obviously headed to a destination inside since his father's fiancee lived there. No one can tell me that he had not been seen before--oh, I forgot, since according to r e p o r t s i t w a s r a i n i n g , Tr a y v o n reportedly had his hood on and therefore looked menacing and dangerous. I picked my son up from the train last week. The temperature had dropped by evening and he had his hood from his sweatshirt on. I yelled out of my car window as he walked towards me from the train station loudly and frantically, 'take that hood off, you don't want to get shot!' So this is what we have come to or should I say this is what we have returned to in this society. Young black men dangling from a fictitious tree branch--not hanging from a rope, but dead from wearing a hood.

The gated community where the Trayvon-Zimmerman encounter occurred had been burglarized many times according to news reports. Residents and community watchers were on high alert for anyone who looked suspicious in the neighborhood. This all sounds very reasonable to me having lived behind gates for most of the last twenty-five years. Living in a gated community has given me a sense of security that I have become accustomed to with so many burglaries occurring around my community. Just last night as I prepared this commentary, I watched the news and saw another home invasion in Westchester County. A husband and wife and their three children had been tied up while the burglars ransacked their home. Luckily, they were not harmed.

CEO of Black Civic Participation Speaks Out Melanie L. Campbell, president and CEO of The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and convener of Black Women's Roundtable issued the following statement regarding the murder charge brought in the Trayvon Martin case: On behalf of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, I commend Trayvon Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, for their courage and unwavering conviction to stand for justice for their son and for all of the black men and boys whose names we will never know that have been victims of racial profiling. The nation still mourns the senseless loss of Trayvon. With the arrest of his alleged killer we are optimistic that the wheels of justice will prevail. By charging George Zimmerman with second-degree murder in the shooting of Trayvon- an unarmed teenager returning from the store with snacks -Floridaspecial prosecutor Angela Corey has let the world know that America values the life of a black teenager. We also support the decision of the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the Sanford Police Departments handling of this case.

What has become increasingly popular in my region is the forced entries by kicking in the front door. So I guess I am also guilty of profiling--not by color--but of anyone I don't recognize as a community resident. If you are walking through our gated

TRENDING POLITICS KINGS COUNTY OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE NEW REPORT ON CHILD ABUSE ACROSS NEW YORK STATE Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes, Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan Jr., Queens County District Attorney Richard A. Brown, New York State Director of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, Meredith Wiley, and crime survivors announced a new report showing the extent of child abuse and neglect across New York State. They also emphasized the benefits of voluntary home visiting services, which can reduce child abuse and neglect by as much as 50 percent. On behalf of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, the three District Attorneys released a report indicating that at least 77,000 children in New York State suffered abuse and neglect in 2010 – more than 200 every day. 114 of those children died as a result of the abuse. District Attorney Hynes said, “We are concerned about child abuse and neglect as a reality for far too many children, not just statistics on a sheet of paper. Nationally, there were almost 700,000 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect that claimed the lives of 1,560 in 2010, and 114 of those kids were from New York.

That number should shock the conscience of every one of us.” “One of the most difficult aspects of my job is dealing with the victims of crime and their families. There’s no punishment that can undo their anguish. If we continue to allow thousands of children each year to be berated, beaten, brutalized and neglected, we will pay dearly not only

NATIONAL EQUAL PAY DAY, 2012 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION Working women power America's economy and sustain our middle class. For millions of families across our country, women's wages mean food on the table, decent medical care, and timely mortgage payments. Yet, in 2010 -- 47 years after President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 -- women who worked full-time earned only 77 p e rc e n t o f wh at t h e i r m a l e counterparts did. The pay gap was even greater for African American and Latina women, with African American women earning 64 cents and Latina women earning 56 cents for every dollar earned by a Caucasian man. National Equal Pay Day represents the date in the current year through which women must work to match what men earned in the previous year, reminding us that we must keep striving for an America where everyone gets an equal day's pay for an equal day's work. At a time when families across our country are struggling to make ends meet, ensuring a fair wage for all parents is more important than ever. Women are breadwinners in a growing number of families, and women's

abuse and neglect. A study of one program model, the Nurse-Family Partnership program, compared at-risk children whose mothers received visits with similar children whose families were not served. Children who did not participate had twice as many incidents of abuse and neglect as children in participating families. By age 15, youth whose families did not participate in the program had more than twice as many arrests. One site of the quality nurse home visitation program found significantly fewer cases of childhood injury and child mortality among families who participated. In the 2011 fiscal year, New

earnings play an increasingly important role in families' incomes. For them, fair pay is even more than a basic right -- it is an economic necessity. That is why my Administration is committed to securing equal pay for equal work. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the first bill I signed as President, empowers women to recover wages lost to discrimination by extending the time period in which an employee can file a claim. In 2010, I was proud to create the National Equal Pay Task Force to identify and combat equal pay violations. The Task Force has helped women recover millions in lost wages, built collaborative training programs that educate employees about their rights and infor m employer s of their obligations, and facilitated an unprecedented level of inter-agency coordination to improve enforcement of equal pay laws. Working women are at the heart of an America built to last. Equal pay will strengthen our families, grow our economy, and enable the best ideas and boldest innovations to

flourish -- reg ardless of the innovator's gender. On National Equal Pay Day, let us resolve to become a Nation that values the contributions of our daughters as much as those of our sons, denies them no opportunity, and sets no limits on their dreams. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 17, 2012, as National Equal Pay Day. I call upon all Americans to recognize the full value of women's skills and their significant contributions to the labor force, acknowledge the injustice of wage discrimination, and join efforts to achieve equal pay. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventeenth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth. TRENDING BUSINESS Understanding your money and how to leverage it is a topic covered in National Financial Literacy Month. The FINRA National Financial Capability Study recently looked at the spending and saving habits of Americans and here is what they found: Most Americans lack emergency savings or “rainy day” funds. Only 49 percent of survey respondents reported that they had set aside f u n d s s u f fi c i e n t t o c ov e r expenses for three months in case of sickness, job loss, economic downturn or other emergency. The majority of Americans have not done any retirement p l a n n i n g. O n l y 4 2 percent of the FINRA survey respondents who weren’t yet retired said they had taken the time to calculate what they would need. Well below half of Americans have saved money for college. Only 41 percent of those with financially dependent children have set money aside for a college education. BBB recommends that everyone do the following: Start calculating now. You are never too young to start planning for retirement. While individuals increasingly have to take responsibility for their financial security after retirement, the majority of Americans appear not to have done any retirement planning.

Decisions about how much to save in order to afford a comfortable retirement require collecting infor mation about several important variables (including Social Security and retirement plan benefits) and doing some calculations. Budget appropriately when it comes time to pay for a child’s education. Over the past decade, tuition and fees at public colleges and universities have increased more rapidly than they did during the 1980s or 1990s, rising by an average of nearly 5 percent each year (adjusted for inflation). With this trend unlikely to abate, an average American family with children can expect to dedicate a sizable share of their resources to paying college tuition. Manage your debt. One of the best ways to ensure a brighter financial future is to manage and eliminate costly debt. BBB offers “Managing Credit – Made Simpler,” an online learning tool for consumers and small business owners. Avoid “get rich quick” schemes. BBB exposes scams and frauds every day. Sadly, many of these are aimed at investors who have done the right thing so far and saved some money, but make a mistake when it comes to investing. BBB recently partnered with the FINRA Financial Education Foundation to promote smart investing and to help consumers avoid investment scams. Despite recent efforts by Weight Watchers® and other pound-shedding purveyors to bring more men into the dieting fold even resorting to dressing NBA legend-turneddiet spokesperson Charles Barkley in drag to convince men it s possible to lose like a man in one recent male-focused marketing campaign*, men still account for less than 15% of participants in commercial weightloss programs. Findings from a new, firstof-its-kind study reveal why this disparity exists, underscoring the critical, often absent, component of tapping into the male psyche namely proving that men respond overwhelmingly well to weight loss programs employing a competition-fueled, cash prize-based approach. HealthyWage (www.HealthyWage.com), the only company that pays Americans to lose weight regardless of which diet and/or fitness program they choose to follow (Jenny Craig®, Nutrisystem®, Atkins®, or any other formal or informal diet/fitness regimen), today announced results from a collaborative study uncovering that, while weight loss wagering is an extraordinarily successful way to motivate both genders to lose weight (proffering an overall 49% and 29% success rate for a respective 5%+ and 10%+ body weight loss), men are more than four times more likely than women to win a weight loss bet. In the study, fully 63% of male participants in a weight loss betting program realized success, losing 10% or more of their body weight, versus 15% of women achieving this same notable measure of weight loss. Gimmicks and cross-dressing need not apply. The ground-breaking study found remarkable success for men involved in a weight loss bet and is the first to verify that men and women lose weight differently. In brief, employees at a top-tier Fortune 50 (fifty) company were given the opportunity to make a weight loss wager to ante up

Start Planning Now to Protect Your Kids from the 'Summer Slide’ Working parents are already lining up child care plans for the summer. While they’re at it, educators say all parents of school-age children should also plan for preventing the dreaded summer slide. “The ‘summer slide’ is the information and skills children forget during summer break from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next school year,” says Carrie Scheiner, who created Exploracise (www.exploracise.com), to provide parents and educators with awardwinning products and programs that combine learning, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices. The education slide is welldocumented by numerous studies, which were synthesized in the 1990s by Harris Cooper, then a professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He found that

6

children could forget one to three months of learning over the summer. “While some people are aware of the learning loss, many aren’t aware that children tend to gain weight more rapidly when they’re out of school,” Scheiner says, citing a 2007 study by Paul Von Hippel of Ohio State University. “He found that kids, especially those at risk for obesity, gain as much weight during the summer as they do all school year.” What can parents do to keep young brains and bodies engaged in healthy ways over the summer? Scheiner offers these tips: • Journal current achievement levels. How do you know if your child is affected by summer slide if you don’t remember where they ended the year? Create a summer journal and, in the first few pages, document what they most recently learned in their major subjects. Were they adding and

$100 to win $400 if they lost a significant 10% of their starting body weight within six months. The result was stunningly widespread weight loss among participants particularly men. Of the total participants, 63% of the male subjects won the bet and were paid $400; 15% of female subjects also won the $400; c o n s e q u e n t l y, m o r e t h a n a quarter 29% of all program participants in total won the bet and the cash. Notably, nearly half 49% of all program participants reported losing at least 5% of their starting weight. The full Results and Conclusions of the study are accessible online at www.kerncomm.com/ WeightLossBetting.pdf. While it s no surprise that men respond to competitive, game-like scenarios, this innate quality is now proven to be particularly favorable and advantageous in competitive, prize-driven weight loss endeavors, said HealthyWage cofounder David Roddenberry. These study findings validate that weight loss wagering programs like our 10% Challenge are not only highly rewarding for both genders both physically and financially, they re also especially effective for men since such efforts tap into the male drive for competition and a desire to win. "We have more than 40 of the Fortune 500 as clients, including Office Depot, Huntsman, and Sonic Automotive," Roddenberry concludes. "In addition to this recent research, other of our directto-consumer data illustrates the same trend that men are more successful in the weight loss betting programs. For instance more than 65% of the winners in our 'Matchup' team contests are men even though more women join the program. The study is important in light of the health incentives trend, including the recent health care bill Affordable Care Act (Section 2705), The proposition is currently under review with similar consideration being given in other states.

subtracting double-digit numbers? Doing long division? What were some of their vocabulary or spelling words? Throughout the summer you can track their progress and, at the least, maintain those levels – or maybe even move on to more challenging material. • Try a weeklong educational day camp. We all want our kids to have fun during the summer, and they can. Enroll in the fun, active day camps that focus on art, music or swimming. But toward the end of the summer, have your children attend one week of math camp and one week of reading camp as a refresher.

Many websites offer activity ideas that you and the kids can enjoy together. For instance, a free ebook, “10 Top Fun Wise Games: Making Learning Math Fun” is available at www.exploracise.com.

• Feed the brain during free time. Kids have a lot more free time in the summer. With fewer scheduled activities, even kids who attend a camp may have more time to hang out in the evening. How can you feed their brain during this extra time? Visit the library and check out print books, audio books, educational DVDs, and even educational computer games.

• ACTIVE-ate the brain. Getting active exercises both the body and the brain. Just like our body needs exercise to stay healthy, so does the brain to keep those neurons firing. Encourage kids to stay active and play outside during the summer and allow only limited, scheduled times for sedentary activities like video games or TV.

COMMUNITY Immigrant Groups and City Officials Press New York Immigration Coalition’s Policy On an unseasonably warm spring day, two hundred New Yorkers, including advocates, city officials, immigrant community members, and dozens of diverse immigrant groups, gathered at City Hall to promote the NYIC’s Top City Budget and Policy Priorities for the year. Immigrants account for more than one-third of the city’s residents and 29% of all voters in New York. These numbers demonstrate that New York is an immigrant city, and immigrants have a growing political presence. Among the priorities for the year are the need to protect funding for programs, including ESL, adult literary and legal services; expanding support for Family

Resource Centers, schoolcommunity partnerships that promote immigrant parent engagement; and ensuring accountability and oversight of the NYPD. “This is our 15th annual Immigrants’ Day of Action at City Hall, and we call on the City to work with immigrant communities to address the urgent issues of human services and civil rights,” said Ms. Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition. “The Mayor and the Council must together, make it a top priority to allocate fair funding for immigrant services and ensure fair treatment of individuals by the NYPD regardless of their religion and ethnic background. ”

The musical aspects of this exciting, high-energy troupe from Texas appeals to everyone – from the very young to the very old – in its perfect mix of pop, rock, swing and classic oldies. Described as “Glee, with a kick”, Vocal Trash plays to capacity crowds, from Las Vegas to Madison Square Garden, presenting their “wow factor” experience and making them a hit with all venues. Audiences can’t seem to get enough of this energetic group whose “feel good” music literally gets people up and dancing in the aisles. Vocal Trash combines uniquely recycled musical instruments, such as their “one of a kind” bass and guitars, with an industrial percussion section made-up of metal trash cans, plastic barrels, water bottles and other landfill rescued items. Their hip, yet poignant, presentation teaches children to use their imagination in a meaningful and lasting way as it relates to eco-friendly living. This makes for a powerful and personal tool

to reach young minds while enforcing an important narrative to reuse items that would normally end up as discarded, earth burdensome waste. With a rare display of excellence, synchronization, precision and musicianship, Vocal Trash followers, affectionately deemed as “Trash-Heads,” love the distinctive blend of first-rate singing, industrial style drumming, comedy antics and awardwinning break-dancing. When it comes to diversity, Vocal Trash is the ultimate variety show with an urban feel and Broadway appeal. While Earth Day is celebrated once a year in April (22nd), Vocal Trash has been doing their part by incorporating recycling into their shows for years, long before “green” was hip - making them one of the most positive role models in entertainment today. Part stage performers, part recycling gurus - these entertainers make green awareness fun for folks of all ages. Kelsey Rae, star of the show who coined the groups mantra ‘THINK... before you throw it away’ says, “We’re simply presenting a positive message. Music and dance is universal... there’s no better way to reach the masses.”

NATIONAL LAWYERS FILES CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CITY OF NEW YORK Today, National Lawyers Guild New York City Chapter (NLG-NYC) Legal Observer Damian Treffs filed a lawsuit against the City of New York and the officers who falsely arrested him for legal observing a peaceful Occupy Wall Street demonstration the morning of January 1, 2012. Mr. Treffs’ arrest and the excessive use of force by the NYPD was captured on video and broadcast live to thousands of viewers. Mr. Treffs is represented by the Law Office of Rankin & Taylor.

Councilmember Jumaane Williams. With the issue of NYPD surveillance getting added attention with today’s announcement of a Pulitzer prize award to the Associated Press for its reporting on the subject, speakers also highlighted the issue. “As a child of immigrant parentage and as the representative of a predominantly immigrant community, I consider the needs of immigrants in New York City a top priority,” said Councilmember Jumaane Williams. “I hope that will be reflected that in our upcoming budget and policy decisions. I am proud to support many of the New York Immigration Coalition’s priorities, including participatory budgeting and the need for greater NYPD accountability. We must also push for the restoration of funding to the Immigrant Opportunities Initiative, which has supported programs that best

serve the legal and financial needs of a population that is otherwise at risk for neglect and fraud.”

Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez

"There's no question; New York is an immigrant town" said Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez. "More than a third of New York City residents are immigrants, including myself, and we have to make sure the city's budget addresses their needs. The funding the Immigration Coalition is calling for would provide the foundations for immigrants to achieve success, a goal that all New Yorkers can support."

Pedestrian walks past on-looking police officers near the Occupy Wall Street Demonstration

The NYPD is long familiar with the NLG-NYC Legal Observers program, which has been a fixture at protests large and small around NYC since its founding in 1968. Aggressiveness towards Legal Observers by NYPD police officers was a rarity until the Occupy Wall Street movement launched in September 2011.

April 12, 2012 - April 25, 2012

Historically, NYPD officers have shown respect to Legal Observers, easily identifiable by their bright green hats embroidered with the words, “National Lawyers Guild Legal Observer.” Since the beginning of the Occupy Wall Street movement there have been frequent interference with both Legal Observers and journalists attempting to document the NYPD’s behavior. Mr. Treffs, a seasoned Legal Observer, was recording the names of demonstrators arrested in the vicinity of Second Avenue between East 12th and East 13th Streets when he was himself arrested. The videographer captured the moments before Mr. Treffs’ arrest and the excessive force used by the NYPD as eight officers converged on Mr. Treffs, threw him on top of the hood of a parked car, and violently cuffed him. Mr. Treffs spent approximately six hours in police custody and was charged with disorderly conduct. The New York County District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute Mr. Treffs at his arraignment. The video of Mr. Treffs’ arrest is available at http://www.ustream.tv/ recorded/19508535. Mr. Treffs appears at approximately the 10 minute mark and is arrested shortly thereafter. Treffs’ attorney Mark Taylor stated, “Observing and recording police conduct is not a crime whether done by Legal Observers, the press, or ordinary citizens. Under Commissioner Ray Kelly the NYPD has had a free reign to arrest witnesses in violation of New Yorker’s constitutional rights. We will work to hold the officers involved and the NYPD accountable for their actions.” Photo Credit By David Pena

TRENDING INTERVIEWS

Jonathan McReynolds Talks “Life Music” Last November I attended the Church of God in Christ’s 104th Holy Convocation in St. Louis and during one of the Youth Services a young man mounted the podium with his guitar and I was instantly blown away. What I loved the most was that his music was so true to my life. I later on found out that this young man was Jonathan McReynolds and I was given the fabulous opportunity of chatting with him to discuss his upcoming album Life Music. Check out what he had to say below. How would you define Jonathan McReynolds? Jonathan McReynolds is a twentytwo year old Chicagoan who just loves God, loves music and is thankful that God is using his music to make an impact. He’s a new artist who is really a nerd at heart and did not plan on necessarily being an artist but, God just really put his hand on everything and allowed it to do what its going to do. So, I really enjoyed your last release The Very Unofficial EP. I understand that you’re coming out with a new project sometime this year. Can you elaborate on what the project is going to be like?

It’s called Life Music. It’s coming out later on this year and its actually going to be the first full album. It’s the completion of the EP so you’ll have most of the songs from the EP remixed and everything. There will also be more new songs on this new album. So it’s really going to be, I think an amazing CD. It’ll be good music, a lot of relatable songs. I call it life music because I feel like there’s a lot of Sunday church music but my music is kind of the soundtrack for the rest, Monday through Saturday. That part of Christian life is just as important if not more important than what you are able to do in the House of the Lord. When you go out, back to work, back to school, back to everything you know – how is Christ relating to your daily actions and daily thoughts? That’s what this album is geared towards and I really pray that everybody kind of listens to it and is blessed by it. Will there be any artists that we know featured on Life Music? One artist listeners may recognize is Aaron Sledge. He’s an incredible writer, producer and singer. He does things in so many different genres. He’s amazing. He wrote, produced

and is featured on a great song called “Ready”. Your new single “I Love You” is really beautiful. What inspired it? It’s one of those in the studio songs. The way I write is really practical and how I’m feeling in that moment. Sometimes I go to a college and they don’t understand what I’m talking about or why I love God so much. I’m really just pouring out my faith as a believer in a world that didn’t really believe. People don’t understand why we life our hands and sing praises but I don’t care I love God. What advice can you offer young musicians seeking to follow in your footsteps? Well, everyone would like to say “Well, what I did was blah blah blah” “And then, I blah blah blah” but in reality God did it all and I think if you understand not only where your help comes from but where the plan comes from. Where the master plan comes from; It comes from the master. That’s what I would tell musicians. Understand who you are. Don’t worry about everybody else. Do well in your own time. Create your own standard for your music. Don’t worry about all the other folks and how good they’re doing and how good their skill is. There are plenty of amazing musicians and singers out there but when God has His hand over your life He’s going to anoint you for what you are

Jonathan McReynolds appointed to do. I would just say stay with God. That’s the best advice I could give. I would definitely say go to school. School was a very helpful thing to me as a musician but, in reality, the biggest thing you could do is stay with God. As musicians we don’t know how to do that often. When your life is based on your gift it can get real “me, me, me-ish”. In reality every gig and opportunity that God allows you to have, every album sold was all in God’s plan and you wouldn’t be able to do it without Him. You’re doing it all for His glory. As soon as musicians understand that and the love that He has for them I think that they’ll be fine. By: Jazmine Rogers

INTERVIEW

New York Trend Interview with Miss Black USA By: Jazmine Rogers

This past New York Fashion Week I met Ocielia Gibson, Miss Black USA 2011 at the lovely Emerge Runway Show put together by the wonderful Monique Tatum at Beautiful Planning Marketing & PR. My first impression of her was that she was sweet and so down to earth. After learning more about Miss Gibson I realized that she was truly the epitome of what Pretty with Purpose stands for. I was given the opportunity to chat with her for a while. Check out what she had to say below. What were your initial thoughts when you were first crowned Miss Black USA? Miss Black USA and our presenting sponsor which is Calgon are all about empowering women! My first initial reaction was surprise and then empowerment. My journey to Miss Black USA started in 2006. I competed three times in the Miss Black Texas Pageant before I won Miss Black Texas, which qualified me for the national Miss Black USA competition. So it has truly a been journey of perseverance to actually win this national title.

How has life changed since then? It has been such a blessing. My year has been filled with traveling, going to some amazing events, having amazing opportunities, meeting wonderful people, and advocating on behalf of The Heart Truth Campaign. A lot of women do not realize that heart disease is the number one killer of women. African-American women are disproportionately affected, so The Miss Black USA Organization is very serious and passionate about getting spreading the message of heart health. I have been tremendously honored to be a part of that movement, in addition to other events I’ve attended such as New York Fashion Week…where I met you! What exactly is More Than A Pretty Face Inc. ? More Than A Pretty Face Inc is a girls program that I launched in 2006 for young girls in urban communities. It started at a local high school near my college; I began mentoring girls after school. What I focused on with the young

girls’ events in community centers and churches. It took off from there! It’s really is just a labor of love that God put within me and a message that I am passionate about. I desire for our girls to discover and embrace true beauty – the inner beauty that only comes from Christ.

Ocielia Gibson ladies was their identity, self-image, and also living a lifestyle of purity and abstinence. As a young woman who is waiting until marriage, I feel that it is important to be an example that inspires young girls to make a positive choice as well. Adter the school-based program was so successful, I immediately developed faith-based workshops and

Do you ever or have you ever battled with self-esteem issues and how do you combat them? I definitely did. When I was a teenager I really dealt heavily with issues with my self-esteem because people talked about me behind my back in school. I was never bullied. I want to make that distinction; however, I did combat some of those things that we experience with our peers. When I entered college, I started taking the development of my self-esteem seriously. It really came from me going deep in my relationship with God, studying Scripture, and spending time in prayer. I also started creating, speaking, writing affirmations for myself. I became more conscientious about the type of girls that I spent time with. All of those things helped to shape me into a young who has vision, passion, belief in myself, and a knowing that I was beautiful inside and out. I’m still on my j o u r n e y, b u t t h a t h e l p e d m e tremendously.

TRAVEL

Stonington, Maine A Vacation Away From The Tourist Crowds My wife and I first discovered Deer Isle, Maine, about twenty five years ago. I had friends who recommended it and we were interested in experiencing the “real” Maine, not the “tourist” Maine. We drove most of two days from Philadelphia staying overnight along the way. When we reached Portland, we thought we were almost there. When we reached Elsworth, we were certain it was close by, but it was still an hour’s drive before we crossed the high green bridge to the island and another 30 minutes before we reached Stonington the largest community at the southern most tip of Deer Isle. You might say it’s “off the beaten path.” Nevertheless, Stonington is a charming little town with much to offer visitors and permanent residents. Deer Isle is home to 2,500 people year-round and the number more than doubles in the summer. The 28 mile-long island was once a major center for quarrying granite (some is still done) and many of New York City’s early skyscrapers and the Brooklyn Bridge are of stone from Deer Isle. Lobster fishing is now the main business here and like much of rural Maine people often have more than one job. Stonington’s block long main street, next to the harbor, has a food market at one end and the century old Opera House at the other (now an arts center and movie theater). There are a couple of restaurants, a hardware store, several art galleries, an antique shop, two small motels, and a real estate office. Summer rentals are big on the island. Our favorite restaurant is Fisherman’s Friend where they serve a delicious lobster stew. Lots of lobster without all the work. Its wild blueberry pie is the best I’ve ever eaten.

We were on Deer Isle over the July 4th and got to see the holiday parade at the island’s other little community Deer IsleVillage. It’s less than half the size of Stonington and has two streets each about a block long. The parade begins at the fire house and marches to the point where the streets intersect and makes a left turn. In another hundred yards, it turns around and heads back to the fire house. You see the whole parade twice, but don’t be late for its over in about ten minutes. The parade “Band” a ragtag group of various musical instruments and ages does not march, but sits at intersection of the two streets so the music can be heard the full length of the march. There were fire trucks, kids with decorated bikes, scout troops, and old veterans. The Haystack School of Crafts here attracts artists from across the country each summer and they always take part in the parade. This year a dozen artists were dressed as giant misquotes in handmade costumes. It was a big summer for pesky insects and the small crowd of spectators laughed and cheered loudly. Haystack is one of the treasures on Deer Isle. Although its only open to the public for its craft auctions, which occur in the evenings near the end of each two week workshop session, its well worth visiting. Fine crafts

(in various craft media) from workshop participants and faculty are auctioned off to benefit the scholarship program. There are many excellent bargains to be had by craft enthusiasts and lots of fun for all. Back in Stonington, a popular activity is taking the mail boat to Isle of Haut, a few miles away. A portion of the Isle is now part of Arcadia National Park and great for nature walks, bird watching, and hiking. There’s a lovely inn on the island where you can enjoy a delicious meal, but don’t miss the mail boat back to Stonington or you’ll be an overnight guest.

town. No need for last names, everyone here knows who they are. Its like that in Stonington, Maine. Learn more at www.dearisle.com www.stoningtonmaine.com.

There is golfing near Stonington at the Island Country Club. Rental clubs are available at this nine hole, 2,400 yard, par 34 course, open to the public. Stay on the fairway, however, since the rough is pretty much impossible to navigate. Tee times are first come, first served. Near Fisherman’s Friend Restaurant is a sandlotball field where locals of all ages play ball. After dinner one evening we watched a pickup game of young kids (both boys and girls of various ages and skill levels, who shared ball gloves playing field) who were too few for full teams. It was a delightful throwback to the past and a reminder of my own youth. Deer Isle has a new high school and each Spring graduating seniors (about two dozen) paint the first names of their classmates on foot long pieces of wood and nail them to the telephone poles along the road into

By Jim Weaver

But its hard to beat Eaton’s Pier at the north end of Little Deer Isle (there are actually two islands connected by a twisting causeway). They unload some of the lobster catch from boats here and will boil them for you in 50 gallon steel barrels with propane burners. You eat them at wooden picnic tables on the dock. There are no fancy tools to help you get to the lobster meat, just some grapefruit size rocks to crack the shells. A roll of paper towels helps keep you neat. Nothing fancy, just great taste. Every Christmas we buy fresh pine wreaths (handmade by Deer Isle women) for family and friends from Harbor Farm, a lovely retail business on the island. See <www. harborfarm.com>. An Open Letter To the Basketball Wives

Dear Basketball Wives,

and I do not believe that it is or has ever been conducive to my Christian walk. Truth is Jesus Christ is coming back and I can either get right or get LEFT. No, watching your show is not a sin; however, the Bible says “Everything is permissible”–but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”– but not everything is constructive. (1 Corinthians 1 0 : 2 3 ) . I h ave a p re t t y addictive personality and I can truly say that I’ve been addicted for the last two years. I can no longer subject my Spirit to the debauchery that you display weekly. I will not stalk to Vh1 site any longer to watch preview snippets of shows before they air. I will no longer follow Evelyn and Jen on Twitter to see when the next fight will break out. I have been making some pretty huge lifestyle changes since 2012 began and de-cluttering my mind is next on my list. I am striving to be the woman that Proverbs 31 speaks of. So Shaunie, Jennifer, Evelyn, Suzie, Royce, Meeka, Gloria, Kenya, Keisha, Kimsha, Draya, Malaysia, Jackie, Laura and Imani I guess this is goodbye.

First, let me say thank you for providing me with countless hours of entertainment over the years. I can honestly say that I was genuinely entertained, but as with all things in life change is constant and I believe that it is time for me to make a change. After much deliberation I have come to the realization that there is no way that I can move to the next level in my Christian walk while still holding on to you so I must let you go. Its not you, its me. You’re the s a m e re a l i t y s h o w t h a t portrays women in the most catty light possible and makes them famous for romantically dealing with professional athletes. I can’t lie, that is the perfect recipe for the great entertainment. The thing is that I’ve changed. I can no longer dedicate one hour out of my week to tune into the verbal attacks, drink throwing, and physical assaults that you continue to illustrate. I can no longer subject myself to the constant promotion of sex before marriage and scandalous behavior. I am in no way judging your characters; however Basketball Wives has become Signed, a constant factor in my life Jazmine Denise 14 New York Trend NYC

- “Look at me like a baby, like a little alien. Cuddle. Hold me.” - "Let's stop fracking. Who knows about hydraulic fracking? I'm like, whodie, get that oil out the ocean!" - “Appreciate every single person. Look at them like a golden, million-dollar baby.” - “Nobody in this building asked to be born. You didn't ask to be you, bro. I didn't ask to be me. I didn't ask to have this skin. I didn't ask to be who I was, bro. Nobody in here asked that... So when you see people, forgive them and accept, you feel me?”
