In honor of Men’s Health Awareness Month, the event highlighted the importance of preventative screenings and health services for men, featuring engaging discussions with South Florida legends Alonzo Mourning, Dan Marino, Glen Rice and Ed Jovanovski. Free and open to the public, the activation offered health screenings, raffles, autographed prizes, and other complimentary giveaways.
“Unfortunately, it isn’t uncommon for men to shy away from their regular exams and doctors’ visits,” said Jonathan Fialkow, MD, cardiologist and chief medical executive of Population Health, Value and Primary Care for Baptist Health “We are pleased to partner with Alonzo Mourning and the Miami HEAT team to help educate the community on these topics and hopefully encourage them to prioritize their health.”

INVESTMENT PROGRAM TO EMPOWER WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS
Breaking barriers and building dreams, the Southern Black Girls and Women's Consortium (Southern Black Girls), a leader in empowering Black girls and women in the South, today announced the launch of its new, innovative Dream Investment Program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to support and elevate Black girl and women entrepreneurs. Developed in partnership with Kindred Futures (formerly Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative) and also supported with a grant from the Kellogg Foundation the program will provide 25 current and aspiring business owners with financial investment, business mentorship, and entrepreneurial training and education.
"Launching the Dream Investment Program is literally a dream come true," says Southern Black Girls Visionary Founder, LaTosha Brown "This program allows us the opportunity to realize our mission of investing in the dreams of Black girls and women. Our work through this program will be a clear testament of our commitment to building radical futures, expanding opportunities and creating a supportive ecosystem where Black girl and women-owned businesses can thrive and be respected in the marketplace."
Recognizing the persistent disparities in access to resources and opportunities for Black women entrepreneurs, Southern Black Girls is taking a bold step to address this gap. The Dream Investment Program will equip participants with the tools and
knowledge necessary to build sustainable and thriving businesses.
"It was a natural next step to partner with the Southern Black Girls on the launching the Dream Investment Program. We are not only providing financial resources, but also fostering a community of support and mentorship, which we know is essential to strengthening the ecosystem," adds Kim Addie, Vice President of Strategy & Impact for Kindred Futures "We believe in the power of Black girls and women entrepreneurs to transform their communities and drive economic growth."
Rising above reports confirming that Black women and girls receive less than one percent of the $4.8 billion in philanthropic investments in the South, and recent data confirming that Black women and girls receive only 0.5% of $66.9 billion from foundations, totaling just $5.48 per woman and girl of color in the United States, the Southern Black Girls have made it their mission to raise $100 million over the next decade to financially empower the goals of Black girls and women. To date, they have already awarded $10.2M to 250 Black women-led organizations through the Black Girls Dream Fund and empowered 800 girls with $408,900 through the #BlackGirlJoy Challenge across 13 southern states - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and West Virginia.
The Dream Investment Program extends
Southern Black Girls' ongoing commitment to fostering economic empowerment and leadership development. This initiative activates the organization's Innovation Fund grant cycle, demonstrating its dedication to exploring new and innovative ways to support Black girls and women.
Interim Executive Director, Chanceé Lundy adds, "As a former business owner, I know firsthand the difficulty in obtaining resources to launch new ideas and the commitment it takes to start and build a business. Through the launch of our Innovation Fund and the Dream Investment Program, we will ensure Black girls and women who are often denied opportunity are equipped with the resources they need to start and sustain a profitable wealth building business."
The Southern Black Girls and Women's Consortium (Southern Black Girls) is a collective of Black women in philanthropy,
activism and girls' work, who hold deep roots in movement-building — LaTosha Brown (TruthSpeaks Innovation Foundation), Felecia Lucky (BlackBelt Community Foundation), and Alice Jenkins (Fund for Southern Communities).
Established in 2017, Southern Black Girls has become a disruptor in grantmaking and is positioned as a catalyst to fundraise and provide greater resources toward underfunded organizations that, intentionally, support and empower Black girls and women in the south. The collective leads alongside a diverse array of grassroots and advocacy partners who are dedicated to the mission and actively engaging in this work across the region. COMMENTARY JUSTICE FOR DAVANTE ADAMS MOVEMENT
On November 19th at 11 AM, a press conference will be held in front of the Cobb Superior Courthouse to address the unjust legal proceedings against Davonte Adams. This event will be led by prominent civil rights leader and social justice scholar, Sabrina McKenzie, NAACP Cobb County President Jeriene BonnerWillis, Cynthia Adams (Davonte's mother), and attorney Nefertara Miller
Davonte Adams, a reformed juvenile delinquent and dedicated community leader who mentors hundreds of youth through his nonprofit organization, was tragically involved in a fatal accident. However, the subsequent legal proceedings have raised serious concerns about racial bias and the misapplication of Georgia law.
Despite the absence of drugs or alcohol in his system, Adams was charged with a felony, a decision that appears to contradict state law. On November 22nd, Judge Charles P. Rose Jr. will hear Davonte Adams' habeas corpus petition, a crucial opportunity to challenge the initial 15-year sentence imposed by Judge Angela Brown of Cobb County.
We urge the public to join us in demanding justice for Davonte Adams and to raise awareness about the systemic issues that have led to this unjust situation. Visit freedavonte.org for further information or to donate to the cause.

Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.
If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.
Early screening of your cognitive health allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. We can help you learn about available resources.
Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments. For those who are experiencing possible early cognitive decline, we offer the opportunity to participate in ongoing research studies/clinical trials that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. Our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease — one of 10 centers in New York State — is funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

DUKE ENDOWMENT AWARDS $ 5 MILLION TO BOOST BLACK CHURCH STUDIES
Duke University has received a $5 million award from The Duke Endowment to bolster the work of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School, one of the oldest offices of its kind among all U.S. theological schools.
The grant will be used to recruit and support a senior faculty member specializing in Black church studies to foster research and field-defining work in an academic, theological context. “The Black church knows social justice; it knows music; it knows preaching,” said Edgaardo Colon-Emeric, dean of Duke Divinity School “This award from The Duke Endowment will allow the Office of Black Church Studies to elevate its nationally prominent role as a leader in the study of Black church theological and spiritual study.”
The Office of Black Church Studies (OBCS) was established in 1972 and led until 1977 by founding director Joseph B. Bethea, who later became the first Black bishop elected to the episcopacy by the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. In its more than 50 years, the office has served as a “house of study” for Duke Divinity School students exploring Christian ministry in Black church contexts and has served as a home for their spiritual and theological
formation. Duke Divinity School, where the office is housed, was founded in 1926 as one of 13 theological schools associated with the United Methodist Church, an affiliation it maintains today. The Office of Black Church Studies has a role in expanding thought and scholarship across Duke Divinity School, where coursework is required for all students pursuing the school’s three-year Master of Divinity degree. Funding from The Duke Endowment to establish the Bishop Joseph B. Bethea Professorship will enrich the university in myriad ways, particularly by demonstrating how Duke can continue to uphold its commitment to truth, reflection, belonging and learning from diverse experiences and formations.
“The Office of Black Church studies has played a significant role in Duke’s proud history of nurturing spiritual leaders,” said Duke President Vincent E. Price “This award from The Duke Endowment is an affirmation of the importance of scholarship and other
academic engagement related to the Black church, and will further solidify Duke Divinity School’s leadership in the field of Black church studies.”
The professorship will widen Duke’s scholarly ecosystem by allowing for intellectual growth and research that starts with the Office of Black Church Studies and stretches out across other disciplines. This has been demonstrated, for example, through the intersections of theology and the arts.
The office has hosted the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, founded in 1958 by choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey to support the African-American experience through modern dance.
“This Duke Endowment award reminds our campus community—and by extension, our alumni and donor community—of what we mean by the ‘Duke difference,’" said Dave Kennedy, vice president for Duke Alumni Engagement and Development. “I hope
this award will inspire more donors to support Duke’s efforts to recruit and support top faculty who can shape and inspire our students.”
Charles C. Lucas III, chair of The Duke Endowment Board of Trustees, said the Endowment couldn’t be more encouraged by the work of the OBCS and the opportunity to further bolster its national reputation as a leader in Black church scholarship. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand the scope and influence of the Office of Black Church Studies as it explores academic intersections across the university,” Lucas said. “We anticipate that the university’s intellectual culture will continue to grow and inspire the Durham community and the Carolinas through many new partnerships across the arts, medicine, nonprofit sector, and beyond.”
Based in Charlotte and established in 1924 by industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, The Duke Endowment is a private foundation that strengthens communities in North Carolina and South Carolina by nurturing children, promoting health, educating minds and enriching spirits. Since its founding, it has distributed more than $4.8 billion in grants. The Endowment shares a name with Duke University and Duke Energy, but all are separate organizations.
FOUNDATION TO LAUNCH ‘ CHAMPIONS FOR FINANCIAL LEGACY ’ PROGRAM
THE SHAWN CARTER FOUNDATION, with generous support from Toyota Motor North America, is proud to introduce Champions for Financial Legacy (CFFL), a comprehensive financial education initiative designed to empower students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and surrounding communities.
Developed in collaboration with The Coalition for Equity and Opportunity at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, CFFL is modeled after Professor Keith Weigelt's accredited curriculum at the Wharton School and Bridges to Wealth, a financial education and wealth-building program that Dr. Weigelt has offered to the Shawn Carter Foundation community of scholars and families since 2017.
CFFL is the latest initiative resulting from the ongoing collaboration between the Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF) and Toyota Motor North America, a long-time supporter of SCF's annual HBCU Bus Tour. With Toyota's generous support of CFFL, the vision to expand the program to HBCU students and local communities is made possible.
"We are excited to see our partnership with the Shawn Carter Foundation evolve to include this innovative initiative," said Monica Womack, general manager, D+I and community
engagement, Toyota "One that not only provides resources to HBCU students but also reaches the heart of the community, through advocacy for financial literacy."
CFFL aims to reduce the growing wealth gap by equipping students with the financial knowledge and skills needed for economic success and social mobility. Topics include budgeting, market risks and returns, mutual funds, credit scores, stock markets, and more. By fostering financial fluency and community engagement, the program seeks to change the trajectory of intergenerational wealth and build a more equitable future.
"Every day at the Shawn Carter Foundation, we dedicate ourselves to uplifting students and communities that are underserved," said Dr. Gloria Carter, Shawn Carter Foundation CEO and Co-Founder. "To launch a financial education program that will reach more students and communities, along with dedicated partners like Toyota and the Wharton School of Business, is a vision we are finally seeing come to fruition. We are so excited to see the incredible impact of CFFL unfold and look forward to its growth."
"One way to strengthen the resiliency of middle-class households is to increase their ability to generate wealth," said
Dr. Keith Weigelt, Marks-Darivoff Family Professor of Strategy at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and Founder of Bridges to Wealth "I thank both the Shawn Carter Foundation and Toyota for their foresight in addressing a long-neglected social disparity."
The curriculum includes real-world applications and service-learning components, allowing students to apply their financial knowledge in community settings, thereby expanding the ecosystem of wealth-building and fostering local development.
"The Wharton Coalition for Equity and Opportunity (CEO) is pleased to partner with the Shawn Carter Foundation and Toyota in launching the financial
legacy program with several HBCUs. This partnership will help us remain committed to closing the wealth gap through an evidence-based approach," said Dr. Fareeda Griffith, CEO managing director.
The inaugural CFFL program will be implemented in Spring 2025 at Lincoln University, Norfolk State University, and Virginia State University, with plans to expand to other HBCUs University-appointed faculty from each school will receive free professional development training, and trained student ambassadors will amplify the Champions for Financial Legacy course offerings on their respective campuses for enrollment.

If you are anywhere in your journey with substance use disorder,
I want you to stop, look around and open your heart.
Revel in the abundance of your existence. See how small substance use disorder can be when sat next to all that you are or ever could be.
Fill your existence with beauty, purpose and a life of service.
And your substance use disorder— your history of addiction, the things you may have done that you are not proud of—will one day be small enough to deal with while allowing you space to live this life of joy.
Hold on.
We are not the sum of our scars but rather a beautiful mosaic of the life they hold together.
