A
ny seasoned small business owner knows, if you don’t bend you will not just break, you will fail. In over nearly three decades of owning New York Trend Newspaper, I have learned many lessons along the way. Some were encouraging and rewarding and served to validate my leadership skills and ability to weather the financial and personnel storms. It has been almost 30 years, of devastating lows, middle ground years of survival and adrenaline pumping highs. Yet, there is no greater feeling for a business owner than when a plan comes together. Well, recently, I received confirmation that a plan came together. It could be called luck, but I believe it is more like fate. I had a position to fill and the right person was there looking for a position. The unveiling of this plan also confirmed a belief I learned about ten years after founding New York Trend. That most important lesson was that there comes a time when you have to let go of the baby and let them take their first steps. Another lesson was that the baby grows into a child, the child into an adult and just like that you cannot keep complete control of what you have given birth to, nurtured, cried over, laughed about and beamed with pride on certain perfect days. New York Trend was just a gleam in my eye 30 years ago. It was a risk and a dream that I hoped I could convince others to sign on to build this publication. I owe much of my success to knowing when to give the baby over and watch what younger versions of myself could do with what I created. And it worked each time. New York Trend has had many young women step into the shoes of Editor-In-Chief. I remember each one and how they molded and made Trend into something almost brand new and as with our children, each one graduated to bigger and better things. Did I bristle each time I heard those devastating words that “I am leaving?” Yes. Absolutely. But thanking them for time well served instead of showing anger or jealousy for their new opportunities, has allowed me to still have great relationships with these women who have found their way to a career in media, communications and/or journalism. And it has happened again. Now not only is New York Trend 30 years older, so am I. My vision has always been to keep the Trend current, vital and valued in the field. Rachel Breton Hamlett, a well-respected and accomplished journalist, publicist and social media expert, begins her reign as Editor-in-Chief of New York Trend and newyorktrendnyc.com . I am thrilled to see where Rachel takes Trend as she follows in the footsteps of Ann Brown, internationally recognized public relations specialist and journalist; Felicia Persaud, international correspondent; LaShawn Francis, publicist, television producer and writer; and Zena Gray, journalist and editor. Community FUNDRAISING CONCERT TO BE HELD AT LONG ISLAND’S AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM On March 10th, 2013 YuGaCuRe (Yurumein Garifuna Cultural Retrieval) group presents a fundraising concert “A Day in the Life of a Garifuna Woman” at the African American Museum in Hempstead Long Island at 110 North Franklin Street, Hempstead, NY 11550. The event will start at 3:00 pm and will aid the cultural retrieval efforts in Yurumein (St.Vincent and the Grenadines), the historic homeland of the Garifuna people. The Garifuna people are a hybrid people of African, Carib and Arawak people who originated on the island of St.Vincent; but who spread to other parts of the Caribbean and the Americas. In 1797 5000 Garifuna men, women and children were imprisoned by the British on the tiny barren island of Balliceaux, off the coast of St.Vincent and the Grenadines. Eight months later they were exiled to Roatan Island which is now a part of Honduras. The Garifuna remaining in St.Vincent lost their language and much of their culture,

after the British ordered their soldiers to shoot to kill anyone in St.Vincent who spoke the Garifuna language that kept them at bay for many years. Miraculously the language and culture survived among the Garinagu (plural for Garifuna) in exile. The YuGaCuRe initiative to retrieve the Garifuna language and culture to its historic homeland of St.Vincent and the Grenadines is spearheaded by Vincentian writer/publisher Trish St.Hill and Belizean musician/singer James Lovell. This initiative comprise of a month long workshop in St.Vincent and the Grenadines which teaches Vincentian children and adults the language, music, dance, drumming, food and history. The official close of the workshop is marked by a visit to the island of Balliceaux where the Garinagu were interned. This concert promises to be an exciting and educational event. Kids Can Spend the Summer at the Zoo! The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Queens Zoo has opened registration for 2013 spring and summer education programs. The zoo has created a variety of interactive programs for toddlers to teens. All programs include age-appropriate hands-on science activities, animal encounters, exhibit visits, and arts-and-crafts. Some programs, including the spring and summer Teen Internship include meeting zoo keepers.

Education Joining Forces to “Pay It Forward” NBA legend and business mogul Earvin “Magic” Johnson, multi-Grammy Awardwinning musician, actor and philanthropist Common, and Black Entertainment Television (BET) chairman and CEO Debra Lee join forces with Coca-Cola this month in a movement to uplift and pay it forward to the next generation. Kicking off the second year of its signature program, “Coca-Cola Pay it Forward,” the world’s most recognized brand enlists the help of some of today’s leading African American history makers to offer exciting apprenticeship experiences to aspiring youth. Magic Johnson, Common and Debra Lee will serve as mentors, giving four lucky young people the opportunity to shadow them and their teams for a week during the summer. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.
