ny seasoned small business owner knows, if you don’t bend you will not just break, you will fail. In over nearly three decades of owning New York Trend Newspaper, I have learned many lessons along the way. Some were encouraging and rewarding and served to validate my leadership skills and ability to weather the financial and personnel storms. It has been almost 30 years, of devastating lows, middle ground years of survival and adrenaline pumping highs. Yet, there is no greater feeling for a business owner than when a plan comes together.

Well, recently, I received confirmation that a plan came together. It could be called luck, but I believe it is more like fate. I had a position to fill and the right person was there looking for a position. The unveiling of this plan also confirmed a belief I learned about ten years after founding New York Trend. That most important lesson was that there comes a time when you have to let go of the baby and let them take their first steps. Another lesson was that the baby grows into a child, the child into an adult and just like that you cannot keep complete control of what you have given birth to, nurtured, cried over, laughed about and beamed with pride on certain perfect days.
Circulation Manager Robert L. Taylor
New York Trend was just a gleam in my eye 30 years ago. It was a risk and a dream that I hoped I could convince others to sign on to build this publication. I owe much of my success to knowing when to give the baby over and watch what younger versions of myself could do with what I created. And it worked each time.
Emeritus Office & Subscription Manager Sophie Taylor
New York Trend has had many young women step into the shoes of Editor-In-Chief. I remember each one and how they molded and made Trend into something almost brand new and as with our children, each one graduated to bigger and better things. Did I bristle each time I heard those devastating words that “I am leaving?” Yes. Absolutely. But thanking them for time well served instead of showing anger or jealousy for their new opportunities, has allowed me to still have great relationships with these women who have found their way to a career in media, communications and/or journalism. And it has happened again. Now not only is New York Trend 30 years older, so am I. My vision has always been to keep the Trend current, vital and valued in the field. Rachel Breton Hamlett, a well-respected and accomplished journalist, publicist and social media expert, begins her reign as Editor-in-Chief of New York Trend and newyorktrendnyc.com . I am thrilled to see where Rachel takes Trend as she follows in the footsteps of Ann Brown, internationally recognized public relations specialist and journalist; Felicia Persaud, international correspondent; LaShawn Francis, publicist, television producer and writer; and Zena Gray, journalist and editor. As I initially stated, I love it when a plan comes together. My plan has come together for another year of keeping New York Trend exactly where I want it—always on top!

President Obama acknowledged the nation’s changing times by stating, “For we have always understood that when times change, so must we, that fidelity to our founding principles requires new responses to new challenges, that preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action.”

The Inaugural Parade featured eight official inaugural floats, sixty groups — including marching bands, mounted units, cultural organizations, and members from all branches of the Armed Forces of the United States. Since 1789, the U.S. armed forces have participated in this important American tradition honoring our commander in chief. During the 10day inaugural period from January 15 to January 24, 2013, armed forces personnel provided ceremonial support with musical units, marching bands, color guards, salute batteries and honor cordons. More than 8,800 people and close to 200 animals participated in the parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.
galas were also sponsored by a variety of organizations and held throughout Washington, DC. Now that the celebrations are over, the POTUS is busy back at work tending to the challenges faced by our nation. The political realities of Washington’s divisiveness are front and center as our leader tries to foster a new culture and reach across the aisle in an effort to do what’s best for the country. Time will tell, for President Barack Obama is writing history with this second term. At the forefront of our nation’s long list of issues is securing and stabilizing our economy. Our hope is that all of the elected officials in Washington will do what the people elected them to
Due to the economic conditions of the country, the inaugural celebration was cut back to include just two official parties plus a concert honoring military families. The Commanderin-Chief ’s Ball was provided free

The auditorium was filled with excited children, lining up with their parents to go on stage to pick out the toy of their choice. Children were treated to cotton candy while clothing and turkeys were also given away to families in need. In the gym, Let’s Rock the Hoops presented their Holiday Classic Basketball Championship game for the middle school students. “The Shark” Daymond John offered the 2 finalists some words of wisdom before the tip off. Team Deuce took first place in a close game. It is important that we inspire our youth who are still trying to figure out how to deal with the damage left by Sandy that has uprooted their lives. The second event took place at Ocean Village, which suffered heavy damage from the storm. Hundreds of toys, as well as clothing and turkeys, were also distributed in the Community Center to a host of residents who were looking for a way to enjoy the holidays

Both events were a success as many families left with food, clothing and gifts in their arms. “The Shark” Daymond John said, “I enjoyed Christmas just as much as Thanksgiving in Far Rockaway. I made a commitment to provide victims of Sandy a joyful Thanksgiving and Christmas and we have accomplished just that. I want the residents to know that we are truly here for them and will stand by their side through the entire rebuilding process. As we go into a new year through S-RAP we will continue to offer resources to those suffering from Sandy.” 204531A02

B
eyoncé. A single name that standing alone causes a stir. Unless you’ve lived under a rock for nearly the last two decades, you know who Beyoncé Giselle KnowlesCarter is and what she’s done. Question is: Do you have any idea where she’s going? For many 2013 was welcomed with resolutions and chances to start over, forgive and forget. But for the Queen Bey -which she is affectionately known as to her loyal Beyhive following- 2013 ushered in a slew of work. The epitome of “bear the children, then get back to business*”, Beyoncé, who literally bore her daughter Blue Ivy, just a little over a year ago is officially back to business. Her calendar is jam-packed and honestly, this is only what has already been announced to the public, who knows what other tricks Bey has up her sleeve. Here’s a rundown of just the first quarter of the 2013: Beyoncé literally set the Internet (and newsstands, mailboxes, bookstores etc.) on fire in early January when she graced the cover of GQ Magazine looking smoking hot after being named one of the “100 Sexiest Women of the 21st Century.” Inside the magazine her spread included a quite in depth interview with writer and GQ Magazine correspondent Amy Wallace and several amazing –and surprisingly provocative- photos shot by famed photographer Terry Richardson.
February 3rd Beyoncé is all set to take center stage during the Pepsi Halftime Show at Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans
This trip however isn’t about Beyoncé’s fine cuisine choices, but instead her performance at the Super Bowl XLVII in a little over a week. This will be her first halftime performance at the big game but not her first Super Bowl performance, as she did sing the National Anthem in her hometown of Houston during Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004. Rumors have been flying that during her set there will be a reunion performance with her former band members of Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Can
And how does one follow-up a racy photo shoot? By performing the capstone performance of a remarkable rendition of the American national anthem ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ at the 57th Presidential Inauguration ceremonial swearing-in of re-elected 44th President Barack Obama of course. Beyoncé serenaded the crowd of a number of spectators ranging from anywhere from 800,000 to possibly one million at the US Capitol in Washington, DC. But the fun doesn’t there for the Queen, no, at all. Just hours after wowing the DC crowd, the Carters (Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z) jetted off to New Orleans, Louisiana where the matriarch of the family is gearing up to perform the headlining halftime show at NFL Super Bowl XLVII on February 4th. Before heading to practice however, the power couple made a pit stop at Mother’s restaurant on Poydras Street in NOLA (Home of the World’s Best Baked Ham), according to a photo posted on Bey’s Instagram page (@BaddieBey). Reports later showed that the couple however didn’t have the ham, Beyoncé had calamari and Jay-Z had fish. NewYorkTrendnyc 8
Beyoncé’s self-directed HBO documentary special, Life is But a Dream, which will premiere February 16 on HBO.
you keep up*? Bey’s schedule will make you lose your breath won’t it? Moving right along and speaking of a Destiny’s Child reunion, the trio recently announced plans to release a compilation album entitled ‘Love Songs’ which will also feature a brand new unreleased single ‘Nuclear’ on January 29th. Bey is also prepping a fifth solo studio album. Rumored
(and confirmed) producers and collaborators include artists Miguel, Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo, Frank Ocean and Kanye West, along with super producers The- Dream, Sean Garrett, Pharrell Williams, Hit-Boy and Missy Elliot, just to name a few. Also on the music front, there is also a rumored tour for later in the year in the works. The Beyoncé show doesn’t stop there however, along with smashing live performances, and working on new music, she also has plans to open up her personal life –which is usually surprisingly very private for an artist of her stature- in an HBO documentary ‘Life is But a Dream’ premiering on February 16th. In the trailer for the documentary, we get a quick glimpse at Bey battling with just how much of herself should she reveal to the world, detailing her challenges with how to balance her work with her personal life and probably what the world wants to see most, her openly speaking about her pregnancy with Blue. We’ll even get a baby bump and sonogram shot. Can you say excited?! To say 2013 has come in with a bang for Beyoncé is quite simply an understatement. Always the consummate all around entertainer and after nearly two decades in the game, she shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Make no mistake about it, the Queen Bey takes her breaks whenever necessary and like an actual queen bee, she doesn’t actually do everything alone, but that’s what her worker bees are there for. What you should know about her however is that when the Queen Bey comes back, she comes back to reign supreme. There’s absolutely no half stepping the Beyoncé camp and all anyone can really do is go along for the ride or get driven over. If Beyoncé never ever teaches you anything in your lifetime, know that she was here. She lived, she loved. She did, She’s done, and everything that she wanted and it was more than she thought it would be. Beyoncé will definitely leave her mark and everyone will know she was here*...

all-inclusive international resorts to small quaint pensions. Considered one of the best resorts on this resort-filled island is the 750-room Riu Karamboa (www.riu.com/en-pt/Paises/ cape-verde/boa-vista). It is part of a Spanish family owned worldwide chain. I was amazed when I stayed here—it´s huge, unlike any hotel found in Africa--or North America, for
that matter (except maybe Disney World). An all-inclusive, you have tons of dining options drinks flowing all day and night, and a bucket load of activities—from traditional Cape Verde “funana” dance lessons to beach volleyball to great spa services (I had
an absolutely fabulous deep-tissue massage) to a late-night disco and live entertainment. You might be tempted to spend your whole trip here. Don´t! Get out and see this enchanting island. The hotel can even help you arrange various off-property excursion.
Prohibition is Subject of New Exhibit at National Constitutional Center, Philadelphia by Jim Weaver Less than a mile from my home is a friendly neighborhood bar, The Blue Bird. During the Prohibition Era (1920 to 1933) it was a speakeasy called Molly’s Tea Room and, as it is today, a popular spot for locals. When I’m there I like to think of how it must have been when Molly was in charge. I wonder if anyone actually drank tea. The recent PBS documentary series “Prohibition” by Ken Burns, exposed millions of viewers to the history of the period. Now the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia is the first to present a traveling exhibit called “American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition.” Its the first comprehensive exhibition about America’s most colorful and complex constitutional issue. Spanning from the dawn of the temperance movement in the 1830s, through the Roaring ’20s, to the unprecedented repeal of a 18th constitutional amendment in 1933, this world-premiere exhibition brings the whole story of Prohibition vividly to life. The exhibit features over 100 rare artifacts including flapper dresses, temperance propaganda, a 1929 Buick Marquette (mobster car), and original ratification copies of the 18th and 21st Amendments. There’s also a re-created speakeasy where you can learn to Charleston and explore the fashion, music, and culture of the Roaring ’20s. The show also includes films, music, photos, and multimedia exhibits including the dazzling Wayne Wheeler’s Amazing Amendment Machine, a 20-foot-long, carnival-inspired contraption that traces how the temperance movement culminated in the 18th Amendment. There’s also a custom-built video game where you participate as a federal agent tracking down rumrunners. America had a serious drinking problem in centuries past. Water was not always safe, but alcohol was. The Pilgrim’s ship Mayflower carried 10,000 barrels of wine for just 750 passengers and crew. People were drinking three times as much alcohol in the early 1800s than they do today. Alcoholism was rampant and it was destroying families and communities. Women, wives and mothers, took up the cause for “Temperance.” Spurred on by religious leaders the movement gained strength throughout the 19th Century. By 1920, there was enough political will not only to pass a constitutional amendment in Congress, but to get three quarters of the state legislatures to agree. What was initially a noble cause, turned out to have unforeseen consequences. People did not stop drinking, in fact illegal alcohol proved very popular. Saloons had been for men only, but speakeasies attracted many women as well. There was illegal money
to be made and organized crime began to flourish. After thirteen years, nearly everyone admitted that prohibition was a failure and the amendment was repealed. You might think it ended then and there, but there are vestiges of prohibition still around today. Today, in Pennsylvania, I can only buy alcohol from a “Wine & Spirits Shoppe” a state operated establishment of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. The Board was established shortly after the repeal of the 13th Amendment to tax alcohol and to make it more difficult to purchase. The are still cities and counties across the country that are “dry” where no alcohol is sold and no bars can operate. Legal age limits on the purchase and consumption of alcohol are also a throwback to prohibition. Organized crime is still around too in other forms. The exhibit “American Spirits” will run at the National Constitution Center, Philadelphia, through April 28, 2013, before embarking on a nationwide tour to Seattle, WA; St. Paul, MN; St. Louis, MO; and Grand Rapids, MI.
