NEWS KAREN HUNTER SHOW
C e l e b r at e s 5 t h A n n i v e r s a r y on Sirius Karen Hunter (https:// karenhuntermedia.com) (https:// karenhuntershow.com/)), popular talk show host, on Sirius XM Urban View (Channel 126), five days a week, 3-6 p.m. eastern standard time (EST) celebrates five years on Sirius XM with a top-rated radio show, launch of a new website, Karen Hunter Media, and first annual Healthy Wealthy Wise Retreat. Hunter is a change agent, influencer, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, professor, New York Times best-selling author and podcaster. Named one of the “Heavy Hundred” (The 100 Most Important Radio Talk Show Hosts in America) by industry bible Talkers Magazine, and (Woke 100 List) of influential leaders by Essence Magazine. Hunter, a popular speaker, recently delivered a powerful presentation on ‘Free-ish’ at the sold-out TedxHarlem. Karen has blazed a trail, bringing more action and less talk to the radio circuit. Hunter not only has some of the most provocative interviews, with some of the biggest movers and shakers in the world, she is also challenging her listeners to participate in the success they want to see and be.
“I started five years ago with a vision NOT to do a radio show but to create content that would feed the listeners,” said Karen. “Healthy, wealthy, wise is the underlying theme of every show. Five years in, we have not only accomplished this goal but have expanded our family beyond my wildest expectations. The hallmark of success is not in how big I can become individually, but how many other voices I can raise through this platform. I’m grateful to Sirius XM for having the faith and giving me the latitude to see this vision to fruition.” The Healthy Wealthy Wise Retreat is the brainchild of Hunter, who will serve as the keynote at the inaugural event. The retreat is scheduled January 10-12, 2020 at the prestigious Hotel Hershey, Forbes Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond Awards in Pennsylvania. Speakers include Jacquette M. Timmons, Money Behaviorist; Coach Cass, Love Coach, and Matchmaker; Joyelle Nicole Johnson, Comedian, and Emcee; Agnes Davis, wellness expert and swim instructor; Karen Taylor Bass, PR Yogi, certified yoga instructor; and other surprise guests. “Life is a balancing act and the reason why many of us aren’t living our best
lives is that we’re out of balance in some area or areas of our life,” said Karen. “My goal is to give you the tools to construct the balance you need to live the best life you can. The goal is to be healthy, wealthy and wise. For two days, we’re going to motivate and inspire and plant seeds in these areas with yoga, swimming, wealth-building seminars, wealth mindfulness and fun game night featuring Spades, Bid Whist, comedy and more.” The Karen Hunter Show has scored numerous viral highlights coupled with star power and A-listers. Hunter scored the much-anticipated exclusive
interview with talk-show host Wendy Williams, post-divorce and her return to daytime television. The interview went viral. Hunter’s show has become a must-do radio event for celebrities and politicians alike from Stacey Abrams to Tyler Perry, Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Nikki Chu, and Common. And her #TechTuesday movement created The Party of Lincoln app through crowdfunding which, has been the No.1 influencer in the #govtech space. “Over the next five years, we will be working to grow the seeds planted and plant new seeds for our listeners and beyond,” said Karen.
N e w Y o r k e r s R e m i n d e d E A R LY V O T I N G B e g i n s N o v e m b e r 3 r d Governor Andrew M. Cuomo reminded New Yorkers that early voting will begin on Saturday, October 26 for the November 5, 2019 general election. The eight days of early voting will make voting more convenient for voters whose professional or family obligations make it difficult to physically get to the polls, as
well as reduce waiting times and ease logistical burdens for poll workers. A central component of Governor Cuomo's 2019 Justice Agenda, this measure was signed into law by the Governor on January 24, 2019. This will be the first election in New York State with a period of early voting. "Too many generations of New Yorkers have been discouraged from exercising their right to vote, and this year we enacted a series of new measures to
fix that and help bring our voting laws into the 21st century," Governor Cuomo said. "Early voting is just one of the many steps we've taken to break down barriers to democracy, and I encourage New Yorkers to take advantage of this opportunity to skip the lines on Election Day and ensure their voices are heard at the ballot box." On January 24, 2019, Governor Cuomo signed a comprehensive package of
reforms to modernize New York's voting laws, including synchronizing federal and state elections to ensure that voters only go to the polls once to choose their nominees; allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote; and enacting universal transfer of voter registrations. These historic new laws were a key component of the Governor's 2019 Justice Agenda and were signed within the first 100 days of the 2019 legislative session.

For the 7th consecutive year, KIIH hosted a cocktail party designed to raise funds to eradicate healthcare disparities in breast cancer and to support survivor workshops that focus on wellness, beauty and fashion. This year brought together over 150 attendees: survivors and supporters of the work KIIH does. Nicole Cosby, a Technology Marketing Executive was the evening’s honoree. Celebrity DJ, Kiss the Deejay entertained the crowd, and Co-host of The View
and Truth About Murder, Sunny Hostin, hosted the evening. Kicked It In Heels (KIIH) focuses on breast cancer survivors, specifically, young women and women of color. “African Americans and other minorities tend to have a worse prognosis and lower survival outcomes compared to Caucasions,” explains Dr. Janna Andrews, M.D., and Founder of KIIH. “Additionally, I felt the support in survivorship was lacking. Thankfully there are more than 3 million breast cancer survivors but that means that the need for support is more important than ever. Kicked It In Heels is committed to helping survivors reclaim their lives and find their ‘new normal’. Any one who can assist in our mission is so appreciated.”

New Book Examines How BLACK VOTERS Have Been Misled In what is sure to be called a “controversial” new book, Rev. Bill Owens, President and Founder of the Coalition of African American Pastors, asks an important question: What has happened to prevent black Americans from achieving the dream outlined by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and other civil rights leaders? The book, titled A Dream Derailed: How the Left Hijacked Civil Rights to Create a Permanent Underclass, considers the many ways in which leftist policies wielded by cynical politicians have hurt African Americans and derailed Dr. King’s dream. From abortion and education to economics and the family, the policies embraced by the Left have been disastrous for African Americans. Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr states, “In A Dream Derailed, Rev. Owens does more than outline the harm caused by these policies. Using Biblical values as a framework, Owens demonstrates what African Americans – and all Americans – need to do to break free of the lies and find their way to the Promised Land.”
As someone who marched with Dr. King, Owens takes issue with the way many have fallen away from its Christian foundations. No one – even black leaders and politicians – is exempt from criticism. In A Dream Derailed, Owens writes: “Today, we find that many black leaders have forgotten what inspired that struggle. Many of these leaders urge black Americans to look for inspiration from government and political agendas that undermine the moral fabric of the Church – the same Church that guided the civil rights movement! Abortion, same-sex marriage, and government encroachment – which subverts religious liberty – are now all proclaimed as ‘freedoms’ by many black leaders. To be sure, the leaders of the civil rights movement saw these as evils and evidence of sin –not signs of freedom.” Part memoir, part-history, and part call-to-action, A Dream Derailed is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the reason why Christians and minorities are abandoning an increasingly radical Democratic Party.
AFRICAN NOVEL Harnesses Power Of
Childhood Memories Celebrates Success A single mother desperate to carve out a life for her son… a son orphaned at an early age. A legacy no one expected. Keleti Sanon’s debut novel is fertile ground for twist and turns. The author’s previous work, Another Chance Maybe the Last Chance, was a nonfiction title that included a call-to-action across the African diaspora. In his latest release, Sanon delivers fine storytelling ripe with the message of faith, hope, and reconciliation.
Bamo lost his mother at an early age and spent much of his childhood moving from home to home in the village, living with many mothers, proving the African adage, “It takes a village to raise a child.” An opportunity to move to the United States to continue his education presents itself and Bamo takes it. An unlikely friendship, social media fame, and the realization of purpose brings Bamo back to Oume with a passion to help the village he misses so much.
In The Adventures of Bamo, author Sanon introduces readers to fictional characters, Diaka and Bamo Toure. The mother and son’s stories begin in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and takes readers on an immersive journey through small village life in Oume, Africa to urban life in the United States. Sanon says, “The project was inspired by my life and the life of my mother. In many ways, the book is a blend of stories from my childhood. I combine real and imagined characters.” Sanon goes on to say, “Storytelling is a mainstay of the Mandingo tradition and an integral part of the community. I grew up hearing stories, and they birthed a desire to share my voice, culture, and heritage with the world.”
Sanon believes The Adventures of Bamo exemplifies the power of faith and hope in overcoming personal pain, and the power of forgiveness to help us achieve more than we ever imagined. He hopes people who are struggling to achieve and become more would see themselves in Diaka and Bamo’s stories and embrace the common themes of fortitude and perseverance. Through The Adventures of Bamo, Mother Africa comes alive, not just for African readers, but for readers from around the world who desire to know about his beautiful homeland, it’s people, and culture. Sanon encourages all to visit the continent.
Sanon does so beautifully in The Adventures of Bamo as he strikes the perfect balance between escapism and substance in Diaka and Bamo’s successive but often parallel stories. The heart and hopes of Diaka Toure were shattered when a romance ended in a cruel dismissal. Alone and pregnant, Diaka is disowned by her father. In an effort to save herself and her son from crippling depression she travels from the metropolitan city of Abidjan to the rural village of Oume where the university education woman she finds her calling as a teacher. Diaka builds a culture of learning in the small village, but then tragedy strikes and her dreams for the future are swept away.

Already, A Dream Derailed is garnering praise from Christian leaders and conservative activists. Ralph Reed, Founder and Chairman of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, said: “Rev. Owens is a patriot, a visionary, and a renowned and respected faith leader at a critical time in our nation’s
history. I strongly recommend A Dream Derailed for anyone who wants to be inspired and encouraged to keep fighting the good fight to restore America to moral greatness.” A Dream Derailed is set to launch on October 16th. You can preorder copies through the Dream Derailed website.

Well…I couldn’t find a book for them to read…so I made it for my kids and yours!” By grabbing kids’ attention in a colorful way, the Doc 2 Doc series

promises to complement a long list of initiatives led by Dr. Dale and his team to increase diversity in the medical workforce. It is written for children ages four to eight and exposes them to basic concepts in the medical field while teaching them simple biology. It’s clear that our community is dying to get their hands on this series. When Dr. Dale posted this on his social media accounts, the book shot up to become an Amazon best-seller in two categories even before it’s official release date. “It’s not even about pushing kids into the field of medicine,” Dr. Dale says. “I don’t even push my own kids to do that. I’m just showing them there are other cool things they can pursue beyond what they see on TV. Medicine just happens to be one of those.”

The New York State Harlem Art Collection was conceived in 1976 to draw the public's attention to art that celebrated the contributions of the Harlem art community. Then Senator H.
