ATLANTA MAYOR Raises $50 Million in Funding Homes for the Homeless Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says that her city has successfully raised the $50 million funding goal initiated almost 2 years ago to provide 550 homes for its homeless residents.

Atlanta has over 3,000 homeless residents and it was found that one of the biggest challenges has been to connect them to the available services to them.

To solve the problem, the city decided to integrate the rapid rehousing model which will quickly provide a temporary home to its homeless residents they could focus on rebuilding and addressing the factors that actually led to their homelessness and avoid becoming homeless again.

“It is a miss-perception that many people have: that homelessness is represented entirely by the people they see on the streets,” said Jack Hardin, Co-Chair of the Atlanta Regional Commission on Homelessness. “A far larger proportion of people experiencing homelessness have incomes and function at very high levels, but live on the margins of the economics of our society and any hardship can derail.”

California Becomes First State Sued by BLACK PATIENTS MATTER

A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed against multiple members of the MBC Medical Board of California and investigative police force HQIU (Health Quality Investigative Unit) for allegedly targeting doctors treating patients of color (Federal Court Central Division, Case No. 2:19-cv-03056-PA-JC). The jury trial has been assigned to the Honorable Judge Percy Anderson of Los Angeles.

The suit alleges California MBC finances non-racially diversified policing units and

hires medical experts and consultants employed at “whites-only” clinics and hospitals. “Change begins with us,” states BPM advocate Hanna Rhee MD, “just grateful to God and the underground railway for embracing our efforts.”

These reports present year-to-year comparisons from 2017 to 2018 based on data edited using the updated processing system for both years. In some cases, 2017 estimates may differ from values published in September 2018, which were created using the legacy processing system. The 2018 real median income of Asian households increased 4.6% from 2017 to $87,194, while the real median incomes of non-Hispanic white ($70,642), black ($41,361) and Hispanic ($51,450) households were not statistically different from their 2017 medians. The only significant difference between the 20172018 percent changes in median income for each race group was Asian (4.6%) and Hispanic (0.1%).

The poverty rate for married-couple families was 4.7% in 2018. For primary families with a male householder, the poverty rate was 12.7%. Differences in the poverty rate for married-couple families and male-householder families were not statistically significant between 2017 and 2018.

The South had the highest poverty rate in 2018 at 13.6% while poverty rates were lowest in the Northeast and Midwest (the rate of 10.3% in the Northeast was not statistically different from the rate of 10.4% in the Midwest).

Age Between 2017 and 2018, poverty rates for children under age 18 decreased 1.2 percentage points from 17.4% to 16.2%.

Poverty rates decreased 0.4 percentage points for adults ages 18 to 64, from 11.1% to 10.7%.

The poverty rate for those age 65 and older (9.7%) was not statistically different from 2017.

reportedly using his own private jet to transport relief supplies to the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas to help the residents who were devastated by Hurricane Dorian.

“To all the incredible people of the Bahamas who have welcomed me and called me an adoptive son, I want you to know that I am watching closely, and as soon as I can, I will be there to do whatever I can to help you rebuild stronger and better.

Soon after posting the message on his Instagram feed, Perry sent a private plane carrying necessities such as water, juice, diapers, sleeping bags, hygiene products, and more. The plane reportedly came back and forth twice the area to deliver the supplies and is still expected to return to bring more.

Perry, who owns a 25-acre island in the Bahamas called White Bay Cay,

reportedly also had seven people, including children and a pregnant woman, rescued to receive medical attention.

Hurricane Dorian, which struck the Carribean nation’s largest island earlier this month as a Category 5 storm, has destroyed homes and properties and even sunk the airport

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has

announced the honorees for its upcoming 11th annual ASCAP Women Behind the Music event, slated for October 9 in Los Angeles. This year, ASCAP will recognize artist/songwriter Victoria Monét (Ariana Grande, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown), Roc Nation Co-President Shari Byrant and Capitol Records Vice President of Artist Relations Britney Davis as major forces in the industry who continue to make an impact on entertainment culture.

TAMPAX Aims To Reverse Period Miseducation Among Black Women Even in 2019, period myths, miseducation and stigma are limiting Black women from receiving the information about their bodies, and their periods, they deserve. In fact, a new study by Tampax Radiant found 25 percent of African American women who prefer pads said they prefer them because they were not taught how to use tampons.

Moreover, 2 in 5 African American women wish they started using tampons sooner in life and 55 percent said additional information on how to properly use a tampon would be useful.

“Unsafe, uncomfortable, only for sexually active women. After talking with women in the Black community across the country, we saw these are some of the common myths associated with tampons,” said Melissa Suk, Tampax Associate Brand Director, at Procter & Gamble. “We found that 42 percent of Black women want to learn more about their periods from African American media and brands. We knew we needed to drive change, but in the right way - with the support of and knowledge from Black women themselves.”

Answering the call to provide information tailored to the community, Tampax Radiant launched #LiveRadiant – a campaign curated for Black women by Black women – and tapped menstrual advocate CeCe JonesDavis and OB-GYN Dr. Kiarra King to aid in reversing cultural taboos and reinforce the importance of having the right information while encouraging the community to have open and honest dialogue about periods.

“So many women are scared to speak up about their periods, especially if they’ve been managing menstrual related problems for years,” affirmed Dr. Kiarra King, OBGYN. “It is shocking to see the number of women who come to my practice and either don’t know how to use tampons, or aren’t considering using tampons because of incorrect information or myths they’ve heard. I’m a huge proponent of educating

For the third year in a row, Tampax Radiant will be heading to Historically Black

Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across the country to provide interactive educational experiences conceptualized and executed

by HBCU alumnae. The #LiveRadiant HBCU Tour will be making stops at four HBCU Homecomings, including Florida A&M University (October 5), Texas Southern University (October 12), Clark Atlanta University (October 19), and North Carolina A&T State University (October 26). At each #LiveRadiant HBCU Tour stop, attendees can learn the facts about tampons, ask experts CeCe Jones-Davis and Dr. Kiarra King all the questions they’ve always wanted to know about their body and their period, and pick up a sample of Tampax Radiant.

LaBrenda has been published in the AAHGS Journal as well as the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, among other publications. In 2016, she published A Guide to Researching African American Ancestors in Laurens County, South Carolina and Selected Finding Aids, a book that was widely hailed as a model for research in South Carolina and other states.

She was the mentor of ProGen 37, and the Salt Lake Institute on Genealogy 2019 Course Coordinator for “1619-2019: Four Hundred Years of African American Genealogy,” that institute’s inaugural African American Genealogy course She is also on the faculty of the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh and the Genealogical Institute on Federal Records.

today it has renewed for a fifth season Ava DuVernay's critically acclaimed drama series "Queen Sugar" to air in 2020.

Produced by Warner Horizon Scripted Television, "Queen Sugar" has been lauded for its powerful portrayal of an AfricanAmerican family in the Deep South and for DuVernay's initiative since the series' inception to hire an inclusive crew and allfemale directing team, many of whom were first time TV directors. Current season four showrunner Anthony Sparks returns for the fifth season.

The art gallery exhibition and related public programs comprise the Fall season of “CelebrARTE,” Casita Maria’s arts and culture event series celebrating the South Bronx community and the art it has inspired.

art displayed at Casita Maria, the exhibition examines a belief about or within the community– here, that beauty diminishes as skin tones become darker or hair becomes kinkier– and turns it on its head, with powerful depictions of Black women respecting themselves and loving each other.

Each artist celebrates Black womanhood in their signature style. Okamura combines his ‘realist’ paintings of figures with details rendered in collage, spray paint and mixed media. The exhibition will include work he created from photographs of four Casita Maria after-school program participants as well as giclee prints from his Begin Transmission and Urban Portraits series.

Why ATHLETES & ENTERTAINERS Can’t Solve Our Problems The big controversy about Jay Z and the NFL is a perfect example of why we can’t rely on our athletes and entertainers to solve the major problems in our community. Athletes and entertainers are just that, athletes and entertainers. They’ve spent their productive lives perfecting their skills, in order to be the best at what they do. They’re not as conscious as we think. We expect them to come together and pool their resources together, in order to create opportunities for our community.

Unfortunately they don’t have a mindset like that. For one thing, they get their money from people outside our community, which causes them to have a self-preservation mindset. They will only go so far in trying to support our community. This is what makes what Kaepernick did so significant.

How many of the Black players supported him on the field. You can only do so much when you’re afraid of losing your job or endorsements. This is what I mean by not having a Black conscious.

The NFL is 70% Black and higher than that, if you count the top positions in the league.

Yet how many players supported Kap on the field? If only they knew their value, by working together, they could have really made a difference for our community. But they are a microcosm of our community.

As a community, unfortunately we do the same thing, which is why our community

isn’t achieving on the level it should be. We don’t know our value either, but everybody else does. We’re also not as conscious as we think we are.

So if we don’t support our community in a significant way, how do we expect our athletes and entertainers to do what we aren’t willing to do? The problem is we don’t support the conscious Black organizations and businesses that can make a difference in our community. This should be the focus for our athletes and entertainers and our community as a whole. Until we start supporting organizations and businesses that are serious about solving the major problems in our community, that have a simple but well thought out live active plan, we will continue to have them.

There are some organizations out there who are trying to solve the major problems in our community, but aren’t getting the support from our athletes, entertainers, or our community. The solution is not relying on a few people who are a success financially, the solution is for us as a community to work with and support the people who are really trying to help our community become the best it can be. It would be great if these organizations and businesses received the support from our athletes and entertainers, which would give them a great start, but we can only go so far doing it this way.

“100 Questions Black People Should Ask Themselves” African Americans have struggled with issues of upward economic mobility, violence and mass incarceration for decades. The time has come to start asking the right questions to find permanent solutions to the troubles facing people of color.

Authors John Hall and J.D. Smith are doing something about the situation in their new book titled 100 Questions Black People Should Ask Themselves. The purpose of the book is to trigger conversations among African Americans about dealing with the major issues they face.

It’s a well-written book from two experienced people, who understand the importance of inspiration. Their message helps build a sense of empowerment and increased determination for positive change. The book is available on Amazon as a Kindle eBook and Paperback.

African Americans need to begin talking seriously about the issues facing them. One of the biggest challenges is the economic issue. Black households have only one-tenth the net worth of white households and the gap is growing. By 2053, the average net worth of black Americans is expected to be $0. If things don’t improve, the future prosperity of black Americans is at stake.

100 Questions Black People Should Ask Themselves is a book that asks pointed and thought-provoking questions that are well worth reflection and consideration. It shows that change starts from within, and there is a need to begin to transform situations in order to make things better for the future. It asks questions on empowerment, honesty, and the African American’s ability to create a world they want to be in, instead of begging for acceptance to be in the world of other

people. No one will solve these problems for African Americans except themselves so, serious action has to be taken to create changes that will usher in a new age of financial security.

We really don’t need them to support the community, but we as a community have no choice but to support the ones who are trying to solve the major problems in our community. Guess what, when we as a

community start doing this, so will they.

Although Marc is officially retired, he occasionally acts in Community Theater and serves as a fill-in radio announcer. He lives with his family in Jacksonville, Florida.
