ATLANTA MAYOR Raises $50 Million in Funding Homes for the Homeless Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says that her city has successfully raised the $50 million funding goal initiated almost 2 years ago to provide 550 homes for its homeless residents. Atlanta has over 3,000 homeless residents and it was found that one of the biggest challenges has been to connect them to the available services to them. To solve the problem, the city decided to integrate the rapid rehousing model which will quickly provide a temporary home to its homeless residents they could focus on rebuilding and addressing the factors that actually led to their homelessness and avoid becoming homeless again. “It is a miss-perception that many people have: that homelessness is represented entirely by the people they see on the streets,” said Jack Hardin, Co-Chair of the Atlanta Regional Commission on Homelessness. “A far larger proportion of people experiencing homelessness have incomes and function at very high levels, but live on the margins of the economics of our society and any hardship can derail.”

which was the last to contribute $114,000 before the city reached the goal. The other half came from the Homeless Opportunity Bond sale that began under former Mayor Kasim Reed. The city partnered with the United Way of Greater Atlanta to raise the funds.

The city announced its plan in 2017 after the city’s largest homeless shelter that housed up to 500 people a night had to be shut down due to health and safety concerns. Bottoms shared that she is excited to finally reach the goal which was started when she was still a member of the city council. She said, “This is one of the things I had the fortune of walking into when I was mayor.”

California Becomes First State Sued by BLACK PATIENTS MATTER

A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed against multiple members of the MBC Medical Board of California and investigative police force HQIU (Health Quality Investigative Unit) for allegedly targeting doctors treating patients of color (Federal Court Central Division, Case No. 2:19-cv-03056-PA-JC). The jury trial has been assigned to the Honorable Judge Percy Anderson of Los Angeles. The suit alleges California MBC finances non-racially diversified policing units and

hires medical experts and consultants employed at “whites-only” clinics and hospitals. “Change begins with us,” states BPM advocate Hanna Rhee MD, “just grateful to God and the underground railway for embracing our efforts.” BPM is represented by the Fenton Law Group of Los Angeles, supportive of racial diversity and religious tolerance. Simmons College, an HBCU in Kentucky, reportedly initially declined $1 million in scholarship funds that Papa John’s Pizza founder John Schnatter wanted to donate earlier this month. As a result, 10 students who were initially promised the scholarship were disappointed that they would no longer receive the funds. However, the administrators at Simmons College said an internal problem between the company and its founder is what really caused the confusion about the scholarship donation. “It felt as though someone has taken weapons of mass destruction and flown them into the hopes and dreams and aspirations of some of America’s most vulnerable students,” said President Rev. Kevin Cosby about the company’s apparent

that was recently released. “In light of recent news, it is best to decline your scholarships at this time and perhaps look at other ways to partner in the future.”

decision to no longer make the donation. The restaurant chain, however, claimed that the administrators at the college were the ones who rejected the scholarship funds through email.

“Thank you for our discussions on how to help support the students of Simmons College of Kentucky,” Von Purdy, Simmons’ director of development said in the email

Still, the college maintains that the email was sent only because a Papa John’s executive told them to do so. Despite what appears to had been a miscommunication, Papa John’s has reportedly made a donation of $30,000 to Simmons college that will provide 15 students with $2,000 scholarships each. Prior to that, John Schnatter, the founder and former chairman of Papa John’s Pizza, had reportedly agreed to donate $1 million to Simmons College and other Black churches. But that was about a year before he was forced to step down as chairman of the restaurant chain after he allegedly used the n-word during a meeting.

AFRICAN AMERICAN SPENDING POWER DEMANDS SUPPORT FOR BLACK CULTURE African Americans want more for themselves and from corporate America, and they express it with their dollars as they move through the consumer journey, from brand awareness to purchase, as revealed today in Nielsen’s 2019 Diverse Intelligence Series (DIS) Report on African Americans. It’s in the Bag: Black Consumers’ Path to Purchase explores the non-linear and uniquely technologically driven road that African Americans follow to make purchasing decisions, which ultimately maximizes both online and in-person shopping options. This path highlights several differences in shopping behavior and purchasing when compared to the total U.S. population. The report also includes deeper insights into how culture, socio-economics and business influences how, why and what motivates African American spending in a special co-authored section by advocate and media commentator Angela Rye, CEO and Principal of Impact Strategies. “At 47.8 million strong and a buying power that’s on par with many countries’ gross domestic products, African Americans continue to outpace spending nationally,” said Cheryl Grace, Nielsen’s Senior Vice President of Community Alliances and Consumer Engagement and co-creator of the DIS Report. “This year, we wanted to help brands and marketers understand the multi-faceted process that Blacks take to buy the products they buy. There are several drivers, but culture is at the center of them all. Further, with their love for technology, they are much more savvy and conscious consumers. They are as we say, ‘woke.’ They pay attention to how companies are speaking to them. As they spend more, they want more for themselves and from the brands they support.” Dating back to 2011, this is Nielsen’s ninth report highlighting the media consumption, purchasing habits, lifestyle interests and economic advancements of African Americans. It is the third in a theme, released by Nielsen this year following the comprehensive purchasing processes

of Asian American and Latinx consumers. Key takeaways from It’s in the Bag: Black Consumers Path to Purchase include: African Americans are welcoming recipients of advertising across all channels. However, while the trends of the Black buying power and overindexing in spending continue to increase, companies’ investments to advertise to them have decreased.  African Americans are more likely than the total population to agree that advertising provides meaningful information on most platforms, including mobile (42% higher), television (23% higher), radio (21% higher) and the internet (18% higher).  Advertising spend designed to reach Black consumers declined 5% between 2017 and 2018.  Physical appearance reflects a sense of cultural pride and self-expression in the Black community. This is evidenced by the top spending priorities for African Americans from everyday soap to luxury handbags.  African Americans outspend the total market on personal soap and bath needs by nearly 19% ($573.6 million).  Men are making an impact with grooming habits, outpacing the total market by 20% on toiletry items.  Blacks are 20% more likely than the total population to say they will “pay extra for a product that is consistent with the image I want to convey.”  They are also more likely to say they shop at high-end stores including Saks Fifth Avenue (63%), Neiman Marcus (45%) and Bloomingdales (24%). While online shopping grows, African Americans continue to head to physical stores for the personal touch and feel experience—but with more discerning eyes.  More than half (52%) of African Americans find in-store shopping relaxing, compared with 26% of the total population.  55% of Black consumers say they enjoy wandering the store looking for new, interesting products.

 When shopping, African Americans are more influenced than the total population by store staff (34% more likely), in-store advertising (28% more likely) and merchandising (27% more likely). The “for us by us” trend of Black-owned brands is profoundly impacting the African American path to purchase and consumer marketplace. Black consumers support brands that align with their lifestyles and values.

 African Americans dominate the ethnic hair and beauty aids category, accounting for almost 90% of the overall spend.  42% of Black adults expect brands they purchase to support social causes (16% higher than the total population).  35% of African American shoppers are more likely to agree, “when a celebrity designs a product, I am more likely to buy it.”  Procter & Gamble (P&G) is the largest advertiser in African American media, spending more than a half-billion dollars ($544.3 million). Five of the top 20 baby care category products come from P&G’s Pampers and Luvs brands.

These consumers are also passionate about the environment, wanting to buy safe, locally sourced food items.  African Americans outpace the general market on: Quaker grits ($19 million); Louisiana Fish Fry ($11 million); Glory Greens (frozen and fresh, $9.5 million combined) and Jay’s Potato Chips (nearly $2.7 million).  61% say produce is the most important category to buy local, followed by bakery and prepared foods (56%), eggs (55%) and dairy (52%).  Blacks over-index the total population concerned about food safety issues: antibiotic use in animal production (by 20%); artificial ingredients (by 19%) and GMO crop development due to climate change. The biggest worry is rising prices due to trade tariffs (68% Blacks vs. 56% total population). “Nielsen continues to unearth undeniable data and insights that highlight both the agency and power of Black consumers, and the plethora of opportunities that exist for companies that are focused on nurturing and empowering how they move through the world,” said Jonathan Jackson, former 2019 Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellow in Journalism Innovation at The Nieman Foundation for Journalism and member of Nielsen’s African American External Advisory Council. Nielsen uses U.S. Census data to determine population estimates that inform its U.S. panels and its understanding of consumer behavior. Given the rapid diversification of the U.S. population, an accurate census has never been more important. That’s why Nielsen has signed on as a 2020 Census Official Partner with the U.S. Census Bureau, and utilized census data to show the economic and demographic impact of African American consumers. This is the second time the company has leveraged this partnership for the Diverse Intelligence Series, after the 2019 Latinx consumer report, released in August.

TAMPAX Aims To Reverse Period Miseducation Among Black Women Even in 2019, period myths, miseducation and stigma are limiting Black women from receiving the information about their bodies, and their periods, they deserve. In fact, a new study by Tampax Radiant found 25 percent of African American women who prefer pads said they prefer them because they were not taught how to use tampons. Moreover, 2 in 5 African American women wish they started using tampons sooner in life and 55 percent said additional information on how to properly use a tampon would be useful. “Unsafe, uncomfortable, only for sexually active women. After talking with women in the Black community across the country, we saw these are some of the common myths associated with tampons,” said Melissa Suk, Tampax Associate Brand Director, at Procter & Gamble. “We found that 42 percent of Black women want to learn more about their periods from African American media and brands. We knew we needed to drive change, but in the right way - with the support of and knowledge from Black women themselves.”

Answering the call to provide information tailored to the community, Tampax Radiant launched #LiveRadiant – a campaign curated for Black women by Black women – and tapped menstrual advocate CeCe JonesDavis and OB-GYN Dr. Kiarra King to aid in reversing cultural taboos and reinforce the importance of having the right information while encouraging the community to have open and honest dialogue about periods.

“So many women are scared to speak up about their periods, especially if they’ve been managing menstrual related problems for years,” affirmed Dr. Kiarra King, OBGYN. “It is shocking to see the number of women who come to my practice and either don’t know how to use tampons, or aren’t considering using tampons because of incorrect information or myths they’ve heard. I’m a huge proponent of educating

I’m doing what I love and loving what I do,” said Bristol, who has an undergraduate degree in physical therapy degree from Florida A&M University as well as a doctorate in the philosophy of physical therapy from Nova Southeastern University. and empowering women so they know their options.” Tampax Radiant’s commitment to educating and empowering Black women includes the How to #LiveRadiant Playbook, a digital guide that provides step-by-step information on how to use tampons and dispels common myths about periods and period products in the community so nothing, not even her period, can dim her shine. The playbook comes to life with illustrations by colorobsessed visual artist Jade Purple Brown. “The only way to break down these barriers is to build awareness of the issue and encourage more Black women to learn, talk, write and share info about periods and women’s bodies. I am proud to partner with Tampax Radiant to do just that,” said CeCe Jones-Davis. Through #LiveRadiant, Tampax Radiant is committed to meeting Black women where they are, both online and in person, with a goal of creating safe spaces that remove the limitations that come with not having the right reproductive information. For the third year in a row, Tampax Radiant will be heading to Historically Black

Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across the country to provide interactive educational experiences conceptualized and executed by HBCU alumnae. The #LiveRadiant HBCU Tour will be making stops at four HBCU Homecomings, including Florida A&M University (October 5), Texas Southern University (October 12), Clark Atlanta University (October 19), and North Carolina A&T State University (October 26). At each #LiveRadiant HBCU Tour stop, attendees can learn the facts about tampons, ask experts CeCe Jones-Davis and Dr. Kiarra King all the questions they’ve always wanted to know about their body and their period, and pick up a sample of Tampax Radiant. Tampax Radiant will also be extending efforts to 14 additional HBCUs to provide access to period products and tampon education to college students when they need it most. To learn more about Tampax Radiant and the #LiveRadiant campaign, follow @ Tampax on Instagram and Twitter. Tampax Radiant tampons are available in stores across the country and online.

"Olympic Pride , American Prejudice" Film On Streampix!

From the writer and director of the award-winning and critically-acclaimed documentary Versailles '73: American Runway Revolution Deborah Riley Draper and narrated by Blair Underwood with executive producers Dr. Amy Tiemann, Michael A. Draper and Blair Underwood Olympic Pride, American Prejudice explores the experiences of 18 African American Olympians who defied Jim Crow and Adolf Hitler to win hearts and medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Set against the strained and turbulent atmosphere of a racially divided America, which was torn between boycotting Hitler's Olympics or participating in the Third Reich's grandest affair, the film follows 16 men and two women before, during and after their heroic turn at the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. They represented a country that considered them second class citizens and competed in a country that rolled out the red carpet in spite of an undercurrent of Aryan superiority and anti-Semitism. They were world heroes yet returned home to a shortlived glory. This story is complicated. This story is triumphant but unheralded. This story is a vital part of history and is as relevant today as it was almost 80 years ago. Since the 1936 Olympics was a well-documented event, this film will utilize the wealth of newsreel material, newspaper articles, photographs, personal interviews and neverbefore-seen footage as well as resources

from the personal archival collections of Olympians and organizations in both the U.S. and Germany. The art gallery exhibition and related public programs comprise the Fall season of “CelebrARTE,” Casita Maria’s arts and culture event series celebrating the South Bronx community and the art it has inspired. Learn more about the festival: https://www.casitamaria. org/gallery “RESPECT” is a multimedia exhibition that features New Yorkbased artists Timothy Okamura, Jessica Spence, and Nichole Washington. Like much of the

art displayed at Casita Maria, the exhibition examines a belief about or within the community– here, that beauty diminishes as skin tones become darker or hair becomes kinkier– and turns it on its head, with powerful depictions of Black women respecting themselves and loving each other. Each artist celebrates Black womanhood in their signature style. Okamura combines his ‘realist’ paintings of figures with details rendered in collage, spray paint and mixed media. The exhibition will include work he created from photographs of four Casita Maria after-school program participants as well as giclee prints from his Begin Transmission and Urban Portraits series.

Open Call for AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN to Pen Their Stories The Collaborative Experience is currently compiling a collection stories by African American male authors entitled, “Our Stories Our Voices: Black Men Speak Their Truth” (OSOV), which is set to debut in February 2020 for Black History Month. The book is going to be a treasure chest of life-changing stories written by African-American men who are driven to change the narrative of black males in America. Readers can expect to be uplifted and encouraged by stories of faith, hope and answered prayers, as contributors share how they overcame their tragedies and turned them into triumphs. “It’s time that we hear from our brothers who are doing positive things in the community and making a positive impact in the lives of others. This will be a welcomed new collection of history about black men,” says Toni Coleman Brown, Vice President of the Collaborative Experience. Contributors to this anthology

represent black men from all walks of life. They vary in age, cultural backgrounds and reside in cities across the United States. The coauthors are penning experiences about life, fatherhood, friendships, relationships business and social issues as well as negative perceptions that they’ve had to face in order to survive in today’s society. Readers will be able to relate to the stories shared in the anthology and will understand that they’re not alone in their life challenges. “Toni and I are on a mission of empowerment. We guide others through a writing process, which helps them to grow, and heal while sharing a part of themselves in the book! We believe in the win-win strategy of the joint venture publishing model and work extremely hard to ensure that our co-authors receive maximum exposure,” states Julia D. Shaw, President of the Collaborative Experience.

In the last five years the Collaborative Experience Founders, Julia D. Shaw and Toni Coleman Brown published four Amazon bestselling book anthologies. These books have included “Network to Increase Your Net Worth” and the three books in the “Delayed But Not Denied” series. Co-Authors who participate in their book anthologies receive a wide range of exposure including radio interviews, speaking engagements, and are featured during the book launch parties and promotional events. The anthologies have also been the launching pad for many of the co-authors who have gone on to successfully publish their own single title books. Collectively the two have over 40 years of experience working in various aspects of the book publishing industry. African-American men interested in becoming co-authors in this anthology project should send an email to collaborativeexperience@gmail. com or check out the website www.
