LOAN DEBT, CYBERSECURITY, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM AS TOP 2020 VOTING ISSUES Healthcare, immigration, and the state of the economy dominate mainstream conversations on top voter issues in 2020, but new survey data suggests a majority of black millennial voters will choose candidates based on their student loan debt, criminal justice reform, and cybersecurity policy ideas. The survey, completed by Beyond Ideas Group, an integrated public affairs company founded by a former Obama White House and Treasury appointee, received over 400 responses. 94 percent of respondents indicated plans to vote in 2020. When asked about their most critical voting issues in 2020, 57 percent listed student loan debt as the most important economic issue, 36 percent noted criminal justice reform was the most urgent domestic issue, and 59 percent indicated cybersecurity was the most significant international issue. “The data from this survey shows that much of the mainstream commentary around the economy or other policy issues hide the everyday realities and perspectives of many black millennials,” said Antonio White, founder and

principal at Beyond Ideas Group. “It’s hard for many black millennials to prioritize fear of a possible recession when crippling student loan debt or family financial obligations loom above their heads. Every day might feel like a recession.”
‘57 percent of respondents indicated student loan debt was the most important economic issue for the upcoming 2020 election as economists hint at another recession that could hit minorities hardest.’
parents. A majority of the respondents expected to provide some form of economic support to out-of-work family members in the future. “These insights suggest black millennials are economically stretched thin and not very optimistic about their economic futures even despite some having significant levels of education,” said White. “If another recession comes, this group will be among the hardest hit.” Economists back up these claims and predict another economic downtown could head the United States’ way. When the Great Recession ended in 2009, the median income for black households fell by 66 percent compared
to just 16 percent for white families. White expressed policy hopes for this survey, stating “with the threat of another recession, our goal is that this survey will prompt deeper conversation, more robust data, and, most importantly, policy change that protects our citizens and preserves the American Dream for all.” The survey also posed questions on workforce diversity and inclusion experiences, but this data was not included in this report. For more information or to download the report, visit https://www.beyondideasgroup. com/millennials.
The survey also asked respondents to describe their individual financial situations, including education, annual income, employment status, investments and assets, and overall debt. It also sought insight into generational wealthbuilding by gauging the degree to which black millennials would need to provide financial resources to aging or retiring

Conversations on Diversity & Inclusion Take CENTER STAGE
The award-winning CoachDiversity Institute (CDI) has garnered national recognition and applause from corporate leaders over the past few years. It is being hailed as the only institution in the United States that combines the transformational power of coaching with diversity, inclusion and leadership training! In wake of discouraging and discriminatory remarks that are reported daily on our local and cable news networks and on social media regarding race, religion and sexual orientation, conversations on workplace diversity, inclusion and equity have escalated tremendously! In response, countless industry and community leaders who value the uncompromising need for tolerance have invested their resources into professional training to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. Their solution: CoachDiversity Institute! Individuals who have enrolled in courses offered by CoachDiversity Institute have proven their worth time and time again. In this new era of race, religion and sex discrimination, CDI's mission is to offer a high-value program that caters to the needs of individuals and organizations

regardless of industry. From doctors to executives, teachers to pastors, and law enforcement officers to politicians, executive coaching is being embraced and executed by companies as an absolute necessity! "Coaching is the missing link for true culture change," says Dr. Towanna Burrous, founder and president of CoachDiversity Institute. "Whether you seek to optimize performance or cultivate meaningful inclusion, you have to invest in the people that drive that change." This year, the organization announced a partnership with Howard University, the nation's premier private, research intensive and historically Black university. Steeped in a culturally diverse heritage that spans more than 150 years, Howard values the importance of merging legacy with contemporary and is invested in employing new strategies that will empower its staff and ultimately students to advance and celebrate the coexistence of people from all backgrounds. CDI is currently working with other high-profile companies including Groupon, the Air National Guard and Automatic to enhance diversity training through highly effective coaching with the intent to elevate leadership on a global level for their respective organizations. CDI's mission is to train industry leaders who are committed to developing successful coaching competencies, diversity and inclusion integration and leadership skills throughout their work environments.

VACCINES Are Safe , Effective & Keep Our Kids Healthy
As parents and children prepare to go back to school, the Health Department is reminding New Yorkers about the importance of vaccines with a new ad campaign. The campaign “Don’t Hesitate. Vaccinate!” reminds parents and guardians to get their children vaccinated on time. The campaign will run online, in bus shelters, subways, and in local newspapers in English, Spanish, Yiddish, and Traditional and Simplified Chinese. A video version of the campaign featuring Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot will run online in English and Spanish. “Vaccines are one of the best tools we have to prevent and reduce infectious diseases that cause sickness, hospitalization, and even death,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “Unfortunately, misinformation about the safety and efficacy of vaccines has caused some to delay or refuse vaccination. It’s crucial that all New Yorkers protect themselves and their loved ones against these preventable diseases by getting vaccinated.”
Vaccination not only protects the person receiving the vaccine, it also helps prevent the spread of disease and protects those most vulnerable to serious complications, including infants and young children, the elderly, pregnant persons and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems who may not be able to get vaccinated. With school approaching, the Health Department also reminds parents that vaccines are required for children to attend child care and schools. Beginning this school year, all children attending school or child care in New York City must receive all scheduled vaccines unless they have a valid medical exemption. Under a new state law, religious exemptions will no longer be accepted in place of vaccination.
Vaccination Recommendations Everyone 6 months of age and older, should receive an annual flu vaccine. Pregnant persons should get the flu and Tdap vaccines to protect themselves and their newborns from influenza and other infections. Children are recommended to receive vaccines protecting them against harmful diseases such as measles, mumps, chicken pox (varicella), invasive pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae disease and whooping cough by 18 months. Starting at age 4 children entering kindergarten need two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps
and rubella) and chickenpox vaccines, and a DTaP and polio booster. Adolescents also need the HPV vaccine to protect against HPV-related cancers, the meningitis vaccine to protect against bacteria and viruses that cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and the Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. Adults need a Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis if they did not get one as a child. All adults need a tetanus booster shot every 10 years. Adults at high risk for acquiring hepatitis A virus (HAV) need hepatitis A vaccine. Those at high risk include: travelers to countries where HAV is common, men who have sex with other men (MSM), people who use recreational drugs, those with unstable housing or who experience homelessness and people with chronic or long-term liver disease such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection. Adults at high risk for acquiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) need hepatitis B vaccine. Risk factors for acquiring HBV include: those whose sex partners have hepatitis B, MSM, those who inject drugs, travelers to countries where HBV is common, people with hepatitis C virus infection, those with chronic liver disease, individuals with HIV and people who are in jail or prison. Adults 50 years and older need the shingles (herpes zoster) vaccine. Adults with certain medical conditions and those who are 65 years and older need to be vaccinated against pneumococcal disease.
Within the last 10 years, communities throughout New York City have experienced outbreaks of meningococcal disease, pertussis (whooping cough),mumps, measles and hepatitis A. Every year, more New Yorkers die from influenza and pneumonia than from any other infection. Despite the effectiveness and importance of vaccines, only about three-quarters of young children ages 19 months to 3 years have received all recommended vaccines. Low vaccine coverage is associated with an increased risk of transmission of vaccinepreventable diseases and outbreaks. Adolescents should receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to protect against six HPV-related cancers, tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough vaccine (Tdap) and meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccine, at the same visit and on
time at 11 years of age. Adults should speak to their doctors about the vaccines they need based on their age and risk factors and about keeping their vaccine records upto-date by using the Citywide Immunization Registry. “As parents our first priority should be to keep our children healthy and one of the most crucial ways to do that is to vaccinate against infectious diseases. Vaccinating your school age children keeps them safe and contributes to overall public safety. Thank you to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for your outreach efforts on this important issue,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “I commend the efforts of the New York City Department of Health for reminding
agree that vaccination is the best way to protect children from preventable childhood disease,” said State Senator Simcha Felder. “Before the kids head back to school, I strongly encourage everyone to ensure that kids are up to date on their vaccines.” Assembly Member Jeffrey Dinowitz said: “Protecting the health of our children must be a top priority, and that is exactly what the recent change in state law around school vaccine requirements accomplishes. Everyone who is medically able to get vaccinated must do so before attending school with other people’s kids. That is how we stop the spread of preventable diseases, protecting the most vulnerable among us – particularly those with compromised immune systems or those who are too young
New Yorkers about the importance of getting vaccinated, especially as children are preparing to start the new school year,” said State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Chair of the Senate Health Committee. “Vaccines save lives so I urge my fellow New Yorkers to visit their local health care providers promptly and get the necessary vaccinations to protect their health in the short and long term.” “Vaccines save lives. As a parent, I know my husband and I will be speaking to our pediatrician to make sure our young daughters are up to date on their shots before they start the school year,” said State Senator Brad Hoylman. “I’m grateful to Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, state Department of Health Commissioner Zucker, and NYC DOHMH Commissioner Barbot for their leadership on this vital issue of public health and safety.” “The medical community resoundingly
to get vaccinated.” “As our children head back to school, it is critical that parents know that vaccines are safe, effective and are required for all students who attend school in New York City,” said Council Member Mark Levine, Chair of the Committee on Health. “Making sure your children are properly vaccinated in time for the school year will not only prevent them from missing class time but will also protect your family and your community from infectious diseases. We want to be clear that the misinformation being circulated about vaccines not being safe is completely false and not supported by medical research. All parents should feel confident and secure in vaccinating their children.” Vaccines are recommended throughout the lifespan based on age, lifestyle, occupation, travel destinations, medical conditions and vaccines received in the past.

that mothers, fathers and babies deserve,” says Kiddada Green, founder and executive director of BMBFA, which also serves as the anchor organization for the Black Breastfeeding Caucus,“We are excited about community-led transformation.” The event kicks off on August 24th at 8:30am at WeWork Detroit, located at 19 Clifford St., Detroit, MI, 48226. In the U.S, roughly 6 out of every 1,000 babies die before their first birthday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Detroit, that number has been closer to 14 in recent years. Similarly, black breastfeeding rates lag national averages, with only 30% of black infants in Michigan being exclusively breastfed through three months, compared to 47% nationally.

“Our experience in the community and years of data tell us that birth and breastfeeding are in deep need of co-designed, community-led solutions and the application of tech models to generate new ideas to address lingering racial disparities,” notes Green. “We cannot wait any longer,” she added. The hackathon will also feature three Family Innovation Teams from Detroit, led by Harambee Care executive director, Anjanette Davenport Hatter. The FIT’s are comprised of local community members affiliated with organizations such as Brilliant Detroit and Focus: HOPE, and are bringing problems to be “hacked” and creative solutions to further develop at the event.

EDUCAT ION
STUDENT ACES NONPROFIT Hosts Workshop
Just in time for school to start, about 55 coaches at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami did some learning of their own with the help of the Student ACES (athletics, community, education) nonprofit.
Founded in 2013 by Buck Martinez and his daughter, Krissy Webb, the nonprofit works to inspire and develop high school student athletes to become young men and women of character, honor and integrity. The nonprofit hosts workshops at high schools across South Florida, with the support of Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), and has already mentored about 4,700 students since January. “FPL supports organizations that break down barriers to opportunities for students; after all, these young men and women are the state’s future leaders and it’s critical they have the tools to thrive,” said Pam Rauch, FPL’s vice president of external affairs and economic development.
In the past two years alone, with the support of FPL, Student ACES has mentored roughly 4,000 students in Miami-Dade County. But the Columbus workshop, held Aug. 8, was different. This time, the school principal, David Pugh, asked Martinez to host a workshop for the coaches. “It was an awesome experience for the coaches to interact and work through some of the tough issues they wrestle with in the classroom and the athletic fields,” said Pugh. Martinez enforced with the coaches the importance of teaching the students core values so they can continue that learning even when Student ACES isn’t there with the teens. Each coach received a copy of Martinez’s latest book, “Man Up: Leading a Life of Honor” to help keep the learning going.

“A lot of these coaches will spend more time with the children than the actual father or parent, so they
Martinez said he hopes this Columbus workshop is the first of many to be held with coaches. And, of course,
The workshop was also special for two reasons: Martinez is a proud 1976 Columbus graduate who has a tremendous admiration for the academic and athletic culture of the school, and Martinez brought along Charles Johnson, the former Miami Marlins catcher who is a member of Student ACES’ board of directors. “I brought Charles because I wanted to have the coaches hear from a player. I wanted him to talk about little league, high school, college and the professional level and the values a coach should be teaching,” Martinez said. “The coaches loved him.”
