N AT ION AL E X P O 2020 Spotlights Most Promising Diverse Talent Industries BASE 11’S NEXT FRONTIER CONFERENCE & EXPO 2020 welcomed over 500 students and industry leaders from across the country on Nov. 10-11, gathering virtually via the 3D event platform Intrado. The conference was also simulcast to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and California Community Colleges. Next Frontier Conference & Expo 2020 introduces and explores “The Next Frontier” industries of the 21st century — ones that are likely to be the fastest-growing and most financially rewarding for the next 30 years — with an emphasis on helping women and underrepresented minorities on pathways to careers and entrepreneurship in these fields. The Next Frontier conference is the flagship annual event of Base 11’s Next Frontier Initiative, a 10-year strategic effort to put 100,000 students, early career adults and entrepreneurs on their pathway to success in Next Frontier industries. Through a partnership with Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, a.k.a. the Boulé, the first and oldest African American Greek-letter Fraternal organization, students from more than 20 Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) have been invited to attend the conference. “Even though I’ve been to space and I’ve been on tv commenting on this summer’s Dragon Crew launch, speaking at the Next Frontier Conference holds a special place in my heart, because this is all about empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators and explorers,” said Leland Melvin, astronaut, and Base 11 spokesperson. “We’re going to expand their access, awareness and belief by showing these students diverse leaders who look like them and come from backgrounds that might be similar to their own, so that they can actually envision themselves in those careers.” At the event, industry leaders will share insights about emerging career opportunities in fintech, aerospace, life sciences and other emerging industries. More than 45 featured speakers include: Leland Melvin, astronaut; Corporate Director, BWX Technologies Inc; National Spokesperson, Base 11 Gwynne Shotwell, President & COO, SpaceX

Highlights of the two days of programming include: STEM CAREER PLAYBOOK. Conference attendees will get a first look at the STEM Career Playbook, a series of videos featuring Melvin interviewing industry leaders about what inspired them on their career path, and how they overcame challenges along the way. New Children’s Book Series Presents AFRICA TRAVEL ADVENTURES Author, playwright, and philanthropist Jay Cameron introduces two books in a series about the amazing adventures of twins Darren and Destiny as they travelled to African diaspora destinations around the world. Jay Cameron drew on his experience after his life-changing trip to Ghana to write seven children’s books about the beauty, culture, and history of several countries in Africa. Much of the information he was taught about Africa was inaccurate, negative and misleading. He was inspired to share his first-hand experiences with children and offer an accurate portrayal about one of the most beautiful continents in the world. This series was written for ages six through ten, yet all ages can learn about the popular landmarks and the traditions of the people. In The Adventures of Darren and Destiny:

"I'm truly excited about the release of the book and what's looking like a global impact as I've had individuals in the UK, Jamaica, Africa and more personally message me stating that they can't wait to get the book in their hands. I spent a year writing this book and the process of writing led me to do a lot of self-reflection of my journey. It is so easy for anyone to get out of alignment with their purpose in an effort to secure the bag. This book focuses on how we can strengthen our spiritual journey, yet use wisdom to be better entrepreneurs especially when it is aligned with our purpose. This book is for those who are feeling lost as faithbased entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders. AL ROKER Reveals He Has Prostate Cancer : “IT’S A GOOD-BAD THING”
AL ROKER, the long-time co-anchor on the TODAY Show and arguably one of America’s favorite weathermen, announced today that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will be undergoing surgery to have his prostate removed. The 66-year-old explained he wanted to publicly reveal his diagnosis to shed light on this disease that has and still is disproportionally affect Black men. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that one in 7 African American men, 1 in 9 men overall, will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. “The problem for African American men is that any number of reasons from genetics to access to health care, and so we want to make it available and let people know they got to get checked,” Al said on TODAY. The detection of Al’s prostate cancer began with a routine physical when his doctor discovered he had an elevated
prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in his bloodwork. That led to him getting an MRI, followed by a biopsy, to confirm his diagnosis. “When he started, he closed his door and said, ‘I always like to have these discussions face to face,'” Al said. “And I was like, ‘Uh-oh. Well, that doesn’t sound good.'” The father of three confessed, “You hear the word ‘cancer’ and your mind goes, it’s the next level, you know?” Detection is key for anyone who may be diagnosed with prostate cancer, especially Black men. Knowing the symptoms is also key to even thinking that you should get checked in order for it to be detected. SYMPTOMS ----Urinary Symptoms A need to urinate frequently, especially at night Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine A weak or interrupted flow of urine
Painful or burning urination Hematuria (blood in the urine) Erectile and Ejaculatory Symptoms Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection Painful ejaculation Blood in the semen Decreased volume of ejaculation (though hydration, diet and frequency of ejaculation are more likely than prostate cancer to impact the volume of fluid)
Lower Extremity Symptoms Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips or upper thighs Swelling in the lower extremities If a patient experiences bone pain and swelling in the lower extremities— especially when accompanied by urinary, erectile or ejaculation dysfunction—these could be symptoms of advanced prostate cancer.

NAACP CALLS PRES 2020 ELECTION OUTCOME HISTORIC STATEMENT AGAINST RACISM AND BIGOTRY (cont'd from cover) the change is being driven by young voters of color. The data clearly shows young white voters are not particularly more progressive than older white voters. White Americans under age 40 vote for Trump at 55 percent— two points higher than whites older than 60. More than eight out of ten young Black Americans voted for Biden, which suggests their strong support for and commitment to ensuring the country delivers better health coverage, equitable economic opportunity, and comprehensive criminal justice reform. “Sixty-one percent of Black voters indicated that they or someone they know has been unfairly stopped or harassed by the police,” said Nick Turner, President of Vera. “Black voters are overwhelmingly concerned about

systemic racism, especially as it relates to the criminal legal system. We support shifting funds from policing to community and family support and we want to reduce incarceration—including immigrant detention. Regardless of the final election outcome, criminal justice reform should be a priority for the president and Congress.” More than eight out of ten Black voters expressed support for reducing the number of people in jails and prisons, and allowing people who are incarcerated to use Pell Grants to advance their education and training. An overwhelming majority of Black voters made it clear that police need to be held accountable for brutality and abuse, and expressed support for policy change and
reform, including banning choke-holds and strangleholds. Biden’s support among Black voters was not a given, which was evidenced by the results of the early primaries. The strong support of Biden among Black voters is the result of a strategic consolidation of the Black voting bloc and Biden’s efforts to engage the Black community. “People of color turned out overwhelmingly for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and white people turned out in a big way for Donald Trump. If Joe Biden wins, it means that a coalition led by people of color is now the dominant political reality in the US,” said Henry Fernandez, principal at AARC. “Most decisions Trump made as President and in his campaign were about

stopping this transition to a country that is no longer dominated politically by white voters. He’s trying to turn back this sea change in American politics—a progressive sea change that has led to better health coverage, a focus on police reform, and a House of Representatives that has fought Trump for the last two years.” The poll of more than 15,000 Americans who voted included 4,100 African American respondents from key battleground states, including Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin, as well as a national sample. Work can be fun, but not always. Some of us work in a place that may not fit our personality and sometimes we have so many tasks to complete that we feel overwhelmed. Maybe you’re that person who doesn’t like their job at all and you’re there just to be able to pay your bills and take care of your family. Whatever your situation, work can mean stress. It’s how you deal with that stress that determines whether you’re surviving or thriving at work and in life. Here are our 7 tips to have a better work week! 1 Make An Attitude Adjustment From the very beginning, adjust your attitude. Let go of last week’s drama, it’s not going to serve you any purpose. It’s not going to help you. It’s not going to help your co-workers. Just let go of last week’s mishaps. Walk in the door with a fresh and positive attitude. There’s nothing worse than walking through the doors of work and exuding a poor attitude. Whether you realize it or not, your attitude affects your colleagues just as much as it affects you. Set yourself up for success, go in with a fresh attitude. 2 Plan And Prepare The second thing is to plan and prepare your meals, especially breakfast. Many
BETTER WORK WEEK
of us have families and a great deal of our time goes toward getting them together. Mornings can get hectic and it becomes easy to skip breakfast. It’s very important to start the day by nourishing our bodies. You don’t want to have that mid-morning crash. You don’t want to go hungry and cranky. So just prepare the evening before so you have something to grab and go. 3 Breathe If your day starts to get hectic and stressful, just take the time, take 30 seconds, take one minute just to calm things down and just do some deep breathing. That will help activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is your rest nervous system, and it can calm it down. I’m telling you, just breathing can help a lot. 4 Make Your Bed Yes, make your bed. What do I mean by that? You want to start your day off with a great intention. You want to be able to say, “I’ve accomplished one good thing today.” By making your bed, you accomplish something that’s beneficial to you. When you look at a clean bed, you feel refreshed, you feel good, and you’re sure to have a pep in your step. Even if you’re day wasn’t the best, when you
finally make it back home at least your bedroom is nice and neat! That’s an indescribable feeling. 5 Get Restful Sleep We must be intentional about getting enough sleep. Making it through each day isn’t as easy without the right amount of rest. Without it, we go into work feeling tired, fatigued, and grumpy. This leads to poor work performance. We aren’t as productive and are easily distracted. 6 Apologize, Forgive, Keep It Moving We’re all human. We make mistakes. If you make a mistake, apologize for it. If someone apologizes to you, forgive them. From there, just keep it moving. It doesn’t help to hold onto grudges. It doesn’t serve anyone in any situation, and after all, there are bigger fish to fry. There are other things that will come up. So why add to it? Why add to the drama? 7 Laugh! The final thing is…and I’ll say it a million times…LAUGH! Laugh at yourself. Laugh at a funny situation that happened. Never at the expense of someone else, but find something to laugh about. Keep it light. Keep the mood happy. Tell a corny joke. I’m a big fan of corny jokes.
TMobile Launches PROJECT 10 MILLION Aimed With the need for equitable access to the internet more crucial than ever, T-Mobile has zeroed in on a bold goal: helping every single unconnected student in the U.S. get access to the internet connectivity they need to learn. In a video today, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert announced that the Un-carrier’s $10.7 billion Project 10Million commitment is taking a big step toward accomplishing this vision. The program is now live and available to school districts.

T-Mobile has a big goal – to deliver connectivity to every child who needs it across the U.S. Starting now with our historic Project 10Million commitment, we’re going to help open A LOT of doors to opportunity that might have previously been closed,” said T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert. “This issue is even more critical as the COVID-19 pandemic has completely shifted learning for many from the classroom to online. Big issues need big solutions, and that’s exactly why we’re not just launching but significantly enhancing Project 10Million and giving flexibility to educators so they can best address the unique needs of their students
with plans that offer more data. As the supercharged Un-carrier, we now have the resources and network capacity to deliver reliable connectivity to students across the U.S. — and to tackle the critical homework gap and the schoolwork gap head-on!”
As classroom learning continues to shift to online learning, the need for internet connectivity is growing. It’s a problem T-Mobile has been working on closely with schools, state governments and technology partners since the pandemic started. The expanded reach and capacity of T-Mobile’s network plays a crucial role in the Un-carrier’s ability to make reliable connectivity truly accessible to students across the U.S. This includes those in urban centers as well as under-served areas like rural America, where 1.7 million households do not have high-speed home internet service. Future Project 10Million recipients will also benefit from T-Mobile’s expanded 5G over time with faster speeds and even broader coverage. Project 10Million builds on T-Mobile’s — and Sprint’s — long-standing focus on education and connecting students. Prior to merging in April 2020 and before the COVID-19 pandemic, T-Mobile and Sprint had already connected nearly half a million students, and as COVID-19 started to impact

But T-Mobile didn’t stop there. In response to the unique learning challenges students are experiencing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Un-carrier is expanding Project 10Million by giving school districts additional plan options with more data to best meet their students’ current needs. This includes the company’s part in New York City’s plan to connect more than 350,000 students with iPads and data when classes resume virtually. And the Un-carrier has partnered with the California Department of Education and Apple to connect up to another 1 million students as schools across the state prepare to start the next school year virtually. “Since the start of the pandemic, T-Mobile and Sprint have worked hand-in-hand with school districts, state governments and technology partners to bring connectivity solutions to those who need it most, connecting more than 1.6 million students in less than six months,” said Mike Katz, executive vice president of T-Mobile for Business. “During the pandemic, we’ve had countless conversations with school districts and educators. We’ve consistently heard that they need more options that fit the unique needs of their students. We have expanded Project 10Million to tap into T-Mobile’s network resources and capacity, and take our support of educators and students to a whole new level. American Heart Association Provides Shares To Keep People FLU FREE The American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, is helping to keep families and communities safe from the flu by providing facts, resources and encouraging people to get a flu vaccine.

concerns about the flu vaccine, causing them to skip it altogether. Here are some facts: The vaccine does not cause the flu.
It is accessible even without insurance. Many community pop-up vaccination sites, federally funded programs, local health departments, community health centers and some places like churches and community centers offer the vaccination at no cost for those who qualify.
“Getting the flu vaccine is especially important this year. If you get the flu, you may need to be hospitalized, in this time of COVID-19, in an already overwhelmed healthcare system. Get your flu shot. Avoid getting the flu. Stay out of the hospital due to the flu,” said Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, American Heart Association Chief Medical Officer for Prevention and former Commissioner of Health for the state of Texas. “In a normal year, the flu is serious and can even cause death. The flu vaccine can keep you out of a hospital.”
While it is important for almost everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine, it’s especially important for those at highest risk: Seniors and people with underlying risk factors such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, among others. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), those 50 years-old and older, living with one or more chronic conditions, are at high risk for the flu. Those who aren’t vaccinated are six times more likely to experience a heart attack Children, especially those who are under 5 years-old and those who are back in school.

Yet participation in the very field responsible for this key task is far from universal, with African-Americans making up fewer than 3 percent of all veterinarians in the United States. To help build a more diverse, equitable, and an inclusive new generation of medical professionals committed to caring for our animals, American Humane, the country's first national humane organization, has created the "American Humane Scholars Fund" to support students of color in their quest to become veterinarians. An inaugural grant of $40,000, sponsored by leading animal health company Zoetis, was made this week to the historic Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. The announcement was broadcast nationwide on Monday during the American Humane Hero Dog Awards®: 10th Anniversary Celebration on Hallmark Channel.
