N AT ION AL PROHIBITING FEDERAL AGENCIES FROM CONDUCTING ANTI-RACISM TRAINING CHALLENGED Leaders of the Congressional TriCaucus — composed of Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-20), and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37) — issued the following joint statement on the Trump administration’s memo to federal agencies canceling anti-racism training for government employees:
“In the middle of a national reckoning on racial injustice, the Trump administration is trying to sweep our nation’s history of racism under the rug. It is profoundly disappointing but not surprising that the Trump administration is out of touch with what's important

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) is hosting a virtual symposium on Thursday, September 17, 2020 on the impact of COVID-19 among racial and ethnic minority and American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The Advancing the Response to COVID-19: Sharing Promising Programs and Practices for Racial and Ethnic Minority Communities virtual symposium will feature promising practices, programs, and strategies for combatting the pandemic in order to achieve health equity in communities of color. OMH invites our partners at the regional, state, tribal and community levels to join us as we convene public health leaders from state and local
to the American people and wants to terminate the federal government's efforts to root-out institutional racism through anti-bias training. From our nation’s original sin of slavery to state-sponsored segregation and discrimination through Jim Crow laws, to the murder of people of color at the hands of police today, structural racism casts a long shadow and still continues
to cause inequality and injustice to date. For example, the Trump’s administration's failed coronavirus response has exacerbated harm against communities of color and enabled the disproportionate deaths of Black, Latino, Pacific Islander, and Native Americans. The President of the United States has even used racist anti-Asian slurs to describe COVID-19 amidst
a nationwide rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. His words and actions have had deadly consequences. Our institutions, particularly the federal government, play a critical role in dismantling systems of oppression and creating a more just and equitable society. The Tri-Caucus Chairs call on the Trump administration to reverse its effort to end anti-racism training.” Since its establishment in 1971, the Congressional Black Caucus has been committed to using the full Constitutional power, statutory authority, financial resources of the federal government, community leadership, and international standing to ensure Black people have the opportunity to achieve their dreams.

A coalition of civil rights and social justice organizations concluded their two-day 2020 Virtual March on Washington programming featuring politicians, activists, and performers who set forth a bold new Black agenda, advocating for comprehensive police accountability reform, economic empowerment, and equitable access to health care, education, and the voting booths. The virtual march was a part of a series of events led by the NAACP, National Action Network, and a coalition of civil rights partners — including Martin Luther King, III and the families of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor — to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington. “57 years after the historic March on Washington — and amid an unprecedented pandemic and social justice uprisings — millions gathered virtually to call for systemic and structural reform. This is a testament to the collective power and passion of Americans fighting against racial discrimination,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP. “The nation is once again at an inflection point. We stood, and continue to stand united in our loud, bold call for equity, justice, and equal opportunity for all.” In addition to the riveting remarks
from politicians and activists, viewers were entertained and inspired by an appearance by Sheryl Underwood, a video of I Can’t Breathe by H.E.R., and performances from Bebe Winans, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Lisa Ramey, Burna Boy and many others. The evening was hosted by April Ryan, White House Correspondent for the Urban Radio Network, and was simulcast on multiple digital and streaming platforms including Bounce TV, TVOne, ABC, Roku, and Hulu. Highlights from the 2020 Virtual March on Washington: “We are equal, we deserve equal protection under the law and we will declare at the ballot box that Black Lives Matter.” Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO “Thanks to the activism of countless

W
HEN 2020 BEGAN, few could
have imagined what this year would entail. From COVID-19 to racial injustice and civil uprisings to protecting our elections’ integrity, if there ever was a time that underscored the importance of collective action, and the significance of activism, it is now. As a community, we’ve had to forge together, uplift our shared goals of dismantling systemic racism, achieve racial equity, and create a pathway forward in the wake of lacking leadership. At the NAACP, our history and legacy dictate that we’ve overcome moments like this repeatedly. Because of supporters, activists, and partners that undergird the work we do day-in and day-out, we’re able to keep the community informed, uplifted, and marching toward the long arc of justice. While we’ve had to adjust how we organize, mobilize and prioritize our fight for justice, we haven’t lost sight of the real power that lives within these movements—the people. The programs and initiatives we’ve executed this year have made an impact because of your support.
These include: Developing thousands of black youth through high academic and cultural achievement programs like ACT-SO Advocating for smarter, results-based criminal justice policies to keep our communities safe Supporting our efforts in training community leadership in addressing the human and civil rights issue of climate change, which has had a disproportionate impact on communities of color and low-income communities in the United States and around the world Supporting and raising awareness for political, educational, social and economic equality for communities of color in the electoral and legislative process In these challenging times, social justice and human rights advocacy require robust engagement in fighting systemic racism and oppression against Black and Brown communities. In our pursuit of justice for Black people, eliminating discrimination is critical to creating a better world. The generous contributions we’ve

received from businesses and countless others fuel the fight against all forms of bigotry, racism, violence, and subjugation is a step in the right direction. The work to upend the dark underbelly of discrimination within this country and around the world demands engagement from all people, sectors, and industries. This moment goes beyond financial responsibility and impresses all of us to ensure the Black community’s political and social prosperity. As our community simultaneously
battles two pandemics – the coronavirus outbreak and the ongoing surge of Jim Crow era racism – we bear witness to a new civil rights movement. And as we lead this new movement – one that centers the Black community and the Black agenda – we’re counting on you to help us build the nation we deserve. The NAACP has and will continue to invest contributions into our community through economic empowerment programs, youth development, voting rights protections, and social justice reform.
NYC MAYOR Announces New Commitments To BLACK ENTREPRENEURSHIP participants. “The Brooklyn Navy Yard continues to invest in initiatives that address the need for racial equity including expanded access and resources for underserved communities,” said David Ehrenberg, President & CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation. “The BE NYC accelerator will directly support Black entrepreneurs as the Yard continues to do its part to rebuild and reshape the City's economy — one that values and celebrates the contributions of women and our Black and Brown neighbors. We thank the de Blasio administration for
including us as we re-envision the future of the business community in New York City.” “As Black entrepreneurs, we know firsthand the sacrifice and determination needed to start a business or work in a corporate office and understand the challenges our community faces as they embark on that journey,” said the BE NYC Cabinet. “The BE NYC initiative not only highlights the barriers in a milestone report, but also actively works to dismantle them through innovative, collaborative solutions. We know that eradicating a system built on hate can only be done through partnership and we are
delighted with this incredible opportunity to help shape the future of Black business and the future of NYC.” “Addressing the wealth gap cannot be accomplished without addressing the longstanding inequities in Black communities, particularly the lack of access to financial services that have barred Black entrepreneurs from competing on a level playing field. I applaud the Mayor and SBS for utilizing public-private partnerships to drive BE NYC’s mission in fostering a black business community that has more access to the resources required to thrive,”
said Congressman Gregory W. Meeks. “The COVID-19 public health emergency has exacerbated existing racial economic disparities in our city and throughout the country,” said Senator Leroy Comrie. “Black entrepreneurs in SD14 and throughout the city want to be heard and they want access to the capital and resources that historically have not been afforded to them. I commend the Mayor and Commissioner for their commitment to this initiative and the broader issue of reducing the Black wealth gap.”

TMobile Launches PROJECT 10 MILLION Aimed With the need for equitable access to the internet more crucial than ever, T-Mobile has zeroed in on a bold goal: helping every single unconnected student in the U.S. get access to the internet connectivity they need to learn. In a video today, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert announced that the Un-carrier’s $10.7 billion Project 10Million commitment is taking a big step toward accomplishing this vision. The program is now live and available to school districts.

with plans that offer more data. As the supercharged Un-carrier, we now have the resources and network capacity to deliver reliable connectivity to students across the U.S. — and to tackle the critical homework gap and the schoolwork gap head-on!”
But T-Mobile didn’t stop there. In response to the unique learning challenges students are experiencing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Un-carrier is expanding Project 10Million by giving school districts additional plan options with more data to best meet their students’ current needs. T-Mobile previously committed to kick off Project 10Million once its merger with Sprint was complete, and now, as the supercharged Un-carrier, it is following through on that promise and putting its combined resources and network capacity to work. Through Project 10Million, T-Mobile is addressing the persistent homework gap experienced by more than 9 million children across the country who are unable to get online to complete at-home assignments. Project 10Million offers free wireless hotspots, up to 100GB per year of free high-speed data, and access to at-cost tablets and laptops, or the equivalent value of approximately $500 annually per student household. Additionally, as COVID-19 forces up to 50 million students out of the physical classroom and into part- or full-time remote learning, the need for connectivity and greater bandwidth has dramatically increased. What was a homework gap has turned into an even more massive schoolwork gap, when students without internet access are completely left
L E T ' S TA L K INNOVATION
Following the success of its 1st annual innovation conference held in Boca Raton, FL, Let’s Talk Innovation is proud to announce that Beatrice Dixon, CEO of The Honey Pot Company, will headline its 2020 Innovation conference on September 30th. Dixon, the founder of the wildly popular plant-based feminine care line The Honey Pot Company, is 1 of less than 1% of women of color who have raised $1 million in venture capital. She found her story making headlines after appearing in a Target commercial where she spoke about her product and how she hoped to inspire little girls of color to create their own businesses. When the commercial aired Dixon began receiving online harassment and a flood of negative reviews on her Trustpilot page due to her comments which in turn mobilized an army of supporters to back the brand and flood the page with positive reviews causing the brand to go viral. Let’s Talk attendees can expect to hear Dixon speak about the road to raising venture capital, creating a sustainable brand, scaling your business and more.
Dixon joins several other powerhouse speakers at Let’s Talk including CEO of Code Newbie, Saron Yitbarek; CEO of Grovest, Jeff Miller; CEO of Quartz Water Source, Jonathan Quarles; CEO of USDV Capital, Todd Billings; Media Strategist, Serena Spates; and VP of Gelt Financial Noah

100GB per month option or a fully unlimited plan. The best part is that every district gets free wireless hotspots and access to at-cost laptops and tablets, and they have the flexibility to pick the solution that works best for their district. And it’s all still free to students. Interested school districts can sign up today at www.t-mobile.com/p10m. “Education is the great leveler, but without internet access, kids will be left behind. T-Mobile has a big goal – to deliver connectivity to every child who needs it across the U.S. Starting now with our historic Project 10Million commitment, we’re going to help open A LOT of doors to opportunity that might have previously been closed,” said T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert. “This issue is even more critical as the COVID-19 pandemic has completely shifted learning for many from the classroom to online. Big issues need big solutions, and that’s exactly why we’re not just launching but significantly enhancing Project 10Million and giving flexibility to educators so they can best address the unique needs of their students
As classroom learning continues to shift to online learning, the need for internet connectivity is growing. It’s a problem T-Mobile has been working on closely with schools, state governments and technology partners since the pandemic started. The expanded reach and capacity of T-Mobile’s network plays a crucial role in the Un-carrier’s ability to make reliable connectivity truly accessible to students across the U.S. This includes those in urban centers as well as under-served areas like rural America, where 1.7 million households do not have high-speed home internet service. Future Project 10Million recipients will also benefit from T-Mobile’s expanded 5G over time with faster speeds and even broader coverage. Project 10Million builds on T-Mobile’s — and Sprint’s — long-standing focus on education and connecting students. Prior to merging in April 2020 and before the COVID-19 pandemic, T-Mobile and Sprint had already connected nearly half a million students, and as COVID-19 started to impact
the

schools, the combined company stepped up its efforts. Since March 2020, T-Mobile has connected over 1.6 million students in more than 3,100 school districts across the country. This includes the company’s part in New York City’s plan to connect more than 350,000 students with iPads and data when classes resume virtually. And the Un-carrier has partnered with the California Department of Education and Apple to connect up to another 1 million students as schools across the state prepare to start the next school year virtually. “Since the start of the pandemic, T-Mobile and Sprint have worked hand-in-hand with school districts, state governments and technology partners to bring connectivity solutions to those who need it most, connecting more than 1.6 million students in less than six months,” said Mike Katz, executive vice president of T-Mobile for Business. “During the pandemic, we’ve had countless conversations with school districts and educators. We’ve consistently heard that they need more options that fit the unique needs of their students. We have expanded Project 10Million to tap into T-Mobile’s network resources and capacity, and take our support of educators and students to a whole new level. We’re going to make a HUGE difference for millions of students!” Project 10Million is the third and final component of the Un-carrier 1.0 5G for Good commitments that the company announced before its merger with Sprint was approved. Since the completion of the merger, the company has now launched all three commitments, which also include Connecting Heroes and T-Mobile Connect. For more information about Project 10Million, or to sign up a school district for the program, go to t-mobile.com/p10m.

HE ALTH Study shows decline in awareness, treatment and control of HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE After nearly 15 years on an upward trend, awareness among Americans about high blood pressure and how to control and treat it is now on the decline, according to a new study. Even with the help of blood pressure medications, some groups, including older adults, are less likely than they were in earlier years to adequately control their blood pressure, the research found. The study, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, appeared online on Sept. 9 in JAMA. The authors say the trend could make long-standing efforts to fight heart disease and stroke—leading causes of death in the United States— even more challenging. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a major risk factor for heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 108 million Americans have hypertension, with a blood pressure reading of 130/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or higher or are taking medication for their blood pressure, but only 27 million are considered to have their blood pressure under control, despite it being a condition that can be managed. “Reversing this decline is important because we don’t want to lose public health achievements built over prior decades,” said Lawrence Fine, M.D., chief of the Clinical Applications and Prevention Branch at NHLBI and a study co-author. “It is a challenge for the scientific community to investigate the causes of this unexpected downward trend, but developing more effective strategies to reverse and substantially improve blood pressure control is critical for the health of many Americans.” The study included 18,262 U.S. adults
age 18 and older, with high blood pressure. The definition of hypertension at the time of the study was defined by a blood pressure reading of 140/90 mm Hg or higher or by treating the condition with blood pressure medications. Participants with a blood pressure reading of less than 140/90 mm Hg were categorized as having controlled blood pressure. With data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) taken between 1999 and 2018, the study authors looked at 20-year trends in high blood pressure awareness and treatment and blood pressure control. The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics conducts NHANES. At the beginning of the survey, participants had their blood pressure measured three times, then averaged. Participants answered yes or no when asked if their doctors told them they had high blood pressure and if they currently took prescribed medication for high blood pressure. The authors found that in 1999-2000, just 70% of participants showed an awareness of their condition. That number increased steadily to 85% in 2013-2014, but declined to 77% in 2017-2018. Of those “aware” adults, the number who also were taking blood pressure medications remained relatively consistent—85% in 19992000, 89% in 2013-2014, and 88% in 2017-2018. “The reversal in hypertension awareness is a real set back in the fight to reduce heart disease and stroke,” said Paul Muntner, Ph.D., the lead study author who also is professor and Associate Dean for Research in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “While lifestyle factors are big contributors to hypertension, awareness
and appropriate treatment are key to lowering blood pressure and keeping it in a healthy range to greatly reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke.” Of all adults with high blood pressure, the number who managed to control their condition increased from 32% in 1999-2000 to 54% in 2013-2014, but then declined to 44% in 2017-2018. Of those adults with controlled blood pressure, the number taking blood pressure medication increased from 53% in 1999-2000 to 72% in 20132014, then declined to 65% in 20172018. These observations, Muntner said, underscore the importance of continuity of care, including having a usual source of care and regularly scheduled healthcare visits that could increase high blood pressure awareness and treatment and blood pressure control among adults. Between 2015 to 2018, adults age 60 and older, as well as Black Americans as a group, were less likely than adults ages 18 to 44 and whites as a group to have controlled blood pressure. But participants with Medicaid as their health insurance were more likely to have their blood pressure under control than those without health insurance. There are several effective approaches to combat high blood pressure.
“Educating patients and providers on blood pressure goals, adding effective blood pressure medications when lifestyle changes aren’t enough, and reducing barriers to achieve high medication adherence in a variety of clinical practice settings are just a few strategies that may facilitate increases in blood pressure control rates and reduce health disparities we identified in the current study," added Muntner. About the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI): NHLBI is the global leader in conducting and supporting research in heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders that advances scientific knowledge, improves public health, and saves lives. with 15.3% of American Indian women being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Also by 2050, 1 in 3 people will have type 2 if the current trends continue. “Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is triggered by a combination of unchangeable factors, such as family history and race, and controllable factors, such as obesity and inactivity," according to the Mayo Clinic. "It’s also the seventh leading cause of

Diabetes when uncontrolled can be problematic. If blood sugar levels are not normalized in a diabetic, the body may have trouble fending off infections due to decreased functioning of the mmune system. This can affect the feet in particular due to peripheral artery disease (lack of circulation) and peripheral neuropathy (loss of feeling). As a result of diabetes, the feet may become susceptible to a slew of problems, such as ulcers and wounds that do not heal properly, fungal infections, ingrown or brittle toenails, corns, calluses, hammertoes, athlete’s foot, and cracked or dry skin. Gangrene, or dead tissue, can develop, causing bacterial infections that may result in amputation of the affected areas. Even everyday activities such as walking can cause issues in the feet of a diabetic, as the bones, joints, and skin are affected by the condition.

For over three decades, the NAACP headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, served as the resting place for Dorothy Parker. Forever etched into the NAACP’s history and legacy, the American poet, writer, critic and satirist was a fierce supporter of civil rights and social justice during a critical era in our nation’s history. At a time when the country was in the midst of a social movement for civil rights and equal protection, Parker gave to a cause she believed in by bequeathing her estate to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and providing that upon his death, the estate would pass to the NAACP. The NAACP continues to benefit from her gift by licensing the use of her works. Born in Long Beach, New Jersey, Parker

rose to prominence for her literary works published in such magazines as The New Yorker and as a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of New York City writers and critics. In 1932, Parker found success in Hollywood as a screenwriter. Among her accolades, she received two Academy Award nominations and worked on more than 15 films. Throughout her life, Parker grew to be a vocal advocate of civil liberties and civil rights. In 1988, under the leadership of then-NAACP President Benjamin Hooks, Parker’s remains were interred at the NAACP national headquarters in Baltimore and remained there for 32
years. Preserving the legacy of Dorothy Parker has been an essential part of the NAACP’s history. At the request of her family, which coincided with the NAACP’s planned moved to Washington, Mrs. Parker’s remains were re-interred in a family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York on Aug. 22, 2020. Among the speakers at the ceremony was Hazel N. Dukes, an NAACP national board member and current president of the NAACP New York State Conference.
Dorothy Parker will always be part of the NAACP story as the NAACP was part of hers. Her life and legacy will continue to be remembered throughout NAACP history.
