The Black Mothers Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA) is proud to announce it has received a $37,000 grant from the DMC Foundation. BMBFA is happy to make this announcement during World Doula Week, celebrated March 22-28th. The grant will support BMBFA’s communitybased doula program by supporting personnel and increasing access. BMBFA’s community-based doula program, which began in 2013, is designed to address maternal and child health inequities for Black mothers and babies in the Detroit metropolitan area. The Black community has long suffered from disproportionate levels of infant mortality, maternal morbidity, and pregnancy-related maternal deaths. By connecting expectant Black mothers to a doula at no cost, BMBFA ensures the success of both the mother and the child at every step before the birth and during the early post-partum period. This new source of funding will allow BMBFA to expand the community-based doula program to new mothers in an expanded geographic area, increase the hours of support allotted to mothers, and strengthen the telehealth network currently in place. The implementation of these new changes will occur this

through systemic issues that are prevalent but too often ignored.” “World Doula Week is a reminder to us all about the importance of doula care,” states Robena Hill, communitybased doula for BMBFA. “Communitybased doulas are trained community birth workers who provide culturally appropriate and kindred-spirited non-clinical emotional, physical and informational support before, during and after birth. I am particularly excited about the care that we provide, prenatally when mothers need it the most.”
year. “In the current pandemic, where stress continues to take a toll on pregnant mothers, there is an absolute greater need for support. With DMC Foundation’s generous grant, we will be able to increase access to our community-based doula program to more expectant mothers in Detroit and bordering communities,” said Kiddada Green, Executive Director of BMBFA. “Black mothers will be able to look to their doula for relief as they persevere
The DMC Foundation’s extensive grant selection process aims to provide funding to organizations that improve health in Detroit’s underserved communities. “BMBFA is thankful for the support provided by the DMC Foundation and will utilize it to effectively carry out our mission statement,” says Green. The BMBFA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community-based organization and the leader of many national programs aligned with the organization’s mission to reduce racial inequities in breastfeeding support for Black families. BMBFA’s signature success is the
Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Club (BMBFC). BMBFC has run without interruption for over ten years and has been replicated throughout the nation. BMBFA also boasts a school for community-based doula training, nationally accredited by HealthConnect One and approved by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Amongst other distinguished work, BMBFA served as a contributing expert for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention by providing recommendations for the U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding. Furthermore, BMBFA is the anchor organization for the Black Breastfeeding Caucus, co-creator of Black Breastfeeding Week and the Black Infant Remembrance Memorial. Founded in 2013, the DMC Foundation supports organizations that seek to improve the health of people living in the Detroit area. Since its inception, the Foundation has allocated millions of dollars to deserving organizations. From increased funding in research to direct support, Detroit residents and organizations have benefited enormously.

NEWS The New York Task Force for Vaccine Equity and Education launched “Roll Up Your Sleeves New York, The Covid-19 Vaccine Toolkit for Black Communities,” a toolkit that equips Black communities with outreach and educational materials to combat the COVID-19 virus. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on communities of color. Nationwide, Black people are dying at a rate 2.5-3 times higher than other groups. Because COVID-19 has most severely impacted Black and brown communities throughout New York City and across the nation, it is in these communities where information and outreach must be concentrated and shared with urgency. Information sharing can stamp out misinformation and fear that often pervades overlooked and underserved communities, hindering access to adequate health care. “Overcoming #COVID19 vaccine skepticism doesn’t happen overnight. 'The Roll Up Your Sleeves Toolkit' is packed with the resources for community leaders, clergy and anyone civically engaged to dispel rumors and garner vaccine trust in Black and brown communities. We are working to address years of distrust and we can need all hands on deck to get our community to herd immunity.” said Marc Morial, President and CEO of National Urban League and Co-chair of the New
about the vaccine, gain community trust and help save lives.” said Senator Nina Turner, founder of Amare Public Affairs and Co-chair of the New York COVID Vaccine Task Force for Vaccine Equity and Education. “It is not a new phenomenon that systemic and overt racism practiced in healthcare, government, and all aspects of civic life have made Black and brown communities most susceptible to COVID-19, and now skeptical of the vaccine. But now, as the vaccine is rolled out, it is up to us to rewrite our own history. We need to do the work, and that starts with information sharing,” said Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO and Executive Director of FPWA.
Image courtesy of New York Task Force for Vaccine Equity and Education York COVID Vaccine Task Force for Vaccine Equity and Education. “We started this task force in New York to ensure the vaccine is readily accessible to Black New Yorkers and address concerns in Black communities about the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine. Recently, I took group of clergy leaders to get vaccinated and dispel fears in my community. Now with the Roll Up Your Sleeves Toolkit, we can distribute accurate and accessible information to help demystify the COVID-19 vaccine.” said Rev Al Sharpton, President of
National Action Network and Co-chair of the New York COVID Vaccine Task Force for Vaccine Equity and Education. “The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the realities of healthcare deserts in communities of color and the dangers of misinformation. Black and brown communities suffered tremendously due to a lack of medical access, lack of accurate information and greater exposure to the virus because of their occupation or crowded living conditions. With the Roll Up Your Sleeves toolkit, we hope to dispel some of the myths
The toolkit is available for download at rollupyoursleevesny.org. The website also currently hosts multi-lingual social media messaging created by New York City. Throughout the month of March, additional educational resources will be added. The task force led by Morial, Sharpton, and Turner partnered with FPWA to develop the toolkit based on the organization’s experience organizing Black communities during the 2020 Census. This fact-based outreach and education program will be followed by an effort to identify, with specificity, safe and easy to reach locations for Black New Yorkers to receive the vaccine.
NYS & CORNELL UNIV CREATE TRAINING PROGRAM fOR CITIZEN HEALTH LEADERSHIP Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the launch of a free, online Citizen Public Health Training Course for New Yorkers to learn about preparedness for and prevention of public health emergencies from top public health experts. This innovative course, delivered by the New York State Department of Health in partnership with Cornell University and supported by the State University of New York, will prepare and equip New Yorkers to become NYS Citizen Public Health Leaders and build an informed network of community health leaders across the state. Participants will learn about COVID-19, public health emergency preparedness and response, and other public health issues, while gaining insight into information and resources that will benefit their communities. More information on the Citizen Public Health Training Program, including how to register to become a NYS Citizen Public Health Leader is available. "When our state was ambushed by COVID-19, New Yorkers rose to the occasion, supported each other and worked together to stop the spread," Governor Cuomo said. "Following the facts and the science has played a critical role in keeping the infection and hospitalization rates down across the state. Moving forward, it is critical that we are equipped with the tools and knowledge we need to protect ourselves, our families and our communities not just against COVID, but also against other public health emergencies that may arise in the future. The innovative Citizen Public Health Training Program will empower New Yorkers to become Public Health Leaders in the fight to defeat COVID once and for all and help us build a more resilient New York for the future." reliable sources. This program was first announced as part of the Governor's 2021 State of the State proposal. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, New Yorkers were asked to do their part to fight a virus in ways they had never done before. Everyone was given a crash course in virology, learning to properly wash their hands, sanitize their homes and businesses, and safely care for their family and neighbors. Thousands of New Yorkers signed up and were trained to be contract tracers, helping to track and mitigate the spread of the virus. When other states needed help, these New Yorkers heeded the call and brought their new public health skills to the rest of the country. This new training will help New Yorkers gain the tools to protect themselves, their families and others against future health emergencies. Cornell University President, Martha Pollack, Ph.D. said, "Cornell University is proud to partner with New York State to deliver this public health training to educate individuals across the state to inform and support their families and their respective communities. We thank Governor Cuomo for his partnership in launching this training program, which we know will have a meaningful impact on the lives of New Yorkers across the state." SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras said, "At every turn of this COVID crisis, everyday New Yorkers have stepped up to play a pivotal role in slowing the spread of coronavirus and keeping their communities safe. And while there's light at the end of the tunnel, this pandemic is not over. Continued education, vigilance, and leadership will be crucial in the months to come. SUNY is proud to

Cornell University Provost, Michael Kotlikoff, V.M.D., Ph.D. said, "This program is a unique opportunity to make Cornell educators accessible to all New Yorkers, allowing them to learn about critical public health information that can help protect their families and their communities from COVID-19, promote and support their health and wellbeing, and be better prepared for future public health emergencies. We are proud to partner with Governor Cuomo and New York State to make this important program a reality and we look forward to seeing its success." SUNY Provost-in-Charge F. Shadi Shahedipour-Sandvik said, "The Citizen Public Health Training Program will empower New Yorkers to do what we do best—rise up to the occasion to help protect one another. And to that end, we are proud to lend the expertise of our outstanding public health professionals within SUNY's research and faculty ranks, and to partner with Cornell University on this critical educational opportunity." Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, Lorin D. Warnick, V.M.D., Ph.D., said, "Throughout this entire pandemic we have relied on the trusted voices of scientists and public health experts to learn about and beat back the virus. The Citizen Public Health Training Program will be available to all New Yorkers, allowing them to learn from Cornell's top educators and become public health leaders for their own communities and beyond. This innovative new program would not be possible without our partnership with New York State, and I thank Governor Cuomo for empowering New Yorkers to help defeat COVID once and for all."

Based on the popular book Ladies Night, created by Christian Keyes, whom also serves as a writer for the series, the one-hour drama centers around the life of “Marilyn ‘Madam’ DeVille,” played by Eva Marcille. Madam is a fierce businesswoman who is at the top of her game in the nightclub industry and surrounded by a band of trusted employees who are down to make sure that she is successful. But Madam, a selfproclaimed boss, soon discovers that more money and more power means more problems. Will Madam retain reign as she navigates this dangerous and sexy society? Will the sensuous world of exotic dancing cost Madam her queendom and potentially her life? Find out when all 10 episodes of “All The Queen’s Men” drop this Summer exclusively on BET+. Created by Keyes, “All The Queen’s Men” is one of the first shows from Tyler Perry Studios’ scripted development arm, Pitch Black Development LLC, headed by the studio’s President of Production & Development, Michelle Sneed. BL AC K GIRL SU N SCR E E N Secured $ 1 Mil l ion Last May Black Girl Sunscreen (BGS) secured a $1 million dollar investment from a private female funding source. Despite double minority owned businesses typically having the hardest time raising capital, BGS achieved this milestone with one single anchor product. After months of vetting potential partners, owner Shontay Lundy made it official with an investor who embodies many of her own traits, namely integrity and business savvy. When the pandemic hit, the five person BGS staff implemented an “all hands on deck” mentality to ensure the company thrived, said Owner, Shontay Lundy. Lundy who holds an MBA, launched the brand in 2016 and has amassed much success with the SPF 30 sunscreen. She refused to let the pandemic slow down her progress, stating that, "I told my team we need to change the narrative and be very nimble to survive this.” The team immediately enhanced their social
media strategy, started working longer hours and increased their marketing efforts. This BGS mentality was extremely attractive to the final investment candidates and helped them secure the deal. Since the onset of COVD-19, the brand has seen a tremendous uptick in e-commerce orders and will be launching a new product later this year. Several months later and still striving, the brand allocated funds to launch a billboard and marketing campaign in some of the nation’s biggest cities including Miami, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Not only does their current marketing efforts show the growth of the brand but also their dedication to normalize the use of sunscreen in black and multicultural communities. Today, BGS is the only indie black owned brand carried full time in Target’s sun care section. This came after a successful sales and marketing campaign, which focused on the importance of all complexions needing sunscreen. Now over 1100 Target stores

across the country sell the BGS SPF 30 and BGS Kids SPF 50 and the nearly released Make it Matte. BGS is also sold in Ulta stores across the country. Our story begins with the need for melanin women to have a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to them. 2016 was the year Black Girl Sun Screen was created in the ever-popular city of Miami, Florida. Beach days are always necessary but blotchy makeup and white residue are two things we were frustrated with when enjoying a sunny day. In fact, all outside activities began to come to a halt since we knew how much sun-rays would damage the skin. Black Girl Sunscreen uses NO parabens, or other harmful chemicals while infusing the finest ingredients to shield and moisturize your melanated skin without the dreaded white residue common with most sunscreen.

WOMEN THE WOM AN TELLS When it comes to stories of romantic relationship issues captured on paper and/or digital, this new book, “ T H E W O M A N T E L L S , ” takes the whole topic to levels that go way beyond the surface. Penned by Chicago native Karla Davis-Luster, “The Woman Tells” – her debut novel – explores the world of love between people of color, which to the author, is a love that is like none other. “Black love is the most powerful and the strongest love two people could ever have – not taking anything away from other races,” says DavisLuster. “Black love is based on several principles – respect, honor, loyalty, support and code. When you
find those factors in a soulmate, the love becomes deeper. It’s one of the most powerful things one can have once it enters their lives.” Yet when this level of love involves outside forces, that’s where “The Woman Tells” goes into an area which may seem, let’s say, complicated but with its own codes. “What I do within the book is not only explain what each character is doing but why,” explains DavisLuster. “I want the reader to fully understand the mode of operation the couple as well as the other man and the other woman are coming from and what each wants within their own world when it comes to relationships.”

END NO TE S NEW MUSIC! “Far From Average.” This isn’t merely the title of the latest track from Koz.Me. It’s who he is. Koz.Me is far from average. He’s got international swag! The music Koz.Me makes is too big for one genre. It’s hip hop, R&B, pop, kizomba, Afrobeat, dancehall, reggaeton, trapton, club. It’s all of the above. For about three years, Koz.Me was cooking in his lab to develop his own unique, international sound. He experimented with fusing different genres and like always, hard work paid off. A singer, songwriter, beatmaker, he also mixes, audio engineers, and produces his own music as well as that of other artists from all around New York. “Far From Average” was written, co-produced, and mixed by the artist himself. In addition to music, Koz.Me choreographs his own videos, including the just-released “Far From Average.” In other words, Koz. Me is an all-round artist and total entertainer. “Far From Average” may show off Koz.Me’s big-city smarts, but he got his swag from the tiny island of São Nicolau in Cape Verde. Growing up, music always guided his spirit. Even though as a young boy he was involved in music in his church, it was in his early teens that he started on his musical path. He formed a hip-hop crew that performed in local community festivals. Koz.Me soon discovered he had bigger and broader dreams. He didn’t want to be defined just by hip hop even though hip hop is part of him. This revelation led him to his next move. He became a drive-time DJ at Radio Cidade, one of the country’s major radio stations, with the goal of to connect with national and international music personalities. During this period he was able to be surrounded by music, study music styles, and define his target audience. Recording and singing under the name ELL Cosme, he released his first professional single, “Koza Sab” in 2014. It was an instant hit in Cape Verde and generated international media attention and radio plays in Portugal, The Netherlands, France, other parts of Africa, as well as in NYC, Boston, and parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island. The song stayed at No. 1 on radio and TV for months, driven by public demand.

From Koz.Me!
Other hit singles followed, among them “Amor Na Club” and “I Love You More,” which he performed across his country in major music festivals in front of thousands. Koz.Me’s journey then led him to New York City where he put 110% in preparing for musical stardom. Koz.Me immersed himself in the art and business of entertainment. He studied hip-hop dance at the preeminent Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He became a certified audio engineer through his studies at the renowned SAE Institute New York. In 2019, he dropped “Vibes,” his first music project in the U.S., which featured tracks that he had stored in the vaults. While the singles “Be There” and “Na Pared” were well received, Koz.Me still yearned to evolve his sound even more. Now he’s ready to unveil his evolution on an international scale. “I want to bring my music to the world. People everywhere can relate to my music, can have fun with my music, dream with it, reminisce with it, fly with it,” says Koz.Me. “I want to give hope to kids all around the world that dreams do come true.” “Far From Average” is now on all platforms.
