STARTING AND GROWING A SMALL BUSINESS IN NEW YORK Ever dreamed of owning your own business? If so, you’re not alone. You’re among more than 60% of Americans with the same aspiration. The good news is, there are resources to support you in making that dream your reality. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate toll on Black-owned businesses, but it’s also driven many companies to launch much-needed racial equity initiatives to support long-term recovery and economic growth in historically underserved communities. Our team at JPMorgan Chase, for example, has set aside 15,000 loans and $2 billion in capital for Black and Latino businesses that have been left behind for too long. Small businesses have the power to boost local economies, job creation and community development. But critical to their success is equipping small business owners with the capital, knowledge and tools necessary to start and develop a company. Jumoke (Joy) Fagbayi-Butts, based in New York, talks about her experience supporting businesses owners and offers advice, lessons learned, and more about working with Black-owned businesses. What’s the most important thing a first-time entrepreneur should know when starting a business? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: A foundational understanding of what you’ll need for a successful business is a good place to start. In my experience, I’ve found there are a few driving factors that can help you succeed: 1. A reliable network: Having a mentor – or access to someone who’s done this before has been valuable for many of my clients. Whether they’re asking questions, discussing ideas, or just offering general support, there are incredible champions right here in the local community. You can supplement a local strong support network with Chase workshops, panel discussions and summits, as well as our Chase for Business mailing list and social channels where you’ll find regular updates on networking and learning opportunities that are available. The Chase for Business offerings are great for both growing your knowledge of managing a business, as well as growing your network beyond your community. 2. A relationship with your banker: Banking is about relationships, so I encourage and welcome you to stop by a Chase branch or set up a digital appointment to begin cultivating one. We’re actively asking local Black entrepreneurs about their experiences and pain points, including questions like “What are your greatest barriers to financial success?” and “How can we help you overcome them?” The more we know about where you are struggling, the more we can help you find a solution. 3. Knowledge of operational tools: From digital payment systems to automated billing, there are countless tech-based software and service offerings available to simplify many aspects of managing a business. Digital media and marketing tools have also been game-changers for many of our clients as they look to reach and engage more customers. 4. Access to funding and loans: Starting a business costs money! Initial expenses can include everything from licenses to new equipment. Luckily, there are alternatives to covering these costs entirely on your own, like loans, grants, lines of credit and other capital set aside specifically for Black entrepreneurs. Funding is so important, to your previous point. How do most business owners go about securing capital and what options are available to Black business owners, specifically here in New York? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: In addition to the traditional options and types of capital I mentioned before, we’ve reserved low-cost loans specifically

2 | NewYorkTrendnyc

for Black-owned businesses. Many small business owners right here in New York are able to secure loans fairly quickly by working with the team here at Chase. When you come in, just ask us about the process for securing the funding you need and we’ll walk you through all of your options – ranging from loans to lines of credit – including your eligibility and the pros and cons of each. We strive to present you with every option – even the ones you may have not originally thought were right for you – to give you all the information you need to make the right decision for yourself and your business. You mentioned the importance of a strong network and supportive resources. Given disparities in business ownership among Black communities, what support do you offer that’s specifically tailored to address the unique needs of this community? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The Advancing Black Entrepreneurs platform was built in collaboration with Black Enterprise, National Urban League and other organizations that understand firsthand the challenges Black communities have faced when starting a business. Many of my clients have said that the site’s free educational courses, on-demand resources and networking events have been extremely helpful in building the foundation they needed to successfully navigate their small business’s journey. You don’t even need to be a Chase customer to access these free resources. You brought up the many resources available through Advancing Black Entrepreneurs. Of the educational courses, resources and networking events, what are some of your clients’ recent favorites? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The last few years have been difficult – especially for Black-owned business, so many have appreciated the content we’ve published on surviving the pandemic. Chase.com recently featured Shark Tank’s Daymond Johnson who discussed how Black business owners can navigate pandemic-driven problems. That webcast, along with the educational course on the same topic, offer some great advice – from the importance of bookkeeping to pivoting your business model and developing contingency plans. If you find yourself inspired to take the leap and start a business of your own, or grow your existing venture, visit a branch to find out more about the tools, resources and capital available to you. Not only is this a win for soon-tobe Justice Jackson and her family, but it is a win for Black women, the Black community, this country, and our ancestors. We thank the Senate for putting partisanship aside to swiftly confirm Judge Jackson and restoring the American people’s faith in the Senate’s ability to run a fair, bipartisan confirmation process. “Judge Jackson has proven time and time again that she is immensely qualified to take on the role of Associate Justice. The issue brief outlines several areas that policy-makers must address, including the overlapping issues of social equity and community reinvestment, criminal justice, workforce development, entrepreneurship, public health, and product safety, to get this right. NMAAHC PRESENTS ‘OUR AMERICAN STORY’

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is proud to present the next page from Our American Story, an online series for Museum supporters. We offer these stories to honor and celebrate the African American experience, share an immensely rich history and culture, and inspire and sustain our community as we move toward the future together. The Second Great Awakening, an early 19th-century religious revival in the United States, marked an era of transformation for America and a new path forward for Jarena Lee. Born into a free Black family in Cape May, New Jersey, in 1783, Lee navigated the intense religiosity and social reformation of her time to emerge as the nation’s first African American woman preacher and the first woman to be recognized as an evangelist in the male-dominated African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Lee’s journey to Christianity began when she moved to Philadelphia as a young adult in 1807. Like many Americans of her time, Lee struggled with changing cultural beliefs on human nature, morality, and the path to salvation. In search of answers, she sought out a personal connection to the gospel and heard the teachings of Bishop Richard Allen, a renowned preacher in Philadelphia. Inspired by his powerful sermons, Lee decided to join the church and get baptized. But Lee’s journey of faith would be difficult. Lee struggled to find a place for herself and her passion for the gospel within the maledominated church—a battle that brought on depression and even thoughts of suicide.

She also wrestled with the inherent conflict between her spirituality and a desire for “the vanities of this life.” Despite these challenges, Lee remained determined to go beyond the church and share her faith in Christ with the world, a conviction that she carried back to New Jersey, where she moved with her new husband, Methodist Pastor Joseph Lee, in 1811. While in New Jersey, Lee was able to

she could—in open fields, town squares, and her home. One day, while attending a Sunday worship service at Bishop Allen’s church, Lee heard a guest preacher struggle with the delivery of his sermon. She sprang into action, picking up where he left off, and presented her own testimony. Bishop Allen was so impressed by Lee’s preaching and boldness that he publicly endorsed her. She was soon permitted to

serve in an African Methodist congregation and nurture her faith—but she still couldn’t practice what she believed was her true calling: preaching. Seven years into her marriage, Lee became a widow. The grief that followed her husband’s death only strengthened Lee’s conviction to “preach the word of God.” She returned to Philadelphia soon after, determined to advocate for women in the ministry. Bishop Allen, who by then had founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church, initially refused to grant Lee permission to preach because of the church’s ban on female ministers. But Lee, driven by the intensity of her faith, began delivering sermons wherever

preach, and later became the first ordained woman preacher in the AME Church. Lee’s evangelical career spanned multiple decades and intersected with her advocacy for equal rights and powerful leadership in the abolitionist movement. Lee also was the first African American woman to publish an autobiographical memoir, The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee, a Colored Lady, Giving an Account of Her Call to Preach the Gospel, which was first released in 1836. “For as unseemly as it may appear now-adays for a woman to preach,” Lee wrote, “it should be remembered that nothing is impossible with God. And why should it be

thought impossible . . . or improper for a woman to preach?” The relentless persistence of Jarena Lee, who died in 1864, helped break down barriers and pave the way for African American women to enter the ministry. Her achievements were especially remarkable, given that they occurred during a time when women’s contributions were often overlooked, ignored, or forgotten. Like so many pioneers of her time, Lee’s story is one of resiliency, optimism, and spirituality—values that are deeply rooted throughout African American history and culture. Although Jarena Lee’s history is not widely known, her legacy as the first African American woman preacher represents an important example of women defying social barriers, transcending traditional gender roles, and touching the hearts, minds, and souls of many. If you’d like to learn more about Jarena Lee’s incredible journey—or if you are interested in exploring other powerful but lesser-known stories in African American history—please visit our online Searchable Museum today. This ground-breaking—and 2022 CIO Awardwinning—initiative by the Museum brings innovative, immersive digital experiences and evocative content directly into the homes of supporters like you. The Museum’s exhibitions and digital collections help connect individuals with a deeper understanding of the African American story by sharing the lives of pioneers like Jarena Lee. Please help the Museum continue this critical work by joining the Museum or making a donation today.

SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS HELP OTHERS COMBAT LONELINESS

As recently seen on Yahoo! & FOX LA, Sparkze aims to help young people’s mental health and combat loneliness by helping guide people in showing their true selves through icebreakers and video features to build real genuine connections. With this immersive new experience, you can play games and talk to new people in your area who are all searching for something new. Sparkze uses a fun game show format, eases social interaction, produces authentic content at scale, and even gives people a shot at fame.

When developing the app, the team of influencers asked themselves, “why is society as connected as we are also the loneliest, and why are digital natives (adults 18-30) struggling more than any other generation?” They found that:  Over 70% of digital natives express feelings of loneliness  One in five GenZ is without a single friend  48% have tried dating apps, but only 8-10% are still using them Dating apps are local, but not social… and Social apps do social, but not local. So the team created Sparkze, where you can get to know the actual person before meeting them. The pandemic has changed how we will live and socialize. At the same time, according to studies, today’s youth are increasingly lonely. Now it’s time to leverage those interests with gameplay that helps people interact with and meet others. Founder & CEO Greg Nimer has 20+ years of leadership in consumer products, eCommerce, business development, design, and distribution. Photos provided by Sparkze 

Social media influencers Rhea Litré (“Drag’s Baddest Bitch”), Maya Kuriel (Musician), and TV host Murray Swanby have teamed with CEO Greg Nimer to collaborate and launch the new Dating/Social App Sparkze that hit the App Store this week. According to new research, millennials & Gen Z are the loneliest generations, so this influential team of social media movers & shakers created this groundbreaking relationship-making app where people meet virtually and get to know each other through games without the pressure of meeting IRL.

Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.

If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.

Early screening of what’s known as your cognitive health, allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. We offer people who are experiencing possible early cognitive decline, the opportunity to participate in ongoing research studies/clinical trials that are focused on the early stage of this disease. Our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease is one of 10 centers in New York State, funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

To learn about available Alzheimer’s resources, research studies and clinical trials, or to participate in a free cognitive screening, call (631) 954-2323 or visit ceadlongisland.org.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE Research has shown that over 80% of children (aged 12-15) may have been subjected to harmful experiences online, which has led to heightened searches for “cyber safety” (20.5K) and “cyber security” (451.9K), according to Google trend data. Child game platforms such as Roblox have amassed over 47 million daily active users globally and are moving towards metaverse technology. With increasing concern over child safety in the metaverse and social media usage, experts at OnBuy Smart Watches spoke exclusively to cyber security expert James Bore, who has been in the industry for more than 10 years and has provided professional advice for keeping children safe online.

judged or worried about being told off for anything that happens. It is far too often that when people do prey on children online, they use the idea that adults in the child’s life will be angry at them, and that things are their fault. The difference it can make when they can have clear, honest communications with parents or guardians is huge, and is arguably the biggest step towards online safety.

2. Explanation of safety and censorship tools. Allowing your child (particularly older children) to understand why certain rules are in place and what they do. Children are inventive, and most parental control tools can be worked around by any child with a sense of curiosity and a desire to push boundaries.

Other key questions and conversations for parents to ask and discuss include:  What social media applications do they use, if any? Do they have any games with social media functions or chat?  Make sure they understand privacy settings, and go through them with them.  Make sure they understand that people lie, and they should not meet anyone they only know online.  Do they understand about online harassment and bullying, how to recognize if they’re targeting someone, or being targeted, and what to do about it?  Do they play any games which allow ingame purchases, and do you have control over their ability to spend  OnBuy Smart Watches scraped online parenting forums to reveal 5 key ways parents can protect their children online easily: 1. Explicit websites Search engines for kids and filtering programs can be effective in allowing parents to control what sites children can see. Netmums recommends Net Nanny – which monitors online content, limits screen time and filters sites to protect your children. OnBuy Smart Watches discovered that parents also recommended the following search engines for kids – Aj Kids and Kids Search, whilst users on Mumsnet suggest censoring thread titles on the forum (keep Mumsnet forum names PG) so that children

are not exposed to explicit words if they happen to look over at the computer screen. 2. Inappropriate instructional websites Netmums refers to ‘inappropriate instructional websites’ as sites that promote step-by-step instructions for inappropriate topics such as concealing anorexia or taking drugs. These can be accessed through other genuinely useful instructional sites, and so run the risk of being taken seriously by children. OnBuy Smart Watches found advice on all of the reviewed parenting forums pointing towards blocking inappropriate websites, or downloading software that prevents popups and inappropriate instructional sites from popping up. 3. Chat room safety Mumsnet users suggest bans on ‘Whatsapp’ and social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter are all rated 13+) for younger children. However, parents are aware that there may be other chat room apps so suggest daily monitoring of your child’s phone. Regular checks can ensure that your children are staying safe on chat rooms and that nothing goes unmissed. Other users on the forum also suggest locking or removing the device overnight, so that your child gets adequate sleep and isn’t exposed to unsolicited and unmonitored messages when unaccompanied. 4. Cyberbullying According to the Anti-Bullying Alliance – one in five schoolchildren in the UK has been a victim of some form of online abuse.

Inez Cooper, founder of William Russell, gave some tips on staying safe abroad: “When picking a new country to relocate or travel to there are many important factors to consider, an important one being safety. Always make sure to get a good understanding of your destination before you go including any risks or cultural sensitivities to watch out for.” He adds, “Keep your accommodation secure, make sure all windows and doors are locked while you are out and don’t keep all your money or valuables on your person as pickpocketing is unfortunately very common in tourist destinations. Having a safety net of international health insurance should anything go wrong will bring peace of mind, enabling you to access private treatment if you’re injured or become ill.”

Westbury Arts is celebrating Women’s History Month with an exhibition of work expressing the theme Timeless—Tiempo Eterno, exploring Issues women face in society today, in the United States and Latin American countries, and a poetry reading and workshop with artist and author Rosalba Henao. The exhibition will be up for viewing Fridays: March 11, 18 and 25 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays March 12, 19 and 26 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Nancy Turetsky’s “The Distance She Traveled,” a painting incorporating family photographs, tells the story of her mother’s journey from her Orthodox Jewish home at age 18 to a secular life with her husband, Turetsky’s father. Writing about her painting “Cake,” artist Patty Eljaiek says, “The expectation of women to be subservient has not changed. Although these ideas seem quaint in 2022, we have not really come as far as we think we have.” Rosalba Henao’s “Original Power,” depicts in Eve in paradise and the serpent giving her power. Empowering pieces by several local and visiting artists will also be showcased. Henao, who is also a writer who migrated to the US from Colombia in 2010, will read

her poetry in English and Spanish at the opening on Friday, March 4 from 6:30 to 9 pm held at the Westbury Arts gallery.
