STARTING AND GROWING A SMALL BUSINESS IN NEW YORK Ever dreamed of owning your own business? If so, you’re not alone. You’re among more than 60% of Americans with the same aspiration. The good news is, there are resources to support you in making that dream your reality. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate toll on Black-owned businesses, but it’s also driven many companies to launch much-needed racial equity initiatives to support long-term recovery and economic growth in historically underserved communities. Our team at JPMorgan Chase, for example, has set aside 15,000 loans and $2 billion in capital for Black and Latino businesses that have been left behind for too long. Small businesses have the power to boost local economies, job creation and community development. But critical to their success is equipping small business owners with the capital, knowledge and tools necessary to start and develop a company. Jumoke (Joy) Fagbayi-Butts, based in New York, talks about her experience supporting businesses owners and offers advice, lessons learned, and more about working with Black-owned businesses. What’s the most important thing a first-time entrepreneur should know when starting a business? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: A foundational understanding of what you’ll need for a successful business is a good place to start. In my experience, I’ve found there are a few driving factors that can help you succeed: 1. A reliable network: Having a mentor – or access to someone who’s done this before has been valuable for many of my clients. Whether they’re asking questions, discussing ideas, or just offering general support, there are incredible champions right here in the local community. You can supplement a local strong support network with Chase workshops, panel discussions and summits, as well as our Chase for Business mailing list and social channels where you’ll find regular updates on networking and learning opportunities that are available. The Chase for Business offerings are great for both growing your knowledge of managing a business, as well as growing your network beyond your community. 2. A relationship with your banker: Banking is about relationships, so I encourage and welcome you to stop by a Chase branch or set up a digital appointment to begin cultivating one. We’re actively asking local Black entrepreneurs about their experiences and pain points, including questions like “What are your greatest barriers to financial success?” and “How can we help you overcome them?” The more we know about where you are struggling, the more we can help you find a solution. 3. Knowledge of operational tools: From digital payment systems to automated billing, there are countless tech-based software and service offerings available to simplify many aspects of managing a business. Digital media and marketing tools have also been game-changers for many of our clients as they look to reach and engage more customers. 4. Access to funding and loans: Starting a business costs money! Initial expenses can include everything from licenses to new equipment. Luckily, there are alternatives to covering these costs entirely on your own, like loans, grants, lines of credit and other capital set aside specifically for Black entrepreneurs. Funding is so important, to your previous point. How do most business owners go about securing capital and what options are available to Black business owners, specifically here in New York? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: In addition to the traditional options and types of capital I mentioned before, we’ve reserved low-cost loans specifically

for Black-owned businesses. Many small business owners right here in New York are able to secure loans fairly quickly by working with the team here at Chase. When you come in, just ask us about the process for securing the funding you need and we’ll walk you through all of your options – ranging from loans to lines of credit – including your eligibility and the pros and cons of each. We strive to present you with every option – even the ones you may have not originally thought were right for you – to give you all the information you need to make the right decision for yourself and your business. You mentioned the importance of a strong network and supportive resources. Given disparities in business ownership among Black communities, what support do you offer that’s specifically tailored to address the unique needs of this community? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The Advancing Black Entrepreneurs platform was built in collaboration with Black Enterprise, National Urban League and other organizations that understand firsthand the challenges Black communities have faced when starting a business. Many of my clients have said that the site’s free educational courses, on-demand resources and networking events have been extremely helpful in building the foundation they needed to successfully navigate their small business’s journey. You don’t even need to be a Chase customer to access these free resources. You brought up the many resources available through Advancing Black Entrepreneurs. Of the educational courses, resources and networking events, what are some of your clients’ recent favorites? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The last few years have been difficult – especially for Black-owned business, so many have appreciated the content we’ve published on surviving the pandemic. Chase.com recently featured Shark Tank’s Daymond Johnson who discussed how Black business owners can navigate pandemic-driven problems. That webcast, along with the educational course on the same topic, offer some great advice – from the importance of bookkeeping to pivoting your business model and developing contingency plans. Truth’s Table podcast, created by Black Women, for Black Women, has garnered more than 3 million downloads and has been ranked in Apple’s Top 200 Religion & Spirituality podcasts. This trio was also the recipient of the 2021 Best Black Religion and Spirituality Podcast Award by Black Podcasting Awards (BPA). Episodes on the show tackle politics, race, culture, and gender issues through a Christian lens. The women have been recognized by the New York Times, the Atlantic, Christianity Today, and several other publications. Now into their sixth season, Truth’s Table has transferred their podcasting experience into their first literary project. The book breaks down topics such as colorism, marriage, divorce, reparations; the perception placed on single black women, protests, and discipleship while offering a pathway for reflection and change. Named one of the smartest kids in the world, Joshua was far too academically advanced to attend third grade with his peers and was homeschooled instead. So, what does a super scholar study? Joshua excels at science, math, history, foreign languages and history. He dreams of being a neurosurgeon and is well on his way by practicing gall bladder removals and appendectomy procedures. “Since the age of four, I was on my dad’s laptop and it had a body simulator where I would pull out organs. I want to save the earth. I want to change the world and change people’s ideas to doing the right things about earth.” He also plans to be a neurosurgeon and is currently writing a children’s book about Egypt. But get this…he’s done all of this even with being diagnosed with autism. When he isn’t studying and achieving more than many adults, Joshua also

serves as the face of the National Autistic Society’s Black and Minority (BME) campaign. Diagnosed with high functioning autism, Joshua helps to spread the campaign’s mission of highlighting obstacles Blacks face when trying to obtain access to necessary autism support and services. According to a 2011 study, Autism and the African American Community, “evidence demonstrates that although rates of diagnosis for autism occur at the same rates in all racial groups, diagnosis in African American children occurs later than in White children. As a result, African American children may require longer and more intensive intervention.” In between studying to be the youngest neurosurgeon, Joshua enjoys fundraising for three Autism Charities, one in the U.K and two in Africa, and campaigns to save the environment. Between medical school and the years associated with that, Joshua should reach his goal of being named a Doctor within the next two years. Young Joshua is definitely living proof that no obstacle is too great to keep you from achieving greatness.

The Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grant program is now accepting applications for efforts that increase the pipeline of highly effective educators. However, parents are aware that there may be other chat room apps so suggest daily monitoring of your child’s phone. Regular checks can ensure that your children are staying safe on chat rooms and that nothing goes unmissed. Other users on the forum also suggest locking or removing the device overnight, so that your child gets adequate sleep and isn’t exposed to unsolicited and unmonitored messages when unaccompanied. 4. Cyberbullying According to the Anti-Bullying Alliance –

Phishing Mumsnet users advise to send any incidents of online phishing to: report@phishing.gov. uk as soon as it’s spotted. Other advice includes either ignoring phishing emails/ messages or changing your settings so that mail from that scam address goes straight to the deleted folder.  Methodology: 1. Ross also co-founded Forty Acres and A Mule Filmworks with college classmate Spike Lee where they produced several films including Malcolm X, Jungle Fever, She’s Gotta Have It and School Daze. Ross’ behind-thescenes work on the film Inside Man is matched by his service as a film lecturer, adjunct professor and guest speaker at prestigious schools as VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University), Old Dominion University, Clark Atlanta and Florida A&M University. Ross’ first production with Ours Studios is As If We Were Ghosts, a documentary that will debut June 13 and June 19 (Juneteenth), 2022, on every station in the Georgia Public Broadcasting System. The production, the first of five planned, highlights the harsh treatment of Black high school athletes during segregation and their unwavering spirit to overcome challenges.

These were the real ghosts.” Telling these stories is just one reason why Ross took a break in his busy schedule to spend a year as Filmmaker-in-Residence. “I am delighted and honored to not only work on As If We Were Ghosts for Ours Studios, but to have this filmmaker-in-residence opportunity,” says Ross. “Within the next year, we hope to produce four more episodes building from the original documentary,” he continued.

Also, Ross says that he is “just as excited as to spend the year on my passion — making great films and bringing more emerging filmmakers into the industry. During the yearlong residency, we will immerse students in theory, practical and financial elements of good filmmaking. Georgia has a thriving film industry and I’m honored to help get young people interested in film so they can carry on producing stories, such as As If We Were Ghosts that tell vital stories and help to fill in the blanks about the realities inflicted on Black people throughout our history,” says Ross. Ours Studios is a Black-owned and financed company that produces film and documentaries. as well as offers a wide range of production services and spaces. In addition, its state-of-the-art studios rentals are designed to make audio, video and livestreams for podcasts and vlogs and has two converted warehouses

dedicated for film, video, and photography productions. The studio’s first documentary is As If We Were Ghosts, about how the athletic and musical accomplishments of students in Black high schools in Georgia were ignored and erased from history. Four more productions of this theme are set to be produced. The show will air on all Georgia Public Broadcasting stations in June, including on June 19th for the celebration of Juneteenth. Ours Studios CEO is business tycoon Ron Bivins and its COO is Dr. Ann Wead Kimbrough, a former reporter with the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Atlanta Business Chronicle as well as a college dean and professor. Monty Ross, who cofounded 40 Acres and a Mule with Spike Lee and co-produced many of their most successful movies, is a current Filmmaker-in-Residence at the studios helping develop future stars in the film industry.

“We call these star athletes “ghosts” because their high school recordbreaking athletic, coaching and musical achievements and awards were ignored, buried, and in some cases, burned during the violent Jim Crow and segregated era in Georgia,” says Ron Bivins, CEO of Ours Studios LLC. Bivins is a graduate of one of the nearly 200 former Georgia Black high schools whose athletes, now in their 60s to 90s, were “ghosted” by the white society. Their accomplishments will finally be recognized and given their proper place in history thanks to the production. “We have to acknowledge that we were here,” he says. Ross signed on to complete the production of As If We Were Ghosts when his former classmate at Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) and COO of Ours Studios, Dr. Ann Wead Kimbrough, told him about the project. Both natives of Omaha, NE, they knew this was a story that the world needed to know about and one that was replicated in Black high schools across the country. Ross, along with former GPB producer, Nwandi Lawson, worked together reviewing hours of film footage, as well as conducted live interviews with former professional athletes who suffered through the ills of discrimination and into the Civil Rights Movement.
