N AT ION AL S E N AT E C O N F I R M S N E W P R E S I D E N T O F E X I M B A N K National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued a statement applauding the U.S. Senate's confirmation of Reta Jo Lewis as President of the Export–Import Bank of the United States (EXIM Bank). Ms. Lewis becomes the first person of color in U.S. history to serve as President of the EXIM Bank: "We are pleased that the Senate moved forward tonight to confirm Ms. Lewis with a bipartisan vote of 56-40. In recent weeks, the National Urban League encouraged Senators on both sides of the aisle to support her historic nomination, and last fall, we joined the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the U.S. Black Chambers, the Black Economic Alliance, and the Potomac Coalition in sending a letter to the Senate Banking Committee highlighting Ms. Lewis’ distinguished record of accomplishments and her impressive career in public

service as reasons for our endorsement. “The EXIM Bank facilitates and finances the export of U.S. goods and services, including products sold by American small businesses. Historically, minorityowned firms have faced barriers securing export opportunities through the agency. The National Urban League provides technical assistance to small business
owners of color throughout our nationwide affiliate network. We are hopeful that Ms. Lewis’ tenure as the EXIM President will usher in a new era where the bank is more inclusive of the many minority-owned firms that deserve representation at the EXIM Bank. "Ms. Lewis has the requisite experience, credentials, and judgment necessary to admirably
lead the U.S. EXIM Bank, having worked in international affairs and public policy for more than 25 years. She previously served as senior fellow and the Director of Congressional Affairs at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, a nonpartisan think tank focused on promoting cooperation between the U.S. and Europe. Prior to that, she served as the first-ever Special Representative for Global Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, where she was in charge of building and supporting strategic relationships between the nation’s state and local leaders and their foreign counterparts. Additionally, Ms. Lewis has held senior positions in the Clinton Administration, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and international law firms. "The National Urban League congratulates Ms. Lewis on her confirmation and looks forward to working with her in this new role.”
PROTEST AGAINST MINNEAPOLIS POLICE SHOOTING HELD National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and Urban League Twin Cities President and CEO Steven Belton issued the following joint statement regarding the fatal shooting of Amir Locke by Minneapolis Police Officer Mark Hanneman: “Amir’s death is not simply a tragic mistake; it is the direct result of policies, procedures, and attitudes that the Urban League and other advocates have fought for years to eliminate. The grief Amir’s family and community are experiencing is deepened by the sense of indifference on the part of police and city officials. “It’s hard to believe police are still engaging in this kind of conduct, nearly two years after police killed Breonna Taylor in the botched execution of a no-knock warrant, and the murder of George Floyd drew national attention to police mistreatment of citizens of color. “Mayor Frey’s imposition of a moratorium on no-knock 2 | NewYorkTrendnyc
warrants only serves to highlight the emptiness of the police department’s November 2020 announcement that the practice would be drastically restricted, and Mayor Frey’s own claims to have banned no-knock warrants in almost all cases. “Rather than immediately acknowledge the missteps that led to Amir’s tragic shooting, the
department set about demonizing an innocent man, falsely identifying him as a ‘suspect’ and claiming he pointed the gun at an officer, which the body cam video refutes. “The people of Minneapolis deserve better than lip service and empty promisaes. Such a flagrant disregard for proper procedure even as the

department is under a federal pattern and practice investigation is a serious red flag. We will closely monitor the investigation into this fatal shooting and insist on holding police and city officials responsible for their conduct. “Our deepest sympathy is with Amir’s family and we stand with those peacefully protesting for meaningful change.”

NEWS CONGRESS URGED National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial has issued the following statement after sending a letter to Congressional leadership urging inclusion of housing investments in the next Build Back Better budget reconciliation bill: “Access to safe, decent, and affordable housing is a key part of our nation’s infrastructure. Ignoring the dire housing infrastructure needs facing communities nationwide poses a serious long-term threat to the very progress we hope to make by improving our roads and bridges. Given this reality, significant investments in our nation’s housing infrastructure constitutes a down payment on American families, particularly low-income and communities of color for whom the lack of sustainable housing opportunities has constrained economic opportunities for far too long.

National Urban League Sends Letter to Congressional Leadership Urging Inclusion of Housing Investments in Build Back Better Budget Proposal “The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the existing disparities that impact communities of color, especially when it comes to housing. As housing costs continue to rise, it is incumbent upon Congress to provide the American people with access to opportunities for home ownership
and subsequent economic prosperity. This starts by passing the Build Back Better Act. “Inclusion of robust housing investments is vital to addressing significant deficits our nation currently faces. These investments should, at

the very least, include: Allotment of significant resources to assist with the building of new affordable homes; Rehabilitation of existing homes; Offering incentives to states to address local zoning and landuse barriers that inhibit the building of new affordable housing units; Creating initiatives to increase awareness of available and sustainable home-ownership opportunities through community-led organizations; and Down-payment assistance for the millions of mortgage-ready first generation, first-time home-buyers. “The National Urban League urges Congress to include these housing infrastructure investments in any final reconciliation package that may be considered this session and look forward to working with our Congressional leaders to ensure this gets done.”

COMMENTARY
COLLISION
OF
Defiant Political Oppressors is a timely analysis that is at once theologically and politically incisive. Trump—a modern-day Pharaoh—and his minions adamantly refuse to let the nation go free. What is on the horizon when Ol’ Pharaoh and his army just won’t quit? Dare to engage this important message—an in-depth perspective on the intervening fight to preserve the freedom, truth, and justice of American democracy. It speaks clearly to crucial issues and consequences when errant and oppressive political practices collide with theology. Even though more than a year has passed since the insurrection of January 6, 2021, there is yet little doubt that the political oppression of anti-democracy forces in the nation have not abated but have intensified. The spirit and strategies of Trumpism proponents continue to permeate the society, threatening our democratic governing values, traditions, and institutions. Ex-President Trump and his advocates of Trumpism told the “Big Lie” of a “rigged” election, incited the insurrection, and continue to foment the current crisis in American democracy. Adherents to Trumpism show an insatiable greed for political power and collectively evince implicit biases for white racial supremacy. They refuse to renounce the failed attempt to subvert the government. As political oppressors they further incriminate themselves by speaking against and refusing to fully cooperate with the January 6 Commission that is investigating the insurrection attack on the nation’s Capitol. Trumpism loyalists openly challenge the authority and hearings of this U.S. Select Committee, downplaying the arrest and prosecution of hundreds of the insurrectionists. Further, they do so despite the Commission’s early findings that have uncovered sufficient evidence to file the more serious charge of “seditious conspiracy” against eleven insurrectionists for their mobaction against the nation’s government. Fear grips elected officials within this sociopolitical stream—fears of threats and reprisals from Trump and his Trumpism enforcers. Their fears have debilitated these politicians from telling the truth and acting civilly as responsible citizens and honorable elected representatives. These defiant oppressors persistently spread the “Big Lie” and other falsehoods, despite the serious repercussions
THEOLOGY
AND
of a disinformation campaign whose effects are eroding the nation’s civil, political, multiracial, and multicultural integrity; their unrighteous practices are degenerating the moral ethos of the nation. Trumpism supporters have given a slap in the face to American citizens by stringently opposing and blocking voting rights—the pillar of democracy. Their partisan schemes to sabotage or subvert fair democratic processes—by electing state and local officials who can overturn voting results in targeted areas—is unsettling, and sickening. Obviously, Trumpism adherents
manifest themselves as defiant perpetrators of oppression. Politically and socially destabilizing effects of Trumpism raise crucial and disturbing questions: At what cost will Trumpism’s defiant oppressors continue to stoke political chaos, and violence? How close is the United States on the verge of experiencing civil disintegration and the implosion of American democracy? What dire consequences must the nation confront to preserve its freedom from the extreme ideology of Trumpism anti-democracy? What kind of mindset makes Trumpism operatives foolishly believe they can personally escape paying the mounting charges for their political malfeasance? How is it possible for
POLITICAL OPPRESSION
them to avoid reaping the painful cost of their destructive behaviors when the time to settle eventually comes due? Rev. Dr. McCray writes with the courage of the “Watchman” who answers the people’s perturbing question “What of the night?” (cf. Isaiah 21:11). He spiritually wrestles with the looming consequences of the nation’s pressing political crisis and offers a telling theological perspective on the oppressive political stratagem of anti-democracy. His perceptive warning rings true: a historicaltheological trajectory indicates that serious spiritual and social consequences await unrepentant oppressors. Those who engage in constant political and social oppression must answer to God and will find themselves paying the high price of severe suffering for their recalcitrance. Occasionally God averts or delays a judgment. Yet—for the sake of mercifully preserving America’s freedom, and in the course of time before eternity—the Divine as Sovereign may dispense an inevitable and remedial retribution upon the nation’s oppressors. In this context—especially given the tenuous current political-social milieu—a Divine intervention may prove to be the safest and most enduring option available for preserving the soul of the nation’s democracy—true, just, and free. Defiant Political Oppressors Invite a Divine Judgment is a pertinent critical analysis that: Provides an in-depth view of the implications of today’s complex crises— political, racial, COVID-19, and economic—as they impact and converged before, during, and with the aftermath of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Recounts consequences of the dragon-like rule of ex-President Trump along political, social, racial, and spiritual lines. Explores key white Evangelical theological dynamics that support Trumpism and fuel the crisis in the nation. Unmasks important socio-political layers that Trumpism allies have spearheaded in their efforts to exploit political divisiveness, attack democracy, and suppress voter empowerment. Speaks truth against the evil, extreme, and extended crisis of Trumpism that the exPresident precipitated and perpetuates. Narrates the historical-theological Red Sea event, highlighting Pharaoh’s self-destructive
army that defiantly pursued their former Hebrew captives (Deuteronomy 11). The High God miraculously intervened to bring a judgment upon the pursuing oppressors. At the same crossroad, He victoriously delivered the liberated nation from their adverse socialpolitical predicament. This biblical precedent of a Red Sea Divine intervention by the “Warrior-Deliverer” God offers prophetic hope to all people who suffer the effects of defiant political oppression. Asserts that believers should strongly embrace the theological idea of a Divine intervention to reverse the threatening political affairs of America. Activist believers should use every civil and righteous strategy to combat the nation’s toxic climate of political divisiveness and anti-democracy. It is paramount also that followers of Christ proactively use their essential spiritual recourse. They should earnestly petition the High God to intervene against the nation’s defiant political oppressors. All people of faith should seriously consider this urgent call to intercessory action. Challenges spiritual perspectives that deem it unpalatable to welcome—righteously and joyfully—a Divine retribution on defiant oppressors. Encourages believers to rethink how they apply to the subject relevant biblical truths such as genuine repentance, forgiveness, eternal destiny, and the interrelation of love, justice, and truth. The author urges readers to embrace a theology of justified rejoicing in Divine justice—if God so chooses to effect an imminent and remedial judgment upon the political oppressors whose practices threaten to subvert the nation. Scholarly and passionately provocative, this work is the latest message of Rev. Dr. Walter Arthur McCray, a “certified Black evangelical,” community activist, and notable author of 20+ publications. This Chicagobased Pastor is a Gospelizer, “a Good-News messenger of the resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ,” and the publisher of Black Light Fellowship. Media outlets have featured his insights, including Newsweek, WOOC-FM, and WVON-FM. Well-known author of the classic titles The Black Presence in the Bible (vol 1), and The Black Presence in the Bible and The Table of Nations: Genesis 10:1-32 (vol 2), Dr. McCray has been in Christian ministry for over 50 years and is president of the National Black Evangelical Association (Chicago).

According to Scientific American, “if only one kidney is present, that kidney can adjust to filter as much as two kidneys would normally . . . this happens with no adverse effects, even over years.” “The message is awareness, that’s the ultimate goal,” says Steve Wilson who will be climbing with Hulick. “More people would consider donating if they knew how easy the surgery is, it saves someone’s life and it doesn’t have to change yours at all.”
According to the National Kidney Donation Organization (NKDO), more than 100,000 people in the U.S. are on the waiting list for kidney transplants. Over 3,000 new patients are added to this list every month. With fewer donors than there are those in need, 13 people die every day waiting for a kidney.
And aside from the physical considerations, it’s the emotional benefit the donor athletes have experienced that motivates them on this quest. According to Wilson, recipients are grateful to the donors, but it works the other way around too. “I may never meet my recipient, but if I do, I will give her a tight, long hug and say thank you for giving me the opportunity to live past myself.”
The benefits of being a recipient of a living donor may be apparent, but what isn’t as obvious is the positive impact donation can have on the person donating. As in all major surgeries, there is an inherent risk, however, we’re born with two kidneys, but in most cases, we can not only survive but thrive with one.

All are members of an aptly named nonprofit, Kidney Donor Athletes (KDA), founded by ultra-athlete Tracey Hulick who donated her kidney in 2017. Hulick’s motivation for the climb? “I want people to be able to use this as an example to show you can be an endurance athlete and do well with one kidney.”
Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.
If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.
Early screening of what’s known as your cognitive health, allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. We offer people who are experiencing possible early cognitive decline, the opportunity to participate in ongoing research studies/clinical trials that are focused on the early stage of this disease. Our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease is one of 10 centers in New York State, funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

HEALTHY BENEFITS OF LEMON WATER
Do you keep lemons handy and in supply at home? They provide several benefits and can be used in several ways, including combined with water. There are at least 10 benefits of lemon water to consider for implementing in your routine.
Is lemon water good for you?
Because lemons are nutritious with vitamin C and antioxidants, using lemons in water helps your body in many ways. Examples of these benefits of using lemon water include improving your digestive system, boosting your immune system, and fighting infections.
What does lemon water do to your body?
With the minerals that are in lemons, consuming a cup of lemon water can provide several effects on your body, targeting several issues that you might need lemon water to assist you in improving.
Ten (10) benefits of drinking lemon water
Lemon water detox – Lemon water alone does not make a good detox but adding fiber to your lemon water can help serve as a detox that helps boost your energy, exercise performance, and mental health. Lemon water for weight loss – The taste can encourage people to drink more – over plain water – due to the citrus and tart flavor; consuming it curbs the appetite and helps with binging on
sweets. Lemon water for skin – Can hydrate, nourish, and revitalize the skin due to the nutrients and vitamin C in lemons. These improvements, along with flushing toxins, can reduce wrinkles and keep the skin healthy and supple. Lemon water for blood pressure – Can regulate and lower blood pressure and maintain heart health due to the potassium in lemons. Lemon water for bloating – Can stimulate healthy bowel function by reducing bloating and stimulating bowel movements. Lemon water for kidneys – The citric acid in lemons can help break down calcium crystals that can build up into a small, hard mass that must be removed from the body, also known as kidney stones. Lemon water for the liver – Can serve as a liver detox because lemons assist with removing toxins, which can cause many health issues over time if they accumulate in the blood. Too many toxins can contribute to aches, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, and memory loss. Lemon water for digestion – Can promote healthy digestion and ease constipation and gas if you drink a cup of it on an empty stomach. Lemon water for the immune system – Can boost your immune function and electrolytes because of the vitamin C in lemons. You can add lemon juice, ginger root, and honey to a hot cup of water for an enhanced immune drink.
Lemon water for fresh breath – Can alleviate bad breath caused by bacteria and lingering food particles in the mouth. The lemon water also stimulates the production of saliva to help flush the mouth and keep the mouth hydrated.
Disadvantages of drinking lemon water daily
Keep in mind that lemons contain acid, so excessive intake of lemon juice may cause tooth decay or enamel erosion. Other disadvantages include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and other gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. It is important to consume lemon water in moderation, so sticking to a rule of ½ a lemon per cup is advised (experts say that the juice of two lemons per day, maximum, is healthy).
How to make lemon water
To start consuming lemon water regularly, use fresh lemons and start by combining ½ a lemon into ½ a cup of cold water and ½ cup of hot water. Squeeze the lemon juice from the lemon into the water and stir.
Lime water versus lemon water
If you want to switch it up on occasion, lime water is just as tasty as lemon water. Lemon water may be considered more beneficial since lemons have slightly more health benefits, but both are packed with antioxidants and minerals. So, drink up!
NUTRITIONAL ADVICE TO AVOID GLAUCOMA Eat right to protect your sight. That’s the advice of the Glaucoma Research Foundation, which offers its recipe for healthier eyes. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive vision loss through damage to the optic nerve. It is the second-leading cause of blindness. It occurs five times more often in Blacks and about 10 years earlier in Blacks than other ethnic groups, according to the foundation. As with other health issues, good nutrition can make a difference for your eyes, the foundation notes. FRUITS AND VEGGIES Fruits and veggies are good sources of vitamins A and C, as well as the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. These can protect against oxidative stress associated with damage to the optic nerve and other tissues of the eye in glaucoma. A study that included 584 Black women found that those who consumed three or more fruit or juice servings daily were 79% less likely to have glaucoma than those who had less than one LEAFY GREENS Leafy greens are one of those veggies to focus on. Research has found a link between kale and spinach consumption and a reduced risk of glaucoma,

according to the foundation. Eating leafy greens is also linked to lower rates of inflammation, cancer, heart disease and even the eye disorder macular degeneration.
TEA And have a cuppa while you’re at it. A study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that people who drank at least one cup of hot tea daily

NUTS AND SEEDS Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E, which is important for keeping cells healthy and protecting them from the free radical damage that can break down protective retinal tissues, the foundation notes. FISH The foundation also suggests fish, particularly salmon, tuna, sardines and halibut have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to lower glaucoma-related eye pressure.
lowered their glaucoma risk by 74% compared to those who did not. The foundation also suggests adding chocolate, bananas, avocados, pumpkin seeds and black beans to your diet for their health benefits. WHICH FOODS SHOULD YOU AVOID? People who are already living with glaucoma should avoid foods that contribute to metabolic syndrome, obesity, blood pressure problems, and diabetes. A diet that helps maintain normal blood pressure and blood sugar helps reduce glaucoma risk, the

foundation says. Eating a healthy number of calories, and limiting carbohydrates may also have benefits for the eyes. HOW TO PROTECT YOUR EYES According to the CDC, you can take the following steps to help protect your eyes and lower your risk of vision loss from glaucoma: If you are in a high-risk group, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam to catch glaucoma early and start treatment. Prescription eye drops can stop glaucoma from progressing. Your eye care specialist will recommend how often to return for follow-up exams. Medicare covers a glaucoma test once a year for people in high-risk groups. Even if you are not in a high-risk group, getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam by the age of 40 can help catch glaucoma and other eye diseases early. Open-angle glaucoma does not have symptoms and is hereditary, so talk to your family members about their vision health to help protect your eyes—and theirs. Maintaining a healthy weight, controlling your blood pressure, being physically active, and avoiding smoking will help you avoid vision loss. These healthy behaviors will also help prevent type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions.

HE ALTH BENEFITS (BlackPRWire) If you are not familiar with probiotics, then you might want to keep reading…probiotics offer plenty of health benefits. Upon discovering that they are bacteria, you might think that probiotics sound bad instead of good, but do not fret. Probiotics are not harmful to the body as you might believe. They are actually quite beneficial for women and our health. What are probiotics? Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts – also known as microorganisms – often called “good” bacteria. Yes, they are good bacteria that help us in managing our health if consumed. When consumed regularly, probiotics are especially good for your digestive system and keeping your gut healthy. The probiotics help send food through your gut when affecting nerves that control gut movement. The many types of bacteria are classified as probiotics, and they provide various benefits. They are present in fermented foods and supplements. What do probiotics do for women? Probiotics should become a regular part of your diet, especially if you’re a woman. An area that is specific to women, fertility, can benefit greatly from probiotics. For women, having a good ratio of certain strains can improve the odds of conceiving. Of course, discuss with your OBGYN for suggestions on what probiotics are best. Fertility is not the only area of focus for

women that draws us to probiotics, but overall vaginal health is improved with implementing probiotics into our routines. Best probiotics for vaginal health: Another area that is specific to women is vaginal health and the treatment of vaginal infections. Probiotics can balance out the vaginal microbiome, which wards off bacterial vaginosis, urogenital infections,
are probiotics that help balance out the pH level of the vagina. Our bodies are made to naturally maintain a balance of acidity and alkalinity, so pH balance is important for how our bodies function. usage. In fighting obesity, studies show that probiotics may assist in the release of appetite-regulating hormones and increasing levels of fat-regulating proteins. Best probiotics for women’s overall health: We’ve gone over the women-specific health areas and how important probiotics are in maintaining health in those areas, but they are beneficial for the overall health of everyone. There are probiotics that help with maintaining overall health, including the health of your organs, immune system, and your skin. Saccharomyces boulardii, a yeast found in probiotics, for instance, helps fight digestion and diarrhea. Lactobacillus, the most common probiotic, is known to help with digestion, including helping those who may have difficulty digesting lactose – the sugar in milk. It can also help with diarrhea. Lactobacillus can be found in yogurt and other fermented foods, such as kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut. Bifidobacterium, found in some dairy products, can ease various conditions, including symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Besides fermented foods, probiotic supplements are an option, but there are so many strains that offer various benefits. If you are interested in probiotic supplements, visit your doctor to get suggestions on the best strains to meet your needs.
START YOUR NEW YEAR WEIGHT LOSS PLAN What most personal trainers will say is the key to working out is to start. You’ve got to begin to be great. But many of us don’t want to start exercising (or stop) because we don’t know what really works or how to begin in the first place. Beginning an exercise program can be very overwhelming– even painful if you aren’t careful. So we’ve created a few key areas (and even a sample workout) that will help ANYONE get a good workout in and lose your first 20 pounds. WA RM -UP Warming your body up prior to exercise is very important for your health (and safety) and will also help you enjoy your workouts more. Warming up for 5-10 minutes will raise your body temperature and prepare your cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems for the demands of exercise by slowly increasing the blood circulation to and from your heart and muscles. Warming up helps your connective tissues better handle the stress of exercise, decreasing your chance of injury. Connective tissue is similar to hard plastic; if you don’t warm-up plastic it won’t be flexible, and is much more likely to “break.” Proper warm-ups (and cool downs) also help reduce the severity of soreness in the next day or two following your workout. The increased blood flow helps deliver more oxygen to the muscles and gets rid of the waste products that contribute to soreness. Increased blood flow also helps bring more fuel to your body, resulting in better performance. Warm-up with a low-impact exercise at a slower, more comfortable pace than your actual workout. Warm-up exercises like biking, an elliptical machine, walking, or rowing allow your body to warm up with
10 | NewYorkTrendnyc
limited stress to your joints. PAC E YOU R SEL F Another reason for soreness is trying to do too much too soon. Don’t try to make up for lost time. Start out with a few exercises and slowly progress. Your body will gradually adapt to the increased stress. If you are starting resistance training for the first time, try picking 1-2 exercises for each area of the body – the upper body, lower body, and core. Also, take into consideration the anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts of the body. For example, if you pick two core exercises, you might try bicycle crunch for the abdominals (front of the body) and lumbar extension for the lower back (posterior part of the body). C H O O S I N G T H E R I GH T W EI GH T L OSS E X E RC I S E P ROGR AM If your form breaks down before the last 1020% of your repetitions then you are using too much weight and you still need to be fighting to keep that form solid for those last few movements as well. Here’s a SAMPLE WEIGHT LOSE EXERCISE PROGRAM (Alternate workouts each week, 3 times a week):
3 sets of 8-10 reps. 2 minutes rest between sets.
If you are a beginner to aerobic training, start out with something like walking that raises your heart rate a little bit, nothing that will get you too out of breath. Try doing this for 10 minutes the first few times you exercise, slowly progressing the duration of the workout. If you’ve increased the time to a point where you can handle 30 minutes at that pace, start building a little more intensity. For example, you could attempt 2 or 3 days of 30 minutes each at your initial pace, followed by a 10-minute day at an increased intensity. MON I T OR YOU R EN ERGY L EVEL Another area of frustration for the beginner is energy level. Most people expect to exercise the first few weeks and experience a shot of energy. In actuality, the opposite often occurs. Your body isn’t used to the added stress, which causes you to feel fatigued and even drained, especially if you overdo it. Don’t get discouraged; it’s
natural to feel this way until your body adapts. As your body acclimates itself, your cardiovascular system will become more conditioned, causing you to have more energy and focus throughout the day. Your efforts will pay off.
UNDERS TAND HOW T O DEAL WITH SORENESS
Overexertion will trigger stiffness and soreness, causing many people to give up on exercise completely. If you do overdo it, there are a few things you can do to feel better. Exercise actually breaks your muscles down – sleep, nutrition, and hydration play a vital role in their recovery. Proper rest, refueling your body with healthy food, and drinking plenty of water will help you recover much more quickly. In the days that follow, doing a low impact exercise at a low to moderate intensity and stretching will deliver more oxygen and blood to help clean out the waste and bring more nutrients to your muscles.
