Harris was acquitted of the top sexual assault charges in 2015 but the case continued through 2020 until the City of New York finally dismissed all charges. Through his work, nationally renowned

TENNESSEE STATE SENATOR SENTENCING DELAYED On February 24, 2022 Federal Judge Sheryl Lipman called a preliminary hearing in relation to Tennessee Senator Katrina Robinson’s sentencing hearing scheduled for March 3, 2022. In the hearing, prosecutors attempted to switch their theory and approach for the third time over the course of the trial. Judge Lipman commented that she was “uncomfortable with the direction” in which the prosecution is trying to steer this proceeding. This lead to a delay in the sentencing until March 18, 2022. In the meantime, County Commissioners will be taking a vote in an effort to fill the seat once left vacant by Senator Robinson. Senator Robinson stated: “Though this whole ordeal has caused me great loss, one of my chief concerns has always been my constituents. My fight against expulsion from the senate was

not about me but about the citizens of District 33 maintaining their voice in this legislative session. My legal team and I were asking for a delay in judgment for this very reason. This time period following the expulsion has been filled with grief for me, mainly because my heart is so centered in serving. However, a good leader puts themselves aside to make logical decisions and preparation to come through for those they serve. “Knowing that the partisan based expulsion was imminent and my party would have difficulty even getting bills out of a very critical committee in my absence, I knew a replacement would need to be seated both quickly and thoughtfully. I only had conversation with one potential replacement about my legislative agenda for this session and intricate inner workings on the senate side. That person was State

Representative Torrey Harris. Rep. Harris has thoroughly impressed me with his ability to jump right in as a freshman legislator with a fire to pass thoughtful legislation and a strong commitment to constituent advocacy. We have passed some very impactful legislation during our short time working together in the assembly. Even while working on our bills we shared, Torrey assisted with lobbying support in the Senate and building good relationships. As I was quickly transitioned out of office, we made arrangements for important legislation to stay alive in order to advance in my absence.” She added,”For the sake of continuity and a solid people-focused replacement, Rep. Harris just makes sense as the person to take the lead. I hope the county commission finds the same.”

Don’t let lawmakers leave New Yorkers out in the cold. The COVID-19 pandemic hit New York hard. Thousands lost jobs. Many of us fell behind on paying utility bills. And now a shutoff moratorium that prevented providers from turning off our heat and electricity has expired. Without action from lawmakers, shutoffs could begin any day, leaving more than a million homes without heat, hot water, or electricity.

‘CLASSICAL BAE’ LAUNCHES FOUNDATION IN HARLEM

Acclaimed violinist Ezinma, whose seamless fusion of hip-hop and classical music has made her a viral sensation, launched a new foundation in Harlem to introduce underserved children to classical music. Meredith Ezinma Ramsay — known affectionately as “Classical Bae” — has performed with headliners such as Beyoncé, Yo-Yo Ma, SZA, Kendrick Lamar and Joshua Bell. Now the acclaimed recording artist and educator’s new foundation, Strings By Heart, aims to bring more diversity, access and inclusion to the classical music world through music education. She will kick off the new mission with a tour of Harlem public schools. Ezinma, who has been covered by the New York Times, People, Essence, Elle, Strings Magazine and by BBC News, wrote the score for the 2018 documentary The Times of Bill Cunningham the beloved, late New York Times photographer and worked on the score for the blockbuster Black Panther. Yet her ascent to the heights of the classical music world was not an easy one. “I remember the isolation I felt as the only Black person in the orchestra, at times discouraged by my teachers from pursuing my dreams,” said the Lincoln, Nebraska, native, and NYC’s New School Mannes School of Music graduate. “Yet the statistics are clear that music education plays a vital role in helping children and young adults get on the path to achieve their goals, improve self-esteem and more. Children from every background and community deserve the chance to experience the joy of classical music and feel that they belong in that world.

And what better genre than hip-hop to segue young minds into classical music’s vast potential?” Black and Latino musicians are historically underrepresented in classical orchestras, making up less than 4 percent of orchestra members, according to Strad Magazine. Music education develops discipline, leadership, better focus and improved grades in addition to fostering a sense of community — skills that last a lifetime. To kick off the initiative, on Friday Ezinma toured three Harlem elementary and middle schools: P.S. 197 John B Russwurm, P.S. 133 Fred R Moore and Isaac Newton Middle School for Math and Science. There she performed interactive demonstrations to encourage students to apply for Strings By Heart’s music education program.

The organization will “equip,” “educate” and “empower” students by providing private and group lessons, access to instruments and premier cultural events and a communitydriven approach. During these sessions, students will be encouraged to try out instruments, engage in listening activities and get excited about learning something new and while developing a rapport with other students. SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS HELP OTHERS COMBAT LONELINESS

As recently seen on Yahoo! & FOX LA, Sparkze aims to help young people’s mental health and combat loneliness by helping guide people in showing their true selves through icebreakers and video features to build real genuine connections. With this immersive new experience, you can play games and talk to new people in your area who are all searching for something new. Sparkze uses a fun game show format, eases social interaction, produces authentic content at scale, and even gives people a shot at fame.

When developing the app, the team of influencers asked themselves, “why is society as connected as we are also the loneliest, and why are digital natives (adults 18-30) struggling more than any other generation?” They found that:  Over 70% of digital natives express feelings of loneliness  One in five GenZ is without a single friend  48% have tried dating apps, but only 8-10% are still using them Dating apps are local, but not social… and Social apps do social, but not local. So the team created Sparkze, where you can get to know the actual person before meeting them. The pandemic has changed how we will live and socialize. At the same time, according to studies, today’s youth are increasingly lonely. Now it’s time to leverage those interests with gameplay that helps people interact with and meet others. According to new research, millennials & Gen Z are the loneliest generations, so this influential team of social media movers & shakers created this groundbreaking relationship-making app where people meet virtually and get to know each other through games without the pressure of meeting IRL.

Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.

If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.

Early screening of what’s known as your cognitive health, allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE Research has shown that over 80% of children (aged 12-15) may have been subjected to harmful experiences online, which has led to heightened searches for “cyber safety” (20.5K) and “cyber security” (451.9K), according to Google trend data. Child game platforms such as Roblox have amassed over 47 million daily active users globally and are moving towards metaverse technology. With increasing concern over child safety in the metaverse and social media usage, experts at OnBuy Smart Watches spoke exclusively to cyber security expert James Bore, who has been in the industry for more than 10 years and has provided professional advice for keeping children safe online.

judged or worried about being told off for anything that happens. It is far too often that when people do prey on children online, they use the idea that adults in the child’s life will be angry at them, and that things are their fault. The difference it can make when they can have clear, honest communications with parents or guardians is huge, and is arguably the biggest step towards online safety.

2. Explanation of safety and censorship tools. Allowing your child (particularly older children) to understand why certain rules are in place and what they do. Children are inventive, and most parental control tools can be worked around by any child with a sense of curiosity and a desire to push boundaries.

Other key questions and conversations for parents to ask and discuss include:  What social media applications do they use, if any? Do they have any games with social media functions or chat?  Make sure they understand privacy settings, and go through them with them.  Make sure they understand that people lie, and they should not meet anyone they only know online.  Do they understand about online harassment and bullying, how to recognize if they’re targeting someone, or being targeted, and what to do about it?  Do they play any games which allow ingame purchases, and do you have control over their ability to spend  OnBuy Smart Watches scraped online parenting forums to reveal 5 key ways parents can protect their children online easily: 1. Explicit websites Search engines for kids and filtering programs can be effective in allowing parents to control what sites children can see. Netmums recommends Net Nanny – which monitors online content, limits screen time and filters sites to protect your children. OnBuy Smart Watches discovered that parents also recommended the following search engines for kids – Aj Kids and Kids Search, whilst users on Mumsnet suggest censoring thread titles on the forum (keep Mumsnet forum names PG) so that children

are not exposed to explicit words if they happen to look over at the computer screen. 2. Inappropriate instructional websites Netmums refers to ‘inappropriate instructional websites’ as sites that promote step-by-step instructions for inappropriate topics such as concealing anorexia or taking drugs. These can be accessed through other genuinely useful instructional sites, and so run the risk of being taken seriously by children. OnBuy Smart Watches found advice on all of the reviewed parenting forums pointing towards blocking inappropriate websites, or downloading software that prevents popups and inappropriate instructional sites from popping up. 3. Chat room safety Mumsnet users suggest bans on ‘Whatsapp’ and social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter are all rated 13+) for younger children. However, parents are aware that there may be other chat room apps so suggest daily monitoring of your child’s phone. Regular checks can ensure that your children are staying safe on chat rooms and that nothing goes unmissed. Other users on the forum also suggest locking or removing the device overnight, so that your child gets adequate sleep and isn’t exposed to unsolicited and unmonitored messages when unaccompanied. 4. Cyberbullying According to the Anti-Bullying Alliance – one in five schoolchildren in the UK has been a victim of some form of online abuse.

Inez Cooper, founder of William Russell, gave some tips on staying safe abroad: “When picking a new country to relocate or travel to there are many important factors to consider, an important one being safety. Always make sure to get a good understanding of your destination before you go including any risks or cultural sensitivities to watch out for.” He adds, “Keep your accommodation secure, make sure all windows and doors are locked while you are out and don’t keep all your money or valuables on your person as pickpocketing is unfortunately very common in tourist destinations. Having a safety net of international health insurance should anything go wrong will bring peace of mind, enabling you to access private treatment if you’re injured or become ill.”

Westbury Arts is celebrating Women’s History Month with an exhibition of work expressing the theme Timeless—Tiempo Eterno, exploring Issues women face in society today, in the United States and Latin American countries, and a poetry reading and workshop with artist and author Rosalba Henao. The exhibition will be up for viewing Fridays: March 11, 18 and 25 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays March 12, 19 and 26 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.

“Timeless—Tiempo Eterno” features work by women about women. Nancy Turetsky’s “The Distance She Traveled,” a painting incorporating family photographs, tells the story of her mother’s journey from her Orthodox Jewish home at age 18 to a secular life with her husband, Turetsky’s father. Writing about her painting “Cake,” artist Patty Eljaiek says, “The expectation of women to be subservient has not changed. Although these ideas seem quaint in 2022, we have not really come as far as we think we have.” Rosalba Henao’s “Original Power,” depicts in Eve in paradise and the serpent giving her power. Empowering pieces by several local and visiting artists will also be showcased. Henao, who is also a writer who migrated to the US from Colombia in 2010, will read

her poetry in English and Spanish at the opening on Friday, March 4 from 6:30 to 9 pm held at the Westbury Arts gallery. Her workshop “My body, my dress,” on March 19, combines art and conversation as the women who attend reflect on their views of body image based on their culture and the media as they paint and draw.

Henao holds a master’s degree in education for art and sociocultural animation. The women-only workshop will be bilingual, English/Spanish, and participants must be over 17 years of age.
