On Thursday, April 6, Tennessee State Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled from the Tennessee House of Representatives for their participation in a demonstration in support of gun reform. Following widespread public outcry calling for the reappointment of the two young Black politicians, Rep. Jones was temporarily reinstated to his position on April 10th and Rep. Pearson was temporarily reinstated on April 12th. NAACP President & CEO, Derrick Johnson released this statement in response:

DNC ANNOUNCE SITE OF CONVENTION

The Democratic National Committee recently announced Chicago will host the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center from August 19 to 22. The DNC is returning to the Midwest, a critical Democratic stronghold: Illinois along with Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota – part of the “blue wall” – were crucial to the 2020 victory of President Biden and Vice President Harris and to Democrats’ success in the 2022 midterm elections. FEARLESS f u n d & JPMORGAN CHASE SUPPORT BLACK WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Fearless Fund, the first venture capital fund built by women of color, for women of color, has announced a new industry-specific cohort of the Get Venture Ready (GVR) Program in partnership with JPMorgan Chase. The program is designed exclusively for Black women business owners in the Fintech or workforce development industries, with a portion being veteran or veteran spouses, providing them with the necessary training, mentorship, knowledge, and skills to gain access to capital.

Participants in the 12-week comprehensive program will

have the opportunity to pitch their business for one of three grants totaling $30,000 at the end of their cohort. The grants are part of Fearless Fund and JPMorgan Chase's commitment to empowering women-of-color entrepreneurs and supporting the growth of their businesses.

"Our goal with the GVR program is to create a pipeline of successful, high-growth businesses founded and led by Black women in the Fintech or workforce development industries, with a portion being veteran or veteran spouses," said Arian Simone, General Partner of Fearless Fund. "We are proud

BLACK MUSIC COALITION HOSTS PROGRAM FOR FUTURE LEADERS

The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM) announced the opening of applications for “OnRamp,” a partnership between the two organizations for a guaranteed income program for 20 young, Black members of the music community, including artists and industry professionals, in Nashville, Tennessee. The OnRamp program, focused on improving inclusivity and equity within Music City, aims to empower the next generation of leaders in the early stages of their careers by granting access to personal and professional development opportunities, community mentorship, industry exposure, access to exclusive Academy membership panels and tentpole live events, and visibility with Academy Board members and industry leaders. Additionally, through the program, each participant will receive a $1,000 monthly stipend for one year.

To qualify, applicants must identify as African-American, be a resident of the Greater Metro Nashville area (defined as the following counties: Davidson, Dickson, Maury, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson), and demonstrate financial need as determined by the Self Sufficiency Calculator. Applicants are asked to provide three to five professional and personal references (with at least one professional reference strongly encouraged), answer questions about their career goals in the music industry, share what they hope to gain from the program, and answer other programmatic questions. MUSIC MUSIC LEGEND FOCUS OF MAJOR EXHIBIT

Roots 101 African American Museum will open a long-awaited tribute to the late Stephen "Static Major" Garrett, the "King of Kentucky." The exhibit will take visitors through the legendary music career of the musical genius, who was born in Louisville on November 11, 1974, and died on February 23, 2008.

Static Major was a singer, songwriter, and record producer, who was a member of the R&B trio 'Playa' that went on to have hits like "Cheers 2 U" and "Don't Stop the Music." This year marks the 25th anniversary of the group's formation. Static Major was also a songwriter for some of the biggest artists in R&B and Hip-Hop, from Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and Nicole Wray to Pretty Ricky and Lil Wayne After his death in 2018, hip-hop superstar Drake featured Garrett in his hit song "After Dark." Then in 2020, Louisville native Jack Harlow released "Luv Is Dro," which was a reworked version of Garrett's song. Prior to the public exhibit opening, which will run from May 8th thru July 8th at Roots 101, there will be

a private event on Sunday, May 7th, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The Music Is Like Breathing Brunch will give family, friends, and special guests an opportunity to get the first look at the exhibit and share special stories of the talented Kentucky native who was ahead of his time.

HIGH SCHOOL ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAM OPENS REGISTRATION

Hitsville Next will house The Pop Shop, an Entrepreneur in Residence Program, providing high school students aged 13 to 18 with unique opportunities to experiment with business concepts; explore career paths adjacent and connected to the music industry; receive mentoring from accomplished executives, entrepreneurs, artists, and network with peers.

The Pop Shop will perpetuate the greatest entrepreneurship success story and business model of our lifetime – Motown Records. A process started by Berry Gordy’s parents to encourage entrepreneurship among their eight children; siblings would pair up, pitch a venture and the winning team would be given a six-month residency at the family businesses. This allowed all the Gordy children an opportunity to conceptualize, launch, and operate their own businesses. Portions of revenues earned from the companies were reinvested to start a family fund, Ber-Berry Co-operative. The

brainchild of the eldest sister and Museum founder Esther Gordy, Ber-Berry provided seed money to establish Tamla Records, Berry Gordy’s first record company. In its first year, the Pop Shop will bring together a cohort of four young entrepreneurs aged 13 to 18 for a five-month entrepreneurial incubator program. Through two months of in-person and virtual workshops, one-on-one mentoring and networking with entrepreneurial and social media experts, web-based and social media coaching, and two months of varied opportunities to test their ideas live on our campusentrepreneurs will be equipped with resources, mentorship, and peer support to establish a lifelong commitment to their entrepreneurial development.

TEXAS SOUTHERN U CHEER TEAM WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Texas Southern University Cheerleading Team made history as they won a national title at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College National Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida on Friday. Competing in the Cheer Spirit Rally Division I category, the Tigers were solid from start to finish as they opened the preliminary round with a 94.05 performance score, 94.3 raw score and a 23.5125 performance score. In the final round, TSU maintained its consistency and did even better with a 96.1 performance score, 96.1 raw score and a 95.5875 event score.

The national title marked the first time an HBCU has claimed a title at the championships.

"When I first came to TSU, I told the team we're going to Nationals," said head coach Shontrese Comeaux "When we earned our gold bid at NCA Camp, I told the team, 'it's time to go to work'. I knew this was the year and the team to get the job done. I'm so proud of them and where we're

going to take the cheer program next."

In the summer of 2022, the team set the foundation for its national title with a Gold bid at NCA camp, an All-American award by the mascot Tex the Tiger, second place in overall game day and overall most spirited.

"Words can't express how proud I am for our cheer team's national championship," said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. "They've worked very hard for this moment over the past several months. To see the long hours they've dedicated come to fruition in the form of a national championship is amazing as I want to commend the coaching staff and team members for their efforts. This team has made history at Texas Southern and everyone apart of TSU nation is proud of their accomplishments."

The team will receive national championships letterman jackets and rings for winning the title.

EDUCATION BOWIE STATE UNVEIlS Dionne Warwick Theater

Music icon Dionne Warwick graced a private function at Café Milano in Georgetown to benefit Bowie State University as a prelude to the unveiling of the newly named Dionne Warwick Theater in the Fine and Performing Arts Center at BSU.

Nuschese, owner of Café Milano and President of the Georgetown Entertainment Group LLC., and Donald Hoffman, President and CEO of EXCEL Services Corporation, allowed Ms. Warwick to introduce some of her friends to BSU and the efforts of our performing arts program to cultivate future artists.

Among the special guests were Doug E. Fresh and gospel singer BeBe Winans, along with CNN’s Abby Phillip, host of Inside Politics Sunday, as the program emcee. Ms. Warwick sang a few of her classic hits and BeBe Winans also performed. President Aminta Breaux and other key persons from BSU were also in attendance.

The fundraiser set the stage for the hundreds of Dionne Warwick fans and supporters who gathered at the Fine and Performing Arts Center the following day for the unveiling of the Dionne Warwick Theater. It is the only performing arts venue in the world that bears her name. The program featured BSU fine arts students honoring Ms. Warwick by performing several of her hit songs. BeBe Winans also sang Amazing Grace to mark the occasion. A host of other celebrities, which included Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen and Tom Selleck among others, also honored Warwick through video messages.

The connection between Warwick and Bowie State, the first HBCU in Maryland, has been cemented. The Dionne Warwick Theater is now poised to host concerts, plays and other performances with her name elevating the venue to another level.

EDUCATION APP NABS FIRST PLACE IN HACKATHON

A team of students from Alabama State University (ASU) took the top prize for their innovative credit education program to reach their peers in the first-ever #IYKYK Hackathon (If You Know, You Know), sponsored by Experian and HomeFree-USA Their winning concept was a gamified app that teaches credit education and fiscal responsibility.

“We talked about teaching people from ages 10 to 99. That’s how much of an impact credit has. Through our app, we hope to tell more people about credit,” said Mandelkosi Sibanda of Alabama State University

Nicknamed the “ASU Credit Stingers,” Sibanda and his teammates Thomas Mulaisho, Takudzwa Modza and Janai Thompson earned a $40,000 scholarship for their concept, “Credit Rush.” The awardwinning idea is a game where, in order to overcome obstacles, students watch a video or take a quiz about credit in order to advance to higher levels. Other features include the “Hive,” a library of credit education materials, chat, daily calendar functions and more.

The #IYKYK Hackathon challenged students to create a credit education program for their peers, including those who are not part of the credit ecosystem. The competition was the culmination of a six month program as part of the Center for Financial Advancement® (CFA) Credit Academy sponsored by Experian and HomeFreeUSA that brought together more than 250 students from 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in live sessions with Experian credit education experts and self-paced content. Finalists from ASU, Fisk University, Morgan State University and Shaw University represented six countries and eight different languages. The teams presented their ideas live at Experian’s North America headquarters.

“Every team exceeded our expectations. We’re inspired by these student leaders and their commitment to driving positive change in their communities. In sharing their personal stories and experiences, they’re helping us create solutions that are culturally and generationally relevant so we can meet them where they are in their financial and credit journeys,” said Raudy Perez, Experian North America’s senior director for diversity, equity and inclusion partnerships.

BOOKS RESEARCHER PENS COMPELLING BOOK FOR BLACK CONSUMERS

Reaching the Black consumer can be daunting if those trying to make a connection lack the depth, heft or the information-gathering skills required to capture their loyalty and coveted dollars. Those stymied about how to execute a campaign targeted to this valuable segment can now turn to a mustread book for perspectives, insights and proven-effective strategies. BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH WEEK #BMHW23

Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), held on April 11-27, is a week-long campaign led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, activism, and communitybuilding to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people.

This year’s theme, Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy, speaks to women’s strength, power, and resilience, and their unassailable right to live freely, safely, and joyfully.

According to the CDC, in 2020 the maternal mortality rate for Black women was 3 times higher than white women in the U.S. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as lower quality healthcare, structural racism, implicit bias from healthcare providers, and underlying chronic conditions.

Improving maternal health and reducing the disparities in maternal health outcomes is a top priority for the Biden-Harris Administration. In 2022, a dozen federal agencies mobilized to develop and release the White House Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis. This Blueprint outlines specific actions that the federal government is taking to improve maternal health across five priorities, ranging from increasing access to and coverage of high-quality maternal health services to expanding and diversifying the perinatal workforce.
