In October, 2023, NYU Africa House and its affiliated NYU Center for Technology and Economic Development (CTED) set in motion the cultural exchange, bringing together African American artists from Chester, PA, and artists in Kumawu, Ghana, to kindle a deep heritage connection and cultivate an art-based relationship. The purpose is to foster not only a heritage connection, but an art economy between these artists from Africa and

the Diaspora. The Chester artists were in-residence at CTED and the Tweneboa Kodua Senior High School (TKSHS), where they collaborated with educators and students, resulting in a rich tapestry of art that will be exhibited at various venues, including NYU CTED Art Gallery, Bodomase Palace Museum, Bodwease Palace Museum, Kumawu Palace Museum, and NYU Africa House in New York City.

NEWS L E A D I N G O R G A N I Z AT I O N S J O I N F O R C E S F O R B R E A S T C A N C E R A L L I A N C E TOUCH, The Black Breast Cancer Alliance (TOUCHBBCA) is teaming up with the Bexa Equity Alliance (BEA) in a strategic partnership to change the game on breast cancer early detection for young Black women. This news will launch at the 2023 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Alliance. “Equity in Action is our brand and our mission. This branded joint initiative will allow for both of our organizations to dramatically deepen and scale our impact, leveraging our aligned missions to create an evidence-based model for breast cancer prevention and detection.”

This first-of-its-kind joint initiative is capable of providing millions of Black women, even those high-risk but below traditional screening recommendations, in the United States with life-saving education and early detection opportunities. Together, TOUCHBBCA and the BEA will work with community organizations in major metro centers across the U.S. to significantly expand access to the Bexa Breast Exam targeting Black women. Unlike traditional breast exams, the Bexa Breast Exam is a quick, accurate, painless exam that does not involve radiation and provides women with immediate results.

This partnership is just the start of solving a crisis among Black women facing breast cancer. This collective effort harnesses the strengths of both organizations and rallies the support of the decision makers and communities as needed to leave no woman of color behind.

As partners, the organizations will bring Bexa’s innovative screening technology into TOUCHBBCA’s Black community via its For the Love of My Gurls campaign, which works with young Black women ages 18-35. The Love of My Gurls events will feature Bexa screening opportunities on the spot, thereby addressing the screening gap for young Black women. Currently, Black women aged 40-49 are 80% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women. Additionally, Black women under 35 get breast cancer at twice the rate of white women and die at 3 times the rate. Triplenegative breast cancer (TNBC), the most aggressive breast cancer sub-type, is more common in young women. Data shows those diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 40 are twice as likely to have TNBC than those between the ages of 50 and 64. It’s clear Black women need information about breast cancer much sooner and long before

The Smalls House is a National Historic Landmark in Beaufort recognized for its most well-known resident--the Civil War hero, South Carolina businessman, and politician Robert Smalls. The former owners - Billy Keyserling, former Mayor of Beaufort, and his brother Paul - purchased the home to create greater understanding and appreciation for Smalls’ exceptional story and have held the property for the last two years. “The National Trust thanks the Keyserlings for championing the life, story and legacy of Robert Smalls,” said Jay Clemens, Interim President and CEO, National Trust. As part of the purchase, the National Trust will work cooperatively with the Historic Beaufort Foundation to maintain the home’s architectural integrity, resolve issues related to making the property publicly accessible, and continue its use as a private residence. The Historic Beaufort Foundation and the Beaufort community recognized the historic and architectural significance of the Robert Smalls House

More than two decades ago, Historic Beaufort Foundation accepted a preservation and conservation easement further protecting the National Historic Landmark.

summer, Gov. Henry McMaster signed a bipartisan bill establishing the annual Robert Smalls Day. All 46 S.C. senators have proposed displaying Smalls’ portrait in the Senate chamber, and a House bill has been proposed to erect a statue of the great patriot on the Statehouse grounds.

To complete this purchase, the National Trust’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund received support from several donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals. The biennial event will be held at the Gaylord National Harbor Resort in Oxon Hill, Md. This event is the organization’s signature fundraising event, with proceeds raised being used to fund programs of critical concern known as “Four for the Future” – health, education, economics, and social justice. “The gala allows us to remember and celebrate the good work of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height over the years, while recognizing the good works of many today, especially our Crystal Stair Award recipient,” said Rev. STUDENTS NAMED UNIVERSITY INNOVATION FELLOWS The University Innovation Fellows program empowers students to become agents of change at their schools. Fellow’s work alongside a faculty or staff representative to ensure all students gain the attitudes, skills and knowledge required to navigate a complex world and build the future. “Higher education institutions around the world need student leaders to be involved in shaping the experience of teaching and learning,” said Humera Fasihuddin, Co-director of the program. “Students can provide an essential perspective on what learners need to succeed and thrive in the world today, and students can take the lead on making the necessary changes happen at their schools.” The fellows were nominated by faculty and administrators as individuals or teams of students and selected through an

application process each year. Following acceptance into the program, students participate in a six-week online training experience where they learn to analyze their campus ecosystems and identify opportunities for change. Glover, Petrus and Adonis have decided to focus on creating a more inclusive and cohesive community at JCSU in order to improve the emotional and social wellbeing of students. Some of the ideas they have discussed include implementing creating circular arrangements in classrooms and implementing an application called SoulfulHarbor. This app will act as a social network that will connect students with similar interests and act as a social calendar to encourage students to attend University events.

“We know that emotion and social well-being directly impact academic performance,” said Glover. “It’s important that we focus on these things so students can have the best experience here.” The project will be implemented via faculty training, curriculum revision (encouraging faculty to add more collaborative work experiences into their classes), a pilot phase and full implementation. Adonis, a Computer Engineering major, says he is excited to be a part of the program because it is fueled by students who are creating better experiences for their classmates. “I’m excited about enriching the social and emotional well-being of my fellow students as it cultivates an environment where every student’s excitement becomes the heartbeat of progress, bringing out the best

in everyone,” he said. The students will work alongside Dr. John Bannister, who serves as the “faculty champion” for the fellows. Bannister was named a candidate in the Stanford d.school’s faculty innovation fellows program in February. “As the Faculty Champion for our UIF fellows, my role is to both guide the fellows and help mitigate any challenges impeding their work,” he said. The changes must be related to innovation, entrepreneurship, design thinking and creativity. They work to understand the needs of both their peers and their faculty and administrators. They apply this new knowledge and perspective to design new educational opportunities for their peers. After training, fellows implement the projects they’ve crafted. They continue to serve as change agents and leaders at their universities and beyond. There are 68 higher education institutions from 15 countries that participate in the program. “The new Fellows are designing experiences that help all students learn skills and mindsets necessary to navigate these uncertain times and to shape the future they want to see,” said Leticia Britos Cavagnaro, Co-director of the program. “They are giving back to their school communities, and at the same time, they’re learning strategies around design, creativity and leadership that will help them in their careers.”

EDUCAT ION AFRICAN HUMANITIES INAUGURAL PROGRAM COMPLETED AMERICAN COUNCIL OF LEARNED SOCIETIES (ACLS) is pleased to announce the completion of its celebrated fellowship initiative, the African Humanities Program. ACLS will join past fellows and advisors of the program in celebrating the success of the program at the inaugural conference of the African Humanities Association on November 26-29, 2023, at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. The African Humanities Program (AHP) was created in 2008 with generous support from Carnegie Corporation of New York to fund early-career scholars working and living in Africa. The program awarded more than 500 dissertation and post-doctoral fellowships to scholars in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda, and created a vital network of more than 100 senior scholars at African universities who served as program advisers and peer reviewers. The program provided program fellows with opportunities for residencies at African centers for advanced study, manuscript development workshops, and professional development and mentoring. In addition, the program’s African Humanities Series has published 23 books by AHP fellows to date, circulating African humanities research to the international scholarly community. The momentum generated by the program now continues through the African Humanities Association (AHA). This new academic society, created and led by past fellows and advisors from AHP, has already won an independent research commission from the African Academy of

Juniors and seniors at Clark Atlanta University (CAU), Morehouse College, and Spelman College will be eligible to register for the courses. The curriculum will be derived from the successful

Media Sales Institute (MSI) curriculum, which prepares and pre-qualifies college graduates for careers in media sales, operations, and marketing departments. Founders of the MSI – the leading talent development program for diverse media sales professionals – unveiled plans for the new Media Sales curriculum on June 15, 2023, at the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB)/ MSI graduation at Morehouse College with its “inaugural” media partner, Gray Television and the CAU School of

Business and Division of Communications Arts within the School of Arts & Sciences. The leadership team from CAU, Gray Television, and the MSI Foundation principles met in late September to discuss the launch of the Media Sales Department (MSD) curriculum. The design, research, development, and accreditation of the curriculum are forecasted to take five years. Housed at CAU’s School of Business, the new curriculum will focus on radio, television, cable, print, digital, and interactive media sales to address the media industry’s challenge of ensuring a diverse workforce. It will be open to students in all majors at the AUC.
